Lions vs Steelers: Studs and Duds for Week 10

After an abysmal showing from the Detroit Lions and the Pittsburgh Steelers ending in a 16-16 tie, here are this week’s studs and duds.

Between the weather and the execution from the teams, it was about as messy and clumsy example of football you’ll ever see in this Week 10 matchup between the Detroit Lions and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game ended everyone’s misery with a 16-16 tie.

Each team had a plethora of opportunities to seal the victory, but each time it was squandered with inept play or boneheaded mistakes that made it a tough watch. For that matter, the Lions play calling seemed to be taken straight out of a high playbook, where it was downright frustrating to muster any energy into the game. This was one of those games where neither team deserved to walk away with a victory.

There were a few moments that gave the Lions some life against the Steelers, but then there were others you could tell were going to be the death to any hopes of a win. That turned out to be the case in this week’s studs and duds.

Lions elevate K Ryan Santoso from the practice squad to kick in Week 10

Lions elevate K Ryan Santoso from the practice squad to kick in Week 10

As is customary for Saturday afternoons, the Detroit Lions made their final tweak to the game roster for Sunday’s matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In a move everyone knew was coming, the Lions elevated kicker Ryan Santoso from the practice squad. Santoso will replace regular kicker Austin Seibert, who was ruled out for Week 10 with an ankle injury, Santoso previously filled in for Seibert in Weeks 3 and 4 when Seibert was on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Lions didn’t make any other moves coming out of the bye.

Lions continue to churn the practice squad, announce protected players

The Lions protected four players and brought back UDFA WR Javon McKinley

The more things change, the more they stay the same for the Detroit Lions and the team’s practice squad. Tuesday’s transactions proved the point.

The four practice players protected for Week 6 are the same that got protected last week, too:

Bruce Hector, DL

Jalen Elliott, S

Steven Montez, QB

Ryan Santoso, K

In addition to preventing those players from being signed off their practice squad, the Lions also brought back rookie WR Javon McKinley. It’s McKinley’s fourth time being signed to the practice squad in six weeks. The team released tight end Jared Pinkney from the practice squad to make room.

Ryan Santoso elevated from practice squad, will be the Lions kicker in Week 4

The Detroit Lions elevated Ryan Santoso from the practice squad to handle the kicking duties in Chicago in Week 4

For the second week in a row, Ryan Santoso will handle the placekicking duties for the Detroit Lions. The team elevated Santoso from the practice squad for Week 4 to handle the kicking duties.

Santoso was elevated as a COVID-19 replacement for regular kicker Austin Seibert, who remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list for the second straight week. The 26-year-old Santoso was perfect on his kicks in his Lions regular season debut in the Week 3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. That includes a 37-yard go-ahead field goal with under a minute to play.

Santoso is the only practice squad player elevated by the Lions this week. New defensive lineman Eric Barnes and DE Jason Cornell, activated off suspension, could also make their first appearances for the Lions.

Lions vs. Ravens: Stock up and stock down following Week 3 loss

Which Lions raised their stocks and which ones fell in Detroit’s loss to the Ravens in Week 3

The Detroit Lions are now 0-3 after another close, hard-fought loss. This one came at home against the Baltimore Ravens, and it took an NFL-record 66-yard field goal as time expired to lift the visitors to victory.

Several Lions had standout performances. Some of them were good, some of them were regrettable.

Here’s the stock report for the Lions after the Week 3 loss to the Ravens.

Lions elevate K Ryan Santoso and shuffle the practice squad roster

The Lions made quite a few special teams moves on the practice squad after elevating Santoso, who can both punt and kick

Ryan Santoso’s wild ride in the 2021 season continues. The Lions elevated Santoso from the team’s practice squad for Sunday’s Week 3 battle with the Baltimore Ravens.

Detroit used the standard elevation for Santoso, who can also serve as a punter. Every team can elevate up to two players from the practice squad each week, though the Lions only elevated Santoso this week.

Santoso was a member of the New York Giants through the first part of the offseason. The Giants traded the third-year pro to Carolina the day before the final preseason game. The Panthers subsequently cut Santoso after Week 1, when he was perfect in Carolina’s win over the Jets.

In Week 2, he was on the Tennessee Titans practice squad and inactive. The Lions snagged him to the Detroit practice squad after the Titans let him go after Week 2. Now he’s up on the active roster for the Lions in Week 3.

In other Lions practice squad movement, the team swapped in two new players and dropped two others.

