Clemson ‘no doubt’ a top school for Pendleton after elite junior day visit

Among the headlining visitors in attendance for Clemson’s Elite Junior Day, this past Saturday was Reagan (Pfafftown, N.C.) four-star Sam Pendleton, the No. 20 offensive tackle in the 2023 class, according to Rivals.

Pendleton (6-5, 295) spoke with The Clemson Insider about his experience on campus this past weekend. It was his first time back in The Valley since Clemson pulled the trigger on a scholarship offer, which came on Friday, Jan. 14.

“It was really good,” he said. “I enjoyed it very much.”

While Pendleton is not the only offensive lineman that Clemson has offered in the 2023 recruiting class, he was the only one on campus for the Tigers’ elite junior day. That allowed for some quality one-on-one time with Thomas Austin, which Pendleton highlighted as the best part of his trip.

He had the freedom to ask Clemson’s offensive line coach anything he wanted and got some answers he was looking for in return. Pendleton’s relationship with Austin has taken off since the latter took over as Clemson’s offensive line coach.

Of course, Pendleton camped at Clemson this past summer, but their relationship was a little different when Austin was an offensive analyst and not the head guy. At that time, Pendleton was trying to impress Robbie Caldwell, learn what his philosophy is and learn all he could about him.

“I think it takes a lot of stress off your shoulders, especially since you have an offer, first of all,”  Pendleton said regarding being able to talk with Austin on his visit. “And then second of all, especially with a younger guy, who you can kind of relate to better, has young kids and is willing. I’m not saying Coach Caldwell wasn’t (willing), but they’re very different in their coaching styles, I think. It’s really relieving to have that opportunity and sit down and talk with (Austin) and not feel stressed.”

Though, Pendleton was the first offensive lineman that Austin offered a scholarship to, once he took over the reins of his current post from Caldwell.

“I’m the last dude they’ve offered, but it’s really good to know that he still thinks I’m a good prospect and I’m good enough to play for Clemson football,” he said. “He definitely voiced that to me over the weekend. And, It was good for my parents too to have that direct face-to-face, one-on-one, no other distractions to talk to him and ask questions about school because they’re involved.”

Pendleton personally feels like his parents enjoyed the visit. When it comes to his recruitment, he indicated that his parents keep their opinions to themselves because they don’t want to sway how he feels one way or another. Though, what little bit they did share, they really enjoyed the talks that both Austin and Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave.

“Clemson is very family-centered, very faith-based,” Pendleton said, “which my mom and my dad loved and that’s what is important to me too. So, it was really great for them and for me.”

What was the most important thing Pendleton learned about Clemson this past weekend?

“I would say the most important thing I learned is how intentional they are in building men and not just football players,” he said. “Because we heard from a panel of players and there was a guy from West Forsyth (High School) that I know, K.J. Henry. I knew him in high school and just hearing him talk now after being here for four years, really just showed what that program can do for people as people.”

Clemson stressed the importance of education to Pendleton and Austin understands how important of a factor that is for him in his recruitment. He even got to meet the president of Clemson University, Jim Clements.

That certainly doesn’t happen on every visit, just ask Pendleton.

Going into this past Saturday’s visit, Pendleton was looking behind the scenes of the operation. He wanted to learn more about the program. He wanted to see the coaches, the atmosphere and the players. He was able to talk with Swinney, which was a big thing for him.

“Yeah, I’m not gonna talk to the head coach every day, but I want to see what he thinks about and how he is,” Pendleton said. “A lot of people can talk the talk and then when you get with them in person, they’re different. But, that’s not the case with Coach Swinney. He’s the same guy no matter where you are, no matter what time it is.”

Pendleton met Swinney Saturday morning and then it’s 10:30 p.m. and he’s playing basketball at the gym in his house.

“He’s definitely a great person and all his coaches,” Pendleton added. “He doesn’t just recruit players that have a lot of integrity. All of his coaches on staff have immense integrity.”

While we didn’t want Pendleton to compare and contrast this visit to others, we asked him what makes Clemson’s junior day stand out.

