Bobby Petrino’s four-year reign at Arkansas involved coaching the great QB Ryan Mallett, who tragically passed away at 35 on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Tragedy struck the college football world as former Arkansas quarterback and recent head football coach at White Hall High School in southeast Arkansas Ryan Mallett passed away after what was described as an accidental drowning while vacationing in Destin, Florida. He was just 35 years of age.

Mallett, who graced the CFB landscape as one of the preeminent star signal callers, played for the Arkansas Razorbacks from 2009 to 2011. In two full seasons after redshirting during the 2009 season, Mallett threw for 7,493 yards and 62 passing touchdowns while setting a single-season passing yards (3,869) and touchdowns (32) in the 2010 season. As the 74th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Mallett last six seasons as a backup before pursuing a career in coaching.

After his sudden passing, former Arkansas teammates, along with nearly every football media member in the country, posted their tributes, which of course, included current Texas A&M offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, who from 2008-2011 was the head coach of the Razorbacks, helping develop Mallett into one of the greatest college quarterbacks we had to the pleasure of watching for two exciting seasons. On Tuesday night, Petrino posted a heartfelt goodbye, honoring the man that helped put Arkansas back on the map, leaving a lasting impression on the program.

“I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of one of the greatest competitors I’ve had the privilege of coaching. Not only was Ryan a great leader and teammate on the field, he was a thoughtful and generous person off the field as well.

Personally, I know how much he loved being a hog. I along with thousands of others will always remember 4th and 3 in Little Rock against LSU when he made the perfect pass to Joe to seal the win!

My heart goes out to his family and to all of Hog nation tonight. Gone but never forgotten. May you rest in peace buddy. Love you!”

Former New England Patriots players have been reacting to the tragic passing of former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett on Tuesday.

Mallett, 35, drowned while swimming at a beach in Florida, according to multiple reports.

“It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Coach Ryan Mallett,” a statement read from the White Hall School District, where Mallett coached high school football. “Coach Mallett was a beloved coach and educator. We ask that you remember his family, team, students, fellow coaches, and the White Hall School District staff in your prayers.”

Mallett was selected by New England in the third-round of the 2011 NFL draft, and he spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons there as Brady’s primary backup. He also spent four years total playing with the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens.

Former NFL player, high school coach Ryan Mallett dies in drowning

Ryan Mallett, head coach of White Hall High School football and former NFL player, died in a drowning, according to reports.

Former NFL quarterback and White Hall High School (Ark.) football head coach Ryan Mallett passed away after drowning in a rip current, according to local news outlet Deltaplex News.

The outlet reported that nine to 12 people were caught in the rip current. Mallett was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. All others survived.

The Okaloosa Sheriff Department posted a tweet confirming that a tourist died offshore of Gulf Short Drive in Destin:

“A tourist died in an apparent drowning offshore of Gulf Shore Drive in Destin. A group of individuals were reportedly truggling offshore when a man went under. He was not breathing when lifeguards found and pulled him out. Tragically lifesaving measures weren’t successful.”

Mallett rose to national prominence at Arkansas, where as a sophomore and junior he combined for 7,493 passing yards and 62 touchdowns to 19 interceptions. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. From 2012-17, he played for the Patriots, Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens, appearing in 21 games and starting eight over his NFL career.

Mallett spent two years teaching at Mountain Home High School (Ark.), where he also served as the defensive coordinator, before transitioning to White Hall ahead of the 2022 season for the head coaching job, according to Arkansas Online. The Bulldogs’ school website said that over his three years as an educator, Mallett taught sociology, history, physical education and health.

Many people and teams who had come in touch with Mallet tweeted expressing condolences to the family and community.

Former Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett drowned Tuesday while vacationing in Florida.

According to Otis Kirk from Pig Trail Nation, White Hall superintendent Gary Williams confirmed that Mallett had passed away.

“It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Coach Ryan Mallett,” the statement read. “Coach Mallett was a beloved coach and educator. We ask that you remember his family, team, students, fellow coaches, and the White Hall School District staff in your prayers.”

