Commanders quarterback Sam Hartman injures shoulder late in preseason opener

Sam Hartman injures throwing shoulder in the fourth quarter of preseason opener.

Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels shined in his NFL debut, completing two of his three passing attempts for 45 yards before ending his only drive with a touchdown run in the Week 1 preseason game against the New York Jets.

Daniels wasn’t the only rookie quarterback making his NFL debut for Washington. Undrafted rookie Sam Hartman began the second half under center for the Commanders and looked comfortable.

With the game tied at 10 entering the fourth quarter, Hartman led the Commanders on a 12-play, 73-yard drive in which he completed four of five passes for 45 yards and also rushed for 17 yards. Rookie running back Michael Wiley capped off the drive with a short touchdown run to give Washington a 17-10 lead.

At some point in the fourth quarter, Hartman took a hit that seemingly injured his shoulder. The Commanders brought back Jeff Driskel to finish the game.

Hartman finished the day completing eight of 13 passes for 83 yards and rushed for 15 yards on two attempts.

As Washington was leaving the field at the end of the game after a 20-17 loss, Hartman had an ice bag on his injured right throwing shoulder, per Sam Fortier of The Washington Post.

We’ll continue to follow this story and offer any potential updates.

Jets defeat Commanders 20-17 after a late field goal

The Commanders come up short in the preseason opener, but a perfect debut for Jayden Daniels.

The New York Jets defeated the Washington Commanders 20-17 in the first preseason game for both teams.

Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels started the game and completed two of his three passes for 45 yards, including a beautiful 42-yard completion to wide receiver Dyami Brown. Daniels capped off the drive with a three-yard touchdown run, and his day was over.

Veteran Marcus Mariota replaced Daniels, and he only played one drive before making way for Jeff Driskel and undrafted rookie Sam Hartman.

The Commanders took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter before Jets quarterback Andrew Peasley connected with wide receiver Jason Brownlee on a 12-yard touchdown to tie things up.

Washington kicker Ramiz Ahmed made a 40-yard field goal, with Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein answering it before halftime to tie things up at 10 apiece.

After a scoreless third quarter, Hartman led the Commanders on an impressive drive that rookie running back Michael Wiley capped off with a short touchdown run. New York answered when Israel Abanikanda scored to tie it up at 17.

Jets kicker Austin Seibert hit a 37-yard field goal with under one minute remaining to clinch New York’s win.

Washington’s quarterbacks combined to complete 18 of 32 passes for 212 yards and did not turn the ball over. The Commanders rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

Washington is set to have another joint practice next week, this time with the Miami Dolphins, before the two teams play one another in Week 2 preseason action.

WATCH: Jets’ fans wants a photo with Commanders rookie quarterback

Only it’s not Jayden Daniels.

It’s not uncommon for fans of other teams to want to get a photograph or autograph of the opposing team’s quarterback. And when your opponent’s quarterback is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft. That’s even more understandable.

That quarterback is Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders.

This week, the Commanders were in Florham Park, New Jersey, for a joint practice with the New York Jets. There were fans in attendance. Before practice, some fans were on the field looking to get a picture with Washington’s quarterback.

Only it wasn’t Daniels. No, it was undrafted rookie Sam Hartman.

Check it out via Dan Leberfeld of Jets Confidential Magazine:

Were these Jets fans just fans of Hartman? He has his fan club of admirers. Or, perhaps they were Notre Dame fans. Hartman played his final season at Notre Dame.

As Leberfeld stated, no more popular No. 3 or No. 4 quarterback in the NFL exists. The Commanders should start selling Hartman merchandise.

Watch: Jayden Daniels trolls former Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman on his birthday

Happy birthday Sam!

First off, we want to wish former Notre Dame quarterback [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag] a happy birthday.

What we didn’t expect was his Washington Commander teammate [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] gave him a hard time about it. In a video shared on the team’s social media page, the 1st-round pick trolled Hartman about his age, saying he it was his 30th birthday.

It’s a funny moment by the two, as you know that Daniels was just messing around with his fellow rookie teammate. Although both of them are new to the organization, it is expected that the LSU product will take over the starting spot once the season commences.

Hartman has options at the professional level if things don’t go right with the Commanders. He was selected by the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL earlier this month.

As of right now, he’s an NFL quarterback, who is celebrating his 25th, not 30th, birthday.

LOOK: Photos from Day 3 of Commanders’ training camp

We look at some of the best photos from Day 3 of Commanders’s training camp.

The Washington Commanders were on the field for Day 3 of training camp in Ashburn on Friday. Friday’s practice was similar to the previous two, with some 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

Quarterbacks Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota split first-team reps, with Daniels looking much better for the third consecutive day. While Daniels shined again, fellow rookie Sam Hartman had the play of the day, connecting with wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus for a long gain down the sideline.

Here’s the play.

A terrific throw from Hartman.

