San Diego State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Aztecs miss from the Mountain West’s Mountain Division?

San Diego State has to play Boise State on the road to open up the Mountain West season. That’s not great, but the date with Air Force from the Mountain Division is at home in the regular season finale, and New Mexico on the road is about as soft as an away game gets.

That means there’s no Utah State – the defending Mountain West champion – to deal with. There’s also no Colorado State or Wyoming on the schedule.

San Diego State Football Schedule What To Know: Welcome to the new digs

San Diego State kicks off the opening of its spiffy new Snapdragon Stadium with Arizona coming to town to start a run of three home games in the first four dates and four in the first six.

It’s going to be an intimate 35,000-seat venue that has to give the team some semblance of an advantage that wasn’t there last season when the team played in Carson, California.

It also helps that three of the last four games are at home, too.

San Diego State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s more than reasonable. Eventually.

The road game at Utah is tough, but the Aztecs were able to pull off the win over the eventual Pac-12 champion last season. Arizona and Toledo aren’t going to be pushovers, and going to Boise State will round out a sneaky-tough first part of the year.

There’s a week off before going to Nevada and Fresno State, but if San Diego State is San Diego State, it should rip through November with one big push.

San Diego State Aztecs College Football Preview 2021: Offense

Even under the new coaching staff the offense was able to run well – averaging close to 200 yards per game – but the passing attack just couldn’t click. There wasn’t much happening down the field and there were too many stalls against the better teams on the back half of the schedule. That’s why …

Finding a quarterback is Job One in fall camp. Georgia Tech transfer Lucas Johnson was okay in his limited work, and Jordon Brookshire was a bit better when he got his chances, but Carson Baker led the team with 617 passing yards and three scores – and now he’s in the transfer portal. In comes Jalen Mayden from Mississippi State to make it a three-way race for the gig.

Also coming over from Mississippi State is Tyrell Shavers, a 6-6 super-recruit receiver for Alabama who left to play for Mike Leach and the Bulldogs. He joins a deep group with the top seven wide receivers returning, including 21-catch tight end Daniel Bellinger coming off an all-star season.

The offensive line might need the most shuffling around and work. There’s size and enough overall experience to be okay around Zachary Thomas at one tackle spot, but no matter how this puzzle gets put together, the group has to be far stronger at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

The running game will get production from the quarterback, but the companion of Greg Bell and Chance Bell are back and should combine to average at least five yards per carry. The ground attack improved by over a full yard per carry – that will continue.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: San Diego State Aztecs Offense 3 Things To Know

– Welcome back Brady Hoke, and welcome in new offensive coordinator Jeff Hecklinski – Hoke’s assistant at SDSU the first time around and then at Michigan. Now they have to try ramping up the nation’s 110th best and Mountain West’s worst offense that averaged just 343 yards and 21 points per game.

Ryan Agnew ended his career with a three-touchdown bang in the bowl win over Central Michigan, but he didn’t push the ball down the field – that was the offense. He’s gone, and now it’ll be up to backup Carson Baker and Georgia Tech transfer Lucas Johnson to add more pop to the mix. In this offense, being able to run matters – both can do that.

– The receivers are in place, and now they’ll get the chance to do a whole lot more. Leading target Kobe Smith is a 6-2, 190-pound veteran who caught a team-high 58 passes for 691 yard and four scores – but he’s not alone. Sophomore Jesse Matthews and junior TE Daniel Bellinger return after combining for five scores.

Even with six receivers/tight ends transferring out, the top eight pass catchers are expected to return, along with Ball State TE transfer Nolan Givan and a few nice options from the recruiting class.

Who’s the next great San Diego State running back? Juwan Washington was banged up and missed too much of last year, but he still led the season in rushing.

Washington is gone, but Chance Bell is a good back who was Deondres on the team with 384 yards, and Chase Jasmin is a solid veteran with 11 rushing scores over his three years. Nebraska transfer Greg Bell brings a little more pop.

The offensive line was always solid under Rocky Long, but it struggled for the ground game and allowed too many plays behind the line. Three starters are expected back, mostly missing C Keith Ismael after he bolted early to the NFL. Kyle Spalding is a good left tackle, and 6-5, 350-pound William Dunkle is a massive pounder at guard.
