Billy Napier: ‘More work to do’ after Florida football’s win at Mississippi State

What stood out from Billy Napier’s postgame press conference after the Gators victory at Mississippi State.

Florida football got a much-needed victory on the road at Mississippi State in Week 4.

The offense was clicking on all cylinders as head coach Billy Napier made use of both Graham Mertz and DJ Lagway at the quarterback spot. The Gators were able to put up over 500 yards of total offense and scored 45 points as they beat the Bulldogs 45-28.

While the offense found its groove, the same can’t be said for the defense. Defensively, the Gators were missing tackles and not staying disciplined in the gaps.

Mississippi State had 240 rushing yards as a team on Saturday. That is not ideal and with the bye week coming up for Florida, they need to really figure out how to get that fixed. Because that is a real concern for this defense.

Overall, it was a great win for Florida and give credit to Napier for blocking out the outside noise and taking care of business on the road.

Here is what stood out from his press conference after the win against Mississippi State.

Napier talks about how the win feels

“Yeah, it’s good to win on the road in this league, it’s always tough,” Napier said. “And this can be a challenging place to play. Look, we have more work to do.

“Okay, we won today, but we are very much a work in progress. And this group can get so much better. I mean, we got so many individual players, position groups and units on our team, that we’re not even close to being who we can be – and they know that. That’s what I told them in the locker room.”

Napier on having Ron Roberts up in the box

“Yeah, I do think we got it in better, think it helped,” Napier said. “I think he did that at Auburn the last two years, and I think ultimately he and I both agreed that that would be best for the team. He has a good game day eye up there.”

Napier went on to say, “There’s, there’s pros and cons. He’s not around the players between possessions, but I do think just his ability to see it, call it quicker, get the call in, and for those guys to go play. So I think a lot of the things that we did early in the game, I think there was some benefit to that.”

Napier on the quarterback rotation

“I think you’re just evaluating how the week went, just in terms of Graham (Mertz) being back healthy. Really was impressive this week in practice, I thought he had a great week — just really sharp,” Napier said. “The ball was jumping out of his hand. And then DJ (Lagway) obviously got some great experience last week, and then we just kind of went with our gut there, kind of what we felt like was best for the team.

“We’re still committed to playing DJ (Lagway). I think today, he showed that he’ll get a little better the more experience that he gets, I think he’ll improve.”

Napier went on, saying, “So I think we’re getting the best of both worlds there. Both guys make our team better. We used DJ (Lagway)’s legs a little bit today, knowing that Graham (Mertz) was really healthy. So again, I think this is the best thing for our team. And both guys play really well.”

Napier talks about the struggles against the runs up the middle

“We got to get it fixed,” Napier said. “If you want to play really good defense, you got to be strong up the middle. It’s discouraging because it’s at the core of what you do. And I think we’ve got the personnel in there to be really good.

“And again, you got to give Mississippi State some credit, they ran it into the light box and then they threw it when we were loaded up in there so the RPO conflict was on full display today. (Jeff) Lebby’s good at that. That’s what he’s made his living doing.

“So we got to get to this stuff where maybe we can show something and change the picture a little bit. And we did that a little bit in the second half. We got to get better. There’s no question.”

Napier talks about the upcoming bye week

“Well, I think ultimately, we’re gonna take a day and get them out of the building tomorrow,” Napier said. “We have to develop practice plans that reflect the areas where we need to improve, and that’ll be the challenge on all three parts of our team.

“We’re going to get some guys back that are injured and unavailable now, which will be beneficial. But ultimately, it’s back to the basics here. We got to really take a good look at where our issues are at, at the self-scout, and then getting ready for a Power Five opponent coming to the Swamp, which will be a handful and be a challenge there.”

Up next for the Gators

The Gators will be out of action for Week 5 due to their bye week. Florida’s next opponent will be the UCF Knights on Oct. 5. The time is yet to be determined.

Florida earns RPM pick to flip 4-star LB committed to Syracuse

On3 gave the Gators an RPM pick for blue-chip linebacker Izayia Williams out of Leesburg, who is currently committed to the Syracuse Orange.

Florida football recently completed a flip of four-star defensive back [autotag]Demetres Samuel[/autotag] from an ACC school and appears to be perched to pounce on another from the same program.

Four-star linebacker Izayia Williams out of Leesburg (Florida) Tavares in the 2026 cycle is currently committed to the Syracuse Orange but has still entertained interest from elsewhere. The 6-foot-1-inch, 205-pound defender welcomed inside linebackers coach [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] to his school back in May and came away with a pleasant surprise: an offer from the Orange and Blue.

Since then, the Gators have been pushing for the rising high school junior and their efforts appear to be coming to fruition. On3’s Corey Bender gave [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and Co. a recruiting prediction machine pick for Williams on Thursday.

