WATCH: Archie Griffin accepts invitation to ‘dot the I’

Pretty cool. #GoBucks

In case you missed the news last week, Ohio State all-time great running back, and two-time Heisman winner Archie Griffin will be “dotting the i” in Script Ohio this fall. It’ll happen at halftime of the Akron game and it’s really been a long time coming.

But if you haven’t seen it, the way that the news was broken to Griffin was pretty unique. In fact, it was the OSU marching band that officially extended the invite for the honor, and thanks to the Ohio State marching band YouTube channel we can all get a look at how the news came to Archie and how touched he was to humbly accept.

Take a look below and watch the short video that shows the emotion and reverence Griffin has for taking his place in “college football band history.”

Pretty cool stuff. There’s no other way about it.

Revered Ohio State tradition confirmed for College Football 25

Script Ohio confirmed for College Football 25 #GoBucks

Everyday we get closer and closer to the release of College Football 25, which is a return of our beloved EA Sports NCAA Football franchise. As a reminder, once again, this game is only being released on the newest generation of consoles. This is the most common question being asked and I want to reiterate that the game will only be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.

All week the official X account of the game is releasing tidbits of what to expect from the game and today we got a glimpse of  “Script Ohio” and even dotting the “i”. Most college football fans are aware of the greatness that is TBDBITL, but seeing this tradition get recognized brings a tear to my eye.

There are a ton of rumors surrounding the game and the traditions added, but numerous sources have detailed the school’s efforts to work with EA Sports to make the game as real as possible. We have confirmation that the “O-H-I-O” chant will be included and possibly a few other notable band songs.

USA TODAY names one Ohio State football tradition as one of the best in Big Ten

Do you agree? #GoBucks

What sets college football aside from the NFL is the pageantry and tradition. Marching bands, rabid fanbases, and of course, some time-honored moments that invoke chills and reverence. A program like Ohio State is front and center with some of college football’s best traditions, but it’s not alone.

USA TODAY’s Paul Myerberg set out to separate some of the traditions in the Big Ten by way of ranking them in tiers, and one Buckeye staple of game days made it into Tier 1.

According to Myerberg, the venerable “Script Ohio” is one of the best college football traditions in the Big Ten, and for good reason (duh).

“Dotting the ‘i’ ― Performed to the tune of Robert Planquette’s ‘Le Régiment de Sambre et Meuse,’ the school marching band’s iconic Script Ohio formation is capped with a senior sousaphone player strutting to the dot above the ‘i’ in ‘Ohio’ and taking a deep bow to both sides of the stadium.” writes Myerberg. “The honored assignment has only been granted to a handful of non-band members, including John Glenn, Jack Nicklaus, and Bob Hope.”

You’ll get no argument from us, and we’ll go a step further and say that it’s the best tradition in the Big Ten and arguably the best in the country. I’ve seen opposing fanbases make sure they were settled into their seats to see “Script Ohio” take place before the game — and to rave reviews.

Myerberg does think that “Script Ohio” has some competition in Tier 1. He includes the “Hawkeye Wave” to the children’s hospital overlooking Kinnick Stadium at Iowa, the “Go Blue” banner at Michigan, “Jump Around” at Wisconsin, Penn State’s “White Out,” and the “Sellout Streak” at Nebraska (currently at 389 games starting in 1962) as the other Big Ten traditions in Tier 1.

Head on over to the engaging piece on USA TODAY to see the other tiers and what traditions are included.

WATCH: Ohio State band performs Script Ohio on ice vs. Michigan

Script Ohio is even incomparable done on ice. #GoBucks

If you were like me, you were at least a little intrigued about the event that was the Ohio State-Michigan in men’s hockey game over the weekend. The two battled on ice outdoors at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland.

The Buckeyes came away with a very important 4-2 victory in the “Faceoff on the Lake” to slide into a tie for second place in the league with just one weekend to go.

The event offered a fantastic environment. The end zones were painted with Ohio State and Michigan colors. The Buckeyes came out in throw-back alternate football jerseys, and even the OSU marching band was on hand.

Perhaps the most famous thing TBDBITL is known for is Script Ohio, and if you missed it, all that were in attendance were treated to a version of the incomparable tradition on ice. Check out the video of the OSU marching band forming the familiar formation as Ohio State took care of business on the ice against its arch-rival.

I don’t know about you, but Script Ohio never gets old. Whether it’s performed on the gridiron, on the basketball court, on ice or on the moon, it gives me chills every time.

Ranking Big Ten football’s top ten traditions

We rank the ten best Big Ten football traditions. What’s your favorite? #B1G

One of the things that endure many to the sport of college football over other sports and even the NFL is the pageantry and traditions that have stood the test of time. There’s nothing like a fall Saturday with the band playing, the familiar colors, and all the traditions that make you feel like you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

But not all traditions are created equal. Some envoke goosebumps and chills because they are so special and have been around forever, some get the crowd whipped up in a frenzy, while some are newer and still finding their way into the collective psyche of the college football world.

Call us biased, but the Big Ten might have more storied traditions than any other conference, and if not, what you see on Saturdays in the fall is at least up there with other leagues. Some have found their way on lists of best traditions in all of college football.

We decided to get in the game and give it the ‘ole college try at ranking the ten best Big Ten football traditions. But before we do, remember that this is just an opinion piece and normally what we hear is that your school has the best tradition and is severely underrated, while an opposing school’s traditions are overrated. It’s the way of the world.

Undaunted though, here we go with our list of the ten best Big Ten football traditions as we count down from No. 10 to the best of the best. Take it to the bank.

