The San Diego Padres (19-20) and Chicago Cubs (22-15) play the rubber match of a 3-game set Wednesday. First pitch from Wrigley Field is set for 2:20 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Padres vs. Cubs odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: San Diego leads 3-2

Chicago, which was a -163 home favorite, picked up a 3-2 win in the 2nd game of the series Tuesday. Two of Chicago’s 3 runs came via solo HRs, including a walk-off homer from 1B Michael Busch off Padres RHP Enyel De Los Santos. The Cubs had 10 hits to San Diego’s 9 and 16 total bases to San Diego’s 12.

San Diego secured a 2-1 lead in the top of the 8th, but the Cubs scored 2 unanswered runs over the final 2 innings to come away with the win.

Padres at Cubs projected starters

RHP Dylan Cease vs. RHP Hayden Wesneski

Cease (4-2, 2.55 ERA) makes his 8th start. He has a 0.80 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9 and 10.2 K/9 in 42 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 6 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 8 K in 7-1 win over Arizona Diamondbacks Friday
  • Career vs. Cubs: 3-2, 2.86 ERA (34 2/3 IP, 11 ER), 22 H, 16 BB, 43 K across 6 starts

Wesneski (2-0, 0.54 ERA) makes his 3rd start. He has a 0.72 WHIP, 1.6 BB/9 and 7.6 K/9 in 16 2/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 6 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 8 K in 3-1 loss vs. Milwaukee Brewers Friday
  • Career vs. San Diego: 1-0, 1.80 ERA (5 IP, 1 ER), 4 H, 1 BB, 3 K in 1 start, a 5-2 home victory April 27, 2023

Padres at Cubs picks and predictions

Prediction

Padres 4, Cubs 3

Moneyline

LEAN PADRES (-120).

San Diego is 5-2 in its last 7 games and 3-2 in its last 5 on the road. The Padres are also 2-1 in their last 3 matchups vs. Chicago and 4-2 in the last 6 meetings.

This is a lean because each team is 5-5 in its last 10 games overall, and they’ve split the last 10 head-to-head meetings 5-5, as well.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

I fully expect the Cubs to cover here as +1.5 (-165) underdogs, as they are the better team ATS at 22-15, while the Padres are only 20-19. However, this line is far too expensive, so bet the moneyline and/or total instead.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 8.5 (-130).

The Under has hit in 2 of Chicago’s last 3 games and is 6-3 in its last 9. The Under has also hit in 7 of the last 10 San Diego-Chicago matchups.

Be aware that the Over has hit in 5 of San Diego’s last 7 games.

San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The San Diego Padres (19-19) visit the Chicago Cubs (21-15) at Wrigley Field Tuesday for Game 2 of their 3-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Padres vs. Cubs odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Padres lead 3-1

San Diego took the opener 6-3 as a slight -103 underdog Monday with the Over (7.5) hitting after 8 combined runs were scored in the 6th inning.

Cubs LHP Justin Steele returned after landing on the IL following a short start Opening Day, while former Cubs RHP Yu Darvish took the mound for the visiting Padres, and both came out throwing. Steele worked 4 2/3 scoreless innings and Darvish tossed 5 scoreless frames.

With Steele removed, San Diego scored 6 in the top of the 6th against the Cubs bullpen behind LF Jurickson Profar’s 2-run single, 3B Donovan Solano’s RBI single and C Luis Campusano’s bases-clearing double.

The Cubs runs came thanks to home runs by DH Christopher Morel (2-run shot in 6th to hit the Over) and C Yan Gomes (solo in 7th).

Padres at Cubs projected starters

RHP Randy Vásquez vs. LHP Shota Imanaga

Vásquez (0-1, 5.87 ERA) makes his 3rd start. He has a 1.83 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9 and 5.9 K/9 in 7 2/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 2 2/3 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 2 K in 10-9 loss at Colorado Rockies April 25
  • Allowing 1.25 SLG with 2 outs and 2.00 WHIP with 2 outs and RISP
  • Never faced Cubs before

Imanaga (5-0, 0.78 ERA) makes his 7th start. He has a 0.75 WHIP, 1.0 BB/9 and 9.1 K/9 in 34 2/3 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 7 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 7 K in 1-0 victory at New York Mets Wednesday
  • 2024 home stats: 2-0, 1.13 ERA (16 IP, 2 ER), 0.56 WHIP in 3 starts
  • First time facing Padres

Padres at Cubs picks and predictions

Prediction

Cubs 7, Padres 6

Moneyline

The Cubs don’t lose back-to-back games often — just 4 times so far this season. They are 10-4 (71.4%) after a loss (71.4%). The Padres, on the other hand, are 8-10 (44.4%) after a win.