After three straight practices, the Commanders have Saturday off before returning on Sunday, when fans can attend practice for the first time.

But before we look ahead to Sunday, let’s take a look at some of the best photos from Day 3 of Commanders’ training camp.

WATCH: Commanders rookie QB Jayden Daniels in action at training camp

Jayden Daniels in action on the first day of training camp.

Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels reported for training camp last week. On Wednesday, Daniels was on the field with his teammates for his first official training camp practice.

Courtesy of NBC 4 in Washington, D.C., here is Daniels hitting the practice field for the first day of camp with his friend, fellow quarterback Sam Hartman.

Throughout the spring, coaches, teammates and the media in attendance praised Daniels’ accuracy. Early in camp, that accuracy is on full display.

Head coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media on Wednesday morning and said the focus of the first training camp practice would be the red zone.

From all indications, Daniels is off to a fast start.

There is a lot of excitement surrounding the Commanders this summer, and much of that centers around the rookie quarterback from LSU.

Sam Hartman blows off steam, finally beats Clemson

Hartman blows off some steam.

Former Wake Forest and Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman was one of the best under center during his college career. Still, that talent couldn’t help him take down the Tigers.

Hartman went 0-4 against the Tigers during his Wake Forest career. Some games were close, while others, like 2018’s 63-3, were not. Hartman couldn’t get it done against Clemson in the ACC with the Demon Deacons, but he did get another opportunity at a different school.

Transferring to Notre Dame for his fifth year, Hartman and the Fighting Irish had high expectations. With one more opportunity to take down the Tigers, Hartman couldn’t get the job done, losing 31-23 on the road. Hartman completed 13-30 passes for 146 yards and two interceptions in the matchup. A rough showing for the star quarterback.

With the release of the new EA Sports College Football 25 game, Hartman saw his opportunity to beat Clemson and took advantage. Let out that steam, Sam. We understand.

Former Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman gets selected in UFL draft

Congrats Sam!

It’s a pipe dream for the [autotag]Birmingham Stallions[/autotag] of the UFL and quarterback [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag].

The former Notre Dame star is currently rostered by the Washington Commanders, but that didn’t stop the back-to-back-to-back champions from selecting him in the 9th round of their draft.

It may seem a bit low considering the talent in the league, and that’s Hartman is currently with an NFL team. However, taking a shot at a player of his caliber in that round makes perfect sense. Most likely players taken that late won’t even make a roster, so drafting a potential big-time prospect is a solid move.

Hartman now has options if it doesn’t work out with the Commanders, he knows he’ll continue to play football.

Commanders QB Sam Hartman selected in the UFL draft

Commanders QB Sam Hartman selected in the UFL draft.

If quarterback Sam Hartman doesn’t make the Washington Commanders’ 53-man roster this summer, he could have a fallback option. The United Football League held its draft on Wednesday, and Hartman’s name was included.

The defending UFL champion Birmingham Stallions selected Hartman in the ninth round. All 10 UFL teams made 10 picks each.

The Stallions went 9-1 last season and defeated the San Antonio Brahmas in the UFL championship game. Quarterback Adrian Martinez completed almost 59% of his passes last season for 1,749 yards, with 15 touchdowns and three interceptions.

In addition to Martinez, the Brahmas also have former NFL third-round pick Matt Corral. The Panthers selected Corral in the 2022 NFL draft and released him ahead of the 2023 season.

While Hartman went undrafted in the 2024 NFL draft, the Commanders gave him a significant signing bonus to sign as an undrafted free agent. Washington selected LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels at No. 2 overall and viewed Hartman as a potential long-term backup.

Hartman spent the first five seasons of his college career at Wake Forest, where he started 45 games before transferring to Notre Dame for his final season. Hartman started all 12 games for the Fighting Irish last season.

Whether Hartman ends up on the Commanders’ roster or not, he should find work in the NFL, even if it’s on a practice squad. However, if he did choose to play in the UFL, Birmingham would hold his rights.

UFL draft sees teams load up on undrafted prospects as NFL training camps start

The UFL Draft featured many undrafted rookies who are heading to NFL training camps

The UFL season just recently ended, with the Birmingham Stallions blanking the San Antonio Brahmas in the championship game on June 16th. On July 17th, the UFL held its draft for players.

The players in the UFL draft pool are those who were eligible for the 2024 NFL Draft but were not selected back in April. Player must be at least three years removed from playing high school football. Effectively, it’s undrafted free agent rookies. The UFL teams will hold exclusive rights to the drafted players, though all players will have an “NFL Out” clause that allows them to sign with the NFL, but only during the NFL regular season.

Seven of the eight players selected in the first round are offensive prospects, led by former Kansas QB Jason Bean. The Memphis Showboats made Bean the No. 1 overall pick.

Many players selected are already on NFL training camp rosters as undrafted rookies, including players like Isaiah Williams, Gabe Hall, Kedon Slovis and Sam Hartman.
