What went right and wrong in UNC’s win against NC State

A look back at UNC’s Saturday afternoon win, taking a closer look at what went right and wrong for the Tar Heels.

The UNC men’s basketball program brought out the brooms Saturday, sweeping NC State after a 79-70 victory.

Despite being the superior team, the Tar Heels struggled out the gate and the finish, proving no matter the record, when two rival teams face off you can throw records out the window. Outside of play being played at a higher level due to the rivalry aspect, UNC did a few right and wrong things that caused the rollercoaster affair.

A lot went right for UNC to secure the victory, but a majority of what went wrong took place in the first half, which is why the game was close in the first place.

In the first half, the defense was nonexistent, with NC State knocking in seven triples (64%), shooting 57.6% from the field to pour in 45 points. 13 of those 45 points were scored by UNC turnovers, as NC State continued to capitalize off the Tar Heels mistakes.

The second half painted a completely different story, with UNC playing juggernaut defense. They held NC State to 22.8% from the field in the second half, including a stretch of 15 consecutive missed shots for the Wolfpack. NC State’s hot shooting from three also vanished, knocking in 2 of 8 three-point attempts.

The finish was nearly a disaster, with UNC not delivering the blowout that was breading but getting the job done despite the few drops of sweat.

From an offensive standpoint, UNC did a great job attacking the basket, resulting in 27 free throw attempts, which they capitalized by shooting 85.2% from the line. [autotag]Elliot Cadeau[/autotag] had an aggressive outing, pushing the pace with 15 points and seven assists.

This win was ideal for UNC, who has two big games left, big for their reasons. They will take on Notre Dame on Tuesday, marking [autotag]Armando Bacot’s[/autotag] and potentially [autotag]RJ Davis’s[/autotag] last game in the Dean Smith Center. Then they travel across the street to take on arch-rival Duke Blue Devils, as they look to complete the regular season sweep.

PHOTOS: Tar Heels win streak snapped on the road

Photos from UNC basketball’s 74-73 loss to Georgia Tech Tuesday night.

The UNC men’s basketball program suffered its first ACC loss of the season, losing in a 74-73 nail-biter.

The loss snapped the Tar Heels 10-game winning streak and gave them their first road L. This loss stings even more for UNC because of the no-call at the end of the game. Hubert Davis drew up a well-executed play that got the ball in [autotag]RJ Davis’s [/autotag] hand, but the No whistle on a clear foul on the game-winning shot attempt overshadows creative efforts.

The Tar Heels will return to Chapel Hill looking to crank up a new winning streak, but it will start against their arch-rival Duke Blue Devils. The rivalry that has lasted for decades would be the perfect remedy to get over this ugly upset to the Yellow Jackets.

Saturday can’t come soon enough, but before we get ahead, let’s take a look at the best photos from UNC’s road game against Georgia Tech.

RJ Davis continues to strive as UNC’s top scoring option

North Carolina Tar Heel RJ Davis continues to strive as UNC’s top scoring option with his third consecutive 27+ point scoring game.

The North Carolina men’s basketball has been clicking on all cylinders to start the season, and a large part of that is due to[autotag] RJ Davis’s[/autotag] stellar scoring.

In the 78-70 comeback win against FSU, Davis finished with 27 points, five assists and three rebounds. The 27-point performance marks the third consecutive game for Davis scoring 27 points or more.

The Tar Heel has been versatile in getting buckets, in the Tennessee win Davis’s 27 points came from his hot hand behind the arch, knocking in five threes. Meanwhile, in the Arkansas win, going 10 for 10 at the free throw line is how he ended up with 30 points.

After the game, Davis spoke to media about what is working so well offensively for him.

“I think my teammates are doing a great job of just finding me and I’m finding my shots in the flow of the offense,” Davis said after the game. “When I get the ball I’m being aggressive and not trying to force anything and just taking what the defense gives me. Also, just trusting my confidence, trusting myself and the off-season work I’ve put in. You know, it’s my senior year as well, so I just want to go out with a terrific senior year and have fun with it.”

He has quickly been able to emerge as UNC’s best scoring option, averaging a team-high 19.4 points per game. Dropping any doubt about handling the upgraded workload after Caleb Love’s departure.
