On the San Antonio Spurs bringing back Sandro Mamukelashvili, Charles Bassey

The San Antonio Spurs have evidently elected to bring back a pair of familiar faces.

The San Antonio Spurs have evidently elected to bring back a pair of familiar faces from the Spurs’ 2023-24 frontcourt rotation in free agency this week, according to recent reporting from the Athletic’s Shams Charania and ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Per Charania, the “San Antonio Spurs are re-signing center Charles Bassey to a fully guaranteed one-year, $2.2 million contract.”

He adds that “Bassey was waived last week with multiple non-guaranteed years on his deal – but now gets a new guaranteed deal and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2025. The reserve big man is expected to return from ACL injury in first half of next season.”

Additionally, per Woj, San Antonio is also bringing back big man Sandro Mamukelashvili “on a one-year, $2.2 million deal.” The folks behind the “TSR Sports” YouTube channel recently took a closer look at the deals.

Spurs bring back young big men Charles Bassey, Sandro Mamukelashvili

The San Antonio Spurs will bring back young big men Charles Bassey and Sandro Mamukelashvili.

The San Antonio Spurs are continuing to build their roster for the 2024-25 season. They were able to make some solid moves thus far with the additions of veterans Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes and now will bring back a couple of young big men.

Charles Bassey, picked up before the 2022-23 season after a season with the Philadelphia 76ers, played 19 games in the 2023-24 season and averaged 3.3 points and 4.0 rebounds along with 0.9 blocks before his season ended due to a torn ACL in December.

The Spurs initially waived Bassey due to his non-guaranteed contract, but they will now bring him back on a 2-year $2.2 million deal.

Along with bringing back Bassey, the Spurs will bring back Sandro Mamukelashvili on a 1-year $2.2 million deal. He averaged 4.1 points and 3.2 rebounds in 46 games in his first full season in San Antonio. He was acquired after he was waived by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2023.

The Spurs will now look ahead to the future and continue to grow as a team around superstar Victor Wembanyama.

What will the San Antonio Spurs be like without Mamu, Cedi Osman, or Charles Bassey?

With any new arrival of traded players, a team’s front office brings on with an eye for improving a team comes the departure of others.

With any new arrival of traded players, a team’s front office brings on with an eye for improving a team comes the departure of others. And that seems to be the case with the San Antonio Spurs after the team drafted a trio of prospects in the 2024 NBA draft.

It was also the case when the Spurs traded for Sacramento Kings veteran forward Harrison Barnes, and signed Golden State Warriors vet floor general Chris Paul. Now, the team appears poised to part ways with players like Sandro Mamukelashvili, Cedi Osman, and Charles Bassey to help make room for the new arrivals.

And not every Spurs fan is happy about this change, as key as it might be for building a contending roster around Spurs star forward Victor Wembanyama.

The folks behind the “TSR Sports” YouTube channel took a closer look at the turnover on a recent episode. Check it out above!

Should the San Antonio Spurs re-sign backup big man Sandro Mamukelashvili?

Should San Antonio part ways with the reserve big man to open up a roster spot?

Should the San Antonio Spurs re-sign backup big man Sandro Mamukelashvili? The team is making itself over into a new form of itself as San Antonio’s front office looks to add players to the roster who best fit their rising star forward, Victor Wembanyama.

Did Mamu prove himself to be such a player for the Spurs at the end of the 2024-24 regular season? Should San Antonio part ways with the reserve big man to open up a roster spot for a player who fits better than he does if this vision of the team is to be from the top to the bottom of the roster?

The host of the “Locked On Spurs” podcast, Jeff Garcia, took some time on a recent episode of his show to sit down with guest Joe Garcia of the “Alamocity Sportscast” pod to talk over Mamu’s future with the Spurs.

Why the San Antonio Spurs should keep Sandro Mamukelashvili

Should the San Antonio Spurs re-sign Sandro Mamukelashvili this offseason?

Heading into the offseason, the San Antonio Spurs will have some tough decisions to make. Victor Wembanyama was incredible in his rookie year, leading the league in blocks and consistently improving his game throughout the season. Now, the Spurs need to focus on putting the best possible team around him.

In addition to free agency and the NBA Draft, the Spurs need to decide which players they want to bring back from this year’s roster. One of those guys is Sandro Mamukelashvili, who will be a free agent this summer. He had a fairly solid season but will need a new contract.

KENS 5 recently discussed the case for San Antonio re-signing Mamukelashvili.

Mamukelashvili averaged 4.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists while shooting 47.1% from the field and 29.7% from behind the three-point line.

Sandro Mamukelashvili says Spurs wanted bounce-back win over Grizzlies

After the San Antonio Spurs’ win over the Memphis Grizzlies, Sandro Mamukelashvili spoke about the team’s desire to win.