Coming in:

Long snapper Beau Brinkley

Punter Lachlan Edwards (Lac)

No longer with the team:

Wide receiver Javon McKinley

Tight end Jared Pinkney

Brinkley and Edwards each tried out for the Lions on Friday, along with another long snapper. Brinkley, 31, was the long snapper for the Titans for the last nine seasons. Edwards was the punter for the New York Jets from 2016-2019 and led the NFL in both punts and punting yardage in 2019.

Lions place Tyrell Williams on I.R. among series of roster moves

The Detroit Lions place Tyrell Williams on I.R. among series of roster moves that includes a change at kicker

The Detroit Lions kept the NFL’s transaction wire busy on Thursday with a series of moves.

The most notable move is the Lions placing WR Tyrell Williams on injured reserve with his concussion. Williams suffered his brain injury in Week 1 and has not progressed enough to be able to practice. The team’s top wideout will not be eligible to return until Week 6.

There will also be a change at kicker. Regular Lions PK Austin Seibert was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday. The Lions quickly signed Ryan Santoso from the practice squad to replace Seibert. Santoso signed to Detroit’s practice squad on Wednesday and takes over as the kicker for Week 3 less than a day later.

Williams’ spot on the 53-man roster goes to linebacker Josh Woods, who was signed off the Chicago Bears practice squad. Linebacker Jamie Collins remains with the team for now, though the Lions are actively attempting to trade the veteran.

Lions add K Ryan Santoso to practice squad and protect him for Week 3

Santoso competed for the Lions punting job in 2018

The Detroit Lions added an old friend to the practice squad on Wednesday. The Lions brought in kicker Ryan Santoso to the 16-man practice squad.

Santoso was with the Lions in 2018 as an undrafted rookie and saw work as both a punter and a placekicker. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Santoso has a huge leg and can capably fill in as a practice leg at either spot, though the Lions brought him in specifically as a kicker. He was with the Carolina Panthers earlier this season.

The Lions felt strong enough about Santoso that they chose him as one of the four players on this week’s protected list for the practice squad. Santoso joins S Jalen Elliott, DL Bruce Hector and QB Steven Montez on the protected list, meaning no other team can sign them from the practice squad until after Week 3 ends.

Tennessee Titans had K Riley Patterson in for a visit

Patterson could join the Titans’ kicker queue in the event that Bullock doesn’t work out and Santoso is called upon to take the job.

The Tennessee Titans continue their search for someone — anyone — who can solve their kicker issue after Michael Badgley was the latest to fail at doing so in Week 1.

Before signing kicker Ryan Santoso to the practice squad on Friday, the Titans had fellow kicker Riley Patterson in for a visit on Thursday, per the league’s transactions wire.

Patterson, a former undrafted free agent of the Minnesota Vikings who was waived with an injury settlement in August, played his college ball at Memphis.

In 51 collegiate games, the 6-foot, 190-pound kicker made 77.1 percent of his field goals, including an impressive 92 percent success rate in 2019. He has never attempted a field goal in the NFL, though.

While Patterson wasn’t signed by the Titans, he will likely join the kicker queue in the event that current starter, Randy Bullock, doesn’t work out and Santoso is called upon to replace him.

Bullock will be the latest Titans kickers to try his hand at stabilizing the position when Tennessee meets the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Tennessee Titans sign K Ryan Santoso to practice squad

The Titans’ former kickoff specialist is back!

Get hyped, Tennessee Titans fans: the kickoff master is back!

The Titans announced the signing of kicker Ryan Santoso, who spent time with the team in 2019, serving as a kickoff specialist. Santoso tallied 17 kickoffs over three games that season, achieving a touchback on nine.

Since then, Santoso has bounced around with a few different teams, including with the New York Giants on their practice squad in 2020.

The 26-year-old was traded by Big Blue to the Carolina Panthers before the 2021 season started. He served as the Panthers’ kicker in Week 1, making both of his field goal attempts but just one of two extra point tries.

Carolina went on to release him just a few days later.

Our expectation is that the kickoff master is being brought in for more than that this time around. While Randy Bullock will get the nod in Week 2, Santoso will be waiting in the wings if the almost seemingly inevitable happens and Bullock struggles versus the Seattle Seahawks.

To make room for Santoso, the Titans waived offensive lineman Christian DiLauro.

Of course, the addition of Santoso doesn’t add to the ever-growing list of kickers the Titans have have signed since 2019.

The list remains at 13 who have been signed to the practice squad or active roster the past two-plus seasons. Eight of those 13 either attempted a field goal, extra point and/or kickoff. Bullock is set to be the ninth.
