Ohio State at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. Ohio State has alternated wins and losses in its last four games, most recently suffering a 77-60 rout at then-No. 24 Minnesota as a 1.5-point underdog Sunday. The Buckeyes shot 31.1% (19-for-61) for the game, including just 25% (8-for-32) in the second half. Duane Washington Jr. scored a team-high 21 points in the loss. The junior guard’s 14.9 points per game leads three Buckeyes in double figures, while sophomore F E.J. Liddell (13.9 PPG) is the top rebounder (6.4 RPG). Starting PG CJ Walker (8.7 PPG, team-high 4.2 APG) is out indefinitely with torn ligaments in his right hand.
  2. Rutgers enters on a two-game skid, falling to then-No. 11 Iowa 77-75 at home Jan. 2, and at Michigan State 68-45 Jan 5. The Scarlet Knights covered as 3.5-point underdogs vs. the Hawkeyes, but failed to cover as 3-point ‘dogs at the Spartans. Rutgers opened the season 6-0, but have lost three of the its last four games. Junior G Ron Harper Jr. leads the Scarlet Knights with 21.1 PPG, and junior C Myles Johnson averages a team-best 8.5 RPG.
  3. The Buckeyes have won their last three vs. the Scarlet Knights, including an 80-68 victory as 3-point home favorites Dec. 23. Washington scored 16 of his game-high 22 points as OSU rallied from a 16-point, second-half deficit with 15 minutes to go. The Buckeyes lead the all-time series 9-3, including 8-3 since the Scarlet Knights joined the Big Ten in 2014-15.

Ohio State at Rutgers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rutgers 76, Ohio State 69

Money line (ML)

PASS. The Scarlet Knights take this one, but I’ll lay the points with the spread instead of playing the -190 ML, which is a bit steep.

Against the spread (ATS)

RUTGERS -4.5 (-105) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Buckeyes will be at a big disadvantage with their floor leader out in Walker, who leads the team with 31.5 minutes played per game. They’re also 0-4-1 ATS in their last five road games.

The Scarlet Knights, 15-5-2 ATS in their last 22 home games, have the “motivation factor” working for them as they’ll look to avenge the December loss in Columbus.

ATS: Ohio State 5-5-1 | Rutgers 5-4-1

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the OVER 139.5 (-110). Rutgers averages 76.5 PPG, while Ohio State averages 76.3 PPG, which should decrease a bit without Walker running the show.

I’m concerned if Ohio State scores enough, but Rutgers shouldn’t have a problem. The Over is 9-3-1 in Scarlet Knights’ last 13 home games.

O/U records: Ohio State 5-6 | Rutgers 6-3-1

Rutgers at Michigan State odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Michigan State Spartans sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (7-2 overall, 3-2 Big Ten) visit the Michigan State Spartans (7-3, 1-3) Tuesday for a 9 p.m. ET tip. Below, we analyze the Rutgers-Michigan State college basketball betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Scarlet Knights are No. 14 in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll. The Spartans dropped out of the Top 25 after losing three of their last four games.

Rutgers at Michigan State: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:05 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Rutgers -115 (bet $115 to win $100) | Michigan State -105 (bet $105 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Rutgers -1.5 (-105) | Michigan State +1.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under: 151.5. (O: -110 | U: -110)

Rutgers at Michigan State: Three things to know

  1. Rutgers has alternated wins and losses over its last four games, recently suffering a heartbreaker at home to then-No. 11 and now-No. 7 Iowa 77-75 Saturday. In a nip-and-tuck battle that had six lead changes in the final 2 minutes, the Scarlet Knights, who covered as 3.5-point underdogs, were done in by their free-throw shooting. They finished 4-for-12 from the line, including 3-for-9 in the second half. Rutgers senior G Jacob Young scored a team-high 17 points, and junior C Myles Johnson added 13 points with a team-high 10 rebounds. Junior G Ron Harper Jr.‘s 22.1 points per game lead four Scarlet Knights in double figures.
  2. Michigan State snapped a three-game skid with an 84-77 victory at Nebraska Saturday but failed to cover as an 8-point favorite. Junior F Aaron Henry scored a career-high 27-points as the Spartans beat the Cornhuskers for a seventh consecutive time. Henry (13.4 PPG) and junior F Joey Hauser (12.3 PPG) are the only two Spartans averaging more than 10 points. Hauser is MSU’s top rebounder (7.9 RPG), and Henry leads in assists (4.1 APG), steals (1.6 SPG) and blocks (1.3 BPG).
  3. The two Big Ten rivals met only once last season with Michigan State claiming a 77-65 home victory. Rutgers covered the spread as a 14.5-point underdog.

