Saints upgrade three starters on Week 12 injury report vs. Falcons

Saints upgrade two starters on Week 12 injury report vs. Falcons

Here’s some good news: the New Orleans Saints upgraded three starters on their Week 12 injury report, suggesting quarterback Derek Carr and left guard James Hurst will play against the Atlanta Falcons, as will right tackle Ryan Ramczyk.

Carr cleared concussion protocol and was a full participation at practice after receiving treatment earlier in the week. Hurst missed practice on Wednesday dealing with an illness but returned to a full day of reps on Thursday. Ramczyk, who had been out with his usual veteran’s rest day, practiced on a limited basis. Rookie defensive end Isaiah Foskey (quad) was also limited.

Just two Saints players were not participating on Wednesday and Thursday: starting cornerback Marshon Lattimore and rookie running back Kendre Miller, both managing ankle injuries.

Saints and Falcons list 13 combined players on first Week 12 injury report

The Saints and Falcons listed 13 combined players on the first Week 12 injury report, including Atlanta’s Pro Bowl kicker Younghoe Koo:

And we’re off. The New Orleans Saints returned from their bye week and listed seven players on the first injury report ahead of Week 12’s game with the Atlanta Falcons — who had six of their own receiving treatment at Wednesday’s practice session.

Most notably for Atlanta: former Pro Bowl kicker Younghoe Koo, who didn’t practice while managing a back injury. He’s been a legitimate difference-maker for the Falcons in recent years and any ailment throwing him off his game could be big for New Orleans.

As for the Saints: right tackle Ryan Ramczyk and tight end Jimmy Graham were absent on their usual Wednesday rest days, while quarterback Derek Carr practiced fully (though he’s still in concussion protocol). Cornerback Marshon Lattimore, offensive lineman James Hurst, and running back Kendre Miller were all non-participants, though defensive end Isaiah Foskey was limited.

Saints’ best offensive players through Week 10, per PFF

They haven’t performed well enough as a unit but the New Orleans Saints offense doesn’t lack for talent. Here are the top 10 PFF player grades:

They haven’t performed well enough as a unit, but the New Orleans Saints offense doesn’t lack for talent. Some individual players are leaving it all out on the field to try and pick up first downs, move the chains, and score touchdowns.

And those individual efforts should be recognized. The latest round of Pro Football Focus player grades through Week 10 highlight peak performers on offense:

Just two Saints players miss practice on first injury report vs. Bears

Just two Saints players missed practice on the first injury report for Week 9’s game against the Bears:

The New Orleans Saints listed a lot of players on their first Week 9 injury report, but just two of them didn’t practice on Wednesday: linebacker Ty Summers (concussion/hamstring) and wide receiver Lynn Bowden Jr. (illness). Everyone else was able to participate in at least a limited capacity ahead of Sunday’s game with the Chicago Bears.

Including Michael Thomas (rest/illness), who is still feeling the effects of a virus that has made its way through the facility over the last week. Thomas practiced on limited reps along with offensive linemen James Hurst (ankle), Andrus Peat (ankle), and Ryan Ramczyk, who was given his usual veteran rest day along with tight end Jimmy Graham. Quarterback Taysom Hill (hip) and linebacker Demario Davis (knee) were both limited as well, though free safety Marcus Maye (illness) practiced fully while receiving treatment.

Injuries impact the biggest storylines ahead of Saints vs. Jaguars

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence will play through a knee issue while the Saints are down three offensive linemen. Injuries dictate the biggest storylines this week:

The New Orleans Saints face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night and both teams are dealing with significant injuries. Each storyline revolves around health. The first storyline is how limited will Trevor Lawrence be with a knee injury?

On one hand, the injury will limit Lawrence’s mobility. On the other, that likely means they’ll try to get the ball out quickly, which would negate the Saints pass rush. Carl Granderson has had a really good year and should be a big part of attacking Lawrence. Regardless the Jaguars’ star quarterback is injured, and it’s imperative the Saints take advantage of that.

The other storyline is the health of the Saints offensive line. James Hurst and Ryan Ramczyk are down with injury and so is Ramczyk’s backup, Landon Young. That leaves Cam Erving to start at right tackle, Max Garcia at left guard and Andrus Peat at left tackle this week. That’s a practice squad call up, third string left guard and your backup left guard playing left tackle. Yikes! It’s hard to see the offensive line performing well under those circumstances, but they don’t have a choice but to try.

Saints’ projected offensive line vs. Jaguars looks like a recipe for disaster

ESPN reports the Saints plan for Cam Erving to make his first start at right tackle since 2016, with Andrus Peat moving back to left tackle against the Jaguars:

Yikes. The projected New Orleans Saints offensive line for Week 7’s game with the Jacksonville Jaguars looks like a recipe for disaster. With starting offensive tackles Ryan Ramczyk and James Hurst ruled out with injuries (as well as their top backup Landon Young), ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that the Saints are planning to start Andrus Peat at left tackle while bringing up Cam Erving from the practice squad to play on the right side.

