Panthers WR Robby Anderson can’t wait until he’s in the playoffs

Panthers WR Robby Anderson, who has played in zero career playoff games, is tired of spending the postseason on his couch.

Carolina Panthers wideout Robby Anderson just might be one of those cases where he’s the right guy at the wrong time.

The six-year receiver has spent each of those NFL campaigns with, well, less-than-competitive franchises. In addition to his past pair of seasons with Carolina, Anderson suited up for four go-rounds with the New York Jets. Between 2016 and 2021, his teams have combined for a record of 31-66 with zero playoff appearances.

So you can’t blame him for being sick of watching the postseason from his house . . .

Unfortunately, he’s now watching this weekend’s games fresh off his most disappointing year as a pro. In what was a frustrating journey for everyone involved with the Panthers—Anderson posted career-lows in receiving yards (519), yards per reception (9.8) and catch rate (48.2 percent).

Also unfortunately for Anderson, it feels as though his Panthers are a mile and a half away from joining the league’s best in the annual tourney. We feel your pain, Robby.

Panthers Week 18 inactives: S Jeremy Chinn out, WR Robby Anderson in vs. Bucs

The Panthers will be without Jeremy Chinn in the Week 18 finale. But you will, however, see some Deonte Brown with John Miller also out.

Carolina Panthers wideout Robby Anderson was the main man to keep on an eye for when today’s inactive list rolled around. But, after a bit of a morning surprise, another challenger entered the arena.

That challenger was safety Jeremy Chinn, who was added to the injury report on Sunday after rolling his ankle during yesterday’s practice. He has now been ruled as inactive for the Week 18 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Anderson, however, is a go. The sixth-year receiver was a non-participant in practice from Wednesday through Friday due to a quad injury.

Here’s the entire rundown of inactives in the regular-season finale for Carolina:

S Jeremy Chinn
QB P.J. Walker
S Sean Chandler
LB Kamal Martin
DE Jacob Tuioti-Mariner
DE Azur Kamara
G John Miller

With Chinn and Miller down, expect to see safety Kenny Robinson and veteran Trent Scott (with a little of rookie guard Deonte Brown) in their places.

Tampa Bay will have a few notable players in street clothes as well:

QB Kyle Trask
CB Richard Sherman
WR Justin Watson
RB Ronald Jones II
CB Rashard Robinson
G Nick Leverett
OLB Jason Pierre-Paul

Biggest storylines for Panthers vs. Buccaneers in Week 18

Will we see Cam Newton in what could be his final game as a Carolina Panther?

Sunday seems like a final chapter for the Carolina Panthers. A tangible step down here in 2021, with messes abound, will certainly have the organization wiping some of their slate clean for next season.

So, as the Panthers are set to close the campaign against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, keep that and these following storylines in mind for Week 18.

Panthers Week 18 injury report: WR Robby Anderson a game-time decision vs. Bucs

According to Panthers head coach Matt Rhule, Robby Anderson will be a game-time call for Sunday’s regular-season finale.

Carolina Panthers wideout Robby Anderson has had a 2021 to forget. So maybe closing up shop a tad early may not be the worst idea.

That could be the case on Sunday, as Anderson is officially listed as questionable for the Week 18 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The sixth-year receiver, who did not participate in practice throughout the week due to a quad injury, will be a game-time decision according to head coach Matt Rhule.

Here’s the rest of the final injury report for the regular-season finale:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
WR Robby Anderson Quad DNP DNP DNP Questionable
CB Stephon Gilmore Groin DNP
S Sean Chandler Groin DNP DNP DNP Doubtful
DE Yetur Gross-Matos Illness DNP
WR Shi Smith Illness DNP
CB CJ Henderson Knee Limited Limited Limited
DT Derrick Brown Elbow Limited Limited Questionable

The statuses of Gilmore, Gross-Matos and Smith—who all remain on the reserve/COVID-19 list as of Friday—are obviously unknown to this point. Don’t, however, expect to see Gilmore in what could be his final week with the team as he continues to nurse a groin strain.

Panthers WR Robby Anderson, CB Stephon Gilmore out from Wednesday practice

Shortly after ending Terrace Marshall Jr.’s season, the Panthers hit the practice field on Wednesday without Robby Anderson.

Not too long before the Carolina Panthers kicked off their final practice week of the 2021 campaign, we learned that Terrace Marshall Jr.’s season had been cut a game short. Unfortunately, he may not be the only receiver missing from the offense in Week 18.