Rutgers at Michigan State: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Michigan State 75, Rutgers 69

Money line (ML)

MICHIGAN STATE (-105) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Spartans are 10-0 all-time vs. the Scarlet Knights, including 9-0 since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014. Plus, Michigan State is 6-0 at home vs. Rutgers, winning by an average of 17.8 points.

I love trends, so while the Scarlet Knights have definitely been the better team up to this point, I’m putting my trust in head coach Tom Izzo. He’ll have the Spartans ready, prepared and focused.

Against the spread (ATS)

I’m PASSING on the spread but wouldn’t blame you if you prefer to take the points with the Spartans (+1.5, -115) instead of playing the money line where we would need a straight-up win. Your +1.5 bet cashes even if MSU loses by 1 point.

Since I’m predicting a Spartans win, I’m not going to worry about the possibility of a Michigan State 1-point loss.

ATS records: Rutgers 5-3-1 | Michigan State 2-8

Over/Under (O/U)

The 151.5 O/U seems high, but Rutgers averages 80.0 PPG and Michigan State is scoring at a 79.0 PPG clip. The Knights allow 71.6 PPG and the Spartans allow 75.6 PPG.

With the Scarlet Knights struggling from the charity stripe, shooting an abysmal 60.5% to rank 329th in the country, I’ll wager a HALF-UNIT on the UNDER 151.5 (-110).

O/U records: Rutgers 6-2-1 | Michigan State 6-4

Purdue at Rutgers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Purdue Boilermakers at Rutgers Scarlet Knights sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Purdue Boilermakers (7-3 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) visit the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-1, 2-1) Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. ET tip-off at Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J. Below, we analyze the Purdue-Rutgers college basketball betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Rutgers is No. 13 in the Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Purdue at Rutgers: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 10:40 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Purdue +135 (bet $100 to win $135) | Rutgers -160 (bet $160 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Purdue +3.5 (-115) | Rutgers -3.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 136.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Purdue at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. The Scarlet Knights are looking to bounce back from their first setback of the season. They took an 80-68 loss at Ohio State last Wednesday. Rutgers shot a season-low 41.4% from the field in that contest. For the season, RU ranks third in the Big Ten with a 49.8% accuracy mark from the floor. The Knights were also out-rebounded 42-23 by the Buckeyes.
  2. Purdue has won four of five games since scoring a season-low 54 points in a Dec. 8 loss at Miami (58-54). The game the Boilermakers dropped in that stretch was two back when they scored just 55 points at Iowa. The games against the Hurricanes and Hawkeyes mark Purdue’s only true road games this season. The Boilers shot under 40% from the field in each of those games
  3. The Knights downed the Boilermakers twice last season, covering as 3-point favorites in a 70-63 win at home (Jan. 28) and winning outright (71-68) as a 5-point underdog March 7. Rutgers is 4-1 against the spread in its last five games with Purdue (2-0 ATS at home).

Purdue at Rutgers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rutgers 70, Purdue 66

Money line (ML)

To win the game outright, Purdue will likely need to drain 3-pointers, leverage an advantage in offensive rebounding, and knock down free throws. PU has scuffled from distance on the road (24%) and has been shaky of late on uncontested 15-footers (62.9% last three games).

Keep an eye on the line: Rutgers is a value play at -145, but PASS at anything lower than that price.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Knights have been clicking at a top-40 level in efficiency analytics at both ends of the floor. They take care of the basketball and defend well at the rim but an uptick on the spread nixes much of the value to be had here.

THE LEAN IS ON RUTGERS -3.5 (-105), but a partial-unit play may be in order unless you can get a -3 tag or better.

Over/Under (O/U)

Rutgers has a few injury concerns; they aren’t major enough to nix taking the Knights as a side, but a team already out-kicking its coverage from a FG% standpoint could well be getting by at a number far south of its 80.6 point per game output.

BACK THE UNDER 136.5 (-105).

Rutgers at Ohio State odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Ohio State Buckeyes sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-0 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) visit the Ohio State Buckeyes (6-1, 0-1) for a 4:30 p.m. ET tip-off in a ranked-on-ranked Big Ten battle at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Below, we analyze the Rutgers-Ohio State college basketball betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Rutgers is No. 12 in the Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. Ohio State is ranked 20th.