It’s a baffling decision. Erving has not played right tackle since 2016, his second year in the NFL; the Saints traded up for Nick Saldiveri in this year’s draft, and on paper he looks like a much better candidate for this job. He logged more than 2,200 snaps at right tackle in college at Old Dominion during his 38-game career. The Saints coaching staff has tried to convert him to left guard instead of playing him at his natural position.

And Peat hasn’t lined up at left tackle since 2019, when he played a grand total of 6 snaps. He hasn’t spent extensive time at that position since the 2017 season. There’s little reason to believe he’ll be an upgrade over Trevor Penning at the left tackle spot given his past struggles and limited success after moving to guard, but the Saints are determined to keep Penning on the bench.

Here’s the projected starting lineup and their backups for Thursday night’s game with Jacksonville:

  • Left tackle: Andrus Peat (Trevor Penning)
  • Left guard: Max Garcia (Nick Saldiveri)
  • Center: Erik McCoy (Garcia)
  • Right guard: Cesar Ruiz (Garcia/Saldiveri)
  • Right tackle: Cam Erving (Ruiz)

The Saints could also bring up Tommy Kraemer (who has some right tackle experience) or Mark Evans II (a college left tackle the team moved to guard) from the practice squad to add further depth, but we don’t know whether they’ll be available Thursday night. The Saints are making some bold decisions here. We’ll see how that works out against a talented Jaguars defensive front.

Saints offensive line decimated by injuries going into Week 7

Starting right tackle Ryan Ramcyzk and his backup Landon Young are both out against the Jaguars. So is James Hurst. The Saints offensive line is in shambles:

The New Orleans Saints offensive line has been decimated by injury ahead of Thursday night’s game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars. The final injury report announced that right tackle Ryan Ramcyzk, swing tackle Landon Young, and left guard/tackle James Hurst are all out of Thursday’s game. A bit of good news is that Andrus Peat will return, and he was a starter in this offense for years.

The most difficult hole to fill will be the right tackle spot. Ramcyzk is your starter and is usually replaced by Young. Both players are out with an injury. Things got so bad last week that right Hurd Cesar Ruiz moved over to right tackle.

On Thursday night your offensive line could consist of Erik McCoy as your only true starter. Trevor Penning was benched last week but will be forced back into the lineup. Peat was benched before the season and has had to return. If Ruiz stays at tackle for a game, he’ll be playing out of position with veteran backup Max Garcia potentially replacing him. Practice squad guard Tommy Kraemer filled in for Ramczyk when the Saints pulled their starters a few weeks ago, but it’s possible rookie draft pick Nick Saldiveri starts at right tackle. That’s where he played in college at Old Dominion though the Saints have been training him at left guard since drafting him. Either way, an already-suspect Saints offensive line is going to be running thin against a talented Jaguars front.

Saints rule out 5 players ahead of TNF game vs. Jaguars

The New Orleans Saints rule 5 players out ahead of their Thursday Night Football game vs. the Jaguars. Demario Davis is a game time decision

Andrus Peat, Derek Carr, Chris Olave and Cam Jordan no longer have injury designations and will be a full go in this week’s game. Dennis Allen announced Demario Davis who didn’t participate in practice will be a game time decision. Despite being a full participant in practice, Jaguars defensive tackle Davon Hamilton is out of this week’s game.

Saints right tackle Ryan Ramczyk (concussion) exits late vs. Texans

Saints right tackle Ryan Ramczyk (concussion) exits late vs. Texans, forcing further offensive line shuffling

The hits kept coming for the New Orleans Saints offensive line, with right tackle Ryan Ramczyk exiting late against the Houston Texans after entering concussion protocol. That move forced further offensive line shuffling with right guard Cesar Ruiz kicking outside to tackle and rookie draft pick Nick Saldiveri slotting in at the guard spot.

It’s an odd choice — Saldiveri played right tackle throughout his college career, but the Saints have tried to convert him to guard. Either way, this is troubling for the near future. The Saints must play again on Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Ramczyk may be a long shot to return from concussion protocol in time for kickoff. It’s something to watch carefully on the injury report this week.

Underperforming Saints offensive line has more tough sledding ahead of them

The New Orleans Saints offensive line has struggled this year, and they have more tough sledding ahead in the next two weeks | @southexclusives

The struggles of the New Orleans Saints offensive line has been the biggest storyline of the team’s season. The opposing defensive line has won the battle in the running and passing game, and it’s been the biggest impediment to the Saints offense. New Orleans has allowed a dozen sacks in just three games. The complaints about the line only grew after Derek Carr’s injury.

Unfortunately, the Saints won’t get a reprieve from in the near future. Their next two games feature more difficult tests for the struggling unit. This Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers come to town. They have 9 sacks on the season with trench players like Shaquil Barret and Vita Vea who can wreck the game on any play.

The following week the Saints travel to face New England Patriots defensive end Matthew Judon. Judon currently has the fourth-most sacks in the league and he lines up on both sides of the formation, so both Trevor Penning and Ryan Ramczyk are going to be tested.

Both games provide their challenges. It’ll be on the Saints offensive line to improve as they stare down two difficult challenges with a backup quarterback behind them. Highly-paid veterans like Ramczyk and center Erik McCoy can’t continue to be liabilities when they’re expected to be cornerstones.
