2023 NFL draft grades: Saints pick S Jordan Howden at No. 146 overall

2023 NFL draft grades: Saints pick Minnesota safety Jordan Howden at No. 146 overall in the fifth round, via @DillySanders

The New Orleans Saints went back to the defensive side of the ball with safety Jordan Howden out of Minnesota in the fifth round at No. 146 overall.

Howden projects as a very solid special teamer and solid tackler that’ll provide depth in the safety room and the nickel position. He’s a team captain that has a ton of playing experience, so it’s easy to see why the Saints liked him for that role.

At worst, he is definitely serviceable for a depth player. Howden had 4 career interceptions at Minnesota and 20 passes broken up. He also had 5.5 career tackles for a loss.

Grade: C

New Orleans Saints select Minnesota DB Jordan Howden in fifth round of 2023 NFL draft

New Orleans Saints select versatile Minnesota defensive back Jordan Howden in fifth round of 2023 NFL draft

The New Orleans Saints seem to pick a defensive back at some point every year, and they went with Minnesota safety Jordan Howden in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft at No. 146 overall. He should push veteran corner Bradley Roby for the starting job in the slot from his first day in training camp.

Howden was a walk-on at Minnesota but he earned opportunities for his work on special teams and became a mainstay in their secondary — he played nearly 1,400 snaps in the slot as well as 900-plus at free safety, also moving into the box on more than 600 snaps. He’s a lot like P.J. Williams, but with a stronger athletic profile with better agility scores and straight-line speed (he timed the 40-yard dash in 4.49 seconds at 5-foot-11 and 203 pounds).

Breaking down every Round 5 Saints draft pick since 2002

Breaking down every Round 5 Saints draft pick since 2002, from Mike Karney and Rob Ninkovich to Thomas Morstead and Kenny Stills:

We’re continuing our trek through New Orleans Saints draft history with a look at their picks in the fifth round under general manager Mickey Loomis, who has held his post since 2002 — making him the longest-tenured GM in the game.

And the Saints have a spotty track record in Round 5 under Loomis. Of the 20 players he’s picked in this round, only two of them have earned Pro Bowl recognition. Hopefully they can begin to reverse that trend:

Colts draft DT Eric Johnson: 3 things to know

Here are three things to know about Colts’ new DT Eric Johnson.

The Indianapolis Colts added some much-needed depth to their defensive front when they selected Missouri State defensive tackle Eric Johnson with the No. 159 overall pick.

Johnson has impressive speed for his size and has the ability to beat linemen inside. He plays similarly to Grover Stewart and is going to benefit from having DeForest Buckner to learn from.

2020 NFL Draft: Cowboys select Edge Bradlee Anae in 5th Round

The Cowboys addressed their need at defensive end by drafting Utah edge rusher Bradlee Anae with the final pick of Round 5.

The Dallas Cowboys originally had two picks in Round 5 but made their first trade of the 2020 NFL Draft by sending pick No. 164 and a fifth-round pick in 2021 to the Philadelphia Eagles and selected Wisconsin center Tyler Biadasz to address a need at center with Travis Fredrick departing in retirement.

Dallas held onto pick No. 179 and addressed a need at defensive end, selecting Utah edge rusher Bradlee Anae.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing just over 255 pounds, Anae was projected by many to be drafted somewhere between Round 3 and Round 4 but the Cowboys came out with him with the final pick of the Round 5.

Take a look at what Lance Zierlein of NFL.com says about the newest addition to the Dallas Cowboys defensive line.

“Anae’s tape tends to grow on you the more you watch with his revved-up motor and salty disposition showing up in every game. He’s fairly skilled and instinctive as an upfield rusher with a threatening upfield burst and a relatively diverse approach to climbing past tackles. He’s not a natural bender or the longest edge defender and he’s much better at attacking blockers than defending his territory against the run. He has the size, hands and strength to play standing or with a hand down, but may have a better chance of becoming a starter as a rush linebacker in a 3-4.”

The statuses of two current Cowboy defensive ends Randy Gregory and newly signed Aldon Smith remains unknown as they await the commissioner’s ruling on reinstatement into the league. The Cowboys decided to not take any chances and Anae fell into their laps at the end of Round 5.

The Cowboys have one remaining pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, No. 243 in the seventh round.