Rutgers at Ohio State: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 1:50 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Rutgers +125 (bet $100 to win $125) | Ohio State -150 (bet $150 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Rutgers +2 (+100) | Ohio State -2 (-120)
  • Over/Under: 139.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Rutgers at Ohio State: Three things to know

  1. The Knights are playing their second straight game against a ranked foe. Rutgers defeated then-No. 13 Illinois 91-88 Sunday. RU won despite the Illini shooting 54% from the field. The Knights outscored Illinois 25-11 at the charity stripe. Rutgers went to the line 36 times, their most in a single game since Jan. 28.
  2. Ohio State is averaging a robust 77.0 points per game, a would-be high in Chris Holtmann’s era as head coach (2017-present). Holtmann has seen his Buckeyes prevail in a few areas where hidden points can be found. Ohio State is shooting 77% at the free-throw line, hauling down 12.3 offensive rebounds per game and committing just 9.1 turnovers per contest. All three figures rank second in the Big Ten.
  3. The Buckeyes are 4-0 on their home hardwood this season, and dating back to last season have won 10 in a row in Columbus. That stretch includes a Feb. 12 victory (72-66) over the Scarlet Knights. OSU led that game by 15 at the half and would outscore RU from 3-point range and at the foul line.

Rutgers at Ohio State: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Ohio State 72, Rutgers 67

Money line (ML)

The lean is on Ohio State, but PASS unless you get a tag closer to -140.

Against the spread (ATS)

Look for the Buckeyes to control the game in the paint. Rutgers has a couple of injury issues that could affect whether guys play or how many minutes they can contribute. Both teams can get to the line frequently, but that’s a particular advantage for OSU.

During their 10-game home winning streak, the Buckeyes have gone 8-2 ATS. TAKE OHIO STATE -2 (-120) in a late-afternoon, holiday-week affair that may not have all of RU’s attention.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS on a well-pegged number.

Rankings courtesy of USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

  • Money line: Illinois -140 (bet $140 to win $100) | Rutgers +115 (bet $100 to win $115)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Illinois -1.5 (-120) | Rutgers +1.5 (+100)
  • Over/Under: 144 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Illinois at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. Illinois opened its Big Ten season with a 92-65 home rout of Minnesota Tuesday. Sophomore C Kofi Cockburn scored a career-high 33 points and pulled in 13 rebounds in just 25 minutes as the Illini easily covered as 9-point favorites. Junior G Ayo Dosunmu leads Illinois with 22.7 points per game. Cockburn averages 16.7 PPG and a team-high 9.4 rebounds per game. The Illini had dropped their previous game at Missouri 81-78 as 3-point favorites last Saturday.
  2. Rutgers, which was a 2.5-point underdog, opened conference play with a 74-60 win at Maryland Monday. Junior G Ron Harper Jr. scored 19 of his game-high 27 points in the second half and the Scarlet Knights won their first Big Ten opener since joining the conference in 2014. Harper leads the Knights with 23.2 PPG, while junior C Myles Johnson averages a team-best 9.0 RPG.
  3. Illinois leads the all-time series vs. Rutgers 8-2 (7-2 in Big Ten games), but the Scarlet Knights won the last matchup 72-57 as 4.5-point favorites Feb. 15. Rutgers led 34-32 at the half and pulled away with a 38-25 second half. Harper scored a game-high 27 points in the Rutgers win.

Illinois at Rutgers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Illinois 68, Rutgers 62

Money line (ML)

PASS. Rutgers opened as a 1-point favorite, but the line has moved in Illinois’ favor overnight. With it being so close, let’s just focus on the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

ILLINOIS -1.5 (-120) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1.5 times your usual wager. No question about it, Rutgers is playing well and has been very impressive, but you have to go all the way back to 1934-35 to find the last time a Scarlet Knights team opened a season with five consecutive double-digit victories.

This Illinois squad is at a different level. The Illini have the talent to win a national championship. With no full house at the RAC (Rutgers Athletic Center), talent wins out. HAMMER THE ILLINI -1.5 (-120)!

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 144 (-105) with a HALF-UNIT WAGER. Illinois’ defense allows 64.6 PPG, while Rutgers yields 67.0 PPG. Look for a sluggish start in this Sunday afternoon matchup.