We also can’t ignore this pitching matchup. Imanaga has been phenomenal. Until he slips up, it’s hard to bet against him, which is why I’m willing to lay more juice than usual.

BACK CUBS (-165).

Run line/Against the spread

That being said, I would hesitate in taking Chicago against the spread. As a home favorites, the Cubs are a bottom-10 team, covering in just 4 of 11 attempts (36.4%).

The Padres are the opposite. As a road dogs, they have the 2nd-best ATS record at 9-2 (81.8%).

Even at plus-money on the Cubs (-1.5, +120), I’ll PASS.

Over/Under

The Padres are tied with the 3rd-highest Over rate at 56.8% (21-16-1).

The Over is 4-1-1 in the Cubs’ last 6 games when the O/U line is set at 8 or more runs.

LEAN OVER 9 (-115).

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The San Diego Padres (18-19) and Chicago Cubs (21-14) open a 3-game set Monday. First pitch from Wrigley Field is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Padres vs. Cubs odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Padres lead 2-1

The Padres snapped a 4-game winning streak with an 11-4 loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday while failing to cash as -106 road favorites.

CF Jackson Merrill led the way on offense for San Diego with a 2-run homer, while C Kyle Higashioka was the only other Padres player with an RBI. RHP Matt Waldron allowed 7 earned runs in 3 innings to pick up the loss.

Chicago has won back-to-back games after taking down the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0 Sunday and cashing as a +126 home underdog.

Cubs 2B Nico Hoerner had 2 RBIs, while SS Dansby Swanson had a solo homer in the winning effort. RHP Javier Assad allowed 0 earned runs in 6 innings to pick up the win.

Padres at Cubs projected starters

RHP Yu Darvish vs. LHP Justin Steele

Darvish (1-1, 3.45 ERA) makes his 7th start. He has a 1.15 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 in 28 2/3 innings.

  • Padres are 4-2 in his starts, including 3-0 in his last 3
  • Has allowed 11 ER and 2 HR while striking out 25 and walking 10

Steele (0-0, 1.93 ERA) makes his 2nd start. He allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits and 1 walk with 6 K’s in 4 2/3 innings in his season debut, a 4-3 Opening Day loss in 10 innings at the Texas Rangers.

  • Has been sidelined with a hamstring injury
  • 2023 home stats: 12-3, 2.65 ERA (102 IP, 30 ER), 1.19 WHIP in 18 starts

Padres at Cubs picks and predictions

Prediction

Cubs 5, Padres 4

Moneyline

BET CUBS (-110).

The Cubs have won back-to-back games, both at home, and have scored 5 or more runs in 3 of their last 4. They get Steele back on the mound for the 1st time since Opening Day and face a Padres team that is 4-6 in its last 10. Combine Chicago’s hot offense with its ace returning, and it should see a 3-game winning streak.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

The moneyline has better value for the Cubs.

Over/Under

BET OVER 7 (-120).

The Cubs have scored 5 or more runs in 3 of their last 4 games while allowing 5 or more in 2 of their last 4.

The Padres have scored 6 or more runs in 4 of their last 5 games and 6 of their last 10 while allowing 4 or more in 7 of their last 10. They have hit the Over in 7 of their last 10.

San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The San Diego Padres (12-13) and Chicago Cubs (13-9) continue a 3-game set at Wrigley Field Wednesday. First pitch is at 7:40 p.m. ET (MLB Network). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Padres vs. Cubs odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Cubs lead 1-0

The Padres were rudely welcomed to the friendly confines with a 6-0 shutout by the Cubs Tuesday. They managed just 5 hits in a brutal 40-degree evening. It figures to be a similar evening Wednesday, and the Friars are going to need a spark.

The Cubs got a great start from LHP Justin Steele Tuesday as he allowed just 3 hits over 5 1/3 shutout innings with 5 strikeouts. C Yan Gomes went 4-for-4 with a HR and 3 RBIs Tuesday. He’s hitting .309 with 5 homers and 12 RBIs on the young season. Chicago is 6-4 in the last 10 and sits just 2 games out of 1st place in the NL Central.

