Florida announces Players of the Week for Tennessee game

Florida may have lost on Saturday, but there will still plenty of performances worth recognizing from the boys in Orange in Blue.

Despite the final score of Saturday’s game between Florida and Tennessee, there was a lot to like from the Gators.

On Monday, the team took a moment to recognize the top performers from the contest and revealed who the Players of the Week were. Three players on offense, defense and special teams (game-changers) were selected.

On offense, quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] and receivers [autotag]Justin Shorter[/autotag] and [autotag]Ricky Pearsall[/autotag] got the nod. Richardson provided 515 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in what was easily the best game of his collegiate career so far. Shorter led the way with seven receptions for 155 yards, and Pearsall also broke the century mark (103 yards) on five grabs.

Safety [autotag]Rashad Torrence II[/autotag], linebacker [autotag]Ventrell Miller[/autotag] and linebacker/STAR [autotag]Amari Burney[/autotag] earned the honors on defense. Miller played hurt after missing just one week with an ankle injury and totaled six tackles against Tennesse while forcing a fumble and recovering another. Torrence led the team in total tackles with 13 (11 solo), and he also broke up a pass. Burney finished second on the team with eight tackles (seven solo), including 2.5 tackles for a loss, a pair of sacks for nine yards and a forced fumble.

Punter [autotag]Jeremy Crawshaw[/autotag], linebacker [autotag]Diwun Black[/autotag] and safety [autotag]Kamari Wilson[/autotag] were all recognized for their efforts on special teams. Black made the big play of the night, snatching the ball out of the air on the onside kick to give Florida a last-second shot at the end zone. Crawshaw only delivered one punt on the night, but it landed inside the 20 and [autotag]Adam Mihalek[/autotag] missed his field goal, so it sort of had to be him. Wilson finished with five total tackles, including one on a kickoff return.

These 4 Gators to serve as team captains for USF game

Here are the four Gators who will serve as team captains against the South Florida Bulls.

Florida football is getting geared up for its Week 3 date with the South Florida Bulls in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium this Saturday and ahead of the in-state matchup, head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has released his four team captains for the upcoming game.

Outside linebacker [autotag]Brenton Cox Jr[/autotag]. was among those picked to lead the team against USF. The highly-heralded hybrid linebacker has been a leader on and off the field for the Gators, with his 12 tackles so far good enough for fourth-best on the team — which also included a half-tackle for a loss. The redshirt junior also leads the team in quarterback hits, with three.

Offensive tackle [autotag]Richard Gouraige[/autotag] also got the call due to his diligence on the offensive line. The redshirt junior has kept quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] protected while also helping to open seams for the running game. The offensive line has allowed just one sack so far while helping the ground game earn 423 rushing yards.

Running back [autotag]Montrell Johnson[/autotag], a transfer during the offseason who followed Napier from the Lousiana Ragin’ Cajuns, gets the nod as a sophomore thanks to his team-leading 137 rushing yards on 19 carries along with a touchdown. The sophomore has been the focal point of a Cerberus-like backfield for the Gators and is well-acclimated with the new head coach’s system.

Finally, there is punter [autotag]Jeremy Crawshaw[/autotag], who is in his second year as the Gators’ primary punter. The sophomore from Australia pinned his opponent inside their own 20-yard line on three of five attempts last week while averaging 47.4 yards per punt. He has also stood out as a vocal leader on the special teams squad.

Florida kicks off its game against USF at 7:30 p.m. EDT on Saturday, with the game broadcast on the SEC Network and head on the Gators Radio Network.

Australia product Jeremy Crawshaw looks to become next great Gators punter

Punter Jeremy Crawshaw looks to become college football’s next great punter to hail from Australia.

