Clemson men’s basketball drops out of the latest USA SPORTS Coaches Poll

The Tigers have been on a tough run, leading to them falling out of the latest Coaches Poll.

Brad Brownell and the Clemson men’s basketball team started off their season scorching hot, but the Tigers have cooled off in recent weeks.

With their cold run, where they’ve lost three of their last four games, the Tigers have fallen out of the rankings of the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. The Tigers went from No.22 to out of the ranks after a week where they lost 87-72 to Virginia Tech and won 89-78 against Boston College.

Though the Tigers are no longer ranked in the Coaches Poll, they are still receiving votes (39). The Tigers have two opportunities this week to earn their way back into the rankings as they host Georgia Tech on Tuesday and travel to Florida State to face the Seminoles on Saturday.

Clemson moves up a spot in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Clemson men’s basketball remains one of the country’s best teams this season.

Brad Brownell and the Clemson men’s basketball team remain one of the top teams in the country after another successful week.

Playing in one game last week, the Tigers looked excellent at home as they took down Queens 109-79 on Friday. Clemson’s offense was on fire in the win, with the Tigers scoring the most points the program has had in a game since 2002.

Though a strong win, the Tigers saw little movement in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. They did move up, but just one spot from No.18 to No.17. It wasn’t the most active week of college basketball with the holiday, so the Tigers didn’t get as many opportunities to prove their case for making a bigger jump.

Clemson debuts in the latest USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll

Clemson basketball flew up the rankings into the top 25 for the first time this season.

Like the AP Poll, Clemson has made another debut in a men’s basketball top 25 rankings.

Clemson (7-0, 1-0 ACC) joined the USA TODAY Sports Men’sCcollege Basketball Coaches Poll rankings for the first time this season, ranking No.20 in the country. The Tigers moved up 14 spots from unranked to a top 20 team. This comes following another great week from head coach Brad Brownell’s team where they picked up a ranked win over Alabama on the road, followed by an ACC win over Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Overall, this is exactly the type of start you wanted from this Clemson team that is filled with veterans and some of the best talent in the conference. It is early in the season, but right now, the Tigers look like one of the best teams in the conference.

Clemson men’s basketball ranks No.5 in the 2023 ACC Preseason Poll

Clemson is one of the top teams in the ACC heading into the season.

CHARLOTTE — PJ Hall (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) was tabbed preseason First Team All-ACC on Thursday by media at the league’s annual preseason media day, which was held in Charlotte on Wednesday. Hall is the second Clemson player since 2020 to be named preseason All-ACC First Team, joining Aamir Simms.

In addition, Clemson was chosen to finish fifth in the ACC. That is the highest preseason prediction for the Tigers since 2008-09 when they were also picked to finish fifth.

Hall was named to the first team along with Kyle Filipowski (Duke), Armando Bacot (North Carolina), Reece Beekman (Virginia) and Norchad Omier (Miami (Fla.)). He is coming off of a Third Team All-ACC season in 2022-23. He averaged a team-leading 15.3 points per game to go along with 5.7 rebounds per contest and 37 blocks and 22 steals. He shot 53.5 percent from the floor and 39.8 percent from three. He finished 78.6 percent from the foul line.

In league play, Hall was even better. The Spartanburg, S.C. native averaged a team-best 17.6 points to go with 6.6 rebounds. He shot 54.0 percent in ACC play, including 83.3 percent at the foul line. He maintained a high average from three (38.6 percent).

Hall became the 45th 1,000-point scorer in Clemson history against Notre Dame (March 4, 2023) and has 1,043 points entering this season. He became just the 11th from the state of South Carolina to score 1,000 points at Clemson.

Despite being on a minute restriction last year, Hall produced 27 double-digit scoring games, ten 20-point games and four double-doubles.

Clemson set a new mark for league wins in any conference last season with 14 ACC victories. The 14 wins broke a school record by three games. The .700 winning percentage was the third best in Clemson history, and better than 11 of the previous 13 Clemson teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Clemson started 7-0 and 10-1 in the ACC last year and the seven consecutive league wins tied a school record that dated to 1967. The Tigers had six wins over teams that reached the NCAA Tournament, just one less than Clemson’s Sweet 16 team of 2018. Many of the victories were in dominant fashion. The Tigers won eight ACC games by double digits and five of those were by at least 20 points. No other ACC team had as many league wins by that margin.

