Colts activate 3 players from COVID-19 list among slew of roster moves

The Colts made a slew of roster moves, including the activation of 3 players from the COVID-19 list.

The Indianapolis Colts activated three players from the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Friday.

The three players who remained on the list were cornerback Xavier Rhodes, defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad and offensive tackle Julién Davenport.

Rhodes and Muhammad were among the first players to be placed on the reserve list when camp opened in late July. They haven’t logged a practice to date. Davenport was put on the list a day or two after practice started at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield.

The Colts no longer have any players on the reserve/COVID-19 list as it stands.

Rhodes should be put right back in as CB1 on the boundary while Muhammad will have to compete in the defensive end room, which won’t be as easy with Ben Banogu and others showing out. Davenport is likely to join the left tackle competition alongside Will Holden and Sam Tevi.

The Colts also announced Friday that they placed wide receiver J.J. Nelson on the injured reserve list, and they waived safety Rolan Milligan and quarterback Jalen Morton.

Colts’ Skai Moore, Rolan Milligan intend to return after 2020 opt out

Colts get some more depth.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Skai Moore and safety Rolan Milligan intend to return to the team after opting out of the 2020 season.

This completes the trio of players who opted out for the season due to COVID-19 concerns. The other was cornerback Marvell Tell, who opted out following his rookie campaign.

But now, the Colts are set to have both Moore and Milligan back on the roster for the 2021 season.

Both Moore and Milligan would hold depth roles if the Colts decide to keep them. Moore signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and has worked mostly on the practice squad during his time with the team.

Milligan held a bigger role as a rotational piece in the safety room, playing 11 games in 2019.

Colts have two more players opt out of 2020 season

Two more Colts opt out.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich told the media Wednesday on a conference call that cornerback Marvell Tell III and safety Rolan Milligan are opting out of the 2020 season.

Tell and Milligan are the second and third Colts players to opt out after linebacker Skai Moore informed the team on Tuesday. Reich said he doesn’t expect anymore opt outs before the Thursday deadline but also admits the situation is very fluid.

These opt outs are a bit more significant as both Tell and Milligan held a depth role in the secondary. Tell was expected to provide depth on the boundary behind Rock Ya-Sin and Xavier Rhodes while Milligan was expected to work in the safety rotation as well as on special teams.

It will be interesting to see what kind of moves the Colts make to replace these two players in the secondary, but these are not insignificant for a position that was already thin.

Colts’ Rolan Milligan signs ERFA tender

Rolan Milligan signed his tender.

Indianapolis Colts safety Rolan Milligan signed his exclusive rights free agent tender, the team announced Saturday.

Being an exclusive rights free agent, Milligan had now negotiating power. Because the team applied the tender to him this offseason, he could sign the one-year deal or sit out the 2020 season—unless the Colts rescinded the tender.

The ERFA tender is worth $675,000 but it isn’t guaranteed. So if the Colts wind up cutting him down the road in training camp or the preseason, Milligan isn’t owed any money.

Milligan didn’t hold a major role for the Colts in 2019. He was used sparingly as a depth safety, working mostly in the slot when on defense. He saw more snaps on special teams in 2019 than he did on the defensive side of the ball.

With Khari Willis and Malik Hooker starting, Milligan and George Odum will be the depth pieces until the Colts add another body to the room.

The Colts are also awaiting the official signing of wide receiver Daurice Fountain, who also was a tendered exclusive rights free agent.

Colts to tender ERFA S Rolan Milligan

Rolan Milligan returns as an ERFA.

Most of the news surrounding the Indianapolis Colts on Monday was in regards to the blockbuster trade they made to bring in DT DeForest Buckner, but they also did some smaller roster moves.

Among those moves included applying a tender to exclusive rights free agent safety Rolan Milligan. With the tender applied, Milligan has to sign the contract and cannot talk to any other teams.

Milligan isn’t used heavily on the defensive side of the ball. Most of his work came on special teams. He played just 13% of the defensive snaps and 39% of the special teams snaps for the Colts during the 2019 season.

The Colts have their duo of starting safeties in Khari Willis and Malik Hooker. Milligan mostly will provide back-end depth and special teams help for Indy.

Colts sign CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun

Colts add to the secondary.

The Indianapolis Colts signed cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun and placed defensive back Rolan Milligan on the injured reserve list, the team announced Wednesday.

Boddy-Calhoun got his start in the NFL as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016. He has also spent time with the Cleveland Browns (2016-18) and Houston Texans (2019).

In 44 career games (21 starts), Boddy-Calhoun has recorded 133 tackles (105 solo), 19 passes defended and three interceptions.

Milligan suffered a foot injury against the New Orleans Saints and was placed on the injured reserve.

Colts’ Rolan Milligan (foot) ruled OUT vs. Saints

Rolan Milligan won’t return.

Indianapolis Colts safety Rolan Milligan suffered a foot injury on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints and has been ruled out for the remainder of the game.

It isn’t clear when Milligan injured his foot but it happened some time in the second quarter. It also isn’t clear how severe the injury is for Milligan, who has been working in a depth role in the safety room.

Without Milligan, the Colts will have Malik Hooker, Clayton Geathers, George Odum and Khari Willis available.
