NFC East news: Commanders hire Cowboys DC Dan Quinn as new head coach

The Washington Commanders are hiring DC Dan Quinn away from the Dallas Cowboys as their new head coach after firing Ron Rivera

The Washington Commanders have a new head coach, poaching Dan Quinn away from the Dallas Cowboys as Josh Harris made his first hire as owner in D.C.

The Commanders announced the Quinn hiring on Thursday morning, completing the 2024 NFL coaching cycle after the Baltimore Ravens hired Mike Macdonald on Wednesday night.

Washington hired Adam Peters as general manager on Jan. 12. The moves represent the first onfield steps to moving on from Dan Snyder and his toxic regime.

Quinn served as Dallas’ defensive coordinator for the past three seasons, and during that stint, the Cowboys ranked a combined fifth in points and seventh in yards. Under Quinn, the Cowboys led the NFL with 93 forced turnovers.

Quinn now gets a redo after previously having mixed results as Atlanta’s’ head coach from 2015 to 2020, taking the Falcons to the Super Bowl after the 2016 season, when they lost to the New England Patriots in overtime — after blowing a 28-3 lead.

He finished his Falcons stint 43-42 overall and 3-2 in the postseason.

The Commanders finished 4-13 in 2023 but will enter the offseason with momentum as they own the No. 2 pick in the 2024 draft and five picks in the top 100.

According to Over The Cap, they also have approximately $70 million in available cap space.

Eagles to interview Ron Rivera for vacant defensive coordinator position

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to interview former Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera for their vacant defensive coordinator position

Ron Rivera has had recent success in slowing down the Philadelphia offense.

After being fired by Washington, the long-time coach will interview for the Eagles’ vacant defensive coordinator job.

After being relieved of his duties in Washington, Rivera told reporters that it would not be difficult to return to being a defensive coordinator again after spending years as the top guy. He last served as a coordinator with the Chargers from 2008 to ’10 before taking over as the Panthers’ head coach.

He also was the Chargers’ linebackers coach in 2007 — after serving as the Bears’ defensive coordinator the previous three seasons.

The Commanders Wire recently looked at Rivera’s previous success during his seven seasons as a coordinator.

  • 2004: No. 12 total defense, No. 13 scoring defense
  • 2005: No. 2 total defense, No. 1 scoring defense
  • 2006: No. 5 total defense, No. 3 scoring defense
  • 2007: No. 14 total defense, No. 5 scoring defense (DC for part of the season after Chargers fired Ted Cottrell)
  • 2008: No. 25 total defense, No. 15 scoring defense
  • 2009: No. 16 total defense, No. 11 scoring defense
  • 2010: No. 1 total defense, No. 10 scoring defense

Rivera has been a head coach for 13 years, compiling a 102-103-2 record. He was 26-40-1 in Washington, including 4-13 this past season. Washington won the NFC East in his first season but did not finish with a winning record during his four years.

Panthers have requested to interview Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby

Carolina Panthers have requested to interview Philadelphia Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby for General Manager job

The Eagles have one of the NFL’s most innovative and analytical front offices, and teams follow that blueprint.

After losing Ian Cunningham to the Bears, Brandon Brown to the Giants, Catherine Raiche to the Browns, and Andy Weidl to the Steelers, Philadelphia could lose Alec Halaby.

After cleaning the house, Carolina has requested an interview with Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby for their vacant GM position, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.

Halaby was promoted to Eagles assistant general manager in 2022 after spending six seasons as the team’s vice president of football operations.

Roseman restructured the front office after losing so many understudies.

In the Eagles’ current setup, Halaby shares the assistant GM title with former VP of football operations and compliance Jon Ferrari.

An analytical genius, Halaby is versatile and has quickly climbed the ranks in Philadelphia.

Washington Commanders fire Ron Rivera, add NBA personnel genius to staff

The Washington Commanders have fired head coach Ron Rivera and added NBA personnel legend Bob Myers to the staff. May you live in interesting times.

The Washington Commanders made one of the NFL’s least-surprising moves on Monday morning, and then, they made one of the most interesting.

Head coach Ron Rivera, who bottomed out at 4-13 this season, went 26-40-1 over four seasons, and presided over one of the NFL’s worst defenses, was relieved of his duties on Monday. Rivera had been at the top of everybody’s “soon-to-be-fired” list through most of the season, and that came to pass.

Then, the Commanders under new owner Josh Harris added NBA personnel legend to their organization.

It’s an interesting time for the Commanders, who are finally free of the Dan Snyder stench, and have effective cap space of $63,806,242 for the 2024 season. Rivera’s former job should be quite a bit more attractive than it was in previous years.

Panthers fans react to Ron Rivera’s firing on Twitter

Here’s how Panthers fans are reacting to the news of Rivera’s firing on Twitter.

Panthers fans knew today’s news was coming. Head coach Ron Rivera’s days were numbered ever since the team got blown out against the 49ers, which began a slide that’s now extended to five losses in the last six games. Rivera’s failures go back farther than that, though. His mismanagement of Cam Newton’s shoulder and foot injuries alone was grounds enough for Carolina to make a change.

Rivera was the most successful coach in franchise history. It’s obvious that it was a time for a change, though. It’s also clear he leaves behind a log of good will.

Here’s how Panthers fans are reacting to the news of Rivera’s firing on Twitter.

We wish Rivera the best in his future endeavors. He will almost certainly get another NFL coaching gig if he wants one – perhaps most likely as a defensive coordinator.
