Tracking Raiders coaching staff hires

The most up-to-date look at the Raiders new coaching staff under head coach Pete Carroll.

The Raiders coaching staff is filling up. There are still a lot of positions that have either not been filled or not reported yet. And, of course, there are some coaches who are still under contract, but who could still be let go should they add someone new at their position.

So, let’s gather them all into a list to see who is in place so far.

Head coach — Pete Carroll

Offense

Offensive Coordinator — Chip Kelly

Offensive line coach — Brennan Carroll

Quarterback coach — Greg Olson

Running backs coach — Deland McCullough

Wide receivers coach — Chris Beatty

Defense

Defensive coordinator — Patrick Graham (retained)

Defensive pass game coordinator — Joe Woods

Defensive line coach — Rob Leonard (retained)

Linebackers coach — John Glenn

Defensive assistant — Beyah Rasool

Special teams

Special teams coordinator — Tom McMahon (retained)

Other news:

Most coaches who we know will not be back, the team has hired their replacement. We know cornerbacks coach Ricky Manning Jr and safeties coach Gerald Alexander will not return, but we don’t yet know who their replacements will be.

Raiders get back popular defensive line coach with added title

As hoped the Raiders will get defensive line coach Rob Leonard back. And he adds the title of running game coordinator.

Pete Carroll wisely made his top priority upon taking the Raiders job to retain defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. And with Graham’s return it seemed likely defensive line coach Rob Leonard would be back as well.

Leonard’s return is now confirmed and he does so with the added title of running game coordinator.

Last season it was linebackers coach Mike Caldwell who had the added title of running game coordinator. Now Caldwell has been replaced by former Seahawks LB coach John Glenn, while the running coordinator title shifts to Leonard.

Leonard is credited with helping the Raiders fielding a strong pass rush, including breakout seasons for Malcolm Koonce in 2023 and K’Lavon Chaisson last season. His named was bandied about for open defensive coordinator jobs, so getting him back is another win for this coaching staff.

Pete Carroll hopes to retain some current Raiders staff. That plan should start with this man

Raiders new head coach Pete Carroll said he wants to retain some current staff in Las Vegas. That plan should start with DC Patrick Graham.

Newly minted Raiders head coach Pete Carroll would like a mixture of coaches on his staff. That is to say some he knows, some he doesn’t, and some returning from the Raiders current staff.

He’s already working on bringing in coaches who have been on his previous staff, holding an interview with his former Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. But that’s only part of the puzzle.

“I’m hoping that we can maintain some of the terrific coaches that are on the staff, too, so we can have the benefit of the insights that they bring and the continuity that they can generate for us,” Caroll said at his introductory press conference.

Who they try to keep should start with one man — DC Patrick Graham.

Unmoored by Josh McDaniels after his firing midway through last season, Graham led a resurgence on the Raiders defense. And the rest of the NFL has taken notice.

With Graham’s contract now up, he has gotten several interviews across the league, including this week with the Jacksonville Jaguars to be their defensive coordinator.

It remains to be seen whether, if all things are equal, Graham would prefer a return to the Raiders under Carroll.

It could depend on whether he would be ok with Carroll’s — being a defensive coach — hands-on approach. It could be he’d prefer to be on a staff with an offensive coach so he could have more freedom to run his system on the defensive side of the ball.

Graham’s preferences aside, Carroll would be doing himself a disservice not trying to retain Graham first and foremost.

Keeping Graham would likely mean several of his key position coaches return as well. But even if they are unable to retain Graham, the Raiders should attempt to keep some of his staff. Most notably defensive line coach Rob Leonard.

The Raiders defensive line was one of their strengths the past season and a half. It was led by Maxx Crosby, but didn’t end there, with the likes of Malcolm Koonce and K’Lavon Chaisson seeing breakout years on the other side.

Crosby and the other defensive linemen love Leonard, so it would only strengthen the bond between Carroll and the defense to keep him on staff.

Raiders DL coach Rob Leonard joins coaching staff at Senior Bowl

Raiders DL coach Rob Leonard joins coaching staff at Senior Bowl

Each year you see players from the senior bowl who go to teams that had coaches on staff to get up close and personal looks at them. The Raiders have one of their coaches on hand in Mobile as well. They sent defensive line coach Rob Leonard there to coach linebackers as Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.

