Notre Dame football loses starting offensive lineman for the season

The Irish’s offensive line depth will be challenged

Coming out of [autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag]’s bye week, head coach Marcus Freeman brought some bad news with him in his session with the media.

Freeman announced the starting right guard [autotag]Rocco Spindler[/autotag] will be out the remainder of the season due to a knee injury. The Irish social media account was quick to action, as they made a change to the depth chart for this weekends game against Wake Forest.

Sophomore [autotag]Billy Schrauth[/autotag] will get the start in Spindler’s place, and the hope is that the transition will be fairly seamless. He has played this season, although not in a starting role.

Schrauth was the No. 5 interior offensive lineman and 169th overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings as a recruit.

Watch: Notre Dame freshman introduce themselves ahead of fall camp

If camp is here, then the Irish season isn’t far behind

[autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag]’s football camp is right around the corner.

Actually, it is set to begin tomorrow, Wednesday, and the Irish freshman who did not enroll early were showcased on Notre Dame’s official Twitter account. Each of them introduced themselves, what position they play and a bit of how they are feeling about their first camp.

It’s great to see that many of the players are ready to go, especially the final member of the video, offensive lineman [autotag]Rocco Spindler[/autotag], who is checking in for his third camp at South Bend.

Football is almost here and this is just another reminder that the season is right around the corner.

Notre Dame’s Spindler wins Michigan Anvil Award

That award was given to Notre Dame signee Rocco Spindler on Thursday after a stellar senior campaign at Clarkston High School.

The state of Michigan is smart enough to realize that “best player” and “Mr. Football” awards tend to go to skill players, often overlooking the actual best players on the field.

To combat that they give out the annual STATE CHAMPS! Anvil Award to honor the state’s best linemen and linebackers annually.

That award was given to Notre Dame signee Rocco Spindler on Thursday after a stellar senior campaign at Clarkston High School.

“Best football player I’ve coached in 45 years,” Kurt Richardson, Splinder’s head coach at Clarkston said.

Spindler didn’t allow a sack his entire four-year high school career, but was a strong defensive player too, recording 53 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and a pair of sacks this season.

Spindler is an early-enrollee at Notre Dame and the son of former Pittsburgh Panther and Detroit Lion, Marc.

Spindler was rated as a four-star prospect by both 247Sports and Rivals.

Jarrett Patterson remains gametime decision for Notre Dame-Ohio State

Do you think he plays?

If No. 2 Notre Dame is to hang with No. 5 Ohio State tonight the belief is that the Fighting Irish will have to take the air out of the ball to a certain degree and limit possessions because the Buckeyes offense is perhaps the best in the nation and can score in virtually no time.  A key way to be able to keep possession is obviously by having a successful run game and a key injury upfront for Notre Dame has left questions as to who will play this evening.

[autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag], a potentially All-American interior lineman who switched from center to left guard this year, remains a game-time decision for tonight’s clash in Columbus. [autotag]Zeke Correll[/autotag] gets the start at center tonight and if Patterson is unable to go, sophomore [autotag]Rocco Spindler[/autotag] would be expected to make his first career start.

We’ll keep you posted throughout the day as to anything that comes with this and any other storylines regarding Notre Dame-Ohio State.

Notre Dame All-American still questionable for tilt against Ohio State

It might be a game-time decision

The hope was that preseason All-American offensive lineman [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag] would be fully healthy for the massive road opening season game. According to head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag], it looks like Patterson will still be a question mark as the game gets closer.

The good news is that Freeman shared that Patterson has been practicing, but not in full however. The extent of what he has done was not shared but it still is a solid sign that he could be ready when the nations eyes are watching the Irish take on the Buckeyes. In a game of this magnitude, it is important that Notre Dame is at full strength.

If Patterson is unable to play on Saturday, expect [autotag]Rocco Spindler[/autotag] to take his place a left guard. The second-year player took a redshirt last season but did participate in a few games.

Plenty of take aways from the seasons first depth chart

As in each year of college football, a new group of stars emerge from one season to another. This season will be no different and for Notre Dame, there are more then a few players who could make a significant leap in the eyes of college football fans everywhere. ESPN thinks the Notre Dame offense will be among the best from ‘22-‘24

The Irish have high level talent on the offensive side of the ball

It’s always fun to try and predict the future, especially when Notre Dame has just hired Marcus Freeman and there seems to be a massive change in the program. The former defensive coordinator should see his previous side of the ball continue to excel, but offensively there is still a big question mark.

When Brian Kelly left for LSU, he tried to bring Tommy Rees along with him, but the offensive coordinator chose to stay with his alma mater and Freeman. Although Notre Dame once again lost a senior quarterback for the second consecutive season, first Ian Book and now Jack Coan, ESPN is still high (insider) on the Irish’s future on that side of the ball.

Adam Rittenberg guessed at which offenses would be inside the top-25 from this season through 2024 and placed the Irish fifteenth overall. It was just one spot lower than last years ranking but he says “the overall outlook remains strong” despite the loss of Coan, running back Kyren Williams and wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. Rittenberg names Michael Mayer “arguably the nation’s best tight end” while keying in on the development of “more options at receiver.”

As for the offensive line, Rittenberg notes that the “best offenses have been elite up front, and the 2022 line projects very well under coach Harry Hiestand.” Naming the potential of the starting five immense, with Blake Fisher, Joe Alt and Rocco Spindler each having multiple years remaining in Blue and Gold.

I have long believed that the next step for the Irish program is to get to be an elite offensive team. The defense has always been there and if the offense can catch up, Marcus Freeman has a sleeping giant on his hands.

ESPN selects multiple Notre Dame true freshman to their All-American team

Who’s the true freshman that will make the biggest impact this fall for the Irish?

In what was seen as Brian Kelly’s best effort on the recruiting trail in a few cycles, the 2021 class has the potential to have multiple early impact players. Two of ESPN’s recruiting experts, the two Tom’s, Luginbill and VanHaaren, each selected their preseason true freshman All-American team (insider). Find out below which Irish freshman made the list.

Guessing Notre Dame biggest liability heading into the 2021 season

This group really needs to bring it this fall

Recently the Twitter handle of Big Game Boomer released what they believe is the biggest liability for each of the Power 5 schools. In their estimation Notre Dame’s is the offensive line.

It’s hard to disagree with that, after seeing four of the five starters from last year head off to the NFL. Jarrett Patterson is the only holdover from the 2020 season and while there is still a ton of talent on the various positions on the offensive line, they’re very green. Don’t forget about getting Marshall transfer Cain Madden, the All-American only strengthens the group.

[lawrence-related id=29238]

With some talk about true freshman Rocco Spindler and Blake Fisher having a chance to start, you can see where Big Game Boomer is coming from. I don’t see it that way, in my estimation the offensive line will have some growing pains, but should be fine as the season progresses. The biggest area of concern in my mind would be the wide receivers.

The leading WR in terms of yardage, Javon McKinley is gone to the NFL. As is the touchdown leader from last year Ben Skowronek. You might be thinking about Michael Mayer, well he’s a tight end and although a great threat, not as a wide receiver.

Avery Davis is the leading returning receiver with just 24 catches for 322-yards and 2 scores. Braden Lenzy is the second leading returning receiver, he had just 7 receptions last year for under 100-yards.

[lawrence-related id=28475]

The difference is that the talent on the offense line is just green, they don’t have much experience. The same can’t be said about the wide receiver group. Multiple players will need to step up and in my eyes, this position group posses the biggest liability for Brian Kelly and the Irish this fall.
