Former Celtics assistant coach Scott Morrison reportedly to coach Salt Lake City Stars G League team

The Celtics alum will join a Jazz organization increasingly looking like Celtics West.

The Utah Jazz are increasingly looking like the Boston Celtics West with word that another Celtics alumnus will be joining the staff of new Jazz head coach Will Hardy (himself a Boston alumnus) under the regime of former Celtics President of Basketball Operations and current Utah CEO of Basketball Ops Danny Ainge.

That would be former Celtics assistant and current Perth Wildcats (of Australia’s NBL) head coach Scott Morrison, who Sportando’s Emilio Carchia reports will join the Jazz organization as the Salt Lake City Stars head coach. The G League affiliate of the Jazz, Morrison will take up a familiar role, having previously served as head coach of the Maine Red Claws (now, Celtics) before joining the parent club in Boston as an assistant.

Morrison will join Hardy, Ainge, Jason Terry, and Evan Bradds as Celtics alumni now working for Utah.

Former Celtics assistant Scott Morrison to be next head coach of NBL’s Perth Wildcats

The former Boston assistant is taking over the helm of the NBL’s winningest franchise.

Former Boston Celtics assistant coach Scott Morrison has been hired to be the new head coach of the Perth (Australia) Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL) of Australia and New Zealand (not to be confused with the defunct US league of the same name that merged with the Basketball Association of America to become the NBA), per MassLive’s Brian Robb.

Morrison left the Celtics after a four-year stint with the Celtics as an assistant, having joined Boston in 2017 after serving as head coach of their developmental affiliate in the NBA’s G League (the Maine Red Claws — now known as the Maine Celtics) for three seasons.

Morrison takes over something of the NBL’s version of the Celtics, with the Perth Wildcats the league’s winningest franchise with 10 titles to their name, and 37 consecutive postseason appearances, an unmatched feat in Australian sports.

Morrison just so happens to share his name with the top politician in Australia, Prime Minister Scott Morrison, which the former Celtics assistant finds humorous.

“If the shoe was on the other foot and my favourite Canadian team hired Justin Trudeau to coach the team I think I’d get a great kick out of that, so I don’t blame anybody for laughing,” he joked via ABC Australia’s Blake Kagi.

Celtics assistant coach Scott Morrison reportedly interviewing for Wizards’ head coaching gig

The Celtics assistant is in the running for the Wizards’ top coaching gig.

Boston Celtics assistant coach Scott Morrison has interviewed for the vacant head coaching position with the Washington Wizards according to SB Nations’s Peter Yannopoulos.

Morrison, who came to the Celtics from the G League ranks as head coach of the Maine Red Claws (now, Maine Celtics), also interviewed for the head coaching position with the Celtics while it was vacant, but is likely looking to move on with the expectation that new Celtics head coach Ime Udoka will be bringing in at least some of his own staff. The Canadian assistant spent four years with the Celtics in that role under then-head coach Brad Stevens, who has since moved on to become the team’s President of Basketball Operations.

Also an assistant coach of the Canadian National Under-19 Men’s Basketball program, Morrison has a long and varied history coaching the sport at multiple levels and should be a competitive prospect for the Wizard’s top job.

WATCH: Celtics Assistant Coach Scott Morrison on Wanamaker’s Play

Boston Celtics assistant coach Scott Morrison talks with team reporter Marc D’Amico on what reserve guard Brad Wanamaker has brought ot the Celtics this season.

While he might not get a lot of attention, reserve guard Brad Wanamaker has been a steady force for the Boston Celtics over the 2019-20 NBA season.

Consistently playing within his role as a steadying presence, a lot of Wanamaker’s value comes from what he doesn’t do — namely, make the many small mistakes non-star players often commit.

Whether leading the second unit or playing with the starters, the Pitt product has done exactly what has been asked of him without trying to pad his stat line at the expense of the game plan.

One of the best catch-and-shoot 3-point marksmen in the NBA this season, the Philly native can also get to the rack.

Celtics team reporter Marc D’Amico sat down with Boston assistant coach Scott Morrison to talk what Wanamaker has brought to Boston in his second season with the team, and why he’s so valuable to the Celtics despite his low-profile play.

Watch the video above to get Morrison’s take on these and other aspects of Wanamaker’s game, and how it’s helped Boston’s success this season.
