Almada blows the roof off Mercedes-Benz Stadium with two late bangers

The World Cup winner put his team on his back

Let’s all enjoy Thiago Almada in MLS while we can.

On MLS opening day, Atlanta United entered stoppage time trailing 1-0 to San Jose as a crowd of 67,538 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium was set to go home disappointed.

Jeremy Ebobisse gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute and despite a number of chances, Atlanta could not find the back of the net.

But then Almada lighting struck twice, as the recently crowned World Cup winner scored not one, but two incredible goals to give the Five Stripes a dramatic 2-1 win.

In the 93rd minute, the 21-year-old was played a short corner and with some time at the top of the box, he fired home a stunning effort off the underside of the crossbar.

But Almada was far from done. In the 99th minute Atlanta United was given a free kick, setting the stage for the Argentine to curl home the winner.

Per Opta, it was only the second time in MLS history a player had scored a match-tying and match-winning goal in stoppage time of a single match.

Almada has been widely tipped to depart Atlanta United in the near future, with clubs in Europe lining up for his signature. He may have earned his club a couple extra dollars with his match-winning heroics on Saturday.

It’s not a great idea to call Chicharito a clown

“The best way to respond to a tifo like that is scoring two goals and celebrating like a clown”

San Jose Earthquakes fans learned a harsh lesson on Saturday night: Don’t call Javier “Chicharito” Hernández a clown.

The Quakes met the LA Galaxy in the latest edition of the Cali Clasico, and the home fans unveiled a tifo before the match that didn’t quite sit well with their opponent’s star forward.

“The LA circus — same clowns, different costumes,” read the banner, along with a picture of a pair of clowns.

Just 12 minutes into the game, Chicharito opened the scoring in front of the home fans at Stanford Stadium and celebrated, of course, like a clown.

The striker would go on to score again in the second half, reaching 17 on the season, as the Galaxy notched a crucial 3-2 victory. After the game, Hernández thanked the Quakes fans for providing him with a little extra motivation on the night.

“You know, sometimes people think that those kinds of stuff is going to put our confidence in ourselves down and they do completely the opposite. They motivate us, they motivate me at least,” he said.

“So, thank you. Thank you for the people to put that [tifo] because that brought something else from me, because now I had more desire to win and to get the three points.”

The striker added: “The best way to respond to a tifo like that is scoring two goals and celebrating like a clown.”

FC Cincinnati keeps up with new MLS trend, demolishes San Jose Earthquakes 6-0

6-0 is so hot right now

If you want to be a Cool Team in MLS, you better win a game 6-0.

FC Cincinnati became the latest team to post the league’s most fashionable margin of victory, thrashing the San Jose Earthquakes by that increasingly common scoreline Saturday night. Brenner had a hat trick, while Luciano Acosta continued his MVP candidacy with one goal and two assists.

It’s the fifth time this season MLS has seen a 6-0 final score, with the Philadelphia Union involved three (wins over D.C. United, the Colorado Rapids, and Houston Dynamo). NYCFC also beat Real Salt Lake by that scoreline back in April.

For much of the first half, it didn’t look like Cincinnati was going to get in on the hot new trend. After 44 minutes, San Jose had kept it scoreless at TQL Stadium, and usually if you want to win a soccer game 6-0, you really have to start scoring early, to make your opponent start to take risks and give you openings.

Instead, Cincy only got started just before halftime, with Álvaro Barreal finishing with power after some snappy one-touch passing between Brandon Vázquez and Luciano Acosta.

They were in a hurry to pad that lead, as Vázquez nodded Acosta’s free kick down for Brenner to smash home just 74 seconds into the second half. However, things slowed down again, and Cincy only got their third on an Acosta penalty kick in the 71st minute.

That’s right about where the wheels fell off for the Quakes. San Jose made a triple sub, while the hosts brought in two players of their own. Everyone was more or less agreeing the game was over…except no one told Cincy’s attackers. Four minutes later, Yuya Kubo’s run from deep was rewarded by a well-weighted Brenner through ball that the Japanese midfielder tucked away expertly.

4-0 is a great night at the office, but everyone wins 4-0 once in a while. In MLS in 2022, 6-0 is the requirement to be cool, and Cincinnati clearly wanted to fit in. That was Brenner’s cue, and the Brazilian capitalized on an unfortunate series of events for the Earthquakes. First, U.S. under-20 Niko Tsakiris did enough to prevent Acosta from touching the ball around him, but his attempt to poke the ball away skipped back towards center back Nathan, who effectively just trapped the ball as a favor to Brenner, who ran past him to score.

Nathan wasn’t done helping out his fellow Brazilian, though, committing a stoppage-time foul on Sergio Santos to give Cincy a penalty. Brenner accepted the gift with gratitude, firing home from the spot to give himself a second hat trick of 2022.

Cincinnati didn’t have time to push into the avant garde territory of 7-0, which the Union have also managed to do, but give them a few weeks getting used to being a Cool Team before they start to get into some boundary-pushing territory.

Luchi Gonzalez to take San Jose Earthquakes head coach job after World Cup

With Gonzalez, San Jose may finally be thinking long-term

Luchi Gonzalez is coming back to MLS.

