Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Kansas City Royals (53-77) face the Chicago White Sox (63-66) Wednesday in the 2nd game of a 3-game set at Guaranteed Rate Field. First pitch is set for 8:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Royals vs. White Sox odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Royals lead 10-7

The Royals clinched the season series against the ChiSox Tuesday with a 9-7 backhand to the chin. They scored in all but 2 innings of the game and really threw grease on the dumpster fire the White Sox have been this season. 1B Nick Pratto went 4-for-5 with 2 home runs to raise his batting average 37 points to .209 to get over the Mendoza Line.

Chicago has lost 5 in a row to the likes of the Baltimore Orioles, Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City. A team still in the thick of a pennant race has swirled the bowl to those 3 teams of late. They are now 6 games out in the AL Central, and with September looming, they need to play better immediately.

Royals at White Sox projected starters

RHP Kris Bubic vs. RHP Lance Lynn

Bubic (2-9, 5.62 ERA) makes his 22nd start and 23rd appearance. He has a 1.68 WHIP, 4.4 BB/9 and 7.5 K/9 in 99 1/3 IP.

  • Aug. 10 vs. White Sox: 5 2/3 IP, 3 R (1 ER), 7 H, 3 BB and 6 K
  • Last 3 starts: 0-3, 9.45 ERA, 2.48 WHIP

Lynn (3-5, 5.00 ERA) makes his 15th start. He has a 1.19 WHIP, 1.5 BB/9 and 9.7 K/9 in 77 1/3 IP.

  • 2 starts vs. KC this year: 12 IP, 5 ER (3.75 ERA), 1 BB, 13 K
  • Has been victimized by the HR ball; 1.7 HR/9 the highest of his career

Royals at White Sox picks and predictions

Prediction

White Sox 6, Royals 4

Money line

Lynn is a curious case this season because his 1.5 BB/9 is the best of his career, and his 9.7 K/9 is one his better ones, but he has allowed 15 homers in 77 1/3 innings. He allowed just 18 in 157 IP last year. He is being victimized a bit by a .302 BABIP, but he really is better than his ERA indicates. I expect a statement performance from him Wednesday.

Take LANCE LYNN OVER 6.5 K’S (-145). I think the White Sox win, but we’re not taking the -205 ML.

Run line/Against the spread

We’re going a couple unconventional routes here, and that’s to protect ourselves from a heavily favored sinking ship of a trap. Bubic, as fun as his name is to pronounce, has been pounced on lately. The White Sox do the same. The WHITE SOX OVER 2.5 TOTAL RUNS FIRST 5 INNINGS (-113) is at a great price.

Over/Under

The Over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings between the teams. The wind is blowing out to left-center field at 7 mph. Both pitchers have high ERAs. It’s a hitters’ park. This really should be a 9.5 number. Take the OVER 8.5 (-108).

Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Kansas City Royals (40-62) take on the Chicago White Sox (51-50) Monday in the 1st game of a 3-game set at Guaranteed Rate Field. First pitch is set for 8:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Royals vs. White Sox odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Tied 4-4.

The Royals snapped a 5-game losing streak Sunday by taking down the mighty New York Yankees 8-6. Kansas City has started shipping off assets before the Tuesday trade deadline as they sent OF Andrew Benintendi to the Yankees. More veterans could be on their way out.

The White Sox are showing signs of life as they’re 6-4 in the last 10 and 12-8 in the last 20. They’re a team to watch at the deadline because they’re just 2 games out of 1st place in the AL Central after a dismal 1st half. They just took 2 of 3 from the lowly Oakland Athletics and should do at least the same against the Royals.

Royals at White Sox projected starters

RHP Brad Keller vs. RHP Michael Kopech

Keller (5-11, 4.18 ERA) makes his 20th start. He has a 1.32 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9 and 6.1 K/9 in 107 2/3 IP.

  • Has a 4.76 ERA in his last 4 starts
  • Has a 2.57 ERA and 0.79 WHIP with 6 K in 14 IP against the White Sox this year

Kopech (4-6, 3.16 ERA) makes his 19th start. He has a 1.21 WHIP, 4.6 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 in 88 1/3 IP.

  • Is a little more hittable at home with a 3.22 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 7.5 K/9 vs. 3.09 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 8.5 K/9 on road
  • Allowed 2 ER on 3 H, 4 BB and 3 K in 5 IP against KC April 28

Royals at White Sox picks and predictions

Prediction

White Sox 5, Royals 3

Money line

This is a slippery slope because Kopech’s walk total could decide this one. In 2 career starts against KC, he has allowed just 5 hits, but walked 6 in 9 innings. He has also walked 3 or more in 5 of his last 6 starts. I think the White Sox, playing at home, have enough to get this done. Take the WHITE SOX (-170) for a HALF UNIT.

Run line/Against the spread

I don’t trust the Royals’ offense to stay within a run, and I don’t trust Chicago to win by 2. One prop bet I am confident in, though, is KOPECH UNDER 5.5 STRIKEOUTS (-150). Kopech should be a K-per-inning pitcher, but his lack of control holds him back. In 2 career starts against the Royals, he struck out 3 and 5 hitters. He has only struck out 6 once in his last 8 starts. The Royals also don’t strike out much as they’re the 7th-toughest team to whiff.

Over/Under

I’m going to stay away from this one. The Under was 9.5 (-135) Monday  morning, and it has been bet down to 8.5. There’s not enough wiggle room in there for me to indulge. PASS.

Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Chicago White Sox (6-9) host the Kansas City Royals (5-9) Tuesday at Guaranteed Rate Field for the start of a 3-game set with the first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Royals vs. White Sox odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Kansas City has lost 4 in a row, including being swept in 3 at the Seattle Mariners over the weekend.

