Ravens roster cuts: Tracking the path to 53 players

With Tuesday’s deadline fast approaching, we’re tracking the roster cuts one player at a time.

The Ravens and 31 other teams have begun the painstaking process of trimming their training camp rosters from 90 players to the NFL’s required 53 ahead of Week 1.

Baltimore is a loaded team with Super Bowl aspirations, meaning there aren’t many available roster spots, and few of the players on the bubble will make the cut. The Ravens have decisions to make at the reserve running back and backup offensive line positions, among others.

With Tuesday’s deadline fast approaching, we’re tracking the roster cuts one player at a time.

Ravens waive injured tight end Scotty Washington

Baltimore Ravens waive injured tight end Scotty Washington

The Baltimore Ravens waived Scott Washington with an injury settlement after the tight end suffered a broken hand during the 13-12 preseason win over the Falcons.

Washington was fighting for a spot on the Ravens’ 53-man roster, but he had an uphill battle behind Mark Andrews, Isaiah Likely, and Charlie Kolar.

Washington’s injury could provide one final opportunity for rookies Mike Rigerman and Riley Sharp ahead of the preseason finale.

Washington signed with the Bengals practice squad after going undrafted out of Wake Forest in 2020. After spending the first two seasons of his NFL career on Cincinnati’s practice squad, Washington was signed to the New England Patriots practice squad in 2022. His most recent stint was on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad during the 2023 season before signing with the Ravens before starting the playoffs.

Ravens sign 9 players to Reserve/Futures deals

The Baltimore Ravens signed nine players to Reserve/Futures deals following the 17-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game

The Baltimore Ravens are set for an uncertain offseason at key positions following a 17-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC title game.

The Ravens will now work to re-sign defensive tackle Justin Madubuike while understanding that they may lose linebacker Patrick Queen to unrestricted free agency.

According to Over The Cap, Baltimore has 29 players set to test free agency and a little over $13,658,828,

With the locker room cleaned out and the offseason set to begin, the Ravens signed nine players to reserve/futures deals via NFL Communications.

Ravens sign tight end Scotty Washington to practice squad

The Baltimore Ravens announced on Tuesday that they have signed tight end Scotty Washington to the practice squad following a workout with the team.

The Baltimore Ravens announced on Tuesday that they have signed tight end Scotty Washington to the practice squad following a workout with the team.

Unsurprisingly, the Ravens wanted to add another tight end to the mix after Mark Andrews suffered a potentially season-ending ankle injury in the win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 11.

While there is an “outside chance” for Andrews to return at some point this season, according to Head Coach John Harbaugh, Baltimore will have to forge ahead without the Pro Bowl playmaker for the time being.

After spending the first two seasons of his NFL career on Cincinnati’s practice squad, Washington was signed to the New England Patriots practice squad in 2022. His most recent stint was on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad during the 2023 season.

The Ravens will primarily rely on second-year tight ends Isaiah Likely and Charlie Kolar alongside fullback Patrick Ricard to fill the substantial void left by Andrews. Baltimore also has undrafted tight end Travis Vokolek on the practice squad. Vokolek had an impressive training camp and preseason with the team.

Another option for the Ravens’ offense is to lean more into their wide receivers, which offensive coordinator Todd Monken has already done more of in his first season with the team compared to previous offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Ravens to work out TE Scotty Washington ahead of Week 12 matchup vs. Chargers

Baltiomore Ravens to work out Scotty Washington ahead of Week 12

The Ravens are down a tight end after Mark Andrews suffered a season-ending cracked fibula in the 38-20 win over the Bengals last Thursday night.

With only Isaiah Likely and Charlie Kolar on the roster at the position, Aaron Wilson reports that big, physical tight end Scotty Washington is at the facility for a tryout.

Washington signed with Cincinnati in 2020 as an undrafted free agent and has spent most of his career on the practice squads of the Bengals and Patriots.

This past summer, he was released by New England on Aug. 27 ahead of the 53-man roster deadline and eventually signed with Pittsburgh.

Did multiple practice absences reveal Patriots’ next round of cuts?

Patriots might have indirectly revealed recent round of roster cuts.

The New England Patriots returned to the practice field on Sunday with several notable absences.

With the 53-man deadline slated for Tuesday, the team has been hard at work whittling down their roster. Cornerback Quandre Mosely, defensive lineman Carl Davis and linebacker Carson Wells have all reportedly been cut by the team.

