Saint Peter’s guard Doug Edert surprised his teammates and coach with his Kobe Bryant-like celebration

Doug Edert jumped on a table after Saint Peter’s win and everyone missed it.

Every good Cinderella story needs a great character. Someone who wears their heart on their sleeve while being a little weird (in a good way). Someone who brings energy and quality skill to an ongoing all-time sports moment. Someone who brings the underdog story to life.

For No. 15 seed Saint Peter’s — who’s on a men’s NCAA tournament run for the ages — that character has to be Doug Edert.

After their latest shocking tournament win on Friday night, this time in the Sweet 16 over Purdue, Edert couldn’t contain himself. The junior guard simply had to go wild with joy at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. So much so that in the postgame chaos, he jumped on the scorer’s table, and none of his Peacock teammates knew about it.

You did what, Doug?

His coach didn’t seem impressed:

Too funny.

Hey, we’ve all been there, right? You get so worked up, so excited, you almost lose control over any rational thought.

You’re invincible! You’re on top of the world! You’re so happy, you might even forget where you are for a minute!

Edert, we’re right there with you, buddy. And I know your teammates are always in your corner, as much as they’re surprised by what the thrill of the moment can bring out in you.

Saint Peter’s win over Purdue was shown on the jumbotron at Madison Square Garden and the crowd erupted

The Tri-state area is starting to love its beautiful Peacocks.

Saint Peter’s dream season has captured the hearts of college hoops fans everywhere during the Men’s NCAA tournament. In cutting through their quadrant of the bracket, everyone wants a piece of the No. 15 seed Peacocks. For a good reason: How could you ever root against an underdog?

With their win over Purdue in the Sweet 16, the Peacocks (12-point underdogs coming in) have started to gain ground locally. Based in New Jersey, the Tri-state area can not get enough of their beautiful, suddenly soaring birds.

If you don’t believe me, look no further than Madison Square Garden on Friday night. The MSG jumbotron operators showed the 67-64 final score from the Peacocks’ latest upset in the middle of a Rangers-Penguins game.

And the crowd exploded in jubilation.

The majestic Peacocks of Saint Peter’s are on to the Elite Eight. I think it’s safe to say they’ll have the nation’s full attention and the attention of the greater New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area.

St Peter’s guard Matthew Lee found an awesome way to get back on his feet and NCAA fans loved it

It turns out Peacocks actually can fly.

Thus far, Saint Peter’s is the darling of the men’s NCAA tournament. After upsetting Kentucky and Murray State, the beloved Peacocks have become one of this March’s main draws. We can’t get enough of their beautiful feathers. Oh, right, and their Cinderella basketball.

And on Friday night they made history by becoming the first No. 15 seed to make it to the Elite Eight with their stunning win over Purdue that had everyone in awe.

During their Sweet 16Β  win over the No. 3 Boilermakers (who were 12-point favorites coming in), one of the Peacocks players had a different surprise for everyone. After making a drive to the basket early in the second half, Matthew Lee fell to the ground. Rather than get up in a normal-athletically-challenged-person way, he saw fit to bounce up off the court.

And I mean really bounce.

I want to note that it took me 10 minutes to get out of bed this morning. So while I’m amazed by Lee’s nimbleness, I’m also very jealous.

College hoops fans similar could not get enough of this young man getting back on his feet in this mind-boggling way.

Zero perfect brackets remain after the first round of March Madness 2022

Perfection has to wait until next spring.

You know, usually, it takes a little longer for everyone’s brackets to spontaneously self-combust. This writer, for one, who definitely didn’t pick his bracket on an “eeny, meenie, miny, moe” basis, thought that his selections would last longer than the first weekend.

Oh well, you live, and you don’t learn.

Two fateful and exciting days of the 2022 Men’s NCAA tournament are in the books. The beautiful Peacocks of Saint Peter’s humiliated Kentucky. Consensus national title favorite Gonzaga flirted with disaster. And in Pittsburgh, Illinois became the first extremely fortunate team to advance to the next round despite laying a massive egg.

There will always be shocks and bracket busters. But I can’t say it’s a good look at our collective prognosticating ability that zero perfect brackets remain. Anywhere. Not on ESPN. Not on Yahoo. Not on CBS. And not even on the NCAA website proper.

Again, zero perfect brackets. Nada. Zilch. After only 36 total games (including the First Four).

This March was supposed to be different. One of us, one of the millions of us, was supposed to go all the way. Not one got lucky. Instead, we all indeed look like Nick Young right now. Oh well. To next March, it is.

Saint Peter’s downed Kentucky in one of the biggest upsets in March Madness history

We’re in shock as much as you are.

The beauty of March is, as always, the unexpected. It’s the one month of the calendar year where everyone thinks David will beat Goliath, sometimes repeatedly. “Down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier,” might as well be the entire month’s slogan.

The latest iteration of madness during the Men’s NCAA tournament involves the pitfalls of Kentucky (-18). A 2-seed, many had high hopes for John Calipari’s bunch to make a deep run over the next few weeks. At the very least, they should’ve made it through the first weekend of play because 2-seeds don’t lose to 15-seeds. They don’t. The glorious Peacocks of Saint Peter’s were but a speed bump in that journey.

Except on those rare occasions where the great basketball conjunction occurs.

Down goes Calipari! Down goes Calipari! Down goes Calipari!

In the history of the 64-team format, Kentucky’s 85-79 loss to Saint Peter’s is only the 10th time a 15-seed has ever beaten the longest odds. Falling in this fashion is rare and futile company for one of college basketball’s blue bloods, and a moment of incredible glory for the Peacocks.

Of course, beyond the celebratory mood for Saint Peter’s, Tennessee also has to feel vindicated. Many felt the committee snubbed the Volunteers out of a 2-seed in favor of the Wildcats and Duke Blue Devils. As it so happens, Tennessee is already on to the Second Round. And Kentucky has to roost in its unwelcome history forever.
