Florida football’s Rocco Underwood wins 2024 Mannelly Award

Gators’ Rocco Underwood has won the Mannelly Award, an honor given to the nation’s top long snapper.

In a season marked by standout performances, Florida football long snapper Rocco Underwood has risen above the rest to claim the prestigious 2024 Mannelly Award, an honor bestowed annually to the nation’s top collegiate long snapper.

Underwood, who has been a cornerstone of reliability for the Gators’ special teams, played a pivotal role in Florida’s kicking game. His precision in snapping not only enhanced the efficiency of field goals and extra points but also significantly impacted the success of punts.

This contributed to the Gators’ special teams’ status among the best of the best in the SEC this season.

The Mannelly Award, named after Patrick Mannelly, the former long-time NFL long snapper for the Chicago Bears, is considered the highest accolade a collegiate long snapper can achieve.

Underwood’s recognition is a testament to his hard work, consistency and the critical role he plays in the dynamics of the game.

The redshirt junior out of Lake Mary, Florida, is in his fourth season with the Gators and was named AFCA Second-Team All-American and All-SEC Second Team this year. Standing at 6-foot-3-inches and weighing in at 228 pounds, the long-snapper played 103 snaps and recorded three total tackles this season.

Three instant takeaways from Florida’s blowout win over FSU

It wasn’t the most efficient night for Florida’s offense, but a stout defensive performance led the Gators to an easy victory of Florida State.

Florida capped off its regular season with a third-straight win Saturday night, a 31-11 victory over the Florida State Seminoles that was never truly in doubt.

If there was a game that Florida could afford to be sloppy in this season, it was this one. [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag] started off the game slow and his receivers didn’t help him out too much, either. Fortunately, the running backs came up big, combining for 223 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries. It’s only the second time this year that Florida has gone over 200 yards rushing, with Montrell Johnson Jr. battling injuries for much of the year.

The defense also continued its dominant run through November by bulldozing through Florida State’s offensive line and getting to the quarterback eight times. The Seminoles fumbled seven times and never had a shot with that kind of turnover margin.

PLANT THE FLAG!

Fumblerooski

Okay, the fumblerooski is a trick play and FSU certainly did not have many tricks in their bag against Florida, but it’s fun to say and the Gators forced eight fumbles on the night, recovering five.

Florida’s defensive front started off the year rough, but that unit has been the key over the past month. Creating pressure against a true freshman quarterback who likes to take off is a tried and true recipe for manifesting havoc, and that’s exactly what happened Saturday night.

Eight sacks, 14 tackles for loss and just one touchdown allowed. What a night for the defense.

Shout out to long snapper [autotag]Rocco Underwood[/autotag] for getting downfield and recovering a muffed punt on special teams, too.

Lagway a bit off, RBs clean up

This was not DJ Lagway’s best game, but the Gators didn’t need it to be to get the win. Getting [autotag]Montrell Johnson Jr[/autotag]. back has been huge, and both [autotag]Jadan Baugh[/autotag] and [autotag]Ja’Kobi Jackson[/autotag] are still doing just fine.

It’s only right for the guy who came over with Billy Napier and returned for his senior year despite being a draft prospect to get the lion’s share of important carries, and Johnson made the most of his 10 against Florida State with 99 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.

In fact, Johnson ran so well that Napier could afford to spread the love and get Baugh and Jackson 10 or more carries. Baugh ran it enough late to creep up to 81 yards and led the room with 11 carries. All three rushers finished the night with more than five yards per carry — Johnson at 9.9, Baugh at 7.4 and Jackson at 5.1.

The running backs room in Gainesville is loaded with talent, and everyone but Johnson will be back next season.

Not the best night for Florida receivers

Florida’s passing attack suffered throughout the game, but it’s not all on the quarterback. Yes, Lagway was a bit off, but the bulk of the incompletions tonight can be put on the receivers. Several players dropped balls that hit their hands, and that can’t happen in a rivalry game.

Lagway’s lone interception is a result of a miscommunication by the receivers, too. Veteran guys like [autotag]Elijhah Badger[/autotag], [autotag]Chimere Dike[/autotag] and even Marcus Burke are supposed to make things easier for a true freshman, but Lagway didn’t get much help from them.

Badger and Dike get a pass because they’ve been solid for most of the season, though. It was just a rough night for that group.

Final injury report for Florida football vs. Kentucky Week 8

Montrell Johnson Jr. highlights a list of key players the Gators will be without against Kentucky Week 8.

Florida football hosts the Kentucky Wildcats in just a matter of minutes and the Gators will be without some of their key players in this SEC matchup.

Running back Montrell Johnson Jr. was listed as questionable throughout the week but he won’t be suiting up tonight against the Wildcats.

Redshirt senior safety Asa Turner was also questionable this week but he will miss yet another game this season. Turner transferred over the offseason from Washington and his only appearance this season came against Miami in Week 1.

