Seahawks request interview with Lions assistant for OC job

According to a report by Albert Breer at Sports Illustrated, the Seahawks have requested an interview with Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand for their open offensive coordinator position.

With Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson staying in Detroit, teams that are looking for young offensive minds might try poaching assistants close to him to try to get some of those Ben Johnson vibes for themselves. The Seahawks are at least considering one.

According to a report by Albert Breer at Sports Illustrated, the Seahawks have requested an interview with Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand for their open offensive coordinator position.

Engstrand got his start coaching as part of Jim Harbaugh’s staff at San Diego, eventually moving his way up to assistant head coach. Later, he spent one year with Harbaugh in Michigan then one year in the UFL. He has been with Detroit since the 2021 season.

The Seahawks are also reportedly considering Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb for their OC position. He just spent a couple years in Washington calling plays for Kalen DeBoer and a top-notch Huskies offense.

REPORT: Alabama OC Ryan Grubb being targeted by the Seattle Seahawks

Could Kalen DeBoer already be losing a key assistant?

Ryan Grubb hasn’t even officially been introduced as the new Alabama football offensive coordinator but it is already being reported that he has become a target of the Seattle Seahawks to fill its open offensive coordinator vacancy.

On Thursday afternoon, Pro Football Talk reported that Grubb emerged as a potential candidate to join new Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald in Seattle.

Grubb has a long history with new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer and it will likely take a strong effort from the Seahawks to pull him back to the state of Washington.

Grubb, 47 is widely regarded as one of the best offensive minds in college football and would be a big loss for DeBoer and Alabama.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor the situation with Coach Grubb and provide updates as they become available.

Seahawks considering Ryan Grubb for offensive coordinator

Seahawks considering Ryan Grubb for offensive coordinator

The Seahawks have their new head coach. Now it’s time for Mike Macdonald to fill out the rest of his staff for the 2024 season.

The most important hire that Macdonald will make in the coming days is offensive coordinator. On that note we may already have a candidate.

According to 247Sports, Seattle is considering Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb for their own OC position.

Grubb actually just left the Seattle area, following former Huskies head coach Kaelin DeBoer over to Alabama when he replaced Nick Saban as their head coach. DeBoer has gotten much of the hype and credit, but Grubb was calling plays and Washington had one of the top offenses in the nation this year. For the conspiracy-minded, hiring Grubb could be an indication of interest in drafting quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who’s coming off two magnificent seasons at Washington.

In related news, at least one defensive coordinator candidate is off the table for Macdonald. Former Baltimore linebacker Zachary Orr is sticking with the Ravens, replacing Macdonald as their defensive coordinator.

Cleveland Browns expected to hire former Alabama OC Tommy Rees

With major coaching changes, Tommy Rees will no longer be the Alabama OC. Now, he’s working toward a deal with the Cleveland Browns.

When Nick Saban retired, it set off a chain of events that resulted in significant roster changes and moves within the coaching staff. A significant difference is in the offensive coordinator position. Tommy Rees is out of Tuscaloosa and is now expected to be hired by the Cleveland Browns.

The news, being first reported by The Athletic’s Zac Jackson, is that Rees is expected to be hired as Cleveland’s new tight ends coach and play a role in the offense’s passing game. A contract and title, however, have not yet been made official as they are reportedly still working toward a deal.

Rees only spent one season with the Crimson Tide, having been hired off of Notre Dame‘s coaching staff, where he also served as the Fighting Irish’s offensive play-caller. It was an interesting move, as Rees is only 31 years old and had played quarterback at Notre Dame.

New Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer chose to bring with him Ryan Grubb, who was Washington’s offensive coordinator under DeBoer.

Just recently, Rees had reportedly interviewed for the Crimson Tide head coaching job and was considered to be a “wild card candidate” for the position.

Washington OC Ryan Grubb won’t be head coach of the Huskies, in play at Alabama

Grubb to Alabama looks increasingly likely, but it seems clear he won’t be the head coach in Seattle.

One year ago, there were rumors of a possible link between Ryan Grubb and Alabama. However, Nick Saban — in what would turn out to be his final season as the Crimson Tide’s head coach — pivoted to Tommy Rees.

Now, it looks increasingly likely that Grubb, who was Washington’s offensive coordinator this past season, will join Kalen DeBoer in Tuscaloosa. What is certain at this point is that Grubb will not be promoted to head coach at Washington. The Huskies are looking elsewhere for their head coach.

Grubb is a talented play-caller. His ballsy 4th-and-1 call against Washington State in the Apple Cup set up the game-winning field goal and preserved the Huskies’ unbeaten season. Grubb smoked Texas in the Sugar Bowl playoff semifinal before Michigan shut down U-Dub in the national championship game.

Grubb probably needs a Group of Five job or a lower-tier Power Five job before he is head coach at a program of Washington’s stature. This move makes sense for everyone involved.

5 offensive coordinators the Oklahoma Sooners should consider to replace Jeff Lebby

5 offensive coordinator the Oklahoma Sooners could target to replace Jeff Lebby.

Mississippi State has hired Jeff Lebby to be their next head coach, leaving Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator position vacant. The Sooners have now begun the task of replacing Lebby, who helped Oklahoma’s offense finish No. 3 in the nation in scoring and No. 4 in total yards.

Offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners is a position that will be incredibly attractive to a number of coaches across college football.

Here are five names we think the Sooners should consider.

Notre Dame football: 9 potential candidates to replace Tommy Rees

Who do you want to replace Tommy Rees?

Just a year after declaring he wanted to stay and fight for Notre Dame, offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] is off to Tuscaloosa to join Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama. Rees took over as Notre Dame’s play-caller in 2020 and showed signs of stardom. He also made a few decisions that left Notre Dame fans rather frustrated.

The new offensive coordinator will be tasked with some difficult things.  Notably, Rees raised the level of talent in the quarterback room significantly.  When you look at what Notre Dame had at the position on their roster from 2017-2022 and look at the projected depth charts in coming years you can’t help seeing a significant step in the right direction.

But who will replace Rees?

This will be a massive test for Marcus Freeman early in his head coaching career because the hiring of quality assistants is a must for any sustained success. Here are nine names he would be wise to at least look at to replace Rees.

Washington Huskies OC Ryan Grubb will not join Alabama staff after meeting with Nick Saban

Alabama OC search will continue after UW OC decides to stay put

Alabama Crimson Tide fans have been patiently waiting to see who head coach Nick Saban will bring in as his offensive and defensive coordinators for the 2023 season. Unfortunately, that answer will not be coming today.

Washington Huskies offensive coordinator, Ryan Grubb, emerged as a top target for Saban and his staff late last week. Grubb was an offensive coordinator for the first time in 2022 and was a key part of the Huskies’ 11-2 season.

However, after meeting with coach Saban in Tuscaloosa on Monday, Grubb will remain with the Huskies in 2022 and the Tide’s search will continue.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football and the program’s search for both offensive and defensive coordinators.