The former five-star recruit from Texarkana Texas High School initially went to Michigan before transferring to Arkansas for the 2009-10 campaigns.

Mallett was the head football coach at White Hall High School at the time of his death.

The New England Patriots picked Mallett in Round 3 of the 2011 NFL draft. The Patriots traded Mallett at the end of preseason to the Texans for a conditional sixth-round pick. Over the next two seasons, Mallett went 2-4 with a 5-6 touchdown to interception ratio and a 65.0 passer rating.

Mallett was part of one of the memorable highlights in J.J. Watt’s career. On Nov. 16, 2014, at the Cleveland Browns, Mallett threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Watt to take a 7-0 lead with 7:09 to go in the first quarter. Houston would go on to beat the Browns 23-7 at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Despite having familiarity with Bill O’Brien, who was his offensive coordinator with New England, Mallett was released midway through the 2015 season. The 6-7, 250-pound signal caller played with the Baltimore Ravens from 2015-17.

Mallett began coaching at White Hall in 2020 as an assistant coach, and became head football coach in 2022. According to MaxPreps, the Bulldogs went 4-6 in Mallett’s lone season with a 3-5 record in conference play.

That much was evident Tuesday night in the hours after the public learned of the former Arkansas quarterback’s death. Mallett drowned while in Florida this week. He was 35.

Mallett played at Arkansas in 2009 and 2010 and is the school’s single-season leader in passing touchdowns and yards passing. He’s second on both lists all-time for the Razorbacks.

Tributes and condolences poured in across Twitter. They came from fans who only saw him play from the cheap seats. They came from journalists who covered him up-close. They came from people with whom he went to college. They came from teammates.

They came from people who loved him.

Former New England Patriots quarterback Ryan Mallett drowned on Tuesday while swimming in Florida, per multiple reports. He was 35.

The news was confirmed through the White Hall School District, where Mallett coached high school football, in a released statement.

“It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Coach Ryan Mallett,” the statement read. “Coach Mallett was a beloved coach and educator. We ask that you remember his family, team, students, fellow coaches, and the White Hall School District staff in your prayers.”

Mallett was a third-round pick for the Patriots in the 2011 NFL draft. In 2012 and 2013, Mallett served as the primary backup for Tom Brady. He also played a total of four seasons with the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens.

Coach Bill Belichick put out a statement regarding Mallett’s tragic passing.

“I am extremely saddened by Ryan’s tragic passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and the many people whose lives he touched,” Belichick’s statement read.

There are no doubt many lives that were touched by Mallett, who clearly made a major impact both on and off the football field.

The NFL is mourning the loss of former Patriots, Ravens and Texans QB Ryan Mallett, who drowned at the age of 35.

Ryan Mallett, who played in the NFL for the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens, died in a drowning accident Tuesday near  Destin, Fl.

“It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Coach Ryan Mallett,” White Hall School District said in a statement. “Coach Mallett was a beloved coach and educator. We ask that you remember his family, team, students, fellow coaches, and the White Hall School District staff in your prayers.”

The Patriots offered their condolences to the family of the 35-year-old. who was head coach at the high school in Arkansas.

Mallett was drafted by the Patriots out of Arkansas in 2012. He played with New England for one season, then on to Houston and Baltimore.

He threw for 1,835 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Mallett was named head coach at White Hall in 2022.

“I always knew I was going to coach,” Mallett said after he was named the coach at White Hall, according to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. “It’s just natural for me. I understand it. I get how everything works, and then I just love football. You get to teach kids the right way at a young age, and that’s something I really enjoy.”

Mallett, 35, played for the Razorbacks from 2009 to 2010 before turning professional. He holds Arkansas’ school record for single-season passing yards (3,869) and touchdowns (32) and is second in school history for a career in both categories.

At the time of his death, Mallett was the head coach at White Hall High School in southeast Arkansas and was heading into his second season. He transferred to Arkansas from Michigan after one season.

Mallett was transported from a beach to a Florida hospital where he was pronounced dead, per Matheson.