Leonard coached the Raiders defensive line last season. Prior to that he had coached either outside linebackers or defensive linemen since 2017.

As the Raiders defensive line coach last season, he saw the emergence of Malcolm Koonce along with Maxx Crosby’s best season as a pro.

Raiders hire former Ravens OLB coach Rob Leonard as new defensive line coach

Raiders have a new DL coach in former Ravens OLB coach Rob Leonard

Largely, the Raiders defensive line struggled last season. Specifically along the interior. Their underachieving led to the ouster of Frank Okam after just one season on the job.

Okam’s exit was official a week ago and today Ravens head coach John Harbaugh announced that outside linebackers coach Rob Leonard has been hired by the Raiders to coach their defensive line.

Leonard has coached at the NFL for the past ten seasons. He spent just one season as the outside linebackers coach in Baltimore after three seasons in Miami.

He held different coaching jobs in each of his three seasons with the Dolphins. First as linebackers coach (2019), then as assistant defensive line coach (2020), and then as outside linebackers coach (2021).

Twice in his career, Leonard coached under Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

Graham took over as defensive line coach for the Giants in 2016 while Leonard was a defensive assistant. Then when Graham was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Dolphins in 2019, he hired Leonard to be his linebackers coach.

Now Graham had the chance to bring Leonard onto this staff again, and he took it.

Ravens officially announce five coaching hires

The Ravens officially announced multiple coaching hires

The Baltimore Ravens have been on quite the coaching carousel during the start of the 2022 offseason. They replaced their now-former defensive coordinator Don Martindale with the University of Michigan’s Mike Macdonald, and have seen other coaches leave for other opportunities, creating holes on their staff.

On Wednesday, Baltimore officially announced the hires of five coaches in inside linebackers coach Zach Orr, outside linebackers coach Rob Leonard, tight ends coach George Godsey, defensive quality control coach Ryan Osborn and assistant offensive line coach Mike Devlin.

All five hires were previously reported, so they didn’t come as much of a shock. They will be tasked with working to help their players become the best that they can be, and each brings valuable and unique experiences to Baltimore.

Report: Dolphins retain defensive line coach, lose outside linebackers coach

More continuity.

Less than a week after head coach Mike McDaniel was hired by the Miami Dolphins for his role, he has a good portion of his coaching staff already in place.

According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the Dolphins are keeping defensive line coach Austin Clark in his position for the 2022 season. Clark becomes the first positional coach to be retained after the team moved on from defensive backs coach George Alexander and tight ends coach George Godsey.

Clark will continue to work under defensive coordinator Josh Boyer, as he has since 2020 when he was brought on to be the outside linebackers coach. He’ll continue to work with Christian Wilkins, Zach Sieler, and company, but his group does have a big free agent in Emmanuel Ogbah who Clark would probably want back.

The Dolphins also lost outside linebackers coach Rob Leonard to the Baltimore Ravens on Friday, as he was signed for the same position, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec.

In three years with Miami, Leonard moved around from linebackers coach to assistant defensive line coach and finally to outside linebackers in 2021. He got a great opportunity to work with rookie Jaelan Phillips, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Jerome Baker this past year, and he’ll look to build on that production with Baltimore in 2022.

Ravens reportedly make two more additions to coaching staff

The Baltimore Ravens have reportedly made two new additions to their coaching staff

The Baltimore Ravens have been riding the coaching carousel for much of the 2022 offseason. Multiple coaching positions have been vacated and new faces have been brought in, including as high up as at defensive coordinator.

On Friday morning, it was reported by Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic and others that Baltimore made two new additions to their coaching staff in hiring Rob Leonard to be their new outside linebackers coach, while Ryan Osborne is being brought on board in a quality control capacity.

Leonard has spent time with the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants, with his most recent experience being as Miami’s outside linebackers coach. He also has experience as a defensive line coach, so he can work with multiple positions on the defense if need be.

Osborn comes over from the University of Michigan, where he is credited with helping the development of some of the program’s EDGE players such as Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo.