Padres at Cubs projected starters

RHP Michael Wacha vs. LHP Drew Smyly

Wacha (2-1, 7.08 ERA) makes his 5th start this season. He has a 1.72 WHIP, 2.7 BB/9 and 8.0 K/9 in 20 1/3 IP.

  • Last start vs. Arizona Thursday: 4 IP, 5 ER, 10 H, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Has not faced Cubs since 2019; 0-2 with a 7.03 ERA in last 5 GS against them from 2017-19

Smyly (2-1, 3.13 ERA) makes his 5th start. He has a 0.91 WHIP, 2.0 BB/9 and 9.0 K/9 in 23 IP.

  • Last start vs. Dodgers Friday: 7 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 10 K

Padres at Cubs picks and predictions

Prediction

Cubs 4, Padres 3

Moneyline

San Diego is a slight favorite, but I’m rolling with the Cubs again Wednesday. Wacha has allowed 12 ER in his last 2 starts and has bad history in Wrigley. Smyly has been so good the last 3 starts, I had to do a double take. He has allowed 2 ER in 18 2/3 IP (0.96 ERA). It’s slated to be 43 degrees again Wednesday. Advantage baby bears.

Take the CUBS -105.

Run line/Against the spread

The Cubs are 13-8 on the RL and 6-7 at home this season. And I love their side of the RL but don’t like the -185 attached to it. Head to the Win/Total section and take the CUBS AND UNDER 9.5 (+185).

You could go Cubs and Under 8.5 (+240) for an even bigger payout if you so choose.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

We smashed the Under at +105 here Tuesday, and the conditions are pretty similar Wednesday. It’s a chilly 43 degrees with a with a 9-mph gust coming in from right-center. The Padres are 5-4-1 O/U over the last 10, and Chicago is 6-4. I’m not as keen on the Under as I was yesterday, but I’ll still toss a HALF-UNIT at UNDER 7.5 (+100).

San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The San Diego Padres (12-12) and Chicago Cubs (12-9) open up a 3-game set at Wrigley Field Tuesday. First pitch is at 7:40 p.m. ET (MLB Network). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Padres vs. Cubs odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Padres won 5-2 in 2022.

The Padres are hitting their groove, winners of 4 of the last 5 before Monday’s off-day. The crazy thing is they’re doing it despite that OF Fernando Tatis Jr. (.167), OF Juan Soto (.198) and 3B Manny Machado (.220) are failing to hit for a respectable batting average. The Friars are 7-4 on the road thus far.

The Cubs got off to a hot start but lost 3 of 4 to the Dodgers over the weekend. They’ve been playing well on both sides of the field, ranking 2nd in BA (.280) and OPS (.796); and 2nd in OBA (.214), 7th in runs/9 allowed (3.91) and 3rd in pitcher strikeouts (9.83).

Padres at Cubs projected starters

LHP Blake Snell vs. LHP Justin Steele

Snell (0-3, 6.00 ERA) makes his 5th start this season. He has a 1.89 WHIP, 6.5 BB/9 and 10.5 K/9 in 18 IP.

  • Last start vs. Atlanta Braves last Tuesday: 5 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 3 BB and 5 K
  • Has not faced Cubs since 2017
  • Went 4-2 with a 3.06 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 12.1 K/9 on the road last year

Steele (3-0, 1.44 ERA) makes his 5th start. He has a 0.88 WHIP, 2.9 BB/9 and 8.6 K/9 in 25 IP.

  • Last start vs. Oakland Athletics Wednesday: 6 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB and 5 K
  • 1 start vs. San Diego last season on June 13: 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 0 BB and 3 K

Padres at Cubs picks and predictions

Prediction

Cubs 3, Padres 2

Moneyline

The edge goes to Chicago Tuesday. They’re playing better on both sides of the field, and Steele has been one of the better starters in the league thus far. It’s supposed to be a miserable, 40-degree day. A California team is definitely at a disadvantage in those conditions.

Take the CUBS (-130).

Run line/Against the spread

This figures to be a close game. However, San Diego +1.5 (-190) is too much juice to consider to keep it within a run, and the Cubs -1.5 (+155) aren’t likely enough to pull away and win by multiple runs to warrant any action.

PASS.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

Chicago is 6-4 O/U in the last 10, and the Padres are 5-4-1. Again, it’s supposed to be 40 degrees with a 14-mph wind blowing in from left-center field. Those are two ingredients to keep the ball in the park Tuesday. The Under is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings in Chicago.

Take the UNDER 7 (+105).