The San Antonio Spurs suffered a tough loss on Sunday night, falling to the Philadelphia 76ers in overtime. Tyrese Maxey put on a show, dropping 52 points and leading his team to victory. San Antonio fell up just short. Joel Embiid was out, and the Spurs still couldn’t get the job done against the 76ers, although they came close.

On Tuesday night, the Spurs were looking to get back on track. They had a date with the Memphis Grizzlies in Tennessee, kicking off a quick two-game road trip. Luckily for the Spurs, they were able to bounce back from their tough loss, earning a 102-87 win over the Grizzlies.

After the game, Sandro Mamukelashvili said that the Spurs all wanted to get a bounce-back victory and take down the Grizzlies. (H/t ESPN)

“We all wanted to win this game,” Mamukelashvili said. “We came out [after halftime] and picked up our defense.”

Mamukelashvili finished the game with 11 points, 16 rebounds, and four assists while shooting 4-ofo6 from the field and 1-of-3 from behind the three-point line.

Gregg Popovich praises 2 Spurs bench players after win over Pelicans

Head coach Gregg Popovich showed love to two San Antonio Spurs bench guys after their win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

The San Antonio Spurs are gaining valuable experience down the stretch of this season. Despite sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference for most of the year, they look like a legitimately competitive team. On Friday night, they picked up a win over a New Orleans Pelicans squad that is fighting for playoff positioning.

Perhaps most impressive about the Spurs’ recent competitiveness is who is on the court for them. Against the Pelicans, Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, and Keldon Johnson were all out. That’s going to be the case for most games for the rest of the year. However, the Spurs had some bench guys step up in a big way.

After the game, head coach Gregg Popovich showed love to Devonte’ Graham and Sandro Mamukelashvili. (H/t Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News)

“Devonte’ was superb, Sandro was superb,” Popovich said.

Graham finished the game with 20 points, two rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Meanwhile, Mamukelashvili had 15 points, five rebounds, and two assists.

Gregg Popovich has highest praise for Sandro Mamukelashvili

Head coach Gregg Popovich showed love to Sandro Mamukelashvili after the San Antonio Spurs’ loss to the Golden State Warriors.

On Sunday night, the San Antonio Spurs took on the Golden State Warriors with Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan sitting on the sidelines. They lost in a close game, snapping their three-game win streak. Now, with Sochan and Devin Vassell ruled out for the remainder of the season, San Antonio will have to get creative.

Against the Warriors, Popovich rolled with some of the bench guys. He started Cedi Osman, and Zach Collins put up some solid numbers off the bench. But most notably, Sandro Mamukelashvili played a significant role off the pine, giving the Spurs some great minutes when they needed him most.

“He’s like my favorite player,” Popovich said.

Kelashvili ended the night against Golden State with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists while shooting 4-of-6 from the field.

Sandro Mamukelashvili on getting minutes in Spurs loss to Warriors

After the San Antonio Spurs’ loss to the Golden State Warriors, Sandro Mamukelashvili spoke about getting real minutes.

The San Antonio Spurs dropped the ball on Sunday night, as the Golden State Warriors snapped their three-game win streak. Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan were out, so the Spurs had to rely on the play of some bench guys to fill the void. And while it wasn’t enough to earn them a win, the reserves played well.

Cedi Osman got the start and played well, and Zach Collins posted some solid numbers off the bench. On top of that, third-year big man Sandro Mamukelashvili got a season-high 24:37 against the Warriors. He looked good in his minutes throughout the night.

After the contest, Mamukelashvili said that while he hopes Sochan can return soon, he was happy to earn some playing time. (H/t Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News)

“Injuries suck. I don’t wish that on anybody,” Mamukelashvili said. “Jeremy is my brother. Hopefully, he will recover quick, but it feels great to play.  I stayed ready for 70-something games and never put my head down, just kept hoping for the best. And getting the opportunity means a lot, so I will go out and compete like it’s my first game.”

Mamukelashvili finished the game with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists while shooting 4-of-6 from the field.

Pat Connaughton/Blake Wesley NBA Tracker: Dec. 11-17

There actually is something to report this week.

This past week was one in which Notre Dame’s NBA representation reemerged after a week of inactivity.

[autotag]Pat Connaughton[/autotag] was back in the Milwaukee Bucks’ rotation fresh off missing six games with an ankle injury. He made his return appearance Dec. 16 against the Detroit Pistons, scoring six points, grabbing four rebounds, dishing out two assists and recording one block. One day later against the Houston Rockets, he scored five more points and had four more assists and a steal.

[autotag]Blake Wesley[/autotag] hadn’t seen any game action in two weeks when he was called in near the end of the San Antonio Spurs’ Dec. 15 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. His lone recorded stat was an assist on a 3-pointer by Sandro Mamukelashvili, another Spurs reserve who is struggling to find playing time. One only can wonder whether Wesley will be able to have more regular playing time as the season progresses.