Turner has been questionable the last two weeks, so that is a good sign for a return coming soon. With the bye week for Florida next week, Turner should be good to go on Nov. 2 against the Georgia Bulldogs in Jacksonville.

Another notable player that not many think about is long snapper Rocco Underwood. Underwood will miss tonight’s game and something to look at is how the backup long snapper, Gannon Burt, will perform with the special teams snaps, particularly during punts.

Players that were listed as questionable for the game but will play are offensive lineman Austin Barber and running back Treyaun Webb.

You can find the full availability report here.

Coming up for the Gators

Florida football announces Week 2 captains vs. Samford Bulldogs

The Gators announced their three captains earlier today for their Week 2 matchup against Samford.

Florida football has announced their three captains for the game against the Samford Bulldogs this Saturday.

Sophomore EDGE Kamran James, redshirt junior offensive lineman Damieon George Jr. and redshirt junior long snapper Rocco Underwood will hold as the Gators’ Week 2 captains.

James started last week against the Miami Hurricanes and had four tackles including a solo and a quarterback hurry. The 6-foot-5-inch, 267-pound edge defender is in his second season with the Gators. The Orlando native played in all 12 games last season as a freshman, primarily on special teams.

George started last week at right guard against Miami and had a total of 47 offensive snaps. The offensive lineman is in his second season with Florida after transferring from Alabama in 2022.

According to Pro Football Focus, his pass-blocking grade against the Hurricanes was 80.3 out of 100. He didn’t allow a sack or rush. But his run-blocking was graded 56.5 out of 100. So that’s an area that George needs to improve on.

Underwood is a veteran, playing in his fourth season with the Gators and serving as their long snapper. Underwood did record a tackle in Week 1 against Miami and played in every game last season.

Eight Gators on Phil Steele’s 2024 Preseason All-SEC Teams

Florida returns several of the conference’s best players, including these eight who made the Phil Steele Preseason All-SEC Teams.

The Florida Gators regularly produce some of the best talent in the SEC, so it isn’t surprising to see eight UF players named to Phil Steele’s Preseason All-American Teams

A pair of seniors — running back [autotag]Montrell Johnson Jr[/autotag]. and punter [autotag]Jeremy Crawshaw[/autotag] — made the first team.

Johnson transferred from Lousiana, following head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and has been the main man in Florida’s backfield since. He’s passed the 800-yard mark on the ground in both of his seasons in Gainesville and scored 15 rushing touchdowns as a Gator. Crawshaw is one of the nation’s premier legs and is among the punters Florida has ever rostered.

Senior cornerback [autotag]Jason Marshall Jr[/autotag]. and junior inside linebacker [autotag]Shemar James[/autotag] join long-snapper [autotag]Rocco Underwood[/autotag] on Steel’s All-SEC Second Team.

A former five-star recruit, Marshall has yet to live up to expectations at the college level, but he’s considered a top draft prospect and will be tested as such. James is a bit more proven, but he’s coming off a serious knee injury that could change how he plays.

Left tackle and leader of Florida offensive line [autotag]Austin Barber[/autotag] joins kicker [autotag]Trey Smack[/autotag] on the Third Team.

Barber also missed time with an injury last season, but he’s the anchor in the trenches for the Gators. He’ll have some help from the transfer portal this season, but look for him to play the same role up front for UF. Smack took over the starting kicker role for [autotag]Adam Mihalek[/autotag] in 2023. He made all 29 extra points he attempted and made 17 of 21 field goals, including a pair of 50-plus-yarders.

Rounding out the list is sophomore safety [autotag]Jordan Castell[/autotag] on the Fourth Team. Pro Football Focus ranked him fifth among freshman safeties who played at least 20% of his team’s snaps.

Florida special teamers named Phil Steele Preseason All-Americans

The Gators have one of the best punting games in the country, and it’s earning some preseason All-American nods.

Florida punter [autotag]Jeremy Crawshaw[/autotag] and long snapper [autotag]Rocco Underwood[/autotag] made the Phil Steele Preseason All-American list, according to the publication on Monday.

Underwood made the third team and Crawshaw was named to the fourth team.

Crawshaw is coming off an AP All-SEC Second Team Selection in 2023, his third as the Gators’ starting punter. He owns the program record of 46.7 average yards per punt in a career, through a minimum of 90 punts.

He also set the single-season program record with 48.9 average yards over his 42 attempts last year. Over 131 career punt attempts, Crawshaw has placed 51 inside the 20-yard line and booted 55 beyond 50 yards. Pro Football Focus ranked him 12th among punters last season with an 80.4 rating.

Underwood has been Florida’s primary long snapper for the past two seasons, although he made his debut in 2021 against UCF in the Gasparilla Bowl before redshirting.

He played over 100 snaps last year, earning a career-low 49.7 rating from PFF as a special teamer, but he was elite in 2022 at 74.9. The team presented him with one of eight Unsung Hero Awards at the end of the season banquet.