“I think this was a lot more intentional,” he said. “There were 19 guys that came and I was the only offensive lineman. I keep going back to that because you’re not gonna get that anywhere you go. Even if there were three of us. Usually, you go to a junior day and there’s five or six — at the least — offensive lineman. It was very intentional…the whole day was really what they are about as a program and a culture because that’s important to Coach Swinney.”

According to Pendleton, Swinney talked for over two hours about where he came from, why he does what he does, what he thinks he’s gonna do, how he’s gonna do it and how he has done it.

“It’s a lot different than hearing from a coach for 15 minutes about how he puts guys in the league, stats, stats, stats and then he turns it over to another person,” Pendleton quipped. “Coach Swinney did all that himself, which he didn’t have to do. That was really cool.”

Clemson certainly helped itself in its pursuit of Pendleton. The Tigers were definitely already up there in his recruitment and for Pendleton, they climbed, even more, this past weekend. Clemson will be one of the schools at the top of his list — which he plans on releasing Tuesday morning — after this weekend’s visit.

Pendleton is still on track to commit sometime between late February and the first two weeks of March. The timeline has gotten a little hazy because of some visits lately. This past month, in addition to Clemson, Pendleton also made visits to Penn State, N.C. State, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

Clemson is set to host a plethora of top talent on Saturday, when the Tigers will hold their elite junior day and welcome some of the nation’s top prospects in the 2023 class to campus.

One of the headlining junior day visitors will be Birmingham (Ala.) Briarwood Christian four-star signal caller Christopher Vizzina (pictured above), the No. 8 quarterback and No. 85 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Vizzina camped at Clemson last summer and returned to campus for the Wake Forest game on Nov. 20, when he picked up an offer from the Tigers. He will be the lone quarterback on campus for Clemson’s elite junior day.

“I’m super excited,” he told The Clemson Insider. “It’s their elite junior day, so everybody up there is one of the top players in the country, so that should be really awesome.”

Among the other headliners expected to be on hand for Clemson’s elite junior day are a pair of five-star defensive tackles in Thompson High School (Alabaster, Ala.)’s Peter Woods and Warner Robins (Ga.) High School’s Vic Burley.

Woods, ranked as the No. 4 defensive lineman in the 2023 class per the 247Sports Composite, released a top six in December that included Clemson along with Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Oregon. The Tigers extended an offer to Woods back on June 1 of last year – the first day they began offering prospects in the 2023 class. He visited Clemson during the Dabo Swinney Camp last June and returned to campus for the Boston College and Florida State games in October.

Burley, ranked as the No. 6 defensive lineman in the 2023 class according to the 247Sports Composite, likewise received an offer from Clemson on June 1. He was on campus last June as well and returned to Tiger Town for the UConn game in November.

Several other big-time defensive linemen are also slated to be in attendance for Saturday’s elite junior day, including Highland Home (Ala.) four-star Keldric Faulk, Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola four-star Derrick LeBlanc, Columbus (Ga.) Carver four-star Darron Reed, New Bern (N.C.) four-star Keith Sampson and Hickory (N.C.) four-star Rico Walker.

Faulk, Reed, Sampson and Walker all earned offers from Clemson earlier this month. Sampson dropped a top five on Jan. 15 featuring Clemson, Georgia, NC State, Ohio State and South Carolina, while LeBlanc, who received an offer from Clemson last September, named the Tigers one of his final seven schools in December along with Florida, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State and UCF.

A longstanding Clemson cornerback target in the 2023 class who will make his way back to campus Saturday is Atlanta (Ga.) Westlake four-star Avieon Terrell – of course, the younger brother of former Clemson and current Atlanta Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell.

Clemson offered the younger Terrell back in April 2020, and he’s made countless trips to The Valley ever since. He is ranked as the No. 15 cornerback and No. 103 overall prospect nationally in the 2023 class, per Rivals.

Terrell will be joined at Clemson’s elite junior day by a couple of other standout defensive backs: Coppell (Texas) four-star cornerback Braxton Myers and Selma (Ala.) four-star safety DaKaari Nelson.

Myers received an offer from Clemson on Wednesday of last week, and head coach Dabo Swinney paid a visit to his school earlier this week. Nelson doesn’t currently hold an offer from the Tigers, though they’re showing substantial interest and co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Mickey Conn stopped by his school on Thursday.

“Lately they’ve been saying they like the way I play and they want to offer me, but Coach Swinney wants to see me in person before they do,” Nelson told The Clemson Insider in a phone interview Thursday.

Other prominent prospects planning to attend Clemson’s elite junior day include Roswell (Ga.) Blessed Trinity Catholic four-star running back Justice Haynes, Pfafftown (N.C.) Reagan four-star offensive lineman Sam Pendleton, Lakeland (Fla.) four-star wide receiver Tyler Williams and Jacksonville (Fla.) Andrew Jackson four-star linebacker Grayson Howard.

As always, visitor lists like this one are fluid and subject to change. But here is the full list of prospects that The Clemson Insider has confirmed as expected visitors for Saturday’s elite junior day:

Warner Robins (Ga.) 2023 5-star DL Vic Burley

Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson 2023 5-star DL Peter Woods

Priority OL target talks visit from Swinney, previews elite junior day visit

The Clemson Insider has the latest on a priority offensive lineman target in the 2023 recruiting class, who received a visit from Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and offensive line coach Thomas Austin Wednesday.

Clemson stopped by Reagan High School (Pfafftown, N.C.), home to four-star offensive tackle Sam Pendleton.

We caught up with Pendleton to get his thoughts ahead of his visit to Clemson this weekend for the program’s elite junior day.

“It was really cool,” Pendleton said. “Coach Dabo texted me after he left, actually, and told me that he really enjoyed talking to my coaches and the staff there and that he’s looking forward to getting me down there this weekend to talk more.”

That goes a long way for Pendleton and truly means a lot to him and his high school.

“No one knew about Reagan six months ago,” he added. “It means a lot to me. It means a lot to my coaches. I know that he took his time, especially you know he could be home coaching or home with his family, but he took his time to come up here. Especially with Coach Austin to see me, to see my mom, my little brother and to see my coaches.”

Pendleton continues to build a close bond with Austin, who held up his end of the bargain and made his way down to Reagan this week.

Obviously, Pendleton has become a priority target for Clemson in the 2023 recruiting class. He was one of the first prospects that Austin reached out to after he got elevated to his new position and has kept hard after him ever since.

What has Pendleton heard from Austin recently?

“He wants me to make me a part of the Clemson family and he wants me to be a leader in this class coming in,” he said, “and he’s just super excited about getting me on campus this weekend.”

Clemson sent Pendleton an itinerary for this weekend’s festivities and he indicated that junior day will be about being around the coaches and getting some face-to-face time that they wouldn’t normally get. They’ll get some time to talk about things that Pendleton may want to talk about and do things he didn’t get to do at camp.

In any event, Pendleton is “super pumped” for this weekend’s events.

4-star North Carolina OL dishes on Clemson offer, ‘looking forward’ to upcoming visit

Sam Pendleton doesn’t blow smoke.

After receiving an offer from Clemson, one he’d been hoping for, the 2023 four-star offensive tackle out of Reagan (Pfafftwon, N.C.) spoke with The Clemson Insider and was pretty candid about the state of his recruitment and what an offer from the Tigers ultimately means to him.

“It was a really, really big deal to me,” Pendleton said. “I was definitely emotional. Clemson’s been a dream for me for a long time. Ever since I was in seventh or eighth grade, once I started paying attention and got serious about football…it just means a lot to me.”

He referred to his Clemson recruitment as a “rollercoaster,” but couldn’t be happier to now have an offer from the Tigers in hand. Clemson offered the standout lineman from the Tar Heel State on Thursday, Jan. 14.

Pendleton has been in contact with Thomas Austin ever since he took over as Clemson’s offensive line coach. With that being said, how would he characterize his relationship with Austin?

