The Carolina Panthers are, once again, going out with the old and in with the new.
So now that we’re tallying up the new, let’s also keep track of the old.
Here are the team’s coaching departures heading into the 2024 campaign:
The Panthers (finally) announced that they’ve retained special teams coordinator Chris Tabor, offensive line coach James Campen and assistant offensive line coach Robert Kugler.
Even before Frank Reich took a podium for the first time as Carolina Panthers head coach, he endeared himself to fans by keeping around a few favorites. And now, those moves are official.
As announced by the team on Wednesday afternoon, special teams coordinator Chris Tabor, offensive line coach James Campen and assistant offensive line coach Robert Kugler have been retained. Joe Person of The Athletic was first with the news (if it’s even new anymore) two weeks ago back on Jan. 30.
Tabor was initially brought on by former head coach Matt Rhule prior to the 2022 campaign. He’d go on to lead one of the top overall units in the NFL, as the Panthers finished fourth in Rick Gosselin’s 2022 NFL Special Teams Rankings.
Carolina got standout seasons from both of their legs in kicker Eddy Piñeiro and punter Johnny Hekker. Piñeiro, a late summer addition courtesy of Tabor, booted through 94.3 percent of his field goal tries while Hekker landed a franchise record and league-best 39 punts inside the 20-yard line.
Campen also joined the organization in 2022. He and Kugler helped fortify the best offensive line the Panthers have fielded in quite some time, as the group finished 15th in Pro Football Focus’ final rankings.

The Panthers made a bunch of changes to their coaching staff this offseason—so many that they may have been difficult to keep track of. So, we did it for you.
After an embarrassing 5-12 campaign, Carolina Panthers saw a whopping eight coaches from their 2021 team hit the bricks. Whether that was by the fiery hand of Matt Rhule or a move elsewhere on their own accord—the now former coordinators, position coaches and assistants gave way to what’s essentially an entirely new staff moving forward.
So, in case you need some help keeping track of all the changes, here’s who’s out and who’s in for 2022.
After a bumpy transition into the 2022 offseason, Matt Rhule and the Panthers now have their coaching staff all in place.
Less than 24 hours after the completion of the 2021 NFL season, the Carolina Panthers did a little completing of their own.
As reported by Darin Gantt, Matt Rhule’s revamped coaching staff is now locked in. Three moves—all of which came on the offensive side of the ball—were made official by the team late Monday afternoon.
One of which was the hiring of new wide receivers coach Joe Dailey—a nugget ESPN college football senior writer Pete Thamel noted a few hours prior. Dailey, who most recently headed the wideouts over at Boston College for the past few seasons, will be replacing Frisman Jackson in the role.
Additionally, like Jackson, tight ends coach Brian Angelichio is leaving the organization for an opportunity elsewhere. Kevin Gilbride, a defensive analyst for Carolina in 2021 and the former tight ends coach under offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo back in New York, will now assume those duties.
Lastly, the opening left by assistant offensive line coach Tony Sparano Jr.’s jump to the Giants will be filled by Robert Kugler. The 29-year-old—along with stints at the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Washington and Appalachian State University—worked under new Panthers offensive line coach James Campen as an assistant with the Houston Texans in 2021.