Chicago is on a worse run, entering on a 7-game slide. The White Sox suffered consecutive 3-game series sweeps at the Minnesota Twins (over the weekend) and the Cleveland Guardians.

The Royals beat the White Sox in last year’s regular-season series 10-9, including 5-5 at Chicago. The White Sox outscored the Royals by 1 run (72-71) in the 19 games.

Royals at White Sox projected starters

LHP Daniel Lynch vs. LHP Dallas Keuchel

Lynch (1-1, 5.40 ERA) beat the Twins Tuesday 2-0, pitching 5-scoreless innings with 4 H, 1 BB and 2 K.

  • 2021 vs. White Sox: 1-2 with a 16.20 ERA (8 1/3 IP, 15 ER), 16 H, 6 BB and 10 K over 3 starts.
  • vs. White Sox on the current roster: 20.70 FIP with a .378 expected batting average (xBA), .558 expected wOBA (xwOBA), .901 expected slugging percentage (xSLG), 12.5 K% and 93.0 mph exit velocity (EV) in 32 plate appearances (PA).

Keuchel (1-1, 15.00 ERA) got roughed up for 10 ER in just 1 inning on 10 H and 1 BB with 1 K in an 11-1 loss at the Guardians Wednesday.

  • 2021 vs. Royals: 0-3 with a 6.60 ERA (15 IP, 11 ER), 16 H, 6 BB and 9 K across 3 starts.
  • vs. Royals on the current roster: 3.13 FIP with a .235 xBA, .275 xwOBA, .317 xSLG, 20.1 K% and 86.8 mph EV in 169 PA.

Royals at White Sox picks and predictions

Prediction

Royals 5, White Sox 4

Money line

LEAN to the ROYALS (+125).

They have a sizeable edge in the pitching department, but the White Sox hit much better versus left-handed pitching.

Lynch is a starter with a lot more upside, whereas Keuchel has settled into a “middle-of-the-rotation” starter at best at this point of his career.

More importantly, K.C.’s bullpen has pitched far better than Chicago’s thus far. Royals relievers are 2nd in FIP, 3rd in home runs allowed per 9 innings and 4th in WAR, per FanGraphs.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS even though K.C. has a better RL record as a road underdog (40-29) since the beginning of last season than Chicago does as a home favorite (38-37).

The Royals also have a better RL record (37-39) in divisional games than the White Sox (35-41). But, ultimately, the Royals +1.5 (-160) is a bit pricey for my blood.

I can’t back the White Sox -1.5 (+130) given how poorly they’ve played recently and Keuchel getting the start. Keuchel is the lowest power-ranked starter in Chicago’s rotation, according to FanGraphs, and has the worst FIP (6.23).

Over/Under

LEAN to the OVER 8.5 (-125) since Chicago’s lineup is 2nd in both wRC+ and wOBA versus lefties and the weather forecast is predicting double-digit mph winds blowing out to center field.

It’s only a slight LEAN because the Under seems like the “sharper” play since it has heavier juice and there’s reverse-line movement headed South of the total.

Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Kansas City Royals (45-60) and Chicago White Sox (63-44) play the middle game of a three-game series Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. ET at Guaranteed Rate Field. Let’s analyze the lines around the Royals vs. White Sox odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Carlos Hernandez is the projected starting pitcher for the Royals. Over three starts and 12 relief appearances, he is 2-1 with a 4.98 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 11.0 K/9 and 5.8 BB/9 through 34 1/3 IP.

  • Coming off 6 scoreless innings against these same White Sox Thursday. Wednesday’s turn in Chicago will mark his fourth straight appearance as a starter.
  • Has logged only 11 career innings on the road with a 6.55 ERA and 1.91 WHIP.

RHP Lucas Giolito is the projected starter for the White Sox. He is 8-7 with a 3.67 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 10.3 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 through 125 IP spanning 21 starts.

  • Current Royals batters own an aggregate .648 OPS against him. Pitched against K.C. July 28 and allowed 1 ER over 6 IP. Through three starts against the Royals this season (17 IP), he has registered a 3.71 ERA.
  • Owns a 3.14 ERA and 0.97 WHIP at home in 2021.

Prediction

White Sox 4, Royals 3

Money line (ML)

The pale Hose endured a 2-6 stretch from July 21-29, but the AL Central leaders look to have bounced back to form in recent games. Chicago took Tuesday’s series opener 7-1 and is 3-1 over its last 4 games. In the bigger picture, even with the late-July slide, the White Sox are 19-12 over their last 31 contests.

Kansas City’s bats have gone silent in a losing skid stretched to four games with Tuesday’s defeat. Over the quartet of losses, K.C. has scored just 1.5 runs per game on an anemic .452 OPS.

So, add in the pitching matchup for Wednesday, and Chicago is a clear favorite. But are the White Sox a prohibitive favorite from a betting standpoint?

No, they aren’t. Big favorites in MLB often get the public tuned into the other side, so much so there can often be value in a play at -250 or -300. The same thing happens in thoroughbred racing and a 3-to-5 favorite can take on value while longshots get over-bet.

Giolito is for real and is just now seeing his season numbers normalize after some high home run/fly-ball rates in the first half. He has good numbers against the Royals, a club that is much weaker against right-handed pitching.

Add in a Chicago offense, which owns an .835 OPS with 14 HR over its last seven home games, and a top-notch (but undervalued and now trade-bolstered) bullpen.

TAKE CHICAGO (-250).

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

K.C. plays in a lot of 1-run games. The price on Chicago is decent for more risk-averse players on pricing but the run-and-a-half adds risk, too. PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

The White Sox and their home yard tend to be over-bet on the high side. The Under is 30-23-3 in Chicago’s home games.

With the pitching in this one, and a low-humidity/inward breeze weather forecast, BACK THE UNDER 8.5 (-102).