Name: Jeremy Crawshaw

Number: 26

Position: Punter

Class: Redshirt Freshman

Height: 6’4″

Weight: 193 lbs

Hometown: Emu Plains, New South Wales, Australia

Previous School: ProKick Australia

Twitter: @jeremy_crawshaw

2020 statistics:

PUNTS AVG LNG YDS TB IN20 NET
2 49 50 98 0 1 49

Overview:

Originally from outside of Sydney, Australia, Crawshaw is the next in a long line of punters from the land down under that have broken through in college football in recent years. Discovered by ProKick Australia, Crawshaw was a two-star recruit rated as the No. 9 punter in the 2020 recruiting class.

Crawshaw early enrolled at Florida as a true freshman last season, but he found himself as the backup to redshirt senior Jacob Finn. The only action Crawshaw saw was in the Cotton Bowl loss to Oklahoma, when he had two boots for an average of 49 yards.

After the 2020 season, Finn announced that he was transferring to Virginia, clearing the way for Crawshaw to start in 2021 as a redshirt freshman.

He’s been Florida’s primary punter through the first five games, and he’s attempted 15 punts for an average of 45.3 yards so far in 2021. He has three touchbacks and six punts downed inside the 20 this season.

Crawshaw hasn’t been amazing, and it’s clear UF’s specialists have taken a step back since the days of the Townsend brothers and Evan McPherson. Still, Crawshaw is a talented punter who should be a solid starter for the next few seasons.

Here are five Florida redshirt freshmen to watch in 2021

GatorCountry made a list of five Gators redshirt freshmen to look out for in 2021. Here’s our take on each one.

It’s difficult for true freshmen to enter a Power Five program like Florida and make an immediate impact. Many of these players need a year to adjust to the sheer talent difference between high school and college football. After that redshirt season, many of these former recruits grab a spot in the rotation or find themselves as a starter.

However, for Florida players, it’s not uncommon for these players to still barely see significant snaps. Coach Dan Mullen and his coaching staff have a tendency to value seniority and experience more than other programs across the college football landscape.

2020 Gators Football Recruiting Profile: Jeremy Crawshaw

This is a prospect player profile for punter Jeremy Crawshaw of the Florida Gators football recruiting class of 2020.

Hometown: Sydney, Australia

High School: ProKick Australia

247Sports Composite: ⭐⭐

Overview:

For the first time since the 2012 season, the Florida Gators’ roster will not feature one of the Townsend brothers.

The older brother, Johnny, exhausted his eligibility in 2017, finishing as the program’s all-time leading punter with 11,090 yards on 240 punts (46.2 avg.). The younger Townsend, Tommy, joined the Gators in 2016 after spending his freshman year with another Southeastern Conference (SEC) East Division school, the Tennessee Volunteers, then-coached by Butch Jones.

Tommy was required to sit out his first season on-campus in accordance with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) transfer guidelines and redshirted in 2017, but handled the punting duties each of the last two years, totaling 4,162 yards on 93 punts (44.8 avg.).

To fill the void left by Townsend’s departure, Florida is expected to utilize redshirt senior Jacob Finn, a Jacksonville native, this fall, but Australian Jeremy Crawshaw, a member of the 2020 class, will compete for the job, too.

Presented annually to college football’s most outstanding punter and first gifted in 2000, the Ray Guy Award has seen five of Crawshaw’s countrymen capture the honors, the Memphis Tigers’ Tom Hornsey in 2013, Tom Hackett of the Utah Utes in 2014-15, Mitch Wishnowsky, another Ute, in 2016, Michael Dickson of the Texas Longhorns in 2017, and the Kentucky Wildcats’ Max Duffy in 2019.

The long-term hope in Gainesville is Crawshaw can add another name to this list.

Listed at 6-foot-3-inches and 190 pounds, the Australian took his official visit to campus on September 20, 2019 and committed three days later. Interestingly, he holds the distinction of being the earliest enrollee in program history, faxing his Letter of Intent (LOI) to the school’s compliance office on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.

How is this possible with last winter’s Early Signing Period not beginning until December 18? Crawshaw’s hometown is 14 hours ahead of Gainesville, meaning it was Wednesday there.