Justification for RPM pick

“For several months now, Williams has told Gators Online that Florida has the best shot at flipping him,” Bender begins. “That was reiterated again on Thursday and exactly a week after his latest experience in Gainesville.”

The Orange and Blue run deep with the in-state prospect and that has played a large role in favoring Florida for the flip.

“That is largely due to the Gators being Williams’ childhood-favorite program. That love for the SEC school is still very strong, with the defender saying this week he ‘grew up a Florida Gator.’ He also added that his commitment to Syracuse is currently ’50/50,’ so there is optimism in Gainesville right now.”

Florida’s flip outlook

“Going forward, Williams plans on attending Florida’s season opener against Miami,” Bender continues. “That strong level of familiarity definitely plays a factor, but linebackers coaches Ron Roberts and Cannon Gibbs are doing their job here. Williams’ relationship with them is as good as it gets.

“It’s early in the process, but the Gators are generating the most momentum with the 6-foot-1, 215-pound linebacker. The pieces are in place for a future flip.”

Recruiting Summary

Williams is ranked No. 126 overall and No. 11 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 150 and 13, respectively.

‘They were completely disheveled.’ Anonymous coaches share harsh criticisms of Auburn football

Auburn football has its critics, especially coaches within the SEC.

College football preseason publications are a great way for fans to read up on their favorite teams, and rivals, ahead of an exciting season.

It also provides an outlet for coaches to share their most heated opinions while remaining incognito.

Anonymous coaches were asked to share their hottest takes on SEC programs with Lindy’s Sports, and the best were included in the publication’s 2024 Southeastern preview. While Lindy’s Sports does not disclose if their sources are current coaches or multiple coaches, Auburn’s report was… harsh.

One criticism was at the expense of Auburn’s 2023 season finale, a 31-13 Music City Bowl loss to Maryland. The Tigers fell behind 21-0 in the 1st quarter, and were out-gained by just 10 yards. This source credits the team’s number of bowl game opt outs as the reason for Auburn’s poor showing in Nashville.

“I saw Auburn play in a bowl game and it was the least talented Auburn team I’ve seen in 50 years. They were awful. They lost a lot of kids before the game, a lot opted out. But they were completely disheveled.”

Just one week after losing 31-10 to New Mexico State, Auburn football had the opportunity to take down No. 8 Alabama and to erase their chances of earning a College Football Playoff bid. The game ended on a heartbreaking 4th-and-31 hail mary play from Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe to wide receiver Isaiah Bond. Auburn left plenty of momentum on the table in the game, and one coach says that the Tigers will move forward without former defensive coordinator [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag].

“You’re Auburn in a down year. Alabama is a College Football Playoff team. You’ve got them beat, it’s 4th-and-31 and you lose. That should never happen. It’s got to be the worst play in college football, except maybe Cal scoring against Stanford with the band on the field. The best thing Auburn did was get rid of Ron Roberts.”

The last take centers around [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag]. Thorne had a disappointing 2023 season after passing for just 1,755 yards and 16 touchdowns. Auburn has added a plethora of talented wide receivers to its roster, but one coach feels that the team can not reach success with Thorne as its starting quarterback.

“You need a dynamic guy like Cam Newton to run your offense or one of those guys Auburn had in the past. Payton Thorne ain’t going to lead you to the promised land. He’s an average player.”

Auburn football looks to improve upon its 6-7 campaign in 2024. This season will feature several enhancements such as transfers [autotag]Robert Lewis[/autotag], [autotag]KeAndre Lambert-Smith[/autotag], and [autotag]Jerrin Thompson[/autotag]. Not only will Auburn try to improve its record, but they will also try to change the opinions of opposing coaches across the SEC.

Four-star IMG Academy recruit gets live look at new Florida LB coach

Four-star IMG Academy linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng visited UF recently and got a live look at the Gators’ new linebackers coach.

Like any serious recruit, IMG Academy linebacker [autotag]Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng[/autotag] wants to know more about the coaches in place to develop him at the universities he’s still considering.

At the University of Florida, that would be Ron Roberts, who the football program hired as an executive head coach, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach over the offseason. Owusu-Boateng visited the Swamp for one of Roberts’ first weekend of spring practices.

The experience was an eye-opening one for the linebacker, according to Swamp247.

“I was seeing the way Coach Roberts does things with his linebackers,” Owusu-Boateng said to Swamp247. “Not only that, but seeing the way he interacts and the way they interact with him as well. It tells me a lot just about his coaching or about his leadership, and how he sees his linebackers being fit for the scheme he has for them.”

Owusu-Boateng got a chance to see where he’d fit in Florida’s scheme and how those practices would run. Should he sign with UF, Owusu-Boatgeng is likely to spend time at both the MIKE and WILL linebacker positions in Gainesville.

A return visit isn’t on the books just yet, but an official visit might be in the works. Right now, he has summer dates locked in with Georgia, Stanford and South Carolina. An official visit to Florida might have to wait until the season begins.

Owusu-Boateng is a consensus four-star recruit ranked the highest by Rivals.com at No. 24 overall in the class of 2025. The On3 industry ranking, which considers all four major services, puts him at No. 59 nationally and No. 5 among linebackers in the class.

DJ Durkin emerges as a candidate for Auburn’s defensive coordinator job

Durkin has several years of experience working in the SEC, most recently with Texas A&M.

Auburn may be on the verge of adding a defensive coordinator with SEC experience.

According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, former Texas A&M defensive coordinator [autotag]DJ Durkin[/autotag] has become a target to replace [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] on Auburn’s staff. If hired, Durkin would split defensive coordinator duties with [autotag]Charles Kelly[/autotag], who returns to his alma mater after most recently spending a season on Deion Sanders’ staff at Colorado.

Under Durkin’s leadership, Texas A&M has posted a top-five defensive within the SEC over the last two seasons. The Aggies ended the 2023 season with the conference’s fifth-best defense, allowing 22.1 points and 316.2 yards per contest. Texas A&M’s defense was considered to be better than Ole Miss, South Carolina, and LSU last season.

Before his time in College Station, Durkin was defensive coordinator for Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The Rebels’ defense progressed in his two seasons, moving from No. 14 in the SEC in 2020 to No. 8 in 2021. He also served as defensive coordinator at Florida from 2013-14, where he coached the Gators’ defense to a No. 3 ranking in the SEC in 2013. In between stops in SEC country, Durkin led the Maryland Terrapins as head coach from 2016-18, where he failed to win more than six games during his stay.

Head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] has added three assistant coaches to his staff since the end of the 2023 season. Joining Kelly is [autotag]Derrick Nix[/autotag], who joins Auburn’s staff as offensive coordinator and running backs coach after spending 16 seasons at Ole Miss. Freeze has also promoted [autotag]Kent Austin[/autotag] to quarterbacks coach after he spent last season as an assistant to Freeze.

Florida football makes new co-defensive coordinator hire official

The new executive defensive coach hire is now official as of Tuesday!

Billy Napier and the Florida football program officially welcomed [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] on Tuesday as the executive head coach for defense, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the Gators in 2024.

The 31-year coaching veteran had more recently worked with Napier for two seasons with the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns from 2018-19 before moving on to the defensive coordinator position with the Baylor Bears from 2020-22. He was also the Auburn Tigers‘ defensive coordinator in 2023, heading a corps that finished ranked 21st in defensive efficiency per ESPN’s Football Power Index.

“We are excited to add one of the best football minds in all of college football to our staff in Ron Roberts,” Napier said in the press release. “Ron is a great teacher and leader, and he has consistently produced and developed quality defensive players and units. His familiarity with our process and veteran experience as a coordinator and head coach will be great for the staff. It’s my honor to welcome him and his wife, Didi, to Gator Nation.”

The feeling was more than mutual from Roberts’ side.

“I’m thrilled to rejoin coach Napier and his staff, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of Gator Nation,” he responded, according to Swamp247. “I’m excited and ready to get to work.”

Current defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong spent 2018 working as a graduate assistant with the Ragin’ Cajuns and has stated in the past that Roberts was a key influence during Armstrong’s young career.

Zac Etheridge departs Auburn, expected to be hired at Houston

Etheridge resigns after spending three seasons on his alma mater’s staff.

The Auburn coaching staff continues to see shake-up as the offseason heats up.

Late Thursday, Auburn associate head coach and running backs coach Cadillac Williams announced his resignation from the staff to “explore other opportunities.” Early Friday, another alum followed suit.

[autotag]Zac Etheridge[/autotag], a former Auburn defensive back who spent three seasons on Auburn’s staff, also announced his resignation via X (formerly Twitter). Matt Zenitz of 247Sports has reported that Etheridge’s next move will be joining the staff at the University of Houston.

Auburn head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] released a statement Friday to show gratitude for Etheridge’s service to Auburn’s staff.

“Auburn football would like to thank Zac for his contributions to the program the last three years. He played a vital role in establishing the foundation of the future. Zac is a relentless recruiter and tireless worker who has a bright future in this profession. I look forward to watching his career develop and wish him nothing but the best.”

Etheridge joined Auburn’s staff in 2021 as part of [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag]’s first staff. He was retained by Freeze and continued his role as defensive backs coach for the 2023 season. It was announced on Dec. 30 that Charles Kelly was hired to serve as co-defensive coordinator with an expected role working with defensive backs. Since then, both defensive backs coaches from the 2023 staff, [autotag]Wesley McGriff[/autotag] and Zac Etheridge, have both departed.

