Vancouver Canucks at San Jose Sharks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Vancouver Canucks at San Jose Sharks sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Vancouver Canucks (28-18-4) visit the San Jose Sharks (22-25-4) Wednesday at SAP Center at San Jose for a 10:30 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Canucks-Sharks sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Canucks at Sharks: Projected starting goalies

Jacob Markstrom vs. Martin Jones

Markstrom won three of his last four games before the all-star break. He’s 18-13-3 on the season with a .916 save percentage and 2.71 goals against average.

Jones has a 13-16-2 record on the season with a .891 SV% and 3.22 GAA. He has been slightly better at home this year with a 10-7-0 record, .895 SV% and 2.98 GAA.

Prediction

Canucks 5, Sharks 4

Moneyline (ML)

The CANUCKS (-115) are road favorites but at higher odds than they should have. The leaders of the Pacific Division are 7-3-0 across their last 10 games and on a three-game winning streak. They’re just 11-13-1 on the road this season, but they lead the season series 2-1, including a 5-2 win in San Jose Nov. 2.

The Sharks (-106) are one of the season’s biggest disappointments. They’ve been slightly improved of late at 5-4-1 across their last 10 games and are a respectable 14-11-1 at home on the season, but they’re not worth backing at anything less than plus-money.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Canucks to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $8.70.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

I’m going to PASS on the puck line. I’d back the Canucks (-1.5, +225) if this game were in Vancouver, but their lackluster road record coupled with the Sharks being better on home ice puts too much risk on the 2-goal margin of victory. There’s also too much juice coming out of the Sharks’ (+1.5, -286) side of the equation.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 5.5 (-133). The Canucks are 4-6 against the Over/Under across their last 10 games, while the Sharks are 3-7 over the same stretch. The first two head-to-head meetings of the season topped this projection before they played to a goal total of 5 their last time out (Jan. 18 in Vancouver). Expect a better offensive performance from the Sharks on home ice.

Anaheim Ducks at San Jose Sharks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Monday’s Anaheim Ducks at San Jose Sharks sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The Anaheim Ducks (19-24-5) and San Jose Sharks (21-25-4) square off at the SAP Center at 10:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Ducks-Sharks sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and betting tips.

Ducks at Sharks: Projected starting goalies

John Gibson vs. Aaron Dell

Gibson has posted a 14-19-3 record with a 2.96 goals against average and .906 save percentage with one shutout overall this season. It’s been a mixed bag for Gibson against the Sharks, as he allowed just one goal on 36 shots in a 3-1 win back Oct. 5 at home, and he allowed five goals on 35 shots in his most recent meeting with San Jose, also at ‘The Pond’, Nov. 14.

Dell has managed an 8-9-2 record with a 2.90 GAA and .909 SV%. Head coach Bob Boughner confirmed Sunday that Dell will tend the twine. He allowed three goals on 33 shots in his only appearance this season against the Ducks Oct. 5, while yielding four goals on just 21 shots in an overtime loss in Anaheim last March 22. His only win in three career starts vs. ANA came Jan. 21, 2018 in SoCal.

Prediction

Sharks 4, Ducks 2

Moneyline (ML)

The SHARKS (-150) are worth a roll of the dice against their Golden State brethren from down south. The Ducks (+125) are 3-9 in their past 12 meetings with the Sharks, while going just 5-13 in their past 18 Bay Area skates. The favorite is also 4-1 in the previous five battles in this series.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The SHARKS (-1.5, +180) are a decent small-unit play at this price, as you can nearly double up. It’s anything but a guarantee, as both of these clubs are subpar, and the goaltending edge might go in Anaheim’s favor. However, the offensive edge definitely goes to San Jose.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (-115) bettors might need an empty-net goal late in the game to cash. The over is my lean, but I don’t feel very strongly about it at all. The best bet is to AVOID.

San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The San Jose Sharks (21-23-4) and Colorado Avalanche (25-15-6) square off at Pepsi Center Thursday with puck drop set for shortly after 9 p.m. ET. We analyze the Sharks-Avalanche sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Sharks at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Aaron Dell vs. Philipp Grubauer

Dell has effectively taken over as the starting backstop in San Jose ahead of the stumbling Martin Jones. He has posted an 8-8-2 record with a 2.84 goals against average and .909 save percentage. Dell has posted four of his wins in six starts since flipping the calendar from December.