Fellow wideout Robby Anderson was not on the field for Wednesday’s practice due to a quad injury. He was one of five Panthers who did not participate ahead of the season finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
WR Robby Anderson Quad DNP
CB Stephon Gilmore Groin DNP
S Sean Chandler Groin DNP
DE Yetur Gross-Matos Illness DNP
WR Shi Smith Illness DNP
CB CJ Henderson Knee Limited

Also out was Gilmore, who missed Week 17’s loss to the New Orleans Saints. So Gilmore, who is set to enter free agency this offseason, could have very well played his final game as a Panther.

Panthers predictions: How’d we do in the Week 16 loss?

We predicted the Panthers wouldn’t allow Bucs QB Tom Brady to absolutely go off in Week 16. And we were right. But were we right on the button?

The end result of this Week 16 meeting between the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers wasn’t too difficult to predict. But how did we do throughout the painful defeat?

Panthers lose coin toss

Our coveted coin-toss record is back in play this week. Can we go 9-0 by siding against the Panthers for a second straight game?

Outcome: Incorrect. The streak . . . is over. Tampa Bay chose incorrectly and the Panthers kicked it off to start the contest.

Panthers score on their first drive

Yeah, how about that? Quarterback Cam Newton adds at least one more memorable moment to the bank in what could be his final home game as a Panther. He leads the offense down for, let’s say, a touchdown pass to wideout Robby Anderson.

Outcome: Correct. It wasn’t a touchdown from Cam Newton, but he did lead Carolina down the field for a 24-yard field goal from Lirim Hajrullahu. Newton orchestrated a pretty sharp nine-play, 64-yard drive, highlighted by a 33-yard run from the 6-foot-5, 245-pound quarterback.

And the Buccaneers do not

We’ll keep the excitement at Bank of America Stadium going. After lighting up the scoreboard, the Panthers turn Tom Brady and the hobbled Bucs offense away. No Mike Evans, no Chris Godwin, no Leonard Fournette—no dice . . . for now.

Outcome: Correct. The Buccaneers stalled after six plays netted them just 16 yards to begin their afternoon.

They do, however, score on their second drive

After getting his feet wet with his depleted set of weapons, Brady finds the end zone. He connects with his boy Rob Gronkowski inside the red zone.

Outcome: Correct. On the fifth play of their second touch, running Ke’Shawn Vaughn dashed the Panthers defense for a 55-yard touchdown run. His first career score gave the Bucs a 7-3 lead about 11 minutes in.

Panthers keep it a one-score game at the half

Many, of course, are predicting a pretty smooth afternoon for the Bucs. But it won’t be. Carolina takes them into a close, one-possession game at the break.

Outcome: Incorrect. That lead would widen quickly for Tampa. Another touchdown, this time on a 4-yard pass from quarterback Tom Brady to tight end Cameron Brate, and a pair of Ryan Succop field goals had the visitors up 19-6 at the break.

Cam Newton finishes with the most snaps at QB

Head coach Matt Rhule said on Tuesday that he’ll start Newton in a “major role” and then bring a returning Sam Darnold in “at some point.” That’s the most detail we’ve gotten about this plan, which is assuredly another questionable one. What isn’t questionable, though, is that the Panthers faithful will have garbage ready to pelt Rhule with if he somehow shuns Cam here.

Outcome: Incorrect. Newton was out-snapped by fellow passer Sam Darnold, 44 to 26. Cam completed seven of his 13 throws for 61 yards and a pick while rushing for 42 yards on five takes in what may have been his final home game as a Panther.

Sam Darnold finishes without a turnover

We’ll give Sammy boy the benefit of the doubt. Plus, if we’re forecasting less than half of the snaps for him, his chances to add to his 13 turnovers are not as great. But Darnold could, as he often does, amaze us in all the wrong ways.

Outcome: Correct. Darnold’s performance wasn’t exactly pretty either, as he finished having connected on 15 of his 32 throws for 190 yards. But at least none of those throws ended up in the hands of a Tampa bay defender.

Robby Anderson finishes as the team’s leading receiver

Carolina’s top wideout DJ Moore will be a game-time decision with his strained hamstring, so he may not go. Regardless, Anderson—who sang the praises of Newton in tremendous detail this Thursday—works off the added chemistry and gets himself to at least the 75-yard mark.

Outcome: Incorrect. These honors go to the rookie Shi Smith, who shined with 86 yards on three receptions. The defiant Anderson finished right behind Smith with 58 receiving yards.

Tom Brady finishes with under 225 passing yards

As we’ve referenced, this offense could struggle a bit on the afternoon without its three most valuable weapons. Additionally, the Panthers did themselves pretty well against Josh Allen last week, limiting the Bills’ star to just 210 passing yards.

Outcome: Incorrect. Ugh . . . so close! Brady completed 18 of his 30 chucks for 232 passing yards on the day.

Panthers lose

Yet, that still won’t be enough to pull off the upset. This will be closer than most think, but the defending champs hold off Carolina for Brady’s first career victory over a Newton-led team.

