Bellator 244 results: John Salter dominates Andrew Kapel, en route to third-round submission

A dominant performance at Bellator 244 should help John Salter’s case for a middleweight title shot.

[autotag]John Salter[/autotag] entered Bellator 244 looking to stake his claim to a middleweight title shot. Another submission win should help his case.

On Friday night, Salter cruised until defeating [autotag]Andrew Kapel[/autotag] with an arm-triangle choke at the 3:11 mark of the third round.

Salter (18-4 MMA, 8-1 BMMA) had little trouble with Kapel (15-7 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) as he controlled the fight from top position for most of the time. Salter landed takedowns in every round and was methodical each time on the mat. In Round 2, Salter began working for an arm-triangle choke but couldn’t pull it off.

When Round 3 began, Kapel came out aggressive, likely knowing he was down two rounds to none. But Salter again changed levels and took the fight to the mat. From there, he was back in full mount for the third time and worked on the arm-triangle, this time securing it and forcing the tap at the 3:11 mark.

The result pushed Salter’s winning streak to three, which includes wins over Costello van Steenis and Chidi Njokuani. It also was the sixth submission win of Salter’s Bellator career, tied for second in the promotion’s history.

Kapel, who spoiled Muhammed Lawal’s retirement in his previous bout, had a five-fight winning streak snapped.

Bellator 244 took place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card aired on Paramount and streamed on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.

Up-to-the-minute Bellator 244 results include:

Bellator is back in Connecticut this week, and one of its dual champions puts a title on the line at the top of the card.

Bellator 244 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Paramount following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, heavyweight and light heavyweight champion [autotag]Ryan Bader[/autotag] (27-5 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) puts his 205-pound title up against challenger [autotag]Vadim Nemkov[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 4-0 BMMA). Bader only is around a -150 favorite at the sports books, but all but one of our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts are picking him to stay champ-champ.

In the co-main event, former women’s featherweight champion [autotag]Julia Budd[/autotag] (13-3 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) for the first time since losing her belt to Cris Cyborg and takes on [autotag]Jessy Miele[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA). Budd is a 7-1 favorite and has a 13-1 lead in the picks.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Valentin Moldavsky[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) is the event’s biggest favorite at more than 9-1 against [autotag]Roy Nelson[/autotag] (23-18 MMA, 1-4 BMMA). But three of our 14 picker are taking Nelson to pull off a big upset.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Andrew Kapel[/autotag] (15-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) is an underdog to -250 favorite [autotag]John Salter[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) in their middleweight bout, but he’s got two of our 14 pickers taking him in an upset.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Bader (60 percent), Budd (91 percent), Moldavsky (75 percent) and Salter (82 percent) are the choices.

Bellator free fight: Andrew Kapel spoils Muhammed Lawal’s retirement fight with 82-second knockout

Muhammed Lawal’s retirement fight at Bellator 233 didn’t exactly go as planned – all thanks to newcomer Andrew Kapel.

[autotag]Muhammed Lawal[/autotag]’s retirement fight didn’t exactly go as planned – all thanks to [autotag]Andrew Kapel[/autotag].

A relatively unknown fighter and promotional debutant, Kapel (15-6 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) entered the cage opposite an MMA legend. Prior to their Bellator 233 showdown in November 2019, Lawal (21-10 MMA, 10-7 BMMA) had announced the fight would be his last. “King Mo” had already previously retired in early 2019 but decided to come back for one more fight.

In the span of 82 seconds, Kapel ruined Lawal’s aspirations of ending his career with a victory. After Lawal caught Kapel’s kick, the longtime MMA veteran swung for a counter hook. In the exchange, Lawal’s hook missed, but Kapel’s didn’t. Kapel floored Lawal and finished the fight with some follow up blows.

After the fight, Lawal left his gloves in the center of the cage – signaling the end of a storied 11-year career.

Check out Andrew Kapel’s knockout of Muhammed Lawal in the video above.

With another action-packed month of MMA in the books, MMA Junkie looks at the best knockouts from November 2019.

