Prediction

Mavericks 127, Spurs 118

Moneyline (ML)

The absence of Aldridge for the Spurs (+165) looms large in this one with the MAVERICKS (-200) back to full health. The Mavs beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 139-123 at home Monday, and they’re among the best road teams in the NBA with a record of 19-9 as the visitors. They’re 6-4 over their last 10 games following an ugly stretch over the last week of January into the first week of February.

The Spurs suffered a 131-103 road defeat at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder Sunday, and they’re just 4-6 across their last 10 games. They sport a lackluster home record of 14-12 for the season. The Mavs lead the season series 2-0 with wins by scores of 117-110 (Nov. 18) and 102-98 (Dec. 26). Back the visitors on the moneyline, but there’ll be better value on the spread.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Mavericks to win returns a profit of $5.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Back the MAVERICKS (-4.5, -110) to win by at least 5 points, as they did in the season’s first head-to-head meeting. The second game was tighter, but Aldridge was active and put up 17 points with seven rebounds in the loss for San Antonio.

The Mavericks have the much better season trends, going 31-24-3 against the spread overall and 18-7-2 on the road. The Spurs are just 24-31-1 ATS overall and 9-17 at home. The Mavs are 10-3-1 ATS as the road favorite and win those games by an average of 11.1 points while covering the spread by an average of 6.1 PPG.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 232.5 (-106). Dallas and San Antonio rank 1-2 in the NBA in Over percentage for the season, respectively, and they both top the projected total by an average of 4.6 PPG. Aldridge is out for the hosts, so look for Mavs PF Kristaps Porzingis to have a huge game. He’s averaging 18.5 PPG for the season, but he’s averaging 26.3 PPG over his last eight games.

Three takeaways from OKC’s 131-103 win over the Spurs

Oklahoma City set a franchise record with a 28-point victory over San Antonio Sunday, with eight Thunder players scoring in double-digits.

Oklahoma City had a historic beat down of San Antonio on Sunday night, notching the largest margin of victory in franchise history with their 131-103 win over the Spurs.

Here are three takeaways from the game:

Double-double trouble

Oklahoma City had three different players that posted a double-double against the Spurs. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while Steven Adams had 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Chris Paul also had a quieter double-double, with 10 points and 11 assists. He finished the game with nine rebounds, unaware he was a single rebound shy of a triple-double.

He likely would’ve gotten it had it not been for the lopsided score midway through the third quarter.

When asked about it after the game, he joked that it was Billy Donovan keeping him from the triple-double, saying “he won’t let me be great”.

The game plan worked

On Saturday, Nerlens Noel said that he strategy for defending LaMarcus Aldridge was “just to bother him”, and the game plan appeared to work.

In the three previews games between the Thunder and Spurs this season, Aldridge had been averaging 28.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. On Sunday, he finished with just eight points and 3-of-10 shooting.

Oklahoma City also did a good job of defending without fouling, spending Aldridge to the line for just two free-throw attempts.

Lu Dort was perfect

Dort continues to play his way towards a full-time contract. The two-way player was one of eight Thunder players in double figures on Sunday, scoring 15 points while going a perfect 6-of-6 from the field.

The rookie padded his stat line with two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Two nights after Chris Paul said people “don’t understand” the importance of Dort and the things he does on the court, Dennis Schroder said that the first-year player is “changing the game”.

Oklahoma City sets franchise record with 28 point victory over Spurs

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Steven Adams both recorded double-doubles as the Thunder beat San Antonio 131-103 on Sunday night.

Oklahoma City notched their biggest win over the Spurs on Sunday evening, defeating San Antonio 131-103 inside Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 22-point, 13-rebound double-double, the Thunder shot 57.5% from the field and 45.5% from 3-point range.

Steven Adams also posted a double-double, going for 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Thunder set a new franchise record with eight different players in double figures. In addition to SGA and Adams, Lu Dort had 15, Dennis Schroder scored 13, Chris Paul and Danilo Gallinari each had 12, while Nerlens Noel and Abdel Nader both added 10 apiece.

The 28 points are also the largest margin of victory over the Spurs in franchise history. According to Maddie Lee of The Oklahoman, the previous record was a 19-point win back on March 26, 2016.

LaMarcus Aldridge, who had been averaging 28.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in three games against the Thunder this season was held to a quiet night, scoring just eight points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field.

Noel had said that the game plan coming into Sunday was “just to bother” Aldridge.

Dejounte Murray, who also scored 25 in the game between San Antonio and the Thunder on Feb. 11, picked up a couple of quick fouls. He ended the night scoreless, going 0-of-7 from the floor.

DeMar DeRozan was also a non-factor as Oklahoma City held the Spurs’ leading scorer to just 11 points.

But DeRozan was part of history on Sunday night when he was stripped by Chris Paul late in the second quarter. The steal was the 2,208th of Paul’s career, moving him above Clyde Drexler for seventh on the NBA’s All-Time Steals list.

With the win, the Thunder have now won 12 of their last 15 and finish the regular-season series against the Spurs 2-2.

Oklahoma City will face a significant test over the next month as they play nine of their next 14 games on the road.

OKC is back in action Tuesday night in Chicago.

Chris Paul moves into 7th on All-Time steals list

Paul recorded his 2,208th career steal on Sunday against the Spurs, moving him past Clyde Drexler, up to No. 7 on the all-time steals list.

Chris Paul’s box score from the Thunder’s victory over the San Antonio Spurs shows only one steal. But that one was one for the record books.

Paul moved into seventh place on the NBA’s all-time steals list on Sunday night, surpassing Clyde Drexler.

The historic moment came late in the second quarter of Oklahoma City’s 131-103 beat down of the San Antonio Spurs. It happened when Paul swiped the ball away from DeMar DeRozan with 1:28 remaining in the half.

The 2,208th career steal puts Paul within 100 steals of No. 6 on the list, former Chicago Bulls great, Scottie Pippen.

He is still 1,057 steals behind John Stockton, who holds the career record of 3,265, although Paul does top the steals list for all active players.

He came into Sunday averaging 1.5 steals a game, the lowest average of his career.

The six-time steals champion led the league in back-to-back seasons in 2007-08 and 2008-09 when he averaged 2.7 and 2.8 steals per game, respectively.

He then led the league in steals for four straight seasons between 2010 and 2014.

For his career, Paul is averaging 2.2 steals per game.

Dennis Schroder available against Spurs

Schroder tweaked his ankle in the third quarter of Oklahoma City’s 113-101 win over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night.

Dennis Schroder is available on Sunday night against the San Antonio Spurs.

There was some question about his status after he rolled his ankle during the third quarter of Oklahoma City’s win over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night.

Schroder had been able to participate in light practice on Saturday that consisted primarily of a walkthrough with no running and no contact. At the time, Billy Donovan had said he would know more about Schroder’s status once they got to Chesapeake Energy Arena ahead of OKC’s game against the Spurs.

Donovan updated Schroder’s status just after 5 p.m. CT, letting the media know that he would be available.

Over his last 10 games, Schroder is averaging 21.2 points in 31.9 minutes per game, shooting 45.9% from the field.

He hasn’t played quite as well against San Antonio this season. In Oklahoma City’s three prior games against the Spurs, Schroder is averaging just 14.7 points, shooting just 39.5% from the floor.

Preview: Thunder seeks to split regular-season series with San Antonio

Oklahoma City is 1-2 against the Spurs after falling 114-106 on Feb. 11. Sunday is the final regular-season meeting between the two teams.

DeMar DeRozan wasn’t in the lineup the last time that the Oklahoma City Thunder faced the San Antonio Spurs.

He will be on Sunday.

DeRozan is the Spurs’ top scorer, averaging 22.9 points per game and shooting 53.2% from the field.

Even without DeRozan, San Antonio dispatched the Thunder 114-106 on Feb. 11 thanks in part to a 25-point, 14-rebound double-double from LaMarcus Aldridge and 25 points from Dejounte Murray.

Aldridge is only averaging 19.0 points and 7.6 rebounds on the season, but his stats are way up against OKC, averaging 28.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in three games this year.

Nerlens Noel said that his defensive gameplan against Aldridge on Sunday is “just to bother him”.

Meanwhile, the Thunder come into Sunday having won 11 of their last 14. One of their three losses, however, was to the Spurs.

In that game, Chris Paul scored a game-high 31 points, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (17), Danilo Gallinari (15), and Dennis Schroder (14) were all in double-figures.

Billy Donovan talked after Oklahoma City’s win over the Denver Nuggets on Friday about his three guards being able to coexist and thrive within the offense, saying “it wouldn’t have worked if those guys didn’t have the attitude, mentality they had towards it.”

“I talked to them before the season ever started. I told them there was going to have to be a level of sacrifice. That they all couldn’t have the ball in their hands, that they were going to have to play off each other. I think they were all really on board trying it, and they knew they weren’t going to have their hands on it the whole time.”

It may be only two of the guards that are able to go Sunday against the Spurs.

Dennis Schroder tweaked his ankle in the third quarter of Friday night’s win, although he did return and logged 29 minutes of game time.

Donovan said on Saturday that Schroder was able to participate in a light practice, but that he would know more about Schroder’s status on Sunday.

Noel’s strategy against LaMarcus Aldridge is ‘just to bother him’

In three games against Oklahoma City this season, Aldridge is averaging 28.7 points and 10.7 rebounds while shooting 62.5% from the field.

Oklahoma City has had a difficult time stopping LaMarcus Aldridge this season.

In the three previous games against OKC this year, Alridge is averaging 28.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.

He scored 39 in the first meeting back on Nov. 7, and 22 on Jan. 2.

Alridge posted another double-double in San Antonio’s win over the Thunder back on Feb. 11, scoring 25 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in the 114-106 victory.

In that game, both Steven Adams and Nerlens Noel drew Aldridge as a defensive assignment. Adams played 32 minutes, scoring 10 points but racking up five fouls. Noel wasn’t a ton of help in relief, limited to just eight minutes while picking up four personals.