The U.S. men’s national team assistant coach will take over as the head coach of the San Jose Earthquakes once the 2022 World Cup comes to an end. Interim head coach Alex Covelo and his staff will remain in place for the rest of the MLS season.

“I’m really excited for this opportunity with one of the league’s founding clubs,” said Gonzalez in a team press release announcing the hire. “I thoroughly enjoyed working with the club’s leadership team throughout the interview process and was impressed by their vision for the future, both on and off the field.”

“Chris Leitch and his team have put together a solid foundation of players and I’m looking forward to working with them. As excited as I am for this opportunity, I’m going to remain focused on helping the U.S. National Team be as successful as possible through the FIFA World Cup and I will be ready to give everything for San Jose once that journey is over.”

San Jose has been under interim leadership since mid-April, when former Argentina national team midfielder Matias Almeyda was let go after the Quakes began the season on a seven-game winless run. Under Covelo—who was moved up from the club’s MLS Next Pro side—San Jose improved, going 5W-4D-3L in their first dozen games. However, a recent six-game winless run has brought them back into the race for the Wooden Spoon, as they have 24 points with nine games to play.

“Luchi has all of the attributes that we sought in our next head coach,” said San Jose GM Chris Leitch. “He has had success coaching in Major League Soccer with playoff appearances in his first two seasons and has a very strong track record in youth development. His strengths and desires align with our short and long-term goals as a club, and we look forward to him taking the reins after the World Cup.”

Previously, Gonzalez moved from enormous success with the FC Dallas academy—arguably the most productive youth program in MLS—to the head coaching job in Frisco. Gonzalez took Dallas to the playoffs in 2019 and 2020, but was dismissed in September 2021 after winning just six of 26 matches.

Gregg Berhalter hired Gonzalez as a USMNT assistant just three months later, where he helped the team work its way through the Octagonal to qualify for the World Cup.

What can Quakes fans expect?

Gonzalez’s teams in Dallas preferred to build out of the back and, without the ball, relied on an aggressive counter-press to win it back. There aren’t major differences between how Gonzalez’s sides played and how Berhalter’s USMNT does, which makes sense given how quickly the former joined the latter’s coaching staff once he became available in 2021.

Gonzalez’s approach is certainly a departure from Almeyda’s all-or-nothing man-marking system, which contributed to the Quakes being a must-watch team for good and bad reasons. A 4-3-3 formation is likely the first choice, though Gonzalez showed during his time in Dallas that he’s not particularly dogmatic on that front.

Hiring Gonzalez is also the kind of move you make when your club is ready to start fielding young players on a regular basis. The Quakes have not been that kind of team in 2022, with only three players under the age of 23 (Cade Cowell, Benjamin Kikanovic, and Marcos López) getting more than 118 minutes of playing time.

López has already moved on, being sold to Feyenoord in the summer window, but San Jose may be ready for a longer-term youth movement. They had 11 players called up for various USYNT squads this spring, and their MLS Next Pro side’s first season has been reasonably successful, with only six teams doing better than the 31 points that Earthquakes II have managed this season.

Gonzalez also has reason to feel like his FC Dallas departure came a bit too soon, with the club’s problems at the time relating more to repeatedly missing on big-money signings while also losing high-end youngsters to European transfers. Dallas didn’t improve, either, winning just one game in their final eight.

For San Jose, a long-term direction would be welcome. The Quakes have arguably been MLS’s most aimless club in recent years, making the playoffs just twice in the last decade, and have not won a postseason game since November 4, 2012.

In other words, Gonzalez is taking on a big challenge, but the stage is also clear for him to try to build the club into something formidable for the first time in years.

MLS Madness spreads nationwide as league breaks goalscoring record

MLS was, even by MLS standards, completely bonkers Saturday night

Summer in MLS can be a rough time. You’re too far away from the real pressure of making or missing the playoffs, it’s hot and humid everywhere, teams are figuring it out after transfer window moves. It can feel very much like everyone’s biding their time for September and October.

Not August 6. MLS Madness™ took hold in nearly every corner of the country, with goals galore, teams scoring and conceding in the deepest depths of stoppage time, big-name stars scoring bangers, and everyone basically went bananas. It was a perfect advertisement for the league: fun, flawed, weird, and inexplicable.

For one thing, MLS broke a league record for goals scored in one night. Across 13 games Saturday night, teams combined for 57 goals, an average of well over four per game. The old record of 46 was left in the dust.

As the league itself once said, This Stuff Kicks!

In chronological order, let’s go through one of the wildest nights in MLS history:

Prediction

San Jose Earthquakes 1, Real Salt Lake 0

Moneyline (ML)

SAN JOSE (+110) has been rolling along, and is expected to dump Real Salt Lake (+250). The Earthquakes rolled up six goals in Group B stage play, going 2-0-1 with a plus-3 goal differential. RSL limped through Group D play with a win, a draw and a loss, pumping in two goals while conceding two. RSL’s defensive play will it in the match, but the Earthquakes will be able to do enough to bounce Salt Lake from the bubble.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 2.5 (+105) is an attractive play, as Real Salt Lake has played suffocating defense throughout this tournament. RSL’s offense isn’t tremendous, which is a great recipe for Under plays. The past four meetings in this series have each hit the Under, too, including two 1-0 results and a scoreless draw in the previous three.
