Seahawks power rankings roundup following the 2023 NFL draft

Here is a review of where the Seahawks are being ranked around the web after the draft.

The Seattle Seahawks may not be ready to take on true Super Bowl contenders around the league just yet. However, things are looking far, far better than they were at this time last year. In the wake of the Russell Wilson trade, the vast majority of analysts (ourselves included) believed Seattle was in for a rough year. At one point in the offseason, some places even had the Seahawks ranked dead last in the NFL.

Fast forward 400 days and this team is getting a whole lot more respect than they were in the spring of 2022. Here’s a review of where the Seahawks are being ranked around the web after the draft.

The Seahawks are starting to make people notice.

The Seahawks are starting to make people notice. Their offense is humming along, their defense is improving and they’re in first place in the NFC West. In the latest weekly power rankings from NFL.com, Seattle rose five spots.

Seahawks circling the drain in 2022 preseason power rankings

While Russell Wilson’s Broncos are near the top, the Seahawks are appropriately circling the drain of Doug Farrar’s new preseason power rankings at Touchdown Wire.

The 2022 NFL preseason is about to begin. The Jaguars and Raiders played the Hall of Fame game already and this weekend the other 30 teams will get involved. The Seahawks are scheduled to get their first look at real competition on Saturday when they visit the Steelers. There are a lot of compelling reasons to watch, but fans should embrace realistic expectations.

All will be forgiven if they find their next franchise quarterback in the 2023 NFL draft. For now, this team is in transition – particularly at the game’s most important position – and that’s not an ideal place for any team. While Russell Wilson’s Broncos are near the top, the Seahawks are appropriately circling the drain of Doug Farrar’s new preseason power rankings at Touchdown Wire. He has them at No. 28 for obvious reasons.

“Trading Russell Wilson for a whole bunch of draft capital was a questionable move, especially considering how badly this team had drafted over the second half of the previous decade… Wilson covered up a host of offensive sins through his tenure in the Emerald City, and with Geno Smith and Drew Lock battling it out for the starting job, wethinks we’re about to find out just how much that was the case. The 2022 Seahawks are playing, to a large degree, for the 2023 draft.”

There’s always a chance these Seahawks can defy expectations and be a respectable – if not a dominant team.

If they get strong rookie seasons from Charles Cross, Abe Lucas, Coby Bryant and Tariq Woolen it would go a long way in that direction. However, their ceiling (and basement) will ultimately be determined by how Geno Smith and Drew Lock perform.

Pete Carroll tops internal power rankings for the Seahawks

Here are the five-most powerful individuals on the team right now.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll chose violence this month, going full Red Wedding on his roster with a pair of stunning and unexpected moves. First, the team agreed to a massive trade, sending franchise quarterback Russell Wilson to the Broncos. Then they also released middle linebacker Bobby Wagner after Carroll talked him up at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine.

These two events amount to an earth-shattering change for Seattle fans who had enjoyed tremendous success with Wilson and Wagner leading their team over the last decade. With two franchise cornerstones now gone, the internal dynamics within the organization have shifted.

Let’s take a look at where things stand in a post-Wilson and Wagner world. Here are the five most powerful individuals on the team right now as it relates to football.

Seahawks No. 25 in Touchdown Wire’s way-too-early 2022 power rankings

This offseason may prove to be a bonanza for Seahawks fans who like bulletin board material and believe their favorite team is underrated

This offseason may prove to be a bonanza for Seahawks fans who like bulletin board material and believe their favorite team is underrated. After finishing with a 7-10 record – their first losing season in a decade – Seattle is going to wind up on the lower half of most offseason power rankings lists whether we like it or not.

In a new batch of way-too-early power rankings from our friends at Touchdown Wire, the Seahawks came in at No. 25.

“Even if the Seahawks don’t trade quarterback Russell Wilson, they did not look very good in Seattle when he came back from injury last season. There are holes. Maybe the Seahawks will prove this placement wrong, but this team is certainly one of the hardest to read right now in the NFL.”

That they are. While we feel their 2021 record doesn’t reflect how competitive this team really is, there are legitimate concerns about this roster – namely on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Seattle finished near the bottom in most pressure metrics as well as pass protection stats. If both of those areas don’t dramatically improve in 2022 it’s hard to see this team climbing back into the playoff picture.

The good news is coach Pete Carroll recognizes where his team needs help most. Upgrading in the trenches is the best thing he and general manager John Schneider can do personnel-wise to turn this group around.

More importantly, a philosophical shift is needed from the coaching staff. They have at least half of that element under way. New defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt and associate head coach Sean Desai will be bringing a more aggressive, less zoney approach than we have ever seen during the Carroll era.

If the Seahawks can marry those changes to a more analytics-friendly offensive mindset – namely passing on first down, going for it on fourth down and trying more two-point conversions, then the sky’s the limit.

Week 8 NFL Power Rankings: Making sense of it all

Week 8 of the NFL season offered some surprises. How did that impact the Power Rankings?

Some weeks of an NFL season make more sense than others.

Week 8 of the 2020 NFL season did not make much sense.

Looking back at the Week 7 Touchdown Wire Power Rankings, we saw four teams in the top ten lose, including three in the top six. The Green Bay Packers (ranked third last week) the Tennessee Titans (ranked fifth) and the Baltimore Ravens (ranked sixth last week) all lost, as did the Los Angeles Rams, who were ninth last week. Sure, the Ravens lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, our top team heading into Week 8, but the Titans lost to the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Packers lost to the Minnesota Vikings, a team ranked near the bottom and an organization that seemed to be tanking prior to kickoff.

Strange indeed.

With that in mind, here’s how the Week 8 Touchdown Wire Power Rankings shake out.