“Right now, me and Coach Austin, we’re pretty close,” he said. “But that’s to be expected because I haven’t been down to meet him as the new offensive line coach. It’s as close as can be, as expected. He texts me every day, asks me how I’m doing. It’s just the small things. He’ll ask me about my family, ask me about my sister’s basketball thing. It’s not all about football and he knows that because he’s a family guy, which I respect.”

Pendleton camped at Clemson this past summer and he got pretty close with Caldwell, especially over these past six months.

“I feel like Coach Austin is a very capable candidate,” he said. “Just at camp, when he was still in an assistant role, he was very helpful. He was really involved. Coach Caldwell voiced his interest in me, even as a younger guy and Coach Austin took that and ran with it at camp. He was always around me, giving me pointers, stuff that makes me more efficient, stuff to fix. Always just giving me great advice.

“For what little experience I have around Coach Austin, he’s a great coach. On the field, he’s very calculated, knows what he’s doing and obviously, he’s been studying under a really good coach in Coach Caldwell and I think he’s really deserving of a job and I think he’s gonna do a great job.”

“Coach Austin is relatively young. It encourages me as a recruit with Coach Austin because he’s with what’s going on in the modern-day, where the game is trending. The game never stops going up, something always is gonna change. Coach Austin being in the position that he is and also with the football world, I feel like he has a really great understanding of where it’s going in the future and I feel like he has a great vision for that.

Right now, Austin plans on stopping by Reagan High School sometime this week to watch him work out. Pendleton is slated to attend Clemson’s Elite Junior Day on Saturday, Jan. 29.

While Pendleton is looking to make his commitment decision in mid-to-late February, he thinks it’s a bit premature that multiple recruiting services have pegged him to commit to Michigan already. He doesn’t think that’s fair to the other schools recruiting him, especially Clemson.

“Yes, Michigan is a really great option,” Pendleton said. “They’re a really good university. I love (Michigan offensive line) Coach (Sherrone) Moore, but also it’s Clemson. I feel like no one is taking into account that that was like my school for a long time. I’m not gonna lie, at the beginning of my recruitment, Clemson was the one school that I really wanted to hear from. Now that that’s happened, I said earlier, Clemson, Penn State and Michigan, they’re all on a level playing field right now. There’s no leader for me.

“I’m an honest guy. I don’t B.S. anybody. I don’t like to sugarcoat because I don’t like to be sugar-coated. If I want to talk to somebody, I want you to be honest with me, even if it hurts my feelings, regardless of what happens. I don’t blow smoke. I’m just saying that I can’t rank those top-3 right now.”

So, Pendleton will weigh his options, likely between those three aforementioned schools. Sometime next month after he takes his visits, he’ll sit down with his parents and make a decision on his next home. His parents have been very influential in his recruitment process, not necessarily telling Pendleton where to go, but helping him weigh his options and leave no stones unturned.

“I’m looking behind the scenes,” he said. “I want to see why you think, what you think and who you think about. Why would I fit there? Where would I play? How would I fit into your scheme? Why do you think I should come to your school? Because I learned something really early in my recruitment, you control where you go.”

That’s especially true when it comes to Clemson for Pendleton.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to Clemson — I’ve been already — but, I’m looking for the small things. Hands down, Clemson is one of the coolest places I’ve been. The weight room is amazing. The fields, the area is great, Death Valley is like no other, but everywhere has something like that, especially the big programs. I want to see the coaches, the atmosphere, the players. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”

Clemson has extended a new offer to a standout lineman from the Tar Heel State.

Reagan High School (Pfafftown, N.C.) four-star offensive lineman Sam Pendleton reported the offer via social media Friday.

“After a great conversation with (Clemson offensive line coach Thomas Austin) I am very blessed to say that I have received my dream offer to play for and go to school at (Clemson),” Pendleton wrote in a Twitter post.

Pendleton – a 6-foot-5, 295-pound junior in the class of 2023 – is ranked by Rivals as the No. 20 offensive tackle and No. 230 overall prospect in the country for the 2023 class.

Pendleton is slated to attend Clemson’s elite junior day Jan. 29. He was previously on campus for the Dabo Swinney Camp last June.

