Former Washington OT Roger Rosengarten scheduled for top-30 visit with Texans

A former Pac-12 champion will soon visit NRG Stadium and the Houston Texans.

Roger Rosengarten is returning to NRG Stadium for the first time since the national championship.

Rosengarten, a two-year starter at Washington, will visit the Houston Texans as part of a top-30 visit, according to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo.

Last season, Rosengarten was an anchor at right tackle for the Joe Moore Award-winning offensive line that claimed its first Pac-12 title in six years. During his two seasons in Seattle, the 6-foot-6 lineman allowed just five quarterbacks and 27 hurries.

Rosengarten did not allow a sack in two years, factoring into back-to-back Heisman-caliber seasons from potential first-round pick Michael Penix Jr.

An expected mid-round selection, Rosengarten impressed last month at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. He posted the fastest 40-time among offensive linemen at 4.92 seconds and finished top 20 in the 20-yard shuttle (4.60) and the broad jump (9-foot-2).

Starting tackle isn’t a concern for Houston with the return of All-Pro Laremy Tunsil and a healthy Tytus Howard. Depth, however, remains a concern following George Fant and Josh Jones’ departure this offseason.

While Rosengarten only played right tackle at Washington, that might mean little since Houston brought back swing tackle Charlie Heck on a one-year deal. Instead of having both tackles learn each spot, Heck would only replace Tunsil while Rosengarten takes on reps behind Howard.

The Texans own nine picks in the draft starting April 25, including three in the second and third rounds.

49ers flirt with disaster in Mel Kiper Jr. mock draft

The #49ers flirt with disaster in Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft.

The 49ers are in a tough spot in this year’s draft. They’ll enter the draft with offensive tackle atop their list of needs, and they’ll be picking at No. 31 overall where the best of the sizable crop of strong offensive tackle prospects will likely be gone. A trade up may be difficult to execute as well given how much demand there’ll be for the best of this year’s OT class.

One route they could take if a trade isn’t available is trying to find a gem with a couple of high-upside Day 2 and 3 selections. They could also reach for a player at No. 31 overall, which is what they do in Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest mock draft. The result in this situation could be disastrous.

Kiper, as is typical, has the best OT prospects going ahead of the 49ers’ slot at the end of the first round. There are a couple of OTs projected to go late in the first or early in the second round who have been mocked to San Francisco. A couple defenders have been sent to them as well. Instead of doing that, Kiper sends them Washington offensive tackle Roger Rosengarten.

There’s the potential that Rosengarten develops into a starting-caliber tackle. He’s coming off a couple good years as a starter where he shined more as a pass blocker than a run blocker. There’s definitely some necessary development though.

Rosengartner doesn’t have great size at 6-5, 308 pounds. He’s also not a particularly good athlete. The 49ers in Kyle Shanahan’s system need their offensive tackles to be effective run blockers who can get out and move. That doesn’t show up a ton for Rosengartner in college and his athletic profile doesn’t necessarily indicate there’s enough upside for him to develop into a starter in this particular offense.

Taking an OT who may not even start Year 1 would be a tough pill for the 49ers to swallow given the size of their need at that spot. A complete whiff where Rosengartner never becomes more than a reserve offensive lineman would be a disaster for a San Francisco club that wants to extend its Super Bowl window.

The 49ers need an upgrade at RT this year, and ideally would have that player credibly flip to the left side when Trent Williams eventually retires. Rosengartner, as a prospect, doesn’t appear to fit that mold. Taking him on Day 2 would be palatable, but given the 49ers’ struggles with finding talent in Round 1 and a potential exodus of top-end talent in the coming years, the team needs to nail its first-round pick this year.

Finding a good player at any position is a far bigger priority than reaching for an OT just to check that box.

Vikings 2024 7 round mock draft 5.0: Drafting to win in 2024

What would a Minnesota Vikings 2024 NFL mock draft look like if they wanted to win next year? Tyler Forness takes an in-depth look.

The Minnesota Vikings have a lot of different ways they can go in the NFL draft. There will be some discussion on what needs are most important but the Vikings can address most of them through both free agency and the NFL draft.

Each week throughout the leadup to the NFL draft, I will be doing different seven-round mock drafts for the Vikings as a way to explore different scenarios. You never know who might fall to you and how that could cause a ripple effect and being ready for those situations is paramount come draft weekend.

In the second rendition of our seven-round mock draft series, what could a draft look like that has the Vikings drafted to win in 2024?

Cowboys Mock Draft: Finding Prescott’s successor, refreshing OL, LB, RB

In our latest mock draft, several trades put Dallas in a position to nab the heir apparent while also selecting a couple big-time program duos. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The biggest decision the Dallas Cowboys have to make this offeason is just how much they want to tie the foreseeable future to quarterback Dak Prescott. With eight seasons under his belt, Prescott is reaching the point of his career where the lack of playoff success for the organization has become a part of his personal narrative. Whether or not the club believes they can win with him directing the pirate ship or not, leads them to six options.