In addition to his on-field role, Etheridge was known as an elite recruiter. Etheridge played a role in Auburn landing four-star talent such as [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag] and [autotag]Robert Woodyard[/autotag]. He was also the primary recruiter for current commits [autotag]Antonio Coleman[/autotag], [autotag]Kendarius Reddick[/autotag], and [autotag]JaKaleb Faulk[/autotag].

Etheridge’s departure is the fifth move of the offseason for Auburn’s coaching staff. Offensive coordinator [autotag]Philip Montgomery[/autotag], defensive coordinator [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag], defensive backs coach Wesley McGriff, and running backs coach Cadillac Williams have also departed the staff.

Cadillac Williams resigns from position as Auburn’s associate head coach

The former Auburn running back resigns after spending five seasons as an assistant coach under three different head coaches.

The latest move regarding Auburn’s coaching staff involves a program legend.

[autotag]Cadillac Williams[/autotag], who played for Auburn from 2001-04 and served as an assistant coach for his alma mater over the last five seasons, resigned from his position as associate head coach and running backs coach late Thursday evening.

Williams shared his reasoning for the move in a press release. He says that he is looking to pursue other opportunities.

“After taking time to pray and reflect, I have made the decision to resign from my position with Auburn football to pursue other opportunities. I love Auburn, the players and AU family with all my heart, but this decision is what is best for me, my wife and sons. I am extremely grateful for the coaching opportunity given to me first by Coach Malzahn and most recently by Coach Freeze. These past five years on the Plains have been nothing short of incredible. Auburn is and always will be a special part of my life.”

War Eagle!

Williams first joined Auburn’s football staff during the 2019 season under head coach [autotag]Gus Malzahn[/autotag], and would go on to serve on the staffs of [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] and [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]. Following the firing of Harsin during the 2022 season, Williams was named interim head coach. During his time as interim, Williams led the Tigers to a 2-2 record which included an emotional home win over Texas A&M.

Williams is also known as an effective recruiter, as he played a role in landing running backs [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag], [autotag]Damari Alston[/autotag], and [autotag]Jeremiah Cobb[/autotag]. He was also the primary recruiter for offensive linemen [autotag]Clay Wedin[/autotag] and [autotag]Bradyn Joiner[/autotag].

Williams’ resignation marks the fourth assistant coach to leave the staff since the offseason began. Defensive coordinator [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] is now a member of the staff at Florida while defensive backs coach [autotag]Wesley McGriff[/autotag] has joined Mike Elko’s staff at Texas A&M. Auburn has also parted ways with offensive coordinator [autotag]Philip Montgomery[/autotag].

USA TODAY Sports grades Auburn’s 2023 season

How would you have graded Auburn’s 2023 season?

The 2023 college football season is officially over, with the Michan Wolverine standing atop the sport as the national champions.

With the season over, Paul Myerberg of USA Today Sports decided to look back at how all 133 FBS teams performed and handed out grades to each program. He graded on a curve, based in part on preseason expectations, in-season performance and considered any special circumstances, such as injuries or big wins.

Myerberg handed the Auburn Tigers a C- in [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]’s first season on the Plains. While Auburn didn’t enter the season with high expectations, they ended the season on a three-game losing streak and fell to 6-7.

The Tigers performed well against rivals Alabama and Georgia but were crushed by LSU and Texas A&M on the road. They also suffered one of the worst losses in program history, getting demolished by New Mexico State inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.

In response to the disappointing ending, Freeze has shaken up the coaching staff, firing offensive coordinator [autotag]Philip Montgomery[/autotag] and watched defensive coordinator [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] leave to take a job at Florida. Auburn has not yet announced a replacement for either coordinator but Freeze is expected to take over play calling duties for the offense in 2024.

Gators hire new defensive coach from another SEC program

The Florida Gators filled it final void on the coaching staff with the hiring of former Auburn Tigers defensive coordinator

Florida football will add another member to the sidelines after making a hire to fill three different coaching positions.

According to 247Sports, former Auburn Tigers defensive coordinator [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] is expected to be added to the Florida staff as the executive head coach for defense, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Florida head coach Billy Napier’s staff is now filled to the brim with 10 men and Roberts is another member of Napier’s past, rooting back to his tenure with the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.

Roberts worked with Napier for two seasons before taking the defensive coordinator position with the Baylor Bears from 2020-22 and then Auburn the following season.

Current UF defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong spent 2018 working as a graduate assistant and has stated in the past that Roberts was a key influence during Armstrong’s young career.

The Gators will continue to rebuild its program from the ground up before the start of spring practices. Many coaches have been hired and players are being brought in from the transfer portal.
