Jets request interview with Vikings front office member for GM job

The New York Jets requested an interview with a current Vikings executive who has spent time as a general manager in the past.

The New York Jets enter the 2025 off-season in need of a new general manager and head coach. One candidate for the GM job is currently employed with the Minnesota Vikings.

According to Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports, the Jets have requested to interview Vikings senior vice president of player personnel Ryan Grigson.

Grigson has been working in NFL front offices since 1999. His most notable time was spent with the Indianapolis Colts from 2012-16, when he served as the team’s general manager. They improved from 1-15 in 2011 to 11-5 and the first of three straight playoff appearances in 2012.

When Kwesi Adofo-Mensah became the Vikings’ general manager in 2022, he hired Grigson to help build the team. Adofo-Mensah had a background in economics before joining the NFL in 2013. Grigson had experience playing in college before he began working his way up from a team scout to general manager. His football acumen helped complement Adofo-Mensah’s analytical approach.

The Jets enter a pivotal off-season. They fired head coach Robert Saleh on Oct. 8 following a 23-17 loss to the Vikings. When things didn’t improve, they fired GM Joe Douglas on Nov. 19. They will interview several other candidates to fill the opening, but not many will have more experience than Grigson.

Vikings executive gets mentioned as potential NFL GM candidate

According to Albert Breer, there is a Vikings front office, though there is an emerging candidate for expected general manager spots.

The first Monday of the NFL offseason is always tough for so many in the NFL as teams begin to change their coaching staff and front office staffs. The Minnesota Vikings are expected to have teams request for interviews with defensive coordinator Brian Flores, and the Jets have already requested one.

According to Albert Breer, there is a Vikings front office, though there is an emerging candidate for expected general manager spots. Breer expects the New York Jets to be looking for retreads, former general managers who are looking for a second chance.

Just so happens the Vikings have one in Ryan Grigson who was general manager for the Colts from 2012 to 2016. He is currently listed as the Senior Vice President of Player Personnel for the Vikings.

Breer writes, “Ryan Grigson, another ex-GM who built playoff teams, deserves another look with his time in Indianapolis now having more context, and the success he’s had as the No. 2 to Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in building this year’s Minnesota Vikings.”

Regardless of how this season ends for the Vikings, the team is going to be having changes on and off the field. If Grigson is requested for any interviews, we will be sure to pass those along here at Vikings Wire.

Vikings front office member expected to interview for GM openings

With the Minnesota Vikings having a better than expected season in 2024, could Ryan Grigson be a GM candidate for the New York Jets in 2025?

There are still several weeks of the NFL season left to play, but the NFL’s coaching carousel has already begun. The New York Jets kicked off this year’s cycle by firing their head coach Robert Saleh in early October. The Las Vegas Raiders were next to make moves, clearing out several coordinators but keeping head coach Antonio Pierce — for now.

The Saints followed up by firing head coach Dennis Allen in early November, and the Bears followed by firing offensive coordinator Shane Waldron but keeping head coach Matt Eberflus—again, for now.

Then, the Jets kicked off the front-office carousel by firing their general manager, Joe Douglas, kicking their personnel search into high gear. A number of people across the NFL landscape are going to be hot commodities for these positions, and at least one of those people could come from the Minnesota Vikings.

According to ESPN’s NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler, current Vikings senior VP of player personnel Ryan Grigson could be a name to watch for the Jets’ opening or any other openings that become available. Grigson has helped build a Vikings team that exceeded expectations in 2024 and has added a number of high-quality talents to the roster since arriving in 2022.

Grigson also has previous experience as a GM in the league, serving in that position for the Indianapolis Colts from 2012 to 2016. That tenure was notable for the Colts taking former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Luck, along with Grigson and head coach Chuck Pagano, immediately turned the Colts’ fortunes around. From a lowly 2-14 team in 2011, they finished second in the AFC South with an 11-5 record in 2012. Grigson’s Colts won their division the next two seasons and made the playoffs.

