Samford transfer Achor Achor schedules official visit to Auburn

The forward earned All-SoCon honors after scoring 16.1 points and securing 6.1 rebounds per game.

Auburn basketball made a splash by landing All-SoCon guard JP Pegues from the transfer portal to fill its need for a guard. [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] and his staff are now trying to add the SoCon’s top forward.

The Samford Bulldogs enjoyed a special 2023-24 season with a perfect 18-0 home record, a SoCon championship, and a first-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament that resulted in a controversial loss to Kansas.

Forward [autotag]Achor Achor[/autotag] was a key reason for the Bulldogs’ success last season by leading the team with 16.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game. His season performance landed him on the All-SoCon team alongside Auburn transfer [autotag]JP Pegues[/autotag]. Following the season, Achor entered the transfer portal and has garnered interest from several schools including Auburn. According to On3’s Joe Tipton, Achor will be on campus this week for an official visit.

Auburn continues its hunt to find a suitable replacement for [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] after striking out on two targets last week. Former Clemson forward [autotag]RJ Godfrey[/autotag] was supposed to visit last week but canceled in favor of committing to Georgia. Montgomery native [autotag]Duke Miles[/autotag] did show up for an official visit to Auburn last week, but the former High Point product ultimately chose Oklahoma over the Tigers.

Achor would be a solid addition to Auburn’s rotation due to his experience and size. His 6-9 stature, mixing in his knowledge with players such as [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] and [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag] will aid the development of newcomers [autotag]Tahaad Pettiford[/autotag] and [autotag]Jahki Howard[/autotag].

As a transfer, Achor is ranked as a four-star forward by 247Sports and is the No. 36 overall power forward in the transfer portal.

Former Clemson forward RJ Godfrey announces transfer to Georgia

Clemson forward RJ Godfrey is heading to Georgia.

Another former Clemson player has announced his transfer destination.

After two seasons with the Tigers, forward RJ Godfrey announced his transfer to Georgia. A familiar place for Godfrey, his father Randall Godfrey, played football at Georgia before a lengthy NFL career.

During his sophomore season, Godfrey averaged 6.1 points and 3.4 rebounds. His impact was truly felt on the defensive end.

“First and foremost, I want to thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to play basketball at Clemson University,” Godfrey said. “The past two years have been an incredible experience in which I was able to fulfill one of my lifelong dreams of playing basketball for this prestigious university.

Former Clemson forward RJ Godfrey to visit Auburn this week

Godfrey shot 42% from three-point territory as a sophomore at Clemson.

Auburn basketball’s 2024-25 roster will be filled with talent. Auburn has added transfer [autotag]JP Pegues[/autotag] to mesh with freshman guards [autotag]Tahaad Pettiford[/autotag] and [autotag]Jakhi Howard[/autotag]. It also helps that star [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] and key contributors [autotag]Chaney Johnson[/autotag], [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag], and [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag] are set to return.

Auburn is still looking to fill a need at forward and will try to secure the missing piece this week by hosting former Clemson forward [autotag]RJ Godfrey[/autotag].

According to a report by Auburn Undercover, former Clemson forward RJ Godfrey will visit the Plains on Tuesday, April 30. The visit will be Godfrey’s third since entering the transfer portal. He has also taken in visits to Virginia Tech and Oklahoma.

Godfrey was a solid contributor off the bench for Clemson over the last two seasons. In 69 total games, he averaged 4.7 points while shooting 59% from the field and 38% from the three-point territory. He secured 2.8 rebounds while assisting with 39 shots and recording 25 steals.

At the time of this post, Auburn has three returning forwards on its roster: Chaney Johnson, Chris Moore, and [autotag]Addarin Scott[/autotag]. The key void that Auburn will look to fill this offseason will be the spot left behind by [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag]. Williams exits Auburn’s roster after a great career that saw him score 9.3 points per game with 3.9 rebounds and a 78% free throw percentage.

Everything Brad Brownell said after Clemson’s win over Florida State

Clemson won for the fifth time in its last six games when the Tigers downed Florida State, 74-63, Saturday night at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Clemson won for the fifth time in its past six games when the Tigers got past Florida State, 74-63, in ACC play Saturday night at Littlejohn Coliseum.

With the win, the Tigers (19-8 overall, 9-7 ACC) moved to a season-high 11 games games over .500. It was also the team’s fourth consecutive victory over their nemesis from Tallahassee, a first in Clemson basketball history.

Joe Girard finished with a game-high 24 points in the win, including four 3-pointers. Girard was also a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Chase Hunter had 16 points in 36 minutes to go with four assists. Hunter connected on six of 12 shots from the floor.

RJ Godfrey added 12 clutch points and six rebounds off the bench and played 22 minutes after PJ Hall found himself in foul trouble for much of the night.

Afterwards, Tigers coach Brad Brownell said that it was likely Godfrey’s best game in his two seasons at Clemson.

Here’s everything Brownell said after the Tigers’ victory over Florida State.

What We Heard: Hemenway, Godfrey

Offensively in Clemson’s 72-41 win over Loyola Maryland on Monday night, a key player for the Tigers was senior guard Alex Hemenway, who had a perfect field-goal percentage, scoring on all five of his shots including three 3-pointers.

When asked about his offensive success, Hemenway, who finished with 13 points, responded, “My teammates do a great job of finding me when I’m open and just getting that first look going down, and it’s just great for shooters like me to see that.”

