Here’s what you’re missing if you’ve never visited the Chattahoochee River

Discover the Hooch!

In 2022, over 3.5 million people visited Georgia’s Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. This recreational hotspot centers around (you guessed it!) the one and only Chattahoochee River. This roughly 430-mile landmark is one of the country’s smallest river systems, but it still manages to offer plenty of adventure opportunities for outdoor explorers.

If you grew up in Georgia, Alabama, or Florida, you might be familiar with the Chattahoochee as a chill summer fun destination. In warm months, it’s pretty common to see swimsuit-clad crowds floating down the river on intertubes. This river provides even more than meets the eye, though. See what else it has in store with this list of eight fun outdoor activities to try on the Chattahoochee River.

This weekend, swim for a good cause on the Ohio River

Join up and jump in.

On Sunday, August 27, swimmers can join Ohio-based nonprofit Adventure Crew for a fundraising event on the Ohio River. Proceeds from the 2023 Bill Keating, Jr. Great Ohio River Swim will help Adventure Crew connect city teens to nature and each other through outdoor adventures.

Interested in joining this open-water swim across the Ohio River? Pre-registration is open until Saturday, August 26, at noon. Participants will start their swim at Serpentine Wall in downtown Cincinnati. From there, swimmers will make their way to the Kentucky side of the river before tracing the same route back. During the approximately 900-meter race, the river will be closed to motorized traffic. Onsite safety paddlers will help provide support when needed.

“The Great Ohio River Swim has become a ‘bucket list’ event for many local swimmers,” Miriam Wise, Adventure Crew’s director of support and engagement, said. “We’re excited to host both competitive and recreational swimmers in support of Adventure Crew’s Swim Training Program, which provides city teens with access to swim lessons, water safety instruction and lifeguard certification.”

Swimmers seeking an extra challenge can apply for one of the few “Double Dipper” spots. Double Dipper will go for a 2.5-mile swim down the Ohio shoreline before joining participants in the 900-meter course. These swimmers will commit to raising at least $200 for Adventure Crew.

The fundraiser gets its name from Bill Keating Jr., one of the first swimmers to sign up for the first swim in 2007. While Keating passed away from brain cancer in 2017, his family remains involved with the Great Ohio River Swim.

“I’m thrilled to continue being part of this event and to honor my dad’s legacy,” Caroline Keating, Bill Keating Jr.’s daughter and Adventure Crew board member, said. “Adventure Crew broadens access to swim instruction and provides city teens with a critical life-saving skill, thanks in part to the proceeds from this fun morning on the river.”

Pre-register for the event online here. On-site registration will open at 7 a.m. on the day of the swim. In the event of unsafe water conditions, the swim will be rescheduled for Sunday, September 10.

Colts’ player of the game vs. Bengals: QB Philip Rivers

Philip Rivers had a day.

After a wild win in Week 6 in which the Indianapolis Colts survived a rocky start, they move to 4-2 on the year. This victory would not have been possible without Philip Rivers and his ability to lead consistent drives down the field and put the Colts in a position to win.

Rivers finished the day with 371 yards passing and three touchdowns. The throw of the game was a 55-yard deep ball to Marcus Johnson, who also had a great day.

Rivers was also fantastic in the red zone with two of his touchdown passes coming inside the 20-yard line.

The 38-year-old’s toughness is something that can’t be denied. Rivers has multiple plays today where he moved outside the pocket and extended plays despite taking some shots at the end. He stayed in there though and got the job done.

Rivers will need to play like he did this week going forward as the Colts struggle to develop a consistent run game. After the bye, the Colts will travel to take on the Detriot Lions in Week 8.

QB Philip Rivers to coach Alabama high school team after retiring

Philip Rivers will go from NFL quarterback to high school coach.

After parting ways with the Chargers, quarterback Philip Rivers signed with the Colts to a one-year deal earlier this offseason.

Once he is done with his stint with Indianapolis, Rivers has his next job lined up already.

Rivers will take over as the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, AL, once he retires from the NFL, according to AL.com.

“It’s a special day for me and my family really,” Rivers said during a Friday press conference at St. Michael. “I will probably get a little emotional. I had two childhood dreams. One was to play in the NFL, and I’m now going into my 17th season. The other was to be a high school football coach as my dad was. How blessed am I to be able to live both of those out!”

After 16 seasons with the Chargers, Rivers thought about hanging up his cleats before signing with the Colts. He mentioned how he wanted to coach high school football once his professional playing days came to an end.

Now he will be able to live out that dream soon. “My dad was my high school football coach, so I want to coach my boys and I want to coach young boys down the road, so I do know what’s next when my playing time’s over, so we did talk about it a little bit,” Rivers said. “I think really where we settled in was: I still love to play. Certainly not coming off my best year, but in a year where I still know I can play at a high level. I did it in spurts. I just didn’t do it consistently enough. And I love it, and, shoot, it was one of those deals where we said, ‘Well, if there’s nothing else out there, then that’ll be our answer.’

“We kind of said, ‘Whatever God wants, so if there’s nothing out there, I don’t want to just try to hang on to play. If nothing’s out there, shoot, we’ll start coaching.'”

There are 36 free-agent quarterbacks on the market according to spotrac. There are only 12 on this list. That’s because there are really only 12 free agent QBs with enough cache, skill, or name recognition that really matter. So let’s rank them because that’s what we do. These rankings aren’t based on which quarterback has had the best career — Tom Brady would obviously be at the top of that list — but instead are ranked on who a team should want now. That means age, contract length, dollar amount, skill, and if they are only a fit for one team or many teams are taken into account. Just don’t get angry when Tom Brady isn’t at the top of this list.

Early today, the internet was ablaze with rumors that the Los Angeles Chargers were ready to move on from Philip Rivers. Apparently, the team was ready to go into 2020 without one of the most successful quarterbacks in franchise history.

Those rumors were shot down by a report that no actual decision has been made. Let’s just say the rumors were true. The Chargers were ready to use Tyrod Taylor for a bridge year, draft a quarterback, and let Rivers play somewhere else for next season. Let’s look at some destinations where he could end up.