Ultimately, though, the Colts could never get over the hump during Grigson’s tenure, and Grigson was fired after the Colts turned in back-to-back 8-8 seasons, missing the playoffs in two straight seasons for the first time since the beginning of the Peyton Manning era in Indianapolis.

Enough time has passed since his Colts’ tenure, and the Vikings have done well enough that Grigson will likely get a second chance at a GM gig if he wants it. Grigson’s days with the Vikings could be numbered whether that’s this year or in the near future.

Complete Vikings football personnel staff list with official titles

Adofo-Mensah’s football personnel staff is complete

First-year general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has completed his football personnel staff to kick-start a new era with the Minnesota Vikings.

It’s a versatile staff with a lot of smart football minds to work side-by-side with Adofo-Mensah to turn the Vikings back into a legitimate playoff contender.

Former Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson being named senior vice president of player personnel has obviously received the most attention.

Grigson had a rough run during his time in Indy, but he’s a longtime NFL executive with years of experience sitting in the same seat Adofo-Mensah is sitting in right now.

You can rest assured the Vikings GM thought long and hard about the staff he has assembled around him for this journey. So Grigson is clearly there for a reason, along with every other name on the list.

The Minnesota Vikings had their eye on Andrew Booth Jr. during the 2022 NFL Draft and liked the former Clemson star cornerback so much that they aggressively went after him.

The Vikings traded up to grab Booth in the draft, dealing the 53rd (second round), 77th (third round) and 192nd (sixth round) picks to the Indianapolis Colts in order to move up and get Booth in the second round with the 42nd overall selection.

“Of course we want to wait till our guy is at that particular spot, and in the meantime we want to get value for moving back,” Vikings senior football advisor Ryan Grigson said of the team’s draft strategy as it related to taking Booth. “So, obviously Kwesi (Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah) and Rob (Vikings executive vice president-football operations Rob Brzezinski) are so good in that area, and I feel like when our guy showed, we got aggressive, had the capital to go get him and the maneuverability. We went and got our guy. It was really a position of need, and we got a big, physical corner now.”

Take an inside look at the Vikings’ draft room when they moved up to draft the 2021 first-team All-ACC selection in Booth:

Grigson and the Vikings believe Booth, who finished with 39 tackles in addition to a team-best three interceptions in 11 games as a junior at Clemson last season, can hit the ground running as a professional cornerback thanks to what he brings to the table.

“The thing that really sticks out is how hard he competes, and he’s played at a high level at a big-time program, and he always seems to rise to the occasion,” Grigson said. “And if he makes a mistake, he’s looking to make up for it. That’s what’s special about this guy.

“He’s got a lot of dog in him, and our coaches really like what he brings to our system and the versatility in him.”

Vikings front-office member explains what is ‘special’ about Booth

After the Vikings landed the 2021 first-team All-ACC honoree, Vikings senior football advisor Ryan Grigson spoke to the media about what makes Booth stand out and why they wanted him in Minnesota.

“Big, physical, extremely competitive football player,” Grigson said. “Strong, will tackle, is versatile as a cover guy. He has length.”

Grigson and the Vikings believe Booth, who finished with 39 tackles in addition to a team-best three interceptions in 11 games last season, can hit the ground running as a professional cornerback thanks to what he brings to the table.

Members of the Vikings’ front office staff, including Grigson and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, aren’t worried about the sports hernia surgery that Booth underwent before the draft that precluded him from participating in the NFL Scouting Combine and Clemson’s Pro Day.

In addition to Booth’s physical traits, skills, athleticism and versatility, one of the former Tiger’s intangibles really impresses Grigson and the Vikings — his willingness to compete.

“The thing that really sticks out is how hard he competes, and he’s played at a high level at a big-time program, and he always seems to rise to the occasion,” Grigson said. “And if he makes a mistake, he’s looking to make up for it. That’s what’s special about this guy.

Former Colts GM Ryan Grigson joins Vikings front office

Former Colts GM Ryan Grigson is joining the Vikings front office under new GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.

Former Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson will join the Minnesota Vikings front office in a senior personnel position.

As Vikings’ new general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah builds his front office, he is bringing Grigson with him from the Cleveland Browns. Grigson was working as the senior football advisor since 2020.

Since Grigson’s departure from the Colts following the 2016 season, he’s held a few roles across the league. He joined the Browns in 2017 as a senior personnel executive. Then, he joined the Seattle Seahawks for two seasons (2018-2019) as a senior football consultant.

Then Grigson went back to the Browns for two more seasons (2020-2021) as the senior football advisor. His new role with the Vikings isn’t clear yet.

Though Grigson’s record as general manager was 49-31, he played a major role in the decline of franchise quarterback Andrew Luck. His neglect of the offensive line was a factor in Luck’s eventual retirement while using first-round picks on Trent Richardson (via trade) and Phillip Dorsett remains among the worst moves of the franchise.

Maybe Grigson has learned a bit from his time as the general manager of the colts, but the scars he’s left with the fanbase likely won’t ever go away.

Browns exec Ryan Grigson to join Vikings, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah

New Vikings GM, and former Browns exec, Adofo-Mensah is raiding Andrew Berry’s staff already:

The Cleveland Browns will be losing another executive this offseason. Earlier, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was hired by the Minnesota Vikings as their general manager. Adofo-Mensah was the team’s vice president of football operations for the last two seasons.

The loss of Adofo-Mensah should give Cleveland an extra third-round pick in this year’s NFL draft and another in next year’s.

Outside of the top jobs, normally front office turnover takes place after that year’s draft. Most scouts and front office executives have contracts that run through that event. The Browns front office could see other departures at that time but Andrew Berry is losing a senior advisor now, reportedly:

As noted by Garafolo, going to Minnesota reunites Grigson and Adofo-Mensah. While his role has not been identified yet, it is likely Grigson gets a title more familiar in NFL front offices as he looks to build his resume back up.

Grigson’s time as the Indianapolis Colts GM has been roundly criticized for his inability to build around and protect Andrew Luck. His trade for Trent Richardson stands out as his most disastrous move as he gave up a first-round pick for a running back who was unable to produce.

With Berry losing two members of his front office, it will be interesting if Cleveland brings in replacements especially if they lose other executives after the draft.

Former Colts GM Ryan Grigson joining Vikings front office

Vikings add a big name to the front office with Ryan Grigson hiring!

Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is making sure he’s surrounded by experienced minds that have sat in his seat before.

Per the Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling, the team is hiring former Indianapolis Colts GM Ryan Grigson to the front office in a “senior personnel position.”

The connection here comes from the time the two spent together with the Cleveland Browns. Grigson worked alongside Adofo-Mensah, who was the vice president of football operations at the time, as a senior football advisor.

So his addition to the front office is huge for the Vikings.

Grigson already has an established working relationship with Adofo-Mensah, and he can help guide the young GM in his first rodeo. Free agency and the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft will be big moments for Adofo-Mensah.

It’s a tricky situation in Minnesota with the Vikings not needing a complete rebuild, but there are clearly moves that must be made to ensure they’re competitive next season.

Grigson can provide quality insight considering he’s already been there and done that in Indy.

Report: Ex-Colts GM Ryan Grigson joins Browns as consultant

Ryan Grigson finds another gig.

Former Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson is reportedly joining the Cleveland Browns in a consultant and advisory role, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

After Grigson was fired from the Colts following the 2016 season, he hasn’t been around the NFL much. He did join the Browns in 2017 as a senior personnel executive and then also joined the Seattle Seahawks in 2018 as a senior football consultant.

There is a connection in Cleveland now that Andrew Berry has taken over the reins as general manager of the Browns. Berry was with the Colts for seven seasons in various scouting roles.

He was a scouting assistant for two seasons (2009–2010) and a pro scout for one season (2011). When Grigson took over in 2012, Berry was promoted to be the Colts’ pro scout coordinator. Berry joined the Browns front office in 2016.

It isn’t clear what specific role Grigson will be working in, but he will have plenty of personalities to work with in Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. alone.