Clemson lands massive commitment from Top-70 4-star Guard Del Jones

Brad Brownell lands another huge recruit in the 2024 class.

Brad Brownell and the Clemson basketball staff are on a hot streak recruiting in the 2024 class.

Monday, Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.) four-star point guard Del Jones announced that he has verbally committed to play for Brownell and the Tigers. This is a massive pickup for the Tigers and is further proof that this program is trending in the right direction.

According to ESPN’s recruiting rankings, Jones is currently the No.14 guard and No.66 overall player in the 2024 class. Jones chose Clemson over Arizona State, Oregon, Tennessee, and West Virginia, some big basketball schools.

Jones is now the third member of Clemson’s 2024 recruiting class, which includes Top-100 recruit Dallas Thomas and legacy commit Ace Buckner

It took Clemson withstanding punch after punch, but the Tigers kept a mid-major’s ACC body count from increasing Friday.

Chase Hunter led five Tigers in double figures with 15 points, and Clemson held off Bellarmine for a 76-66 win inside Littlejohn Coliseum. Brevin Galloway scored 14 points, Ian Schieffelin had 13, Hunter Tyson scored 11 and PJ Hall added 10 for Clemson, which pulled away late to start its first winning streak of the season.

Bellarmine, which beat Louisville 10 days earlier, led 46-45 with 10 minutes, 58 seconds left. But Clemson (3-1) went on a 16-7 run, which included an 8-2 spurt that gave the Tigers a 61-53 lead with 6:03 left – their largest lead at the time.

Clemson later used a 12-2 run to go up 15 with less than 2 minutes remaining. Bellarmine (2-2) missed eight of its last 10 shots from the field and was held to 40% shooting in the second half.

Hunter, who also dished out eight of Clemson’s 14 assists, knocked down 5 of 6 3-pointers, helping the Tigers shoot better than 46% from deep. Clemson shot 46.8% overall and 86% from the free-throw line (19 of 22).

Bash Wieland led Bellarmine with 16 points.

Clemson will try to make it three straight wins Monday when the Tigers conclude their three-game homestand against Loyola-Maryland.

It was the guards early. The bigs got involved later.

That balance helped Clemson’s men’s basketball team get back in the win column Tuesday.

Chase Hunter led the way with 20 points while Alex Hemenway added a career-high 18, helping the Tigers bounce back from their loss to rival South Carolina late last week with an 81-70 win over USC Upstate at Littlejohn Coliseum. Four players finished in double figures for the Tigers, who shot 56.4% from the floor.

Brevin Galloway made 4 of 6 shots from the field to chip in 15 points, the most in a Clemson uniform so far for the Boston College transfer. In his second game back from offseason knee surgery, PJ Hall again came off the bench and finished with 13 points and two rebounds in 21 minutes after leading the Tigers with 15 points against the Gamecocks.

Meanwhile, Hall’s frontcourt mate, Hunter Tyson, scored all of his eight points in the second half of a game Clemson led by as many as 19. It was Clemson’s backcourt, though, that was humming early.

The Tigers’ 41 points by halftime were the most they’ve scored in a half this season thanks in large part to Hunter, Hemenway and Galloway. They combined to score all but seven of those points. Hemenway made four of his first six shots en route to 10 first-half points while Hunter and Galloway each had 12 at the break.

The trio combined to shoot 11 of 17 from the field to help the Tigers make nearly 54% of their shots in the first 20 minutes. Clemson held Upstate to 41.7% shooting in the opening half and led by as many as 13 before halftime.

Upstate trimmed the deficit to a couple of possessions late in the half before Hunter sank a corner 3 just before the buzzer. Tyson started the second half with his first bucket of the night, igniting a quick 6-2 spurt for the Tigers that pushed their lead back to double digits at 47-34 with 17 minutes, 49 seconds left.

Jordan Gainey had a game-high 24 points for Upstate (1-2), which shot better than 52% from the field.

While Clemson’s men’s basketball team gets its season going, the Tigers continue to wait on their star player to return to action.