Florida’s long snapper enters transfer portal

Long snapper Marco Ortiz is the most recent Florida Gator to enter the transfer portal, per reports.

There figured to be some turnover after the first year of the [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] era in Gainesville, but the dominos are beginning to fall a bit earlier than expected for the Florida Gators. On Wednesday, long snapper [autotag]Marco Ortiz[/autotag] became the second player to announce his midseason decision to enter the transfer portal, according to Gators Online.

Last week, offensive lineman [autotag]Josh Braun[/autotag] stepped away from the team with intentions to enter the portal on Dec.  5, when he’ll have earned his degree from UF. Ortiz’s situation is a bit different. As a fifth-year redshirt junior who was put on scholarship during the 2021 season, Ortiz already has his bachelor’s degree in health education. That means he can enter the portal immediately and search for a new home without delay.

Ortiz started the year off as Florida’s starting long snapper after winning the job a year ago, but the staff has included him on the weekly injury report since the season opener. A medical waiver could grant him another year of eligibility, but he has at least one more year in college unless he opts to go pro like his brother.

Redshirt freshman [autotag]Rocco Underwood[/autotag] will continue to serve as Florida’s long snapper with Ortiz’s season effectively finished. Underwood signed in 2020 as one of the nation’s top long snappers and made his debut against UCF in the Gasparilla Bowl last season.

Florida updates depth chart ahead of Week 2 matchup with Kentucky

Florida’s week two depth chart looks pretty similar to what Billy Napier submitted ahead of the Utah game, but there are a few key changes that could make a difference on Saturday.

Florida football released its Week 2 depth chart on Wednesday, and [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has made very few changes following an upset win over then No. 7 Utah.

Long snapper [autotag]Marco Ortiz[/autotag] joined the injury report this week and is one of five Gators out for Saturday’s contest against Kentucky. Replacing him is [autotag]Rocco Underwood[/autotag], and [autotag]Chase Whitfield[/autotag] is the backup. Other than that, Florida stayed relatively healthy through week one and returns all offensive and defensive starters for Week 2.

The one addition to the depth chart is running back [autotag]Lorenzo Lingard[/autotag] in the fourth-string spot behind [autotag]Nay’Quan Wright[/autotag], [autotag]Montrell Johnson Jr[/autotag]. and [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag]. He didn’t receive a carry after being left off the Week 1 chart, but was back in the gym the night of the victory. This could be a sign that he’ll be in the mix this week against the Wildcats.

Another minor change worth noting is [autotag]Ricky Pearsall[/autotag] has lone possession of the starting slot receiver spot. [autotag]Trent Whittemore[/autotag] previously received an “OR” designation, but Pearsall was Richardson’s favorite target in Week 1 and is the clear No. 1 there.

Cornerback [autotag]Jaydon Hill[/autotag] could be coming off the injury report in the next few weeks. Napier said he returned to practice and is expected to be back soon.

2021 Gators Football Recruiting Profile: Rocco Underwood

This is a prospect player profile for long snapper Rocco Underwood of the Florida Gators football recruiting class of 2021.

Name: Jonathan Rocco Underwood

Position: Long Snapper

Height: 6’4″

Weight: 220 lbs

Hometown: Lake Mary, Fla.

High School: Lake Mary High School

Twitter: @rocco_4015

247Sports Composite: ⭐⭐⭐

Rivals.com: ⭐⭐

Overview:

While he does not possess the high-notoriety or name recognition of classmates Trevonte Rucker and Tyreak Sapp, Underwood is one of the more important commits in Florida’s 2021 class.

Special teams represent one-third of a football game and, simply, Underwood is one of the best in the business. The Rubio Long Snapping camp, America’s longest-running camp at the position, ran by former UCLA Bruin Chris Rubio, ranked him the No. 1 prospect in the class.

“Underwood was on fire at the Rubio Long Snapping Fall Camp in Georgia on November 24, 2019,” the company said in their breakdown.

“He ended up winning the whole camp and left no doubt he is the top long snapper (in the class). His size is fantastic, he moves well on his feet and his snapping motion is so smooth that it doesn’t even look like he is doing anything.

“The more he continues to finish his follow through, the more he simply will not miss his target. Ball is ready right now for the next level. Underwood is a flat out stud.”

The 14th in-state commit out of the Gators’ 22 in the class, Underwood plays his prep football for the Lake Mary Rams, located about 130 miles southeast of Gainesville. He also plays tight end on the high school gridiron, which is where 247Sports lists him positionally.

Underwood chose to pledge to running backs coach Greg Knox and tight ends coach Tim Brewster over offers from the Alabama Crimson Tide and Arkansas Razorbacks, plus three Group of Five schools.

Exemplifying the type of young man Florida has placed an emphasis on recruiting since Dan Mullen assumed control, he also excels in the classroom, owning a 3.9 grade point average.