Highlighting the depth of Clemson’s bench, freshman RJ Godfrey scored his first career points, continuing on to finish the game with seven points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal.

“It was great,” Godfrey said. “We practice together every day, fight against the starters every day. It was real fun running with Dill (Dillon Hunter) and Wiggs (Chauncey Wiggins).”

Godfrey continued on to share the impact of graduate forward Hunter Tyson.

“We talk about coverages and plays every single day, even after practice,” Godfrey said. “So I would say that’s my mentor right now.”

As a freshman, Godfrey believes he is still progressing as a player.

“I still have a lot more to learn and a lot more to grow from,” he said.

One of the biggest things is details.

“Positioning, especially on defense,” he said. “I’m still just trying to get in the right position every possession and just play hard every possession.”

With tournament play coming up, Hemenway discussed the Tigers’ confidence in the momentum being built.

“We’ve been working hard in practice,” he said. “Defensively, offensively…Offense has been pretty good the past few games, and just cleaning up a lot of things on the defensive end.”

Defensively, the Tigers were dominant Monday night, allowing only 14 points in the first half while holding Loyola to a 28.8 shooting percentage for the game and causing 18 turnovers that the Tigers transformed into 16 points.

Clemson (4-1) faces off against Iowa at 7 p.m. Friday on CBS Sports Network in the Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville, Fla.

Freshman big in line to be part of rotation for Clemson hoops

One of Clemson basketball’s newcomers is expected to be part of the frontcourt rotation this season.

While sophomores Ben Middlebrooks and Ian Schieffelin are filling in at center in PJ Hall’s absence for the time being, fifth-year senior Hunter Tyson brings a veteran presence to the power forward spot. Backing him up, though, is more youth.

Freshman forward RJ Godfrey will be part of the rotation when the Tigers kick things off with an exhibition against Benedict College on Wednesday. Godfrey provides additional depth that Clemson needs along the frontline, but Tigers coach Brad Brownell said bringing Godfrey along has happened naturally since the 6-foot-7, 225-pounder has been part of the Tigers’ top 10 since arriving on campus earlier this year.

“In practice, you put 10 guys out there, and he’s one of the 10,” Brownell said. “So it’s Hunter and Ian against Ben and RJ. It’s Hunter and Ian or Hunter and Ben against Ian and RJ. That combination of four guys has battled each other most days.”

A three-star recruit, Godfrey signed with Clemson after averaging 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks as a senior at North Gwinnett (Georgia) High. He possesses athleticism stemming from strong bloodlines. His father, Randall Godfrey, was an NFL linebacker for more than a decade.

Brownell said the younger Godfrey brings some of that physicality to the hardwood, which should help bring a different dimension to the power forward spot. While Tyson is more likely to stretch the floor with his ability to shoot from the perimeter, Godrey has more of a rugged skill set on the interior.

“RJ’s a big, strong, physical guy now,” Brownell said. “He and (point guard) Dillon (Hunter) are the two freshmen that physically don’t look like freshmen. You wouldn’t you wouldn’t walk into practice and look at those two guys and guess that they’re freshmen.”

Brownell also praised Godfrey’s feel for the game at such a young age.

“RJ has got a good, live body,” Brownell said. “He runs easy, he bounces well around the basket area, and he can physically put his body on people. Sometimes you have to be reminded that he’s 18 years old because he doesn’t look like he’s 18 years old … Just humble, hard-working, wants to learn and is eager but inexperienced for the level, so it’s still moving fast at times for him. But, boy, he’s got a lot of natural tools, and he makes some natural plays that you don’t coach.”

Having a different type of skill set at the position also means more versatility when it comes to lineups, one area in which Brownell said he believes this year’s team is different than his previous one. Brownell didn’t rule out the possibility of Tyson and Godfrey playing together if the Tigers need to beef things up in certain matchups.

“If we wanted to put our biggest lineup out there, it would probably be (point guard) Chase (Hunter), (shooting guard) Brevin (Galloway), Hunter (at small forward, RJ (at power forward) and Ben or Ian (at center),” Brownell said. “Hunter’s ability to shoot the ball really helps that because you’ve still got plenty of shooting, but now you’re 6-8, 6-8, 6-10 or 6-8, 6-8, 6-8 across the front line, and that helps your strength and your rebounding.”

Clemson lands three-star 2022 point guard

Clemson men’s basketball added a fourth, highly-touted recruit to its 2022 class on Wednesday.

In an offseason with plenty of turnover and unexpected twists, Clemson men’s basketball added a 2022 three-star recruit to its incoming freshman class on Wednesday.

According to Joe Tipton of On3, Dillon Hunter, brother of current Clemson guard Chase Hunter, has committed to Clemson. Out of Wichita, Kansas, Hunter is the No. 127 overall prospect, according to On3 2022 Consensus.

The 6-foot-3 guard chose the Tigers over five other schools, including Baylor, Auburn and Georgia. Dillon Hunter signed a letter of intent to Baylor in November but decommitted on April 18, just two days before the move to the Tigers.

Dillon Hunter’s commitment helps alleviate the hole left behind by former Clemson guards Nick Honor and Al-Amir Dawes, who both entered the transfer portal after last season. The Tigers were thought to have added Princeton transfer guard Jaelin Llewellyn a week ago, but Llewellyn announced his recruitment reopening on Tuesday.

With the addition of Dillon Hunter, Clemson now has four members of its 2022 recruiting class, which includes three-star forward RJ Godfrey and three-star guard Chauncey Gibson.