With another action-packed month of MMA in the books, MMA Junkie looks at the best knockouts from November 2019. Here are the five nominees, listed in chronological order, and winner of MMA Junkie’s “Knockout of the Month” award for November.

At the bottom of the post, let us know if we got it right by voting for your choice.

* * * *

The Nominees

Kevin Lee def. Gregor Gillespie at UFC 244

Fighting in his opponent’s home territory in New York, [autotag]Kevin Lee[/autotag] (17-5 MMA, 10-5 UFC) knocked previously unbeaten Gregor Gillespie (13-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) cold in his return to the lightweight division.

It took less than three minutes and one perfectly placed head kick for Lee to take back attention as a lightweight contender. Following some early exchanges, “The Motown Phenom” separated Gillespie from consciousness in devastating fashion.

Andrew Kapel def. Muhammed Lawal at Bellator 232

[autotag]Andrew Kapel[/autotag] (15-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) made sure it was an unhappy end to Muhammed Lawal’s (21-10 MMA, 10-7 BMMA) career, because he sent “King Mo” into retirement on a knockout loss in their 195-pound catchweight fight.

After a brief feeling out process to begin the fight, Kapel threw a body kick which Lawal caught. He went to throw a punch, but Kapel timed the perfect counter shot on him coming in. Lawal immediately went down and out, and retired following the defeat.

Magomed Ankalaev def. Dalcha Lungiambula at UFC on ESPN+ 21

[autotag]Magomed Ankalaev[/autotag] (12-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) capped off a solid performance with a highlight-reel finish when he defeated Dalcha Lungiambula (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in their light heavyweight matchup.

Ankalaev connected with a perfect front kick that made a sickening thud and instantly rocked Lungiambula. From there, the Russian unloaded a clean follow-up shot that put Lungiambula down to stop the fight in the third round.

Davy Gallon def. Ross Pearson at “MTK MMA: Probellum”

Ross Pearson (20-17) had a rude welcome back to MMA from his retirement courtesy of the unheralded [autotag]Davy Gallon[/autotag] (18-7-2), who delivered what could go down as an all-time knockout in the sport’s history.

The lightweight fight was relatively competitive for more than two rounds. In the closing stages of the third, though, Gallon went airborne and unleashed a rolling thunder kick. The heel landed flush on Pearson’s face, and “The Ultimate Fighter 9” winner was immediately knocked out in a shocking finish.

Michael Page def. Giovanni Melillo at Bellator Europe 6

[autotag]Michael Page[/autotag] (16-1 MMA, 12-1 BMMA) gave his hometown fans what they wanted as he closed the show in style against Giovanni Melillo (13-5 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) with the latest addition to his highlight reel.

Page finished late-notice replacement Melillo in less than two minutes with a thumping right hand. Melillo was out on impact, and “MVP” had the walk-off finish to close the welterweight contest.

The Winner: Davy Gallon

Pearson’s MMA return was one for the highlight reel – but not in the way he envisioned.

In his first fight in his native U.K. in over four years, Pearson headlined “MTK MMA: Probellum” in London. Taking on Gallon, Pearson was brutally knocked out in the most improbable of fashions.

As the clock wound down in the final round, Gallon threw a rolling thunder kick, which landed flush on the head of Pearson.

[lawrence-related id=464515]

Upon impact, Pearson was knocked out cold and flew backwards, crashing to the mat. The announcer’s, “Oh, sh*t” reaction sums up just how spectacular it was.

“I’ve only hit it in training,” Gallon told MMA Junkie of the knockout. “I saw a kyokushin video on YouTube, and I tried maybe once or twice in training. I was in the hotel room the day before the fight with my coach. I said, ‘Oh coach, come on. I want to try this kick.’ He told me, ‘You know it’s Ross Pearson? It’s a good guy. It’s a big fighter, you know?’ I said yeah, and he told me, ‘OK, you can try the kick. But you have to do it at the end of the fight.'”

The fight was Pearson’s first since being released by the UFC earlier this year. Prior to his UFC departure, Pearson had dropped six out of his final seven fights with the promotion.
