Not many people picked the New Orleans Saints to beat the New England Patriots this week. Not NFL experts (two-thirds of whom predicted a Patriots win at home), not sports bettors (most of whom sided with New England), and not even me, having learned my lesson after calling for a Saints win last week (they lost) and a loss the week before (which they won, of course).

But the range of reactions was wide on Twitter. Here are what fans, analysts, and media outlets across the NFL landscape had to say about the Saints’ big 28-14 win:

The New Orleans Saints improved to 2-1 by defeating the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, which surprised a fair share of analysts and fans around the NFL. That just goes to speak to how much of a roller coaster the Saints’ 2021 season has been so far following their upset loss in Week 2 and statement win in Week 1. Here’s everything we know:

It’s taken some time for the Marquez Callaway hype train to rebuild its momentum, but scoring his first touchdown in the NFL should do a lot to help his confidence. The second-year New Orleans Saints wide receiver was the beneficiary of one of the wilder red-zone pass attempts you’ll see.

Jameis Winston flung the ball into the air with a New England Patriots defender wrapped around his legs, putting enough air under it to send every Saints fan watching to their feet in concern. But he may have seen the New England holding foul across the field and knew it was a free play, which helps lessen the risk, though it’s still the kind of throw he’s been working to avoid.

Callaway went into halftime with 3 receptions for 31 receiving yards, beating the numbers he posted through the season’s first two games (3 catches for 22 yards). Let’s hope this is the spark he needed to regain his preseason form.

Bang: Alvin Kamara asserted himself early on against the New England Patriots by linking up with Jameis Winston for an 11-yard touchdown grab. It’s the 61st touchdown of Kamara’s career, spanning 63 regular season games. That helps close the gap between him and Marques Colston for the New Orleans Saints career scoring record (72 touchdowns in 146 games).

Funnily enough, the play looked like one the Saints were burnt on a week ago. Saints film analyst Deuce Windham identified it as a Texas concept — the same design the Carolina Panthers used to pick up 30 yards on a Christian McCaffrey grab-and-go in Week 2. Sean Payton has always taken time to look at what’s working around the league, but this note-cribbing feels a little more personal.

One of the benefits of Drew Brees joining NBC Sports as a broadcaster in retirement is his quick reaction to New Orleans Saints games each week — there isn’t anyone better informed about the team than him across the NFL media landscape. He even got a look at their Week 1 game plan for the Green Bay Packers.

But he didn’t mince words when reviewing his old team’s stunning loss to the Carolina Panthers on NBC’s “Football Night in America” panel.

“The Carolina defense completely shut them down today. There was no run game, they got after Jameis Winston,” Brees said tightly, adding: “These Carolina Panthers came ready to play.” And then he quickly transitioned to recap the next game’s results.

It was a brief moment, but it sure felt like a quiet scolding. It’s a safe bet that he reserved more specific criticism for private conversations, which is probably the right move. Raising three rowdy boys prone to wrasslin’ on the sideline at the Pro Bowl is good practice. Entertaining as it may be, dissecting the Saints’ flaws on national television might not be in his or the team’s best interests. Let’s hope they make him proud next week.

The New Orleans Saints are a fun team to follow. They’re normally high-energy, competitive, and full of personality — pettiness from players, arrogance from head coach Sean Payton. It makes it easy to create enemies. So naturally the vultures are quick to circle whenever they struggle. Fans and analysts on Twitter kept a close eye on the Saints during their 26-7 loss to the Carolina Panthers, and the reactions, well, speak for themselves.

Unprepared, unserious Saints surprised by Panthers: Everything we know

Yikes. A week after beating the Green Bay Packers in every phase, the New Orleans Saints got a taste of their own medicine against the Carolina Panthers. With the exception of their special teams execution, the Saints were outplayed on offense and defense by Carolina. We got the full Jameis Winston experience today.

It was the worst-coached game of Sean Payton’s career. It’s not like there was a Hall of Fame defender creating havoc and spiking his game plan, like J.J. Watt did in 2015’s 24-6 loss to the Texans. There wasn’t a specific mismatch like Robert Quinn against Charles Brown as in 2013’s 27-16 loss to the Rams. And they didn’t overlook their opponent as they did in 2019 coming out of their bye week, as the Atlanta Falcons got away with in 2019’s devastating 26-9 upset.

The Saints didn’t have a good plan to start with, and they compounded it with too many mistakes and too little ambition to correct them. Here’s everything we know:

Whew, buddy. The New Orleans Saints outplayed everyone’s expectations to dominate the Green Bay Packers in Week 1, ringing in the new season with their most satisfying win in years. Get caught up on how they won 38-3:

Whew. It took the New Orleans Saints about an hour of real time to burn through two quarters against the Green Bay Packers, reaching the halftime break up with a commanding 17-3 lead.

Jameis Winston led the offense into over 200 yards of offense and nearly 22 minutes of possession, going 3-of-6 on third downs and converting both of their fourth-down attempts (chipping in an Aldrick Rosas field goal from 44 yards out). A healthy dose of Alvin Kamara, smart decision-making by Winston, several huge plays by Marcus Davenport, and a stifling New Orleans defense has gotten them this far. Let’s see if they can seal the deal.

Of course it’s far from over. Aaron Rodgers is fuming on the opposing sideline and the Packers elected to receive the kickoff to start the second half. But Green Bay needs to get going in a hurry to cut into that deficit.