Nebraska at Rutgers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Nebraska Cornhuskers at Rutgers Scarlet Knights sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-5, 2-5 Big Ten) and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-5, 3-5) meet Friday for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, N.J. Below, we analyze the Nebraska-Rutgers college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Nebraska at Rutgers: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 12:07 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Nebraska -250 (bet $250 to win $100) | Rutgers +200 (bet $100 to win $225)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Nebraska -7 (+100) | Rutgers +7 (-120)
  • Over/Under: 52.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Nebraska at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. The Cornhuskers are coming off a disappointing 24-17 loss at home to Minnesota, failing to win outright as nine-point favorites. Nebraska was unable to carry over the momentum of its 37-27 road win at Purdue in the previous game on Dec. 5.
  2. The Scarlet Knights topped Maryland on the road last Saturday, winning 27-24 in overtime as three-point underdogs. The Scarlet Knights have won two of the past three games, and they’re 3-1 ATS in the past four while two of the games have been decided in overtime.
  3. The Under is 6-1 overall this season for Nebraska, while the Under has hit in each of the past two for Rutgers, including last week’s game which could not be decided in regulation.

Nebraska at Rutgers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rutgers 28, Nebraska 24

Money line (ML)

RUTGERS (+200) is worth a roll of the dice, as the opportunity to double up your initial investment doesn’t come up very often. The Scarlet Knights are on their home field, and Nebraska (-250) just hasn’t shown any consistency this season, certainly not enough to risk nearly three times your potential return.

Against the spread (ATS)

RUTGERS +7 (-120) is a good play on their home turf catching a flat seven from Nebraska. Yes, if we’re looking at names only, Nebraska should be able to push past the doormat of the Big Ten, Rutgers.

But if we’re looking at simple facts and sample size from this season, what exactly has Big Red done that is more impressive than Rutgers, and what warrants making them a touchdown favorite on the road?

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 52.5 (-115) is the way to go here. Nebraska has hit the Under in six of seven games overall this season, and Rutgers has cashed the Under in each of the past two. Both teams are very middle of the road offensively, too, with Rutgers scoring 27.4 PPG, and Nebraska managing just 22.4 PPG.

Rutgers at Maryland odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Maryland Terrapins sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (4-0) head down the I-95 for a Big Ten showdown against the Maryland Terrapins (4-1) at the Xfinity Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Rutgers-Maryland college basketball betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Scarlet Knights are No. 22 in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s College Basketball Coaches Poll.

Rutgers at Maryland: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Rutgers +125 (bet $100 to win $125) | Maryland -167 (bet $167 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Rutgers +2.5 (-110) | Maryland -2.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 138.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Rutgers at Maryland: Three things to know

  1. Rutgers won four straight home games to begin the season, including a 79-69 win as a 5-point favorite against Syracuse last Tuesday. G Ron Harper Jr. had a game-high 26 points on 9-for-13 shooting and leads the Scarlet Knights in points per game (22.3) and rebounds per game (7.5).
  2. Maryland got trounced 67-51 by Clemson as a 2-point road dog in its previous game. The Terrapins were down 38-15 at halftime due in large part to an uncharacteristically poor shooting day. Maryland shot just 40% from the field against Clemson but is 16th in the country in field-goal percentage on the year.
  3. The Scarlet Knights snapped an 8-game losing streak to the Terrapins since joining the Big Ten in 2014 with a 78-67 win in their last meeting. Rutgers covered the spread in three of its last four games against Maryland.

Rutgers at Maryland: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Maryland 76, Rutgers 69

Money line (ML)

Given how Rutgers has played to start the year and Maryland losing its top two scorers from last year’s game against Scarlet Knights (one being PF Jalen Smith who was drafted by the Phoenix Suns), this is a sketchy line.

It makes a little more sense when you dig deeper. Maryland has an edge in both free-throw rate and 3-point rate. The Scarlet Knights are ranked 300th in free throw percentage and 188th in 3-point percentage.

The market is excusing Maryland from a 16-point whooping it took at the hands of Clemson last week because Rutgers isn’t nearly as tough defensively as Clemson. Furthermore, Rutgers has played only the 203rd-toughest schedule while Maryland’s strength of schedule is ranked No. 37, according to Sports-Reference.com.

GIMME MARYLAND (-167) for 1.5 units.

Against the spread (ATS)

As much of a sucker as I am for value, I’ll PASS on the spread. I’ll point to each team’s ATS record—Rutgers is 1-2-1 ATS and Maryland is 3-2 ATS—to strengthen my argument for the money line. The Terrapins are exceeding bookmakers’ expectations with a tougher schedule than the Scarlet Knights.