Grubauer is 12-10-4 with a 2.92 GAA and .909 save percentage so far this season. He will look to rebound after a 3-2 setback in overtime against the Dallas Stars Tuesday, blowing a 2-0 lead.

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Sharks 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Avalanche (-209) have been tumbling lately, but they have the offensive firepower to break out of their slump at any time. Look for the Avs to be able to crack the combination for Dell early and often in this one.

The home team has cashed in 40 of the last 56 meetings in this series, and the favorite is 37-14 in the past 51 meetings overall.

PASS on the moneyline bet, as a $10 bet on Colorado to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of just $4.80.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The AVALANCHE (-1.5, +125) are the play in this one, mainly because they’re at home. The Sharks (+1.5, -154) have struggled away from home, going 8-12-3 overall, a major reason they’re in the bottom half of the standings and outside of the playoff picture at the moment.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-150) is the lean here, but I don’t like the fact that it’s not ‘regular’ juice. You shouldn’t have to lay -150 on a wager which is generally -110, or -115 at most. Therefore I’d skip this one. You can do an alternate line of OVER 6.5 (+135) at plus-money for a better value, and with the high-powered offenses on both sides, this might be the way to go.

San Jose Sharks at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s San Jose Sharks at Pittsburgh Penguins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The San Jose Sharks (17-21-3) and Pittsburgh Penguins (24-11-4) open their 2020 calendar year with a 7 p.m. ET tilt at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. We analyze the Sharks-Penguins odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Sharks at Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Aaron Dell vs. Matt Murray

Dell owns a 3.15 goals against average, .900 save percentage through 12 starts and three relief appearances. Like the team in front of him, the fourth-year NHLer has struggled with consistency. Dell is, however, coming off a December that saw improvement in his save percentage (.911 in December vs. .890 prior). He’s been solid over his last three road games, but the most recent of those was Dec. 7.

Murray has logged a 2.96 GAA and .894 SV%. His save mark is 40-plus points lower than that of Penguins backup Tristan Jarry. Murray only appeared in three December games, and he was woeful over that stretch and the few games preceding it. The 25-year-old owns a .853 SV% over his last seven games.

Prediction

Pittsburgh 3, San Jose 2

Moneyline (ML)

This post-holiday JV matchup in goal takes too much of an edge off of what would likely be a play on San Jose (+155) with a big price. As listed, this is a decent Penguins (-189) club which has won seven of its last eight games overall and four in a row on home ice. The Pens do a credible job in creating quality scoring chances, and they don’t rely on power-play opportunities to score (Pittsburgh ranks seventh in goal scoring and merely 14th on the PP). PASS.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Sharks are on their second of a five-game road trip, and they played two nights ago (Dec. 31 — losing, 2-0, to the bottom-feeder Detroit Red Wings). San Jose has lost five in a row on the road. The Sharks rank 26th in scoring and 30th in allowing goals; they are 1-for-their-last-23 on the PP.

There are some analytics (recent Corsi figures, goalie trends, expected goals for and against) that would make the Sharks a play in some situations. But, that card will sit in the back pocket for now.

PASS on San Jose (+1.5, -167).

Over/Under (O/U)

There is a bit of value with some defensive pros for the Sharks and offensive cons for the Penguins. Take the UNDER 6.5 (-149).

Vegas Golden Knights at San Jose Sharks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Vegas Golden Knights at San Jose Sharks sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Vegas Golden Knights (19-13-6) visit the San Jose Sharks (16-19-2) Sunday at SAP Center at San Jose for a 10 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Golden Knights-Sharks sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Golden Knights at Sharks: Projected starting goalies

Marc-Andre Fleury vs. Martin Jones

Fleury is 14-7-3 with a .915 save percentage and 2.63 goals against average. His last time out, he gave up five goals on 34 shots in an overtime loss against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday.

Jones remains a volatile starting option for the Sharks. He leads the league in both losses (14) and goals allowed (87). He is 12-14-1 with a .888 SV% and 3.29 GAA.

Golden Knights at Sharks: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Golden Knights 6, Sharks 3

Moneyline (ML)

The Sharks (+125) come into Sunday off of back-to-back losses to the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday (3-2) and St. Louis Blues on Saturday (5-2). They’ve dropped eight of their last nine games and are 2-7-1 across their last 10 games. They remain a strong fade despite an adequate 10-10-0 home record.