As expected, PJ Hall has yet to play in the early going as he continues to work his way back from knee surgery. Clemson coach Brad Brownell has said since Hall sustained a dislocated kneecap over the summer that the hope was the Tigers’ leading scorer from a season ago could return sometime in November.

Brownell said following the Tigers’ season opener Monday that Hall has made more progress in his recovery of late, but Brownell still didn’t have a more definitive timetable for his return.

“He was better late in the week than he’s been by far (during the preseason),” Brownell said. “He didn’t practice on Sunday. His sister got married, so he went to the wedding. He just did a little light workout today, and we’re off (Tuesday). So I don’t really have much for you.”

Hall, who also had foot surgery in the spring, averaged 15.5 points and 5.8 rebounds as part of a breakout sophomore campaign last season, earning all-ACC honorable mention honors.

Clemson has been fine without him against inferior competition early on. The Tigers cruised to an exhibition win last week before getting career nights from Chase Hunter and Ian Schieffelin to knock off The Citadel in Monday’s opener.

Things figure to get tougher Friday when Clemson heads to Columbia to take on rival South Carolina.

The totality of Clemson’s latest basketball season will be revealed over the next four months or so.

But the Tigers began an important one under their veteran coach in the win column, though getting there wasn’t always comfortable.

Clemson opened the new season Monday by knocking off The Citadel at Littlejohn Coliseum. Even without the services of star big PJ Hall (knee), the Tigers still had four players score in double figures in their 80-69 win. Chase Hunter led the way with 23 points, tying a career high.

Ian Schieffelin had the first 20-point game of his Clemson career as part of a double-double. Hunter Tyson and Boston College transfer Brevin Galloway added 19 and 11 points, respectively, for the Tigers.

A recent exhibition romp over an overmatched Division II program not withstanding, Monday marked the Tigers’ competitive return to the court after a disappointing 17-16 season plagued by injuries and inconsistency. Clemson wasn’t part of college basketball’s postseason in any capacity last season, the first time that’s happened since 2017.

The Tigers went to the NCAA Tournament in 2021 – their second appearance in the last three tournaments – but Clemson’s showing last season, which included a 10th-place finish in the 15-team ACC, prompted Graham Neff to publicly express his disappointment of the Tigers failing to dance for the ninth time in Brad Brownell’s 12-year tenure. Clemson’s first-year athletic director made clear his expectations for the program in a letter penned to season-ticket holders.

Preseason projections weren’t high on the Tigers this season either as Clemson was picked by league media to finish 11th in the conference. But with five newcomers, including Boston College guard transfer Brevin Galloway, joining seven holdovers from last season’s team, Brownell touted the Tigers’ depth and versatility coming into it.

A Citadel team that lost all of its double-figure scorers off a 13-18 squad last season wasn’t the most accurate barometer when it comes to the chemistry and cohesion of Clemson’s retooled roster, though the Bulldogs didn’t go quietly. Behind Austin Ash’s 19, The Citadel cut the deficit to single digits a handful of times in the second half, the last coming at 78-69 with less than 2 minutes remaining. But Chase Hunter found Schieffelin for a dunk on Clemson’s next possession, and the Bulldogs didn’t get any closer.

The lineup tinkering for Clemson started early with nine players getting some run within the first 6 minutes and change, but it was a familiar face that helped the Tigers overcome a sluggish start for some early breathing room.

The Citadel led by a couple of possessions 13 minutes into the game before the Tigers ended the first half on a 23-5 run. Chase Hunter made seven of his first 10 shots to finish with 19 first-half points. The junior point guard had 11 points during that surge, including his third 3-pointer just before the buzzer to send the Tigers to the locker room with a 45-31 advantage.

Middlebrooks got the start at center in the absence of Hall, one of the most improved players in the ACC last season at 15.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. But Schieffelin ended up logging the most minutes at the position (31) and was highly productive with them. The sophomore forward, who also plucked 14 rebounds, went inside and out to make his first six shots en route to a career night, easily surpassing his previous career-high of 12 points that he scored against North Carolina in February.

What figures to be a much better gauge of where this Clemson team is early in the season comes Friday when the Tigers hit the road for the first time to take on rival South Carolina.