Over/Under (O/U)

Rutgers plays at the 84th-fastest pace in the country and averages nearly 10 field-goal attempts more per game than a Maryland team ranked 308th in pace.

The Scarlet Knights will push the pace of this game early and the Terrapins will go along with that because their shooting will get hot. I “LIKE” OVER 138.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-5 overall, 2-5 Big Ten) visit the Maryland Terrapins (2-2, 2-2) for a conference showdown at noon ET in Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. Below, we analyze the Rutgers-Maryland college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Rutgers at Maryland: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday at 12:33 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Rutgers +220 (bet $100 to win $220) | Maryland -275 (bet $275 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Rutgers +7.5 (-110) | Maryland -7.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 58.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Rutgers at Maryland: Three things to know

  1. Rutgers took a 23-7 loss to Penn State as a 13.5-point home underdog last week. The Scarlet Knights rush defense got steamrolled as the Nittany Lions outrushed them by 165 yards (248-83). Rutgers slipped to 4-3 ATS on the year after the loss.
  2. Maryland’s game last week against Michigan was canceled due to positive COVID tests within the Wolverines program. The Terrapins were pounded 27-11 by Indiana in their last game Nov. 28 and failed to cover as 11.5-point underdogs.
  3. Rutgers-Maryland have played 6 games since both joined the Big Ten in 2014. The Terrapins are 4-2 straight up and ATS in those meetings.

Rutgers at Maryland: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rutgers 35, Maryland 31

Money line (ML)

If Rutgers can force turnovers, which it has in five straight games, the Scarlet Knights can steal a win on the road vs. Maryland. The Terrapins have a minus-5 turnover differential whereas Rutgers is even.

like the Scarlet Knights to cover so I lean RUTGERS (+220) for a quarter-unit. Typically, I’ll sprinkle on an underdog’s money line if I’m taking the points as a long-term strategy, but feel free to pass and stick with the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

Maryland’s offense is far too one-dimensional to be laying more than a touchdown. The only game the Terrapins have gained more than 3.5 yards per rush was against Minnesota – its defense ranks dead last in opponent’s yards per play (out of 127 teams).

Also, Maryland’s rush defense is terrible. The Terrapins are giving up 4.9 yards per rush and rank 117th in opponent’s rushing yards per game. Rutgers is 2-0 outright when it has outgained opponents in rushing yards.

Rutgers is the much healthier side. You have to scroll through Maryland’s injury report, which is so extensive. The Terrapins have two starting offensive linemen, their top two RBs and WRs all listed as questionable, while the Scarlet Knights’ injury report is clean.

Finally, the Scarlet Knights are better in high-leverage situations. Rutgers has a higher net third-down conversion and red-zone scoring percentage. GIMME RUTGERS +7.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Prior to last week’s game vs. Penn State, Rutgers has been an Over machine (5-2 O/U this season) and the reason for the Under hitting in the PSU game was because of heavy winds and rain.

The weather forecast for Saturday’s game is clear and neither team can play much defense. Rutgers is ranked 97th in opponent’s PPG (33.9) and Maryland is ranked 94th (33.3 PPG).

TAKE OVER 58.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Penn State at Rutgers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Penn State Nittany Lions at Rutgers Scarlet Knights sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Penn State Nittany Lions (1-5) square off against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-4) Saturday in a Big Ten game at noon ET at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, N.J. Below, we analyze the Penn State-Rutgers college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Penn State at Rutgers: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday at 5:15 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Penn State -400 (bet $400 to win $100) | Rutgers +310 (bet $100 to win $310)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Penn State -11.5 (-110) | Rutgers +11.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 52.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Penn State at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. Penn State got off the schneid by winning 27-17 at Michigan as a 1-point favorite. It was an even more decisive victory than the 10-point margin indicates as the Nittany Lions out-gained the Wolverines by 131 total yards and held their passing game to only 112 yards.
  2. Rutgers won its own road game against a conference foe in a 37-30 victory over Purdue. The Scarlet Knights were 12-point underdogs and moved to 4-2 ATS following the win.
  3. Penn State is 6-0 vs. Rutgers since the Scarlet Knights joined the Big Ten in 2014. The Nittany Lions are 0-3 ATS since 2017, but Penn State was favored by at least 28.5 points in all three games.

Penn State at Rutgers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rutgers 27, Penn State 24

Money line (ML)

I am locked into Rutgers covering the spread but as a personal rule, I like to sprinkle a little cash on a big underdog if I’m taking the points. I lean RUTGERS +310 for a quarter-unit.

