He’s coming off a hamstring that he re-injured. We thought the best thing for Robert — he’s a guy we really like and are excited to work for, but we got to get that thing right. He qualified for the short-term. He had to make out 53. He’s a guy who showed a lot and we’re thrilled about the prospect of working with him going forward. But, we have to get him back so he’s ready. We will go through that process.

State of the Roster: Can 49ers defensive end depth step up?

Our State of the Roster continues with a look at a 49ers defensive end group that’s full of question marks.

With 49ers OTAs in full swing, we’re taking a position-by-position look at the team’s roster to figure out the strengths, weaknesses, potential dark horses to make the team and other nuggets about the players who will be competing for jobs on the 53-man roster.

It’s impossible to say whether the 49ers have enough in their defensive end room entering training camp. Their group of DEs all come with significant question marks as defensive line coach Kris Kocurek aims to work his magic again on underutilized pass rushers still trying to find their way in the NFL.

While San Francisco doesn’t have any sure things at DE behind Nick Bosa, there’s plenty of reason for optimism. Players like Samson Ebukam, Charles Omenihu, Kerry Hyder and Arden Key have all experienced breakout success while playing on the 49ers’ defensive line. There’s a chance the club sees similar results with this year’s DE group (non-Bosa division). That’s what they’re banking on, anyway.

There could be changes coming depending on how the team feels about its DEs once training camp starts, but lets look at what the 90-man roster looks like at that spot heading into camp:

49ers draft picks: DE Robert Beal Jr. has all the tools

Robert Beal Jr. is a DE with not much college production, but a ton of upside for a 49ers DL that needs help on the edge.

It wouldn’t have been a huge surprise to see the 49ers to snag a defensive end early in this year’s draft. Instead they waited until their second pick in the fifth round to go that route. With the No. 173 overall pick, they added Georgia defensive end Robert Beal Jr.

Beal’s stats don’t jump off the page. He played in 59 games for the Bulldogs and posted 10.5 sacks with 12 tackles for loss. However, a deeper dive indicates Beal could be an impact rusher off the edge with some polish.

He measured in at 6-3, 247 pounds at the combine with a very good 83-inch wingspan. He also ran a 4.49 in the 40-yard dash. That means Beal has good size with long arms and above-average explosiveness. That ability to get off the line of scrimmage with long arms to keep offensive. tackles from putting hands on him is a great starting point for Beal.

The Georgia alum won’t have a significant role right away. He’ll begin the year buried down the depth chart behind Nick Bosa, Drake Jackson, Clelin Ferrell and Austin Bryant. He may even be behind Kerry Hyder who played primarily on the interior last season.

It’s worth betting on Beal’s upside though with his combination of size and athleticism. Putting him alongside defensive line coach Kris Kocurek could bear fruit with yet another fifth-round steal, even if it that development doesn’t happen right away.

WATCH: Robert Beal Jr.’s best highlights from University of Georgia

Robert Beal Jr. put together a great highlight reel as a Georgia Bulldog and should prove to be a great investment for the #49ers

Robert Beal Jr. could prove to be one of the San Francisco 49ers’ best picks in their 2023 draft class but will need to find a way to buy himself some playing time before fans can get a good look at his talent.

He was a standout on the University of Georgia’s defense last year, playing a key role on the Bulldogs’ defensive line. Beal’s athleticism should translate well to the NFL, and with some luck, he could factor into the 49ers’ plans sooner than some expect.

Check out his best college highlights below to get more familiar with Beal’s game ahead of the 2023 season:

49ers select Robert Beal Jr. in fifth round with No. 173 pick

Georgia product Robert Beal Jr. should be a solid player for the #49ers after being drafted with the No. 173 pick in the 2023 NFL draft

The San Francisco 49ers selected University of Georgia defensive end Robert Beal Jr. with the 173rd overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. Beal is a proven talent from one of the best football programs in the nation, but may have a hard time getting reps on the 49ers ultra-talented defense.

Something of a project, Beal will need time to adjust to the pace of the NFL game, and could surely benefit from time in a professional weight room as a rookie. He needs to get more consistent with his game on a snap to snap basis to become the player scouts hope he can be, but if he puts it all together over the next several years, Beal could be one of the best picks in this draft.

San Francisco entered this draft with minimal assets, so converting picks to valuable prospects will be crucial to their success in the coming years. Beal should prove to be a competent selection here.
