She’s baaa-aack! Fayetteville native, Arkansas guard Sasha Goforth unretires

Fayetteville’s own Sasha Goforth is back for Arkansas after getting medical treatment. She was a McDonald’s All-American.

Just over a year ago, Fayetteville High grad and Arkansas women’s basketball player Sasha Goforth was forced to retire from the game. Her health problems were too much.

Almost exactly 12 months later, with treatment helping, Goforth is making her return to the court.

Goforth, a 6-foot-1 guard, will play as a junior next season. She averaged more than 10 points a game during her first year at Arkansas in 2021-22 after she transferred back to her hometown from Oregon State.

Her return provides coach Mike Neighbors with four McDonald’s All-Americans on the roster. Goforth joins forward Jersey Wolfenbarger, center Maryam Dauda, rising guard Taliah Scott. Also returning for ARkansas is All-SEC Samara Spencer, who set school records for games and minutes last year.

In addition to her 11.5 points per game two years ago, Goforth also averaged 4.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in starting every game of the season.

The Razorbacks also lost All-SEC performer [autotag]Amber Ramirez[/autotag] to exhausted eligibility and sophomore starter [autotag]Sasha Goforth[/autotag], who retired because of a medical condition.

One of the best players in Fayetteville High School history is stepping away from basketball after diagnosis of a stomach malady.

Sasha Goforth’s high-school career was one of the best in Fayetteville High School history. When the local product decided to return to home to play for the Razorbacks, the future for Hogs basketball was promising.

Goforth averaged 11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks during his first year at Arkansas. But on Saturday night, she revealed she would stepping away from the team for an undetermined amount of time.

“This past year, with the combination of Gastroparesis and anxiety, basketball became too much,” Goforth tweeted. “The side effects affected my performance and kept me feeling miserable. Although this is incredibly hard for me, I know that the best thing for me to do right now is to step away from basketball.”

Arkansas coach Mike Neighbors is breaking in a roster full of new faces.

Much like their counterparts on the men’s side, the Arkansas women’s basketball team will have quite the new look when the season begins November 15 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Senior guard Amber Ramirez is the only senior on the roster. She’s one of two starters back for coach Mike Neighbors. Junior guard Makayla Daniels is the other. They were two of the four double-digit scorers for Arkansas last year. Chelsea Dungee and Destiny Slocum, the other two, are now in the WNBA.

In their stead come Sasha Goforth, Jersey Wolfenbarger, Maryam Dauda and Samara Spencer. The last three are freshmen. The first three are all Arkansas natives. They’re all McDonald’s All-Americans, too.

“I don’t know what the end of this picture looks like with this team yet, but we have unique pieces,” Neighbors said. “We have unique pieces that I’ve never had all under the same roof or on the same team at the same time.”

Goforth is likely to take the biggest early jump as a newcomer. She transferred from Oregon State where she was an All-PAC 12 Freshman. The Fayetteville High grade gives Arkansas a third player who averaged in double figures last year.

Wolfenbarger and Stephens are guaranteed to play, too. Stephens will apprentice under Daniels, to whom Neighbors compared her. Wolfenbarger is a unicorn. She’s 6-foot-6, but listed as a guard.

In time, the scoring and leadership Dungee and Slocum brought will sort itself out, Neighbors said.

“New challenges for them as players to get it together and build it into a cohesive puzzle that we all know what it can and should look like,” he said. “We’re going to have some work to do on role development and shot distribution and playing time but that’s what is fun about this.”
