UFC 271 medical suspensions: Derrick Lewis gets two months; two fighters out indefinitely

As a result of their UFC 271 bouts, all 28 fighters were handed medical suspensions of varying durations by the Texas commission.

Two fighters are facing indefinite suspensions as a result of their UFC 271 bouts.

UFC 271 took place Saturday at Toyota Center and featured 14 bouts, including a middleweight title rematch between champion [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] and challenger [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag].

Of the 10 main card competitors, hometown favorite Derrick Lewis received the longest suspension from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) for his upset knockout loss to Tai Tuivasa. He now faces two months on the shelf.

Two preliminary card fighters, Marcelo Rojo and Maxim Grishin, were suspended indefinitely. Unlike many other commissions, TDLR does not release injury details, so specific causes for their suspensions are not known.

On Tuesday, MMA Junkie acquired a full list of medical suspensions from MixedMartialArts.com, the official record keeper of the Association of Boxing Commissions. All fighters’ suspensions can terminate sooner should they be cleared by a doctor.

UFC 271 results: Ronnie Lawrence survives late scare, takes home decision win over gritty Mana Martinez

Ronnie Lawrence dominated the opening 10 minutes against Mana Martinez, but had to survive a furious comeback attempt to take home a win.

HOUSTON – [autotag]Ronnie Lawrence[/autotag] dominated the opening 10 minutes of his bantamweight contest with [autotag]Mana Martinez[/autotag] but had to survive a furious comeback attempt to take home a decision win.

After a wild final frame, Lawrence was awarded a unanimous call, with scores of 29-27, 29-27 and 29-28. The matchup concluded the UFC 271 early prelims on ESPN+ at Toyota Center ahead of the night’s pay-per-view main card.

Lawrence was cruising early, using pinpoint striking to score three knockdowns in the opening two rounds to go along with four takedowns, as well. The performance in the second frame was enough for him to earn 10-8 scores from two of the three cageside judges. But with Martinez down on the cards heading into the third, “Manaboi” was aggressive, doing exactly what you’d want for a fighter with nothing to lose. The gamble paid off, with spinning strikes landing clean to go along with shots down the middle, earning Martinez a pair of knockdowns in the final five minutes.

With the crowd on their feet, looking to will the hometown fighter to a thrilling comeback win, Lawrence was instead able to lean on his wrestling to slow things down and survive until the final bell, where he was awarded the decision win.

Afterward, Lawrence (8-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) admitted he was disappointed in his performance but now owns a five-fight winning streak, including a perfect mark in the octagon. Meanwhile, Martinez (9-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) sees a three-fight winning streak snapped.

Nicco Montano’s 7-pound weight miss leads to UFC on ESPN 28 fight cancellation

Nicco Montano vs. Wu Yanan was one of two fights canceled on weigh-ins day for UFC on ESPN 28.

Former women’s flyweight champion [autotag]Nicco Montano[/autotag]’s career struggles continued at the UFC on ESPN 28 official weigh-ins Friday morning.

Montano, set to make her second UFC appearance at bantamweight, weighed in seven pounds over the 136-pound limit at 143. While she stood on the scale, Montano looked physically out of sorts.

Because of the massive miss, Montano’s fight with Wu Yanan was canceled. Montano hasn’t competed since July 13, 2019 when she lost a unanimous decision to Julianna Pena in her return to bantamweight.

Montano (4-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has a history of fight cancellations. After becoming the UFC’s inaugural women’s 125-pound champ through Season 26 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Montano never got to defend her title. She was stripped of the belt after she was hospitalized because of a bad weight cut heading into a scheduled UFC 228 bout with Valentina Shevchenko. Montano recently teased a trailer on a film documenting her experience before UFC 228.

UFC on ESPN 28 marked the fourth fight cancellation since the loss to Pena in July 2019. The reasons for the other three cancellations were injury, COVID-19 and undisclosed.

Montano vs. Yanan wasn’t the only fight removed from UFC on ESPN 28. The bantamweight bout between Trevin Jones and [autotag]Ronnie Lawrence[/autotag] also was canceled after Lawrence was unable to weigh in due to health concerns.

With the cancellations, the UFC on ESPN 28 lineup now includes:

At UFC on ESPN 28, Trevin Jones and Ronnie Lawrence will square off after John Castaneda and Aaron Phillips withdrew from planned bouts.

Fighter injuries and mix-and-match bookings continue during a busy UFC schedule.

Days after [autotag]Trevin Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Aaron Phillips[/autotag] were lined up to fight at UFC on ESPN 27, the former has a new opponent on a different date. Regardless of opponent, Jones now seeks his second UFC victory after a win over Mario Bautista in March.

As for Lawrence, the Dana White’s Contender Series signee made his successful promotional debut in February, when he defeated Vince Cachero via third-round ground-and-pound stoppage. The win was his fourth in a row, overall.

With eight decisions in nine total fights on the card, clear-cut bonus winners weren’t hard to figure Saturday at UFC Fight Night 186.

But one fight stood out fairly easily among the pack for a “Fight of the Night” winner. And the lone fighter who found a finish at the event went home with an extra check, too. In a rarity, with just the one finish, the UFC gave out only one “Performance of the Night” instead of its usual two.

Below, check out the winners of $50,000 bonuses after the show at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Despite Dana White’s praise, Ronnie Lawrence gives performance a 6.5

Despite earning high praise, Ronnie Lawrence wasn’t as high on his performance as most people seemed to be.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Ronnie Lawrence[/autotag] wasn’t as high on his performance as most people seemed to be.

Lawrence (6-1) cashed in big as an underdog when he swept the judges’ scorecards against the streaking and proven finisher Jose Johnson on Tuesday at Dana White’s Contender Series 31.

The win earned him a UFC contract and had UFC president Dana White and former dual champion Daniel Cormier singing his praises for his dominant display of grappling and well-rounded skills.

But even though White called him “special,” Lawerence said he knows he has a lot more to give.

“I don’t know – I’d have to watch some tape. But like a 6.5 or something,” Lawrence told reporters, including MMA Junkie, after his win at the UFC Apex. “It’s great. Every coach that I’ve met usually have said the same thing. I felt the same way about myself. I’ve just got to get back in there and do better.”

Lawrence said he’s ready for a quick turnaround and is hoping that next time, he’s able to get a more efficient fight camp in which he’s not moving around so much to get his training in.

“I’m ready to go,” Lawrence said. “First Round Management, they’re going to get me a fight quick. We’re going to hit the gym, watch some tape, make some adjustments. This training camp was crazy. It was all over the place. I was training in multiple gyms. I wasn’t grappling a lot. It just wasn’t a great camp. The last few weeks were really good, so the next camp should be a lot better.”