Here’s the full list of players that were missing at practice, per NESN’s Zack Cox:

TE Johnny Lumpkin

S Brad Hawkins

TE Scotty Washington

OL Micah Vanterpool

CB Rodney Randle

DL Justus Tavai

RB C.J. Marable

LB Diego Fagot

All of the above players were considered potential roster cuts in training camp. So none of the names on this list would come as any surprise if they don’t make the team.

The Patriots have until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday to get their roster down to 53 players. That means coach Bill Belichick still has more work to do before turning the page to the regular season.

Patriots slammed with injuries in first training camp practice in pads

It was a rough day with injuries for the Patriots in their first padded practice on Monday.

The New England Patriots got a taste of real football with their first training camp practice in pads on Monday.

And it wasn’t pretty.

Multiple players suffered injuries during the practice, including Cole Strange, Bill Murray, Jalen Hurd, Scotty Washington, Chasen Hines and Brad Hawkins.

Strange’s injury is especially concerning considering he’s a starter in an offensive line group that’s already banged up. His absence meant the Patriots practiced with both starting guards, including Michael Onwenu, out of the lineup.

The cracks are showing in competitive drills with quarterback Mac Jones constantly being under pressure. It has been even more evident when the field shrinks and the offense is working in the red zone.

Real football means more chances for injuries for a Patriots team that needs to stay healthy just to have a fighting chance in the AFC East division.

Some of the injuries mentioned above might have simply been the result of players being shaken up, but NESN’s Zack Cox also noted Strange was grabbing at his knee in discomfort before being taken to the athletic training shed.

Stay tuned to Patriots Wire as injury updates continue to come in.

Reading the room: Evaluating tight ends on Patriots’ roster

It’ll be the Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki Show at tight end, but others could contribute at the position for the Patriots.

The New England Patriots have always loved their tight ends, and they doubled down at the position in 2021 by signing Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith at the same time.

Fast forward to 2023, and Smith is in Atlanta, while the Patriots brought in Mike Gesicki as a replacement.

Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien pioneered 12 personnel for the Patriots in his first stint with the team. He brought in Will Lawing, who has followed him in his previous stints, to coach the tight end position. There’s hope the two can work together to create a new gold standard at the position.

For now, here’s what things look like for the Patriots’ 2023 tight end group:

This Mac Jones throw landed in NFL’s top-10 plays in 2022

This was easily one of the best plays of the 2022 season.

It wasn’t the best of seasons offensively for the New England Patriots in 2022, but there were the occasional flashes of greatness that left fans hoping for a brighter future.

One of those plays ended up making the NFL’s top-10 plays of the season.

It came in the fourth quarter of the Patriots’ Week 16 meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals. The team was on the verge of overcoming a 22-0 halftime deficit. It was 3rd-and-29 with hardly a prayer of hope left at Gillette Stadium.

Quarterback Mac Jones, who was scrambling for his life in the pocket, somehow managed to evade enough defenders to launch a deep prayer of a pass to wideout Scotty Washington, who was covered by two defenders.

However, instead of trying to make a play with multiple defenders draped all over him, Washington made the genius decision of tipping the pass into the awaiting arms of Jakobi Meyers, who waltzed right in for an easy touchdown.

The play came in at No. 8 on the NFL’s top-10 list.

The Patriots were on the verge of pulling off one of the most dramatic comebacks in franchise history against a Bengals team that nearly toppled the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship.

Sadly, Rhamondre Stevenson fumbled in the red zone with a chance to win the game at home. It was a tough way to lose for a Patriots team that seemed to beat itself more often than not.

Patriots down to one healthy TE with Scotty Washington going on IR

The Patriots will be down another tight end.

The New England Patriots announced they placed tight end Scotty Washington on injured reserve Tuesday, ahead of their contest with the Miami Dolphins. This leaves them with only one healthy tight end at the position.

Washington made his season debut during Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. It was also his NFL debut, as he entered the game following injuries to Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith. Henry left with a knee injury, while Smith left with a head injury.

Washington played 48 snaps in the game. Perhaps his biggest contribution was his tipped touchdown pass to wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.

Matt Sokol is the only other available tight end on the roster, as the Patriots enter Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins banged up at the position.

It’s been a difficult season for the Patriots with injuries and on-field play. However, they can salvage their season by knocking off the visiting Dolphins and staying in the playoff hunt.