Against the spread (ATS)

Penn State laying too many points vs. Rutgers is becoming an annual thing perhaps. The popularity of these two programs plays a major role in why Penn State is laying double digits.

My concern is BetMGM is baiting us to take Rutgers here. The game opened with the Nittany Lions laying 9 points but it’s been steamed up to the current number even though 80% of the money is on the Scarlet Knights, according to Pregame.com.

It’s great that Penn State head coach James Franklin has won 67% of his games while he’s been there but this ain’t the Nittany Lions of previous seasons. They’ve lost four future NFL players to a combination of injuries and opt-outs.

Penn State is 103rd in points per play, 125th in red-zone scoring percentage and 90th in yards per rush. There is no way the Nittany Lions should be laying double digits on the road.

GIMME RUTGERS +11.5 (-110) for 2 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

Saturday’s weather forecast in Piscataway is predicting 16 MPH winds and a 45% chance of rain. Which in part explains why 87% of the money wagered on the total is hitting the Under and bringing it down from the 57.5-point opener.

Furthermore, Penn State-Rutgers has gone Under in six consecutive games and nothing really stands out from either offense. Rutgers has played some fun games (5-1 Over/Under record) and Penn State has allowed 30 or more points in every game aside from its last.

PASS ON THE TOTAL with a slight lean to the Under.

Rutgers at Purdue odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Purdue Boilermakers sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-4 overall, 1-4 Big Ten) head to Ross-Ade Stadium Saturday to play the Purdue Boilermakers (2-2, 2-2) at 4 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Rutgers-Purdue college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Rutgers at Purdue: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:07 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Rutgers +320 (bet $100 to win $320) | Purdue -417 (bet $417 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Rutgers +11 (-110) | Purdue -11 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 60.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Rutgers at Purdue: Three things to know

  1. Rutgers took a rough triple-overtime loss at the hands of Michigan 48-42 last week. The Scarlet Knights covered as 11-point home underdogs, but Rutgers did have a 6-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  2. Purdue was absolutely screwed by one of the worst referee calls you’ll ever see last week in a 34-31 loss to Minnesota. TE Payne Durham’s would-be go-ahead touchdown catch with 52 seconds remaining was negated by a phantom offensive pass interference penalty.
  3. The Scarlet Knights and Boilermakers have only played once since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014. Rutgers upset Purdue 14-12 and covered as a 9.5-point underdog in October 2017.

Rutgers at Purdue: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Purdue 37, Rutgers 30

Money line (ML)

I don’t see Purdue losing a third straight game against a feisty, but 1-4 Rutgers team. However, no way I am laying more than 4-to-1 for an outright Purdue win in a conference game.

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE.

Against the spread (ATS)

Purdue is way too one-dimensional for me to lay such a big number. The Boilermakers’ offensive imbalance explains why they haven’t been covering as favorites (Purdue is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 games as a favorite).

The Boilermakers are 123rd in rushing yards per game, plus Football Outsiders grades their offensive line 118th in line yards, 108th in opportunity rate and 123rd in stuff rate. If Purdue can’t salt away a game with its ground attack, then that leaves the backdoor cover wide open for Rutgers.

Also, Purdue starting defensive end, and former five-star recruit, George Karlaftis will miss the game after testing positive for COVID. It’s a mystery how Purdue will get a successful pass rush as Karlaftis has two of the Boilers’ three sacks this season – the Boilermakers rank 125th in sack rate.

Lastly, we can fade the market by taking the Scarlet Knights here. This line opened at Purdue -10.5 and the spread has only moved to the current price even though 84% of the money wagered and 71% of the bets placed is on the Boilermakers, according to Pregame.com. The lack of movement in the spread despite the overwhelming support for Purdue is puzzling.

GIMME RUTGERS +11 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Rutgers passing game has been trending in the right direction and Purdue’s pass defense has been bad this season. The Boilermakers aren’t getting to the quarterback and they are 63rd in opponent’s completion percentage and 91st in opponent’s passing yards per game.

Purdue WR Rondale Moore, a future NFL receiver, made his 2020 debut last game (15 catches for 116 yards). He joins WR David Bell, who’s been fantastic this season and will be playing on Sundays, too.

Furthermore, both team’s weak ground games and poor pass defenses mean these teams will be slinging the rock around the field. Take OVER 60.5 (-110) for 1 unit.