WATCH: Ohio State marching band performs Script Ohio on ice

Have you ever seen Script Ohio performed on ice? Take a look! #GoBucks #TBDBITL

It’s one of the most revered traditions in all of college football — Script Ohio. I’ve you’ve ever been to an Ohio State football game, seeing the venerable tradition is chill-inducing. It’s not uncommon for fans of other teams to stand in silence and watch TBDBITL march to form the word Ohio.

But did you know that the marching band will on occasion do Script Ohio in other venues? In fact, every once in a while, the formation is completed at hockey games, on the ice no less. And that’s exactly what happened on Friday night in an OSU men’s hockey game between Ohio State and Wisconsin.

The official Twitter account of The Ohio State Marching Band shared video and audio of the special edition of Script Ohio from the contest last night and we’ve got it here for you to see. If you haven’t seen it before, it’s definitely worth a watch because it is done a little differently than what you are probably used to.

By the way, the band in the house must have provided a boost for the Buckeyes, because they beat Wisconsin 4-3 in overtime to send everyone home happy with “Le Regiment” in their heads.

WATCH: Ohio State marching band practices Script Ohio to prep for football season

Even outside of a competitive environment, without uniform, Script Ohio will give you chills.

It’s a time-honored tradition. Script Ohio. There are many — even outside the program — that believe it’s the best tradition in college football and it’s hard not to get chills watching it performed. Even ESPN listed it as the best tradition in the game, and that’s with an unbiased eye toward these sort of things (we think).

But TBDBITL, or the Ohio State marching band, doesn’t just roll out of bed with instruments in hand and perfect the marching of the word O-H-I-O across the field. Much like the football team, it takes practice, blood, sweat, and tears to get it right.

So, just like the football team is practicing to become the best that it can, so too is the marching band. It’s a pretty intense process. Watch below as the OSU marching band goes performs Script Ohio in one of its practices in preparation for doing it for the very first time this season, thanks to the official Twitter account of TBDBITL.

Even outside of uniform and on a field outside the venerable ‘Shoe, watching this play out is worth every second.

LOOK: ESPN names this Ohio State tradition the best in all of college football

ESPN named the top five traditions in college football, and guess which Ohio State favorite came out on top.

[mm-video type=video id=01fcvcng61nhjb86jpnk playlist_id=01eqbz0qtnjg5x7tc8 player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fcvcng61nhjb86jpnk/01fcvcng61nhjb86jpnk-28fc0e12f76d78e56ed7ac2b19f5af5e.jpg]

College football is full of timeless traditions across the landscape of the sport, and Ohio State has quite a few of them. From Buckeye Grove to the Skull Sessions, to Script Ohio, so many moments that give fans chills have been passed down.

Of course, these special traditions that define the game of college football don’t just happen on the banks of the Olentangy. And depending on what school you root for, there’s a good chance opinions vary greatly on which are the best.

However, according to one graphic from ESPN as an interested and unbiased observer, it has one Ohio State tradition as the best in all of the game, and you can probably guess which one it is. Yep, dotting the “i” in Script Ohio. Ohio State fans get a sense of pride watching the formation play out on game days, but you don’t have to be a fan of all things scarlet and gray to appreciate it. In fact, the worldwide leader in sports programming agrees, ranking it tops overall.

The tradition does have some pretty good company though. Coming in behind Script Ohio is Clemson’s Howard’s Rock at No. 2, followed by the cadet march of the Army/Navy game in third place, Ralphie’s Run at Colorado checking in at No. 4, and the Kinnick Wave at Iowa as the fifth-best tradition in college football.

We are, of course, biased on this one, but agree that Script Ohio stands alone when you measure up the best traditions in the sport we love on fall Saturdays. Good job on this one ESPN.

WATCH: BTN analysts pick best Big Ten tradition. Where is Script Ohio?

The BTN crew picked their favorite Big Ten traditions. Did Ohio State’s venerable and timeless Script Ohio make the cut?

The Big Ten is full of cool traditions. In fact, it’s hard to find a collection of college football fanbases, bands, and fans that have the traditions so tried and true to what is in the heartland.

Eat your heart out SEC.

But what traditions are the best of all? If you’re an Ohio State fan, it might be tough to even pick the best in Columbus. There’s the gold pants for beating Michigan, Buckeye Grove, the Skull Session, Hang On Sloopy, and of course, Script Ohio.

So what do the guys at BTN think? They agree, it’s hard to pick just one, but the trio of Dave Revsine, Mike Hall, and Rick Pizzo each gave their favorite tradition in the entire Big Ten Conference, and Script Ohio was picked by Hall.

Here’s what Hall says about the venerable and timeless tradition.

“When I think of what makes college sports special, it’s often rarely the actual sport itself,” said Hall. “It’s everything around it — the fans, the alums, the campus. In that regard, I’m going to take Ohio State’s band dotting the i. The band is such a huge part of the college sporting experience. Those folks are not just awesome at what they do, but they’re the ones providing the soundtrack that makes the college game feel different from the pro game. The fact that OSU has this tradition going all the way back to the 1930’s, the fact that it’s done in the script design — I mean we don’t even teach our kids cursive anymore in school, that’s how old school this is. It drips with unique, college history. I love it.”

So what did the other two guys go with? Dave Revsine agreed that he gets goosebumps whenever he sees Script Ohio, but picked Wisconsin’s “Jump Around.” Pizzo went sentimental with the new and very special Iowa “wave” to the Children’s hospital.

You can watch the full video debate here thanks to what was shared by BTN’s Twitter profile.

Those are all good choices, but we are indeed a little partial to Le Regiment being played as TBDBITL serenades the entire stadium with Script Ohio.
