Former Ohio State star Ryan Shazier placed on Reserve/Retired list by Steelers

Former Ohio State and Pittsburg Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier has been placed on the Reserve/Retired list by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Former Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier has been placed on the reserve/retired list by the Pittsburgh Steelers. It could signal the end of his professional football playing career.

The news came directly from the Steelers, and based on the release, it appears there may be room to still be a part of the organization.

“Ryan’s placement on the Reserve/Retired List serves as a matter of protocol to ensure his continued inclusion within our organization moving forward in his professional career,” said Steelers General Manager/Vice President Kevin Colbert in the release.

Shazier’s story has been an inspiring one. He suffered a severe spinal cord injury against the Cincinnati Bengals back on December 4, 2017. He spent the last two seasons on the team’s Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list.

Shazier was originally selected by the Steeers in the first round of the 2104 NFL Draft and made the Pro Bowl after the 2016 season. Let’s hope Shazier is still a big part of professional football and that his story continues to inspire and motivate many.

Steelers place LB Ryan Shazier on Reserve/Retired list

The Steelers have made a procedural decision about Ryan Shazier.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Tuesday they are placing linebacker Ryan Shazier on the Reserve/Retired list. This doesn’t mean Shazier is no longer part of the Steelers organization but it does mean he has contacted the commissioner’s office to make it known he intends to retire. Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert made it clear this was just protocol and Shazier remains part of the organization.

“Ryan’s placement on the Reserve/Retired List serves as a matter of protocol to ensure his continued inclusion within our organization moving forward in his professional career,” Colbert said.

Here is an explanation of the list from Over the Cap.

The retired list is what players are placed upon if they choose to retire rather than honor their contracts. This is more procedural than anything else. The player does not count towards the roster nor do they carry any cap charges as contracts are treated just as if the player was cut for salary cap purposes with prorated bonus money accelerating and being included as “dead money”.  Teams do maintain the rights to players on the retired list. These lists are not included on the site.

Despite the fact this move marks the end of Shazier’s comeback as a player, his recovery has been nothing short of a miracle. The Steelers are a loyal organization and you can be assured Shazier will remain with the team in some capacity.

Steelers planning to stand by Ryan Shazier as he continues to rehab

The Steelers are going to continue to keep Ryan Shazier on the roster.

For the past two years, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Ryan Shazier have had a complicated relationship. Shazier’s injury he suffered in December of 2017 has kept him off the field ever since and everyone continues to wait and see if Shazier will ever be able to play again. But in the meantime, the Steelers plan to keep Shazier around for as long as necessary in some capacity.

Steelers president Art Rooney II spoke to the media last week and was very positive about the scenarios that would keep Shazier back in the fold. “We’re never going to take that away from Ryan,” Colbert said. “We have always told him we’ll never put a ceiling on it.”

Last season, Shazier’s contract did not toll, meaning the team was able to count a reduced amount of his veteran minimum salary against the salary cap. This season, according to Rooney, Shazier’s contract will toll, meaning the full value of a veteran minimum contract — $820,000 — would count against the salary cap.

Rooney also made it seem like Pittsburgh was in no rush to make any big decisions about Shazier’s future until he is ready “When Ryan becomes healthy enough to play this game, which is his goal, we’ll make that decision and he’ll make that decision at that point, and we’ll respect it either way it goes.”

Ryan Shazier could remain with the Steelers in 2020

Steelers president Art Rooney II talked about wanting to keep Ryan Shazier for 2020.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a fairly extensive list of free agents to deal with when the league year starts. One player on the list in a rather unique position is linebacker Ryan Shazier. Shazier has spent his last two seasons attempting to recover from a horrific back injury he suffered at the end of the 2017 season.

Steelers president Art Rooney II talked about Shazier and his future with the team. Rooney said the time will sit down with Shazier and sort out what is best for his future as well as the team.

If we assume Shazier isn’t going to be able to play again, we really hope he remains with the Steelers organization in some capacity. Shazier means too much to the team and the fanbase not to have him there. Whether it’s as an assistant coach or a scout you can bet Pittsburgh will find a way to do right by Shazier.

What should the Steelers do with Ryan Shazier?

Do the Steelers sign Ryan Shazier to another contract?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to have some difficult decisions to make in free agency in the offseason. But none might be more difficult for the team and fans to reconcile than that of linebacker Ryan Shazier.

Shazier has missed the last two seasons as he continues to recover from a horrific back injury. In 2018, the Steelers honored Shazier’s fifth-year option and paid him $8.718 million while he was on IR.

Last season the Steelers signed Shazier to a one-year contract, paying him $473,000. This offseason Pittsburgh will once again have to decide where they stand with Shazier and his potential comeback.

As remarkable as Shazier’s story has been, he and the team will eventually have to decide if Shazier is capable of playing again or do both parties take a different approach. And that is the question we ask today.