But this time around, Noel has a different game plan.

He told Maddie Lee of The Oklahoman that his strategy for guarding Aldridge on Sunday is “just to bother him.”

“There’s some exceptional post players in the league and he’s one of them. He always makes tough shots, but you know, I have a different mindset than last game. You know, just want to bother him in certain different ways. Switch it up. You know, there are guys that are able to wrap your arms up and all that little silly stuff. So, you know, I’ve got to be mindful of that, keep the fouls low and not put anybody on the free-throw line as much as I have been. So, it’s little things that will make a difference.”

Despite the team-high 25 in the last game, Alridge’s shooting percentage wasn’t great. He made just 9-of-30 from the floor but did go to the free-throw line eight times, where he made seven of his attempts.

The Thunder and Spurs will tip-off inside Chesapeake Energy Arena at 6 p.m. CT on Sunday evening in their final matchup of the regular season.

Prediction

Thunder 112, Spurs 101

Moneyline (ML)

Each team comes into Sunday’s game having won back-to-back games, the first of which for the Spurs (+165) came against the Thunder (-200) in the game before the All-Star break. The 114-106 win for the Spurs gave them a 2-1 lead over the Thunder in the season series and came despite Thunder PG Chris Paul‘s 31-point performance.

Paul has played well against the Spurs in his career—his 18.8 points and 8.1 assists per game are better than his career averages. I expect Paul to have another quality start against the Spurs and for him to get enough help to get past the Spurs Sunday.

PASS ON THE MONEYLINE though because the -200 odds for the Thunder to win are too chalky.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The THUNDER (-5.5, -106) have the best against the spread record in the NBA (26-11) versus conference opponents whereas the Spurs (+5.5, -115) are in the bottom-10 of the NBA with a 13-19-1 ATS record against the West. Also, San Antonio comes into Sunday games sluggish and the Thunder are 7-0 ATS in their last seven Sunday games.

The Spurs average 113.2 PPG to rank 10th in the NBA but their average drops tp just 102.4 PPG on Sundays. The Thunder should be dialed into this matchup since dropping their last meeting.

BET THUNDER -5.5 (-106) to win by at least 6 points.

Over/Under (O/U)

The silver lining to the Spurs’ offensive struggles on Sundays is that they allow just 110.2 PPG on Sundays, as well. Their defense is ranked 22nd in opponent points per game which contributes to the Spurs’ 33-21-1 Over/Under record. San Antonio’s O/U record is 1-7 in its last eight Sunday games and the Thunder’s O/U record is 0-3-1 in their last four games as a home favorite. Plus, the Under is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in Oklahoma City.

TAKE UNDER 221.5 (-110).

Schroder reportedly participated in light practice, “seemed fine”

Dennis Schroder rolled his ankle midway through the third quarter of Oklahoma City’s 113-101 win over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night.

Dennis Schroder reportedly participated in a light practice on Saturday but his status for Sunday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs is still up in the air.

Schroder rolled his ankle midway through the third quarter of Oklahoma City’s 113-101 win over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. The injury occurred as he was guarding Will Barton near midcourt. When Barton changed direction, both he and Schroder slipped at the edge of the Thunder logo, and Schroder stayed down for a few seconds holding his ankle.

He left the game but did return minutes later and finished the night with 11 points.

According to Maddie Lee of The Oklahoman, the Thunder’s practice consisted primarily of walkthroughs that didn’t include contact or running, so Schroder was able to participate to some extent.

Billy Donovan called Schroder a “complete warrior”, and told Sports Illustrated that his guard “seemed fine”.

Donovan also told Lee “once we do some stuff tomorrow at the arena, we’ll have a better idea of where he’s at.”

Should Schroder not be able to go, it could open up minutes for Hamidou Diallo who has not seen much action since Lu Dort became part of the regular rotation midway through January.

Oklahoma City is back at home on Sunday when they host the San Antonio Spurs.

Prediction

Jazz 116, Spurs 105

Moneyline (ML)

The Jazz (-304) are a decent-sized home favorites over the Spurs (+240) on Friday night. Utah has been fantastic at home this season, winning 11 of their last 13 games at the Vivint Smart Home Arena. Meanwhile, the Spurs are just 9-19 on the road this season, and they have lost five-straight games in Utah. However, PASS on this moneyline bet as the odds just aren’t attractive enough to bet on either side.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The JAZZ -7.5 (even) are big favorites against the Spurs +7.5 (-121) against the spread on Friday night. While Utah has actually struggled ATS as of late (3-6 in their previous nine contests), the Spurs (23-30-1 on the season) haven’t been much better. But given how well Utah has played at home this season, take the Jazz to cover this spread as they should win by double-digits over San Antonio.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total for this Western Conference matchup is set at 223.5 points, which feels just about right. Utah has the No. 6 ranked scoring defense this season, allowing only 107 points per game. However, their home defense is even better as they are allowing only 104 points per game in Utah. With the recent scoring woes for the Spurs, expect the UNDER (-115) to hit in Utah on Friday night.
