Patriots make four late roster moves ahead of Bengals game

The Patriots made four late roster moves on Friday.

The New England Patriots were busy on the eve of their Week 16 showdown with the visiting Cincinnati Bengals.

After revealing long snapper Joe Cardona was done for the season with a torn tendon in his foot, the team officially placed the veteran specialist on injured reserve on Friday.

In a corresponding move, the Patriots announced the signing of backup long snapper Tucker Addington from the practice squad to the main roster to serve as Cardona’s replacement. Along with resetting the long snapper position, kicker Tristan Vizcaino and tight end Scotty Washington were both elevated to the active roster.

Washington could be an interesting fit offensively with the team already playing without receiver DeVante Parker. Jakobi Meyers and rookie Tyquan Thornton are also questionable for the game.

So Washington gives quarterback Mac Jones another possible receiving target if the Patriots are shorthanded in this matchup. Meanwhile, Vizcaino will likely assume kick-off duties for the team.

There could be plenty more shuffling for the Patriots when the final injury report comes out before game time.

Patriots signing TE Scotty Washington to practice squad

The Patriots are adding another offensive player to the practice squad

The New England Patriots are adding another offensive weapon to the practice squad with the team making a move to sign former Cincinnati Bengals tight end Scotty Washington.

Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson reported the move on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the Patriots cut tight end Jalen Wydermyer.

Washington has converted to wide receiver in an effort to find an opportunity beyond the practice field. The Patriots obviously have a deep love for versatile players with the ability to line up at multiple positions.

So while Washington has moved to receiver, he still has the size and skill set to play at tight end as well. The same holds true for Patriots receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey, who has actually worked his way up to getting in-game snaps.

Washington could serve as a nice project player and a legitimate reserve piece if the team falls victim to the injury bug. In his last year at Wake Forest, he hauled in 35 receptions for 607 yards and seven touchdowns.

We’ll see if a new setting in New England brings new opportunities for Washington.

Did Bengals find the next Auden Tate with UDFA Scotty Washington?

Do the Cincinnati Bengals have something special on their hands with UDFA Scotty Washington?

The Cincinnati Bengals found something special in the seventh round of the 2018 draft with Auden Tate.

There’s an outside chance the Bengals did it again this offseason with undrafted free agent Scotty Washington out of Wake Forest.

Washington wasn’t the biggest name in Cincinnati’s undrafted class. But he sure sounds familiar — he’s a big 6’5″ target who fell far down the draft board and happens to have a massive catch radius.

Tate entered the draft at 6’5″ and 228 pounds. Washington entered at 6’5″ and 225 pounds. Tate had 65 catches for 957 yards and 16 scores on a per-catch average of 14.7 over the course of his college career. Washington had 110 for 1,676 yards and 13 scores on a 15.2 average.

There are bigger nuances to their games of course. But both are fun mismatch creators, especially on short fields. Both entered the league with concerns about how they’d ever create separation — but zero questions at all about how they’d perform on jump balls and other contested catches.

Tate was a fun breakout last year with A.J. Green sidelined, inhaling 40 catches for 575 yards and a score on a 14.4 average. One could argue he’s got the roster niche on lockdown.

But Washington’s resume and highlight reel make for a powerful brew. If nothing else, the Bengals sure won’t hurt for roster depth and practice squad candidates as Washington enters the fray this summer.