The GOLDEN KNIGHTS (-150) will be the play. They’ve been off since that loss to the Canucks on Thursday. They’re 6-2-2 across their last 10 games and 9-7-3 on the road for the season. Vegas has a plus-6 goal differential on the season while San Jose is at minus-30.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Golden Knights to win outright returns a profit of $6.67.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

VEGAS (-1.5, +180) has significant advantages in Corsi (total shot attempts), scoring chances and PDO (save percentage plus shooting percentage) at 5-on-5. Back the visitors to win by at least 2 goals for a greater return on your investment. The same $10 bet will return a profit of $18.

The Golden Knights are 15-23 against the spread overall and 8-11 on the road while the Sharks are just 16-21 ATS overall and 9-11 at home. Eleven of the Golden Knights’ 19 wins on the season have been decided by margins of at least 2 goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 5.5 (-150) and feel free to wager heavily. The Knights are 4-6 against the Over/Under across their last 10 games and the Sharks went 5-5 against the projected totals, but it’s a battle of two shaky goaltenders. Both sides will be able to put up a comfortable goal total and send this one Over the number in the second period.

Washington Capitals at San Jose Sharks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Washington Capitals at San Jose Sharks sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The San Jose Sharks (15-12-1) host the Washington Capitals (19-4-5) Tuesday at SAP Center at San Jose. Puck drop is scheduled for shortly after 10:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Capitals-Sharks sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Capitals at Sharks: Projected starting goalies

Braden Holtby vs. Martin Jones

Holtby has gone 3-1-1 over his last five outings and is coming off a victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning Friday in which he allowed three goals on 30 shots. He has a .909 save percentage and 2.86 goals against average for the year.

Jones seems to finally be on track following a horrid start to the season. The 29-year-old has won four straight games. He is 12-8-1 overall with a .896 SV% and 3.03 GAA.

Capitals at Sharks: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated 10:15 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Capitals 5, Sharks 3

Moneyline (ML)

The CAPITALS (-133) hold the top spot in the Metropolitan Division and share first place in the NHL. The Sharks (+110) are home underdogs as they enter play fourth in the Pacific Division. San Jose has won two straight games by an aggregate score of 8-3 and is 9-6-0 on home ice. Washington has won three straight with one of those games going to overtime. It’s 11-2-1 on the road.

Take the visitors as the team to extend its winning streak. Washington has the edge in total shot attempts, scoring chances and PDO (shooting percentage plus save percentage).

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Get better value on WASHINGTON (-1.5, +195) by banking on a win by two or more goals. The Caps are 16-12 against the spread overall and 11-3 on the road. The Sharks are just 13-15 overall and 7-8 at SAP Center. Four of the Capitals’ 11 road wins have been by a margin of at least two goals and four of the Sharks’ six home losses were by at least two goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 6.5 (+100) and count on the Capitals to handle the bulk of the scoring against the volatile Jones. The Caps and Sharks are both 6-4 against the Over/Under across their last 10 games. The Capitals have played to a goal total of seven in each of their last three games.

New York Islanders at San Jose Sharks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s New York Islanders at San Jose Sharks sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Islanders (16-3-1) travel cross country to face the San Jose Sharks (11-11-1) at SAP Center Saturday at 10:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Islanders-Sharks odds and lines while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Islanders at Sharks: Projected starting goalies

Semyon Varlamov vs. Martin Jones

Varlamov has a 7-2-1 record with a 2.70 goals against average and .912 save percentage. He looks to rebound after giving up a whopping 12 goals in his previous three starts.

Jones has a 8-8-1 record with a 3.34 GAA and .885 SV%. He has won four of his last five starts but has given up three or more goals in four straight outings. Jones has seen one 30-plus shot game over the previous five starts.

Islanders at Sharks: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 10:55 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Sharks 4, Islanders 2

Moneyline (ML)

The SHARKS (-110) are almost dead even on the moneyline at home despite winning six of their last seven games. Yes, the goaltending is less than optimal but San Jose is more than capable of outscoring its goaltender.

The Sharks should be able to take advantage of an Islanders team on the first leg of their West Coast trip.

A $10 bet with San Jose results in a $9.09 profit with an outright win for the Sharks.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

A fast start is vital for the Sharks here. This one is tough but lean to San Jose (-1.5, +215) for the heavy value.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-134) is dangling a carrot and we are taking this hook, line, and sinker. Yes, it carries some inherent risk, but San Jose could score four or more by themselves if Varlamov starts. They have a familiarity with him from his days with the Colorado Avalanche.

Placing a $10 bet here will give a bettor a decent $7.46 profit with a total of six or more goals scored.
