Joe Douglas wants Jamal Adams to be a ‘Jet for life’

Jets general manager Joe Douglas wants Jamal Adams to be a Jet for life.

Joe Douglas wants Jamal Adams to be a New York Jet forever.

Douglas spoke to the media at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday and was asked about where the Jets are at with Adams and a contract extension. Douglas said he has had preliminary talks with Adams’ agent, but wouldn’t get into specifics. But Douglas wants Adam in New York for the long-term.

“The plan is for Jamal to be a Jet for life,” Douglas told reporters.

Ever since Douglas discussed Adams in trade talks prior to the 2019 in-season deadline, the GM has made it known that he wants the safety to stay with the Jets. Prior to the trade deadline, teams called about Adams, only to discover Douglas was asking for an exorbitant return. However, Adams didn’t appreciate having his name discussed at all and he avoided Douglas and Adam Gase for a couple of weeks.

The trio has since cleared the air and seem to be on good terms. Adams has also expressed a desire to remain in New York.

The All-Pro safety had another fantastic season in 2019, as he made the Pro Bowl and was named a first team All-Pro member. Adams had 61 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, seven pass defenses, one interception, a fumble recovery and two touchdowns in 14 games.

As for Robby Anderson, Douglas said he will speak to his agent this week at the combine about potentially re-signing the receiver. He called Anderson a “dynamic wide receiver who can take the top off any defense.” What the GM is willing to pay for that skill set remains to be seen.

The Jets also stated that they have no plans to trade Le’Veon Bell and Douglas is looking forward to having him back next season.

Robby Anderson believes Jets want him back in New York

The Jets have told free agent wide receiver Robby Anderson that they’d like to re-sign him.

The New York Jets are getting a head start on trying to keep their own free agents.

Robby Anderson spoke to the media at the Miami Convention Center on Wednesday and discussed his upcoming free agency. Anderson has made it publicly known that he’d like to stay with the Jets for years to come, but it wasn’t known if the Jets felt the same way. Now, according to Anderson, the Jets have made their intentions known.

“I know they’ve communicated that they do want me back,” Anderson said Wednesday, according to Newsday. “So, we’ve just got to see how it plays out.”

The specifics of a new deal have yet to be discussed, though. However, Anderson is seeking between $13-15 million annually, according to a previous report from The Athletic’s Connor Hughes.

“I don’t think they’ve gotten to numbers,” Anderson said, “but I know obviously they want to be at the table, and I think they’re planning to be at the table to keep me in-house.”

Anderson said at the end of the season that he would keep his options open in free agency and that he has no plans of giving the Jets a hometown discount.

The fourth-year wideout out of Temple had one of the best seasons of his career in 2019. He recorded 52 catches for 779 yards and five touchdowns. Most of that came at the end of the season when the Jets offense started to come together.

If Joe Douglas can lock Anderson up before he hits the open market, it would be one less thing the general manager has to worry about during free agency.

Jets WR Robby Anderson joins exclusive undrafted free agent club

Robby Anderson became the fifth NFL player to reach 3,000 receiving yards in his first four seasons after entering the league as a UDFA.

Robby Anderson’s season began rather quietly, but the fourth-year receiver recently joined an exclusive club of undrafted players.

Anderson became the fifth NFL player since 1970 to reach 3,000 receiving yards in his first four seasons after entering the league as an undrafted free agent. The list includes former Jets WR Wayne Chrebet, an undrafted free agent out of Hofstra.

Here’s the full list:

3,000 Receiving Yards Club

Player Team 1st 4 Yrs Recs Yds Avg TDs
1. Victor Cruz NYG 2010-13 241 3626 15.0 23
2. Wayne Chrebet NYJ 1995-98 283 3517 12.4 18
3. Antonio Gates SD 2003-06 265 3378 12.7 34
4. Drew Pearson DAL 1973-76 188 3103 16.5 18
5. Robby Anderson NYJ 2016-19 202 3009 14.9 19
Through the first four games this season, Anderson had just 11 receptions for 131 yards. When Sam Darnold returned from his bout with mono, Anderson immediately jumped back onto the scene. In Week 6 against Dallas, he caught five passes for 125 yards, including a 92-yard score.

With his name circling trade rumors and the Jets offense reeling, Anderson’s production again hit a standstill. However, over the past four games, he has been red hot. In his past four contests, Anderson has caught 22 of 34 targets for 370 yards and two scores.

His Thursday night performance put him over the 3,000-yard mark. Anderson caught four passes for 66 yards in the Jets’ 42-21 loss to the Ravens on Thursday Night Football.

With two games left to play against two of the best defensive backfields in the NFL, it’s unlikely that Anderson is going to set any career highs. Anderson is 271 yards shy of 1,000 for the season.

Still, he continues to put himself in a position to get paid this offseason when he hits free agency. It remains to be seen if the Jets will be the ones to pay him, but Anderson is due for a sizeable contract nonetheless.
