Potential kickers Chargers could sign in wake of Dustin Hopkins’ injury

Here are a few kickers on the street the Chargers could bring in.

With Dustin Hopkins added to the injury report with a quad injury, the Chargers could potentially be in the band-aid kicker market.

With minor injuries like Hopkins’, teams usually sign a player to their practice squad and use one of that player’s three elevations to avoid using two roster spots on a kicker. Therefore, poaching a kicker from another team’s practice squad is probably not a viable option.

Here are a few kickers on the street Los Angeles could bring in.

Rodrigo Blankenship

Blankenship was cut by the Colts after Week 1 this season and has yet to land a new job despite missing just one kick in Indianapolis’ season opener. Historically, Blankenship is an accurate short-distance kicker: on field goals 39 yards or shorter, he’s missed only twice in his 22-game career. He’s also 52 of 55 on extra points. The problems start from 40 yards and out, where Blankenship is 16 of 23 and just 1 of 4 on kicks 50 or more yards. The former Georgia kicker has also suffered a hip injury that cut his 2021 season to just five games. Hip injuries are often career killers for kickers. But for a team as aggressive on fourth down as the Chargers, an accurate short kicker could be all they need.

Dominik Eberle

Eberle was in the NFL most recently of the names on this list, kicking for the Lions in Week 4. Unfortunately, he missed two extra points and barely snuck his other kicks inside the uprights in a game Detroit only lost by two points. Eberle was cut partially because incumbent kicker Austin Seibert should be back from injury this week, but Detroit added Michael Badgley on Tuesday as insurance rather than sticking with Eberle. Still, the NFL by and large tries out the same cadre of kickers over an entire season, and Eberle has most recently won one of those tryouts. Keep an eye on him as a potential visitor in the coming days.

Ryan Santoso

If your concern is kickoffs, might I recommend the big-legged Santoso, who has the power to drive every kickoff into or out the back of the end zone? Santoso spent most of this preseason in Jacksonville, where special teams coordinator Heath Farwell described his leg strength as “elite.” Despite that, he was released before playing a regular season game with Jacksonville, who opted to add other teams’ cast-offs and hold a brand new competition leading up to Week 1. As a result, Santoso only has seven career games across the 2019 and 2021 seasons under his belt, missing one field goal and two extra points in those opportunities.

Nick Sciba

The most accurate kicker in college football history, I was a bit surprised that Sciba didn’t catch on anywhere else after spending a few months as Chris Boswell’s understudy. Usually, kickers that sign to teams with established starters do so as an internship before landing somewhere else and earning a job. (Think of every Ravens kicker they’ve traded for late-round picks while Justin Tucker has been there.) Sciba never missed an extra point in his Wake Forest career and went 80 of 89 on field goals, but his career-long was 49 yards. Whether that was a Demon Deacon thing or a Nick Sciba thing is a question that’s largely gone unanswered, but the fact that he’s still on the street in Week 5 tells me his leg is probably far from the strongest.

Elliott Fry

Fry is perhaps best known as being the Falcons’ practice squad yo-yo last season, but he’s also spent time on eight other NFL teams as the perpetual 33rd-best kicker in the league. In three career games split between Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Kansas City, Fry is 5 of 6 on field goals and 5 of 7 on extra points. He lost a competition in Jacksonville to Santoso because of a hip injury, which could also explain why he hasn’t been picked up by a new team yet. Fry was also not among the group of kickers Detroit worked out on Tuesday before signing Badgley. That group included Sam Ficken, Lirim Hajrullahu, Brian Johnson, and Andrew Mevis. Perhaps that means Fry is not yet healthy. But if he is, the Chargers giving him his tenth NFL uniform may be in the cards.

Giants release Andrew Adams, sign kicker Ryan Santoso

The New York Giants have terminated the contract of safety Andrew Adams and signed kicker Ryan Santoso, who was previously with the team.

The New York Giants are expected to release safety Andrew Adams, who only recently reunited with the team.

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan was the first to report the news.

Adams entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of UConn, signing with the Giants following the 2016 NFL draft. He spent the first two seasons of his career with Big Blue before stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2018, 2019-2020, 2021), Detroit Lions (2019) and Philadelphia Eagles (2021).

In 87 career games (35 starts), Adams has recorded 190 tackles, four QB hits, two forced fumbles, 23 passes defensed and seven interceptions.

Adams had a strong four-week stint with the team but as Raanan alludes, the team wants to go younger at the position. It also bodes well for Dane Belton’s impending return.

In addition to releasing Adams, the Giants have also waived wide receiver Bailey Gaither with a failed physical designation. They had claimed him off of waivers from the Baltimore Ravens earlier this week.

With two open roster spots, the Giants have signed kicker Ryan Santoso and wide receiver Travis Toivonen, each of whom have previously been with the team.

Santoso is likely a temporary addition as kicker Graham Gano has not yet cleared concussion protocol.

Jaguars waive Ryan Santoso, are currently without a kicker on the roster

The #Jaguars parted ways with their mustachioed kicker after his underwhelming performance vs. #Steelers

Saturday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers was an excellent case study of why the Jacksonville Jaguars will need good play from their special teams unit this season. The one-point game came down to a field goal attempt from beyond 50 yards to deliver the Jaguars their first win of the preseason, but when the kick sailed wide of the goal posts, they were doomed to their third straight loss.

Kicker Ryan Santoso, the guilty party on the missed game-winner, was waived by Jacksonville on Tuesday morning after his two makes on four attempts against Pittsburgh cost the Jaguars the win.

This move leaves a glaring hole on Jacksonville’s roster, as they are currently without a kicker ahead of Saturday’s matchup against the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes Benz Stadium. They are sure to sign someone before the game, though who they might target is unclear at this point.

The Jaguars had previously brought in former Eagles kicker Elliott Fry to compete with Santoso in training camp, but an injury last week resulted in  Fry’s release before the game against the Steelers.

Santoso was a journeyman by any standard, having kicked for five different NFL teams before joining the Jaguars in March. He was part of the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl roster last season and has kicked in the Canadian Football League for the Montreal Alouettes in 2019 and 2020. An undrafted free agent in the 2018 draft class, Santoso played his college ball at the University of Minnesota.

While he may not be wearing the black and teal again this season, Santoso has a shot to catch on with another team before the regular season starts in September. He has managed to find his way on NFL rosters before, so expect his services to be requested at some point in the very near future.

Six Jaguars poised for big performances vs. Steelers

These six players are set to prove that preseason football is anything but boring when the #Jaguars take on the #Steelers on Saturday night.

Though the outcome of this game is inconsequential to the Jacksonville Jaguars’ hopes of redemption in 2022, there are several players who could make their case for a roster spot with big performances against the Steelers. For teams in the middle of a rebuild, expectations are relatively low for anyone under contract who isn’t due a bunch of guaranteed money, and the door to significant playing time can swing wide open at any time.

Here are six Jaguars who are set to make their case for a roster spot against Pittsburgh in Jacksonville’s third preseason game:

Report: Jaguars signing PK Elliott Fry after workout

With the kicking game looking shaky in the first days of camp, the Jags are signing Elliott Fry according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

There have been a lot of positives surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars during the first four days of camp when it comes to the offense and defense. However, when it comes to special teams, specifically the kicking game, things have been rocky at best.

The team currently has a kicking competition going on between veteran Ryan Santoso and undrafted rookie Andrew Mevis, but both have had moments where they’ve looked shaky. That was especially the case on Day 4 for Mevis as he finished the day 1-of-4. Even in Santoso’s case, he missed some kicks in warmups, though he was 4-of-4 in practice.

As a result of what they’ve seen the last few days, the Jags are making a move at the kicker position on Friday. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Jags worked out some kickers and will be signing Elliott Fry from the group.

Fry, 27, will be entering his third season in the league and has spent time with the Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, and Kansas City Chiefs as a regular-season player. After playing in three career games (one with each aforementioned team) he was 5-of-6 (83.3% )on field goal attempts and 5-of-7 (71.5%) on his extra point attempts.

In 2019 Fry also spent time with the Orlando Apollos in the Alliance of American Football. While with the Apollos he was 14-of-14 with his longest coming from 44 yards out.

Before entering the league, Fry played at the University of South Carolina where he is their second all-time leading scorer with 359 points.

The Jags haven’t officially announced the move yet, but if they release one of their two current kickers, it probably would be Mevis. Regardless, with the Jags’ first preseason game coming up on Thursday, Fry has a big opportunity ahead of him.

2022 NFL free agency: Jaguars sign PK Ryan Santoso

The Jags have a new kicker in the building in Ryan Santoso, who is entering his fifth season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars started this week by announcing the return of receiver Laquon Treadwell, but he wasn’t the only addition that the team announced Monday. They also revealed that they added a new placekicker in Ryan Santoso, who is entering his fifth season in the NFL.

Santoso, 26, entered the league in 2018 as an undrafted free agent for the Detroit Lions out of the University of Minnesota. He’s been a journeyman since but has played in seven regular season games. Those games took place with the Lions (three games), Carolina Panthers (one), and Tennessee Titans (three).

Santoso will enter 2022 with an 80% (4-of-5) figure in terms of field goals made and an extra-point success rate of 75% (6-of-8). The lone missed field goal attempt occurred last season when Santoso was playing for the Lions and missed a 48-yarder Week 8 against Pittsburgh. As for the two missed extra points, they occurred last season while he was with the Lions and Panthers.

Last season the Jags released veteran kicker Josh Lambo in October and named Matthew Wright their starting kicker after he kicked a game-winner in London to give the Jags a 23-20 win over the Miami Dolphins, which was their first of the season. He made 21-of-24 field goals and 13-of-15 extra points last season.

Odell Beckham Jr. among ex-Giants to earn a Super Bowl LVI ring

Odell Beckham Jr. is among a handful of ex-New York Giants to earn a Super Bowl LVI ring as members of the Los Angeles Rams.

The Los Angeles Rams are Super Bowl LVI champions after defeating the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20, at SoFi Stadium on Sunday.

The game saw Matthew Stafford & Co. overcome a multitude of injuries to complete a comeback victory, culminating with Cooper Kupp hauling in the game-winning touchdown over ex-New York Giants cornerback Eli Apple.

Speaking of ex-Giants, several will wake up on Monday morning as champions. Here’s a look at which former blue bleeders have a ring coming their way.

Who’s left: Tracking former Lions still playing in the postseason

Who’s left: Tracking former Detroit Lions still playing in the AFC and NFC championship round

The NFL is down to its final four. After an incredible divisional round, the championship games for the AFC and NFC will have a hard time matching the action. But several former Detroit Lions will try and help their new teams advance to the Super Bowl.

There are several former Lions still alive in the postseason. One is far more prominent than all the others combined, of course, but each team has at least a little Detroit flavor on the roster.

Lions sign K Riley Patterson from Patriots practice squad

Patterson is an undrafted rookie from Memphis

There is a new kicker in town. The Detroit Lions have signed placekicker Riley Patterson from the New England Patriots practice quad onto the active 53-man roster. The news was first reported by Mike Reiss of ESPN.

Patterson will replace Ryan Santoso, who cost the Lions a win with a missed extra point and an ugly overtime field goal effort that was well off the mark in the Week 10 tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Santoso was elevated from the practice squad for the weekend to replace injured Austin Seibert.

Because the Lions placed Seibert on IR on Saturday, they do have an open roster spot to add Patterson. The new kicker is an undrafted rookie from Memphis who has been with the Patriots since October. He initially signed with the Minnesota Vikings but was waived with injury status during the summer.

Lions will bring in kicking competition for Ryan Santoso following Week 10 debacle

Santoso was the fifth kicker the Lions have tried since Matt Prater left in free agency after the 2020 season

Ryan Santoso’s run as the placekicker for the Detroit Lions is on thinner ice than is forming on the fringes of Lake St. Clair. After missing an extra point and a potential game-winning field goal in the Week 10 tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’s not an unexpected development.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked about the status of the kicker situation during his press conference on Monday.

We’re going to bring some guys in, work them out, just see who the best man for the job is,” Campbell said.

He was then asked if the weather or unacceptable (by NFL standards) field conditions in Heinz Field were culpable in Santoso’s terrible miss. His 47-yard field goal attempt in overtime was several yards short and wide right.

“No, the procedure was good. The snap and hold was good on both,” Campbell stated. “Nope. They did a good job with the procedure.”

Santoso was elevated from the practice squad late in the week after Austin Seibert went on injured reserve with an ankle injury suffered in practice. If (when) Santoso gets replaced, the new kicker will be the third the Lions have used in the regular season and the fifth since Matt Prater departed in free agency.