Only one option with Prescott, although it is by far the most likely conclusion, results in Dallas not drafting a successor in the next two drafts. That’s a multi-year extension. So in that vein, and knowing we have a dozen mocks to play with between now and the actual draft, playing out that scenario and seeing what the entire haul would look like is going to be our focus.

In this iteration, Dallas accepts a trade-back offer to ensure they have the same number of top-100 picks going to their other needs as well as a franchise QB successor.

List of National team offensive linemen at 2024 Senior Bowl

List of National team offensive linemen at 2024 Senior Bowl

As we continue getting a quick look at the Senior Bowl players this year, we now check out the offensive linemen for the National team. With offensive line a major need for the Jets this offseason, this group could be heavily focused on by general manager Joe Douglas and company. A good week in Mobile for these guys will go a long way toward deciding where and when they will ultimately get drafted.

Included in this group is a name already tagged as potential option at No. 10 for the Jets, Oregon State offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga. He has a chance to really stand out this week and solidify his standing among the top offensive tackles in this class.

Coaching the National team offensive line this year are Chris Cook of the Cardinals and Jim Dray of the Bears.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 97, Washington OT Roger Rosengarten

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is Washington offensive tackle Roger Rosengarten.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2024 NFL draft.

Death, taxes, and the Green Bay Packers turning Day 3 offensive linemen into high-quality starters. David Bakhtiari, Josh Sitton, TJ Lang, Corey Linsley, and JC Tretter are just some of the names of Day 3 offensive linemen who have found success at 1265 Lombardi Avenue.

Zach Tom, a former fourth-round pick, has turned into one of the best right tackles in the league. Rasheed Walker, a former seventh-round pick, has played well enough at left tackle to give the team hope he could replace Bakhtiari if the Packers opt to move on from the veteran tackle this offseason.

Tom and Walker both could be the future bookends for the Packers, alleviating pressure to address the position early in the 2024 NFL Draft.

A player that Brian Gutekunst could target on Day 3 of the 2024 NFL Draft is Roger Rosengarten. The Washington offensive tackle checks in at No. 97 in the Unpacking Future Packers Countdown.

Rosengarten, a Colorado native who played for former NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffery at Valor Christian, ended his career at Washington with 28 starts at right tackle protecting the blind side of Michael Penix Jr.

“Roger has been a huge part of the Washington offensive line,” Roman Tomashoff, a UW writer for SI.com, said. “He was excellent all year long and has been rock solid as Penix’s blindside protector for the last two seasons.”

Rosengarten has agile feet and the lateral quickness to mirror edge rushers. He’s coordinated in his shuffle. He has a strong upper body to stonewall pass rushers and stays balanced through contact. During his 28 starts at right tackle, Rosengarten gave up zero sacks and 32 pressures.

“He moves his feet very well and has received elite coaching from Scott Huff,” Tomashoff said. “He is an excellent athlete who can mirror and counter pass rushers with ease.”

Rosengarten is comfortable on the move and doesn’t labor climbing to the second level. He has a high football IQ and understands angles. While not a mauler by any means, Rosengarten hits his marks on the move and helps seal running lanes.

“Roger is a fantastic run blocker,” Tomashoff said. “He does a great job when he’s asked to pull in the run game and finishes blocks very well I believe he needs to add a few more pounds when he gets to the NFL, but he finishes strong and is someone that NFL coaches should be confident in when he’s asked to lead the way on off-tackle runs.”

Fit with the Packers

Nobody knows exactly what the Packers are going to do with Bakhtiari. They could save some money by parting ways with the veteran left tackle. However, if they feel he can give them even 12 games, they may think it’s worth keeping him around because there is no denying when he’s on the field he’s one of the best left tackles in the game.

If they opt to part ways with Bakhtiari, they’d have to feel comfortable going into next season with Walker at left tackle and Tom at right tackle. The question becomes, who is the swing tackle?

Rosengarten could be the target on Day 3. He played exclusively right tackle at Washington, with just three career snaps at left tackle.

“He can definitely make the move to left tackle if asked,” Tomashoff said. “He probably would have played on the left side for a lot of other teams, but with the left-handed Penix he was needed a little more on the right side. Roger is very coordinated and would definitely excel on the left side.”

Given Tom’s versatility, maybe the Packers view his best long-term position at center or guard. If they take a player like Rosengarten they could kick Tom inside to right guard. Regardless of what happens the Packers will need to add depth to the offensive tackle room. With his athleticism and length, Rosengarten has the tools to develop into a pillar along the Great Wall of Lambeau.  If he works his way into the starting lineup as a rookie, he may not give the job back.

“Roger is the full package as a tackle,” Tomashoff said. “He has a lot of upside, excellent movement skills, power, and technique. He’s a very mature guy that could certainly develop into a fantastic leader at the NFL level.”
