Former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, 35, drowned in Florida

Mallett led Arkansas during two of its most successful years this century. He was 35.

Former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett drowned this week in Florida, according to a report by Luke Matheson at Deltaplexnews.com.

Mallett, 35, played for the Razorbacks from 2009 to 2010 before turning professional. He holds Arkansas’ school record for single-season passing yards (3,869) and touchdowns (32) and is second in school history for a career in both categories.

At the time of his death, Mallett was the head coach at White Hall High School in southeast Arkansas and was heading into his second season. He transferred to Arkansas from Michigan after one season.

Mallett was transported from a beach to a Florida hospital where he was pronounced dead, per Matheson.

USA TODAY Sports followed up with additional information regarding the circumstances of his tragic death.

“A tourist died in an apparent drowning offshore of Gulf Shore Drive in Destin. A group of individuals were reportedly struggling offshore when a man went under,” the Okaloosa Co. Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “He was not breathing when lifeguards found and pulled him out. Tragically lifesaving measures weren’t successful.”

“It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Coach Ryan Mallett. Coach Mallett was a beloved coach and educator,” the White Hall School District said in a statement. “We ask that you remember his family, team, students, fellow coaches, and the White Hall School District staff in your prayers.”

Mallett last played six seasons in the NFL before retiring to become a coach. He was 35.