Pendleton told The Clemson Insider recently that he was looking to make his commitment decision in mid-to-late February.

“If Clemson was to offer, they would be one of my top schools no doubt,” he said to TCI last month.

In addition to Clemson, Pendleton has offers from schools such as Penn State, NC State, Michigan, North Carolina, Duke, Louisville and South Carolina.

4-star North Carolina OL ‘really excited’ about upcoming Clemson visit

Clemson has been showing considerable interest in a standout offensive line prospect from the Tar Heel State who plans to visit campus next month.

Reagan High School (Pfafftown, N.C.) four-star tackle Sam Pendleton is slated to attend the Tigers’ elite junior day Jan. 29.

“I’m really excited about it!” Pendleton said of the upcoming trip to Tiger Town.

Pendleton – a 6-foot-5, 290-pound junior in the class of 2023 – was previously on campus for the Dabo Swinney Camp in June, when he was able to work out with Clemson offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell.

Pendleton said he typically hears from Caldwell on a weekly basis, and the two were in touch again this past weekend.

“Right now, he’s just talking about how he likes the way I’m growing and maturing as a player and person,” Pendleton said. “And that he is excited to get me down on January 29th.”

“Last summer, Coach (Caldwell) mentioned that he likes my flexibility and coachability in camp,” Pendleton added.

When he returns to Clemson in January, Pendleton looks forward to hopefully having a conversation with Swinney.

“Coach Swinney has a lot of integrity and that is important to me, and he is also a great coach for football and for the real world,” Pendleton said. “At least that’s what I’ve heard.”

In addition to Clemson, Pendleton currently has a couple of other visits scheduled on his calendar: Penn State on Jan. 15 and NC State on Jan. 22.

The Nittany Lions and Wolfpack have both offered Pendleton, along with schools such as Michigan, North Carolina, Duke and Louisville.

Pendleton has a timeframe in mind for when he wants to render his commitment decision.

“I wanna make a decision in mid-to-late February,” he said, “to allow myself time to go to junior days.”

Where would the Tigers stand with Pendleton if they decided to pull the trigger on an offer before his decision?

“If Clemson was to offer, they would be one of my top schools no doubt,” he said.

Pendleton is ranked by Rivals as the No. 20 offensive tackle and No. 230 overall prospect in the country for the 2023 class.

Clemson expressing interest in rising North Carolina OL

Clemson is showing interest in a standout offensive line recruit from the Tar Heel State whose recruiting stock has steadily risen over the past few months.

Tigers offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell was recently in touch with Reagan High School (Pfafftown, N.C.) four-star junior tackle Sam Pendleton.

“I talked to Coach Caldwell last week,” Pendleton told The Clemson Insider earlier this week. “Basically we talked about me as a recruit and his interest in me.”

Pendleton, a 6-foot-5, 290-pound prospect in the class of 2023, expected to receive a school visit from Caldwell this week.

“He said he is planning to come by this week,” Pendleton said.

When they communicated last week, Caldwell expressed his excitement about Pendleton’s development since this past summer, when the two were able to work together at the Dabo Swinney Camp.

“He told me that he was impressed in camp and that I have just gotten bigger and better since then,” Pendleton said. “And that he is fired up about me.”

Pendleton earned his first offer from Marshall this past June before Duke and East Carolina jumped into the mix with offers in September. NC State followed suit with an offer in October, and Michigan, Penn State and Louisville all joined his offer list in November. North Carolina was the latest school to offer last week.

This season, Pendleton made game-day visits to Michigan, Penn State, NC State, Louisville, Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia Tech, South Carolina and East Carolina.

Pendleton had planned to visit Clemson for the Wake Forest game last month, but it didn’t end up working out for him to make the trip. However, visiting Clemson again is something he is still thinking about.

“I do hope to get back down soon,” Pendleton said.

“I loved it there and the coaching staff was great,” he added, reflecting on his experience at the Swinney Camp in June.

Pendleton has been quoted as saying he wants to make his commitment decision in January.

He is ranked by Rivals as the No. 20 offensive tackle and No. 231 overall prospect in the 2023 class.