Outcome: Correct. The Panthers were thumped, 32-6, for their fifth straight loss.

Week 16 prediction tally: 5-of-10 correct

2021 prediction tally: 77-of-150 correct (51.3 percent)

Results record: 8-7

Robby Anderson had a wholesome response to fans ripping his garbage time first down celebration

“Ima count my blessings and live my dream and enjoy it to the fullest.”

Robby Anderson isn’t letting the haters get to him.

On Sunday, Anderson caught the ire of NFL fans and Carolina Panthers supporters after celebrating a seemingly meaningless first down with under two minutes to play. At the time, the Panthers were losing 32-6 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the celebration seemed — to many — out of place given the score in garbage time.

Though the Panthers lost Sunday’s game and have fallen to 5-10 on the year after losing five straight games, Anderson responded to NFL fans who were upset with his celebration on Twitter. In his honestly quite wholesome response, Anderson stated that he is living his dream and wants to “enjoy it to the fullest”.

Look, I get why NFL fans had their feathers ruffled here and why Panthers fans are upset at the team, but Anderson isn’t the reason Carolina has dropped five straight games. If he wants to have a bit of fun out there in a lost game, let him!

Panthers WR Robby Anderson on Week 16 boos: ‘We don’t want no fake fans’

Robby Anderson wasn’t particularly fond of how Panthers fans “welcomed” Sam Darnold back on Sunday.

As evidenced by his untimely first-down celebrations during yesterday’s beatdown, Carolina Panthers wideout Robby Anderson always keeps it real. And he it kept it real on Monday, even if that meant calling out some of the team’s “faithful.”

When speaking with reporters via video call (due to the “somewhat significant” COVID-19 spread amongst some Panthers players), Anderson pointed out a particularly bothersome moment from the Week 16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He let it be known that he did not take too kindly to the fans booing, then cheering, quarterback Sam Darnold in his return.

“One thing I didn’t like, and it’s just what it is, Sam came on the field and they booed him,” the sixth-year receiver said. “Like, that’s crazy, you know what I’m saying? He’s doing all he can and has done all he can. He obviously made mistakes. We all do. But when he was doing good—two plays later—he’d make a big play, they cheering for him.”

Upon his first entry into the game in place of Cam Newton, Darnold was greeted with boos at Bank of America Stadium. He then, on his first throw, proceeded to find a wide open Shi Smith for an exciting 63-yard gain.

Fans, of course, flipped the script and showed their approval for the impressive display. But it’s that type of flip-flopping that Anderson and the organization doesn’t really want to see from their home crowd.

“Like, that’s not real fans, you know what I’m saying?” he added. “For the culture that we’re building, we don’t want no fake fans. We want diehard, loyal fans that’s gonna ride or die for us. Simple as that.”

Darnold, who eventually lost that sliver of good faith, ended up completing 14 of his next 31 attempts for 127 more yards in the 32-6 defeat.

So while Robby is sound in his messaging, let’s still be fair here. Has this supposed “culture” really given the fans anything to be happy about lately?

Watch: Panthers WR Robby Anderson keeps it real with untimely celebrations

There wasn’t much for the Panthers to celebrate against the Bucs on Sunday. But Robby Anderson still did anyway.

Even in what’s been a particularly disappointing season for Carolina Panthers receiver Robby Anderson, he hasn’t stopped being himself. So at least there’s that.

With his team down 32-6 during Sunday’s battering at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the sixth-year wideout spit in the face of convention and refused to hold back his pride. Anderson, regardless of that godforsaken score, put exclamation points on a pair of first-down receptions with some (admittedly hilarious) acts of defiance.

Those two grabs helped make up for a five-catch, 58-yard day for Anderson. And while it’s considered poor form to celebrate while staring down the barrel of a three-score deficit that late in the game, he’s probably had some pent up energy to let out in the midst of this lackluster campaign.

Plus, the 28-year-old is fresh off getting engaged just six days ago. So you can’t tell this man anything right now.

Robby Anderson celebrated a first down while losing by 26 points and NFL fans ripped him

Maybe not the best time to celebrate a meaningless first down.

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Robby Anderson picked up a first down late in his team’s game against the Buccaneers on Sunday and celebrated that accomplishment by spinning the ball on the Bucs’ sideline and pointing ahead for the first down.

The only problem was the Panthers were trailing the Bucs by 26 points when he did that, which made him look pretty silly.

I’m all for players celebrating good plays, especially in football because it’s such a grueling game that you should celebrate any of the good things that you’re able to pull off. I just wouldn’t do that in the final minutes of a blow out loss.

Check this out:

Probably just want to quietly make your way back to the huddle after that play.

NFL Twitter had jokes:
