Ohio State has opened the seal on another installment of spring practice, and all football worshippers rejoiced in the Columbus metro area. We are just two days into all the fun, but one of the most notable things that happened just prior to the start of spring ball was the news of a contract extension for Ryan Day.

There’s plenty of storylines and questions media members will be inquiring about throughout the spring. But one of the first ones fired out there to the Ohio State head man was his feelings on the extension that will presumably keep him in Columbus for at least another six years.

Under the new terms, Day could be in Columbus through the 2026 season, and it also provides a significant raise. According to details, he’ll make $5.375 million in 2020, $6.5 million in 2021, and $7.6 million in 2022. That’s a significant step up from the $4.5 million he made in 2019 before any bonuses kicked in.

Day was understandably happy and gracious in what it meant to him and his family.

“Well, I think, the person and the people that we’re most excited about that (the contract extension) were my kids because they knew that they weren’t going to be the new kid in school for a long time again,” said Day. “And that’s the idea, that we’re here for a long time. And I certainly couldn’t be more grateful for the Board of Trustees, president Drake, and obviously Gene Smith — who I owe everything to him. And obviously Urban Meyer, to be in this position, because that’s a big deal.”

Day then went on to disclose the most important thing about his new contract. And it’s not just about the money.

“That changes our life as a family, and we don’t take that lightly,” Day said. “But the number one thing we’re excited about as a family is that we get to be in Columbus again hopefully for the next seven to ten years — hopefully twenty years. We want to be here as long as we can. We love it here, the kids love the school system, they have a set of friends, Nina loves it here, and that’s what’s most exciting about this.”

We only have one thing to say after hearing Day gush about Central Ohio. Eat your heart out Michigan.
