Husker to player for Team Netherlands in FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament

A Nebraska men’s basketball player will be participating in the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament next week.

A Nebraska men’s basketball player will participate in the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament next week. Forward Rienk Mast will try and help the Netherlands advance in the tournament, which is taking place in Istanbul, Turkey.

Mast is making his second appearance for the senior National Team and his first appearance since 2019. During the 2019 Basketball World Cup, he averaged 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game in three contests.

The Netherlands will play Sweeden, Belgium, and Croatia during pool play. Should the Netherlands advance from pool play and win the tournament, they would qualify for one of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments next summer.

Mast will spend his first year at Nebraska after having previously played at Bradley University. Last year, he was a member of the All-Missouri Valley Conference first-team, averaging 13.8 points per game and 8.0 rebounds.

5 big men the Oregon Ducks should pursue in the transfer portal

The Oregon Ducks are awaiting decisions for both N’Faly Dante and Kel’el Ware, but the transfer portal has replacements if needed.

The frontcourt for the 2023-24 Oregon Ducks is about as unsettled as it could possibly get.

Nate Bittle plans to return after averaging 7.3 points and 5.1 rebounds in 18 minutes per game last year, but until either N’Faly Dante or Kel’el Ware announce their plans for next season this team will need to explore the transfer portal to make an addition to the frontcourt.

Dante is coming off a career year and could parlay that into a professional career, either in the NBA or overseas if that doesn’t pan out, while Ware’s first season in Eugene went extremely poorly and it seems unlikely he’ll choose to return, either trying his hand at the NBA or entering the transfer portal.

Assuming one (or both) of those players depart, the Ducks will turn to the transfer portal to find a post player who can compliment the trio of newcomers in KJ Evans, Mookie Cook, and Jackson Shelstad.

The portal is far from set, with 1500 or so players expected to enter when all is said and done, but here is a first look at five big men the Ducks could bring to Eugene for next season:

Florida basketball coaches meet with Yale transfer target

Florida basketball coaches met with Yale forward EJ Jarvis recently as the staff continues to look at options in the transfer portal.

Florida basketball coaches met with Yale forward [autotag]EJ Jarvis[/autotag] during an in-home visit, according to a Wednesday report from 247Sports.

Jarvis entered the transfer portal a week ago and is shaping up to be one of the targets Todd Golden’s staff is most interested in. Golden and Co. have a big task ahead of them as they attempt to replace most of the frontcourt from a season ago. [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] will still be around, but [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag], [autotag]Jason Jitoboh[/autotag] and [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag] are all leaving the team.

There are plenty of minutes up for grabs at UF right now, and Jarvis has shown that he has the stuff to excel at the Ivy League level. He averaged 11.4 points and 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. At 6-foot-8 inches tall, Jarvis isn’t afraid to let fly from deep. He shot 40.6% on 32 three-point attempts a season ago.

Despite his impressive numbers, Jarvis didn’t play a ton for Yale last season. He played in just over 55% of the team’s minutes, so this isn’t a 36-minute-a-night kind of guy. That might work well with Todd Golden’s system and allow some flexibility with other potential incoming transfers.

The Gators have also been linked to St. Francis forward [autotag]Josh Cohen[/autotag] and Bradley forward [autotag]Rienk Mast[/autotag].

Jarvis was just a three-star recruit coming out of high school and ranked No. 497 overall in the class of 2019. He now has offers to play in the SEC and other Power Five programs.

Florida hoops targeting former Bradley forward in transfer portal

Florida has already lost a good chunk of its basketball roster to graduation and the transfer portal, but the Gators are looking to add some new pieces of their own.

After 88 games with the Bradley Braves, forward [autotag]Rienk Mast[/autotag] is testing out the transfer portal waters and getting plenty of Power 5 interest, including some from the Florida Gators, according to 247Sports.

UF is treating Mast as a priority target with one of the biggest team needs being frontcourt depth following the departures of [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag], [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag] and [autotag]Jason Jitoboh[/autotag]. Mast averaged 13.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game last season for the Braves and is hoping his game translates against even stronger competition.

“I’m looking for a great basketball spot,” Mast said to the Peoria Journal Star. “Bradley is a great basketball spot. But you get to play against high majors 4-5 times a season. I want to see how I match up and play under bright lights every night. I want to see how I stack up against the best competition in college.”

At least 10 Power Five programs have already reached out to Mast, so Florida won’t be alone in its pursuit of him. The 52nd 1,000-point scorer in Bradley’s history is a hot commodity on the early transfer portal market.

At 6-foot-9-inches tall, Mast could fight right into the role Felder had at the start of the season, playing the four. The Gators still need to add a big man to match up with the nation’s top centers, though, and Mast would be a bit small for that spot. His rebounding skills are strong, but you can’t teach height.

Expect Florida to be very active in the portal this offseason because the team lost so many players.

Crowl goes off, Badgers defeat Bradley 81-62

The Wisconsin Badgers’ men’s basketball team defeated Bradley 81-62 in their Round 1 matchup of the NIT on Tuesday.

The Wisconsin Badgers’ men’s basketball team defeated Bradley 81-62 in their Round 1 matchup of the National Invitation Tournament on Tuesday.

Fueled by a career night for Steven Crowl, Wisconsin easily took care of business at the Kohl Center. The seven-footer scored a career-high 36 points while also reeling in nine rebounds versus the Braves.

Crowl was an uber-efficient 12-for-16 from the field while nailing five three-pointers on seven attempts, also a career high from deep. Coming off of an eight-point performance against Ohio State in the Badgers’ disappointing Round 1 loss at the Big Ten Tournament, the big man went off Tuesday.

Teammates Max Klesmit (16 points) and Connor Essegian (14 points) also joined Crowl in double-digits and the three of them alone outscored Bradley 66-62 in the game.

For the Braves, Rienk Mast did his best to keep them in the game, scoring a team-high 14 points while snagging a game-high 12 rebounds, but his efforts weren’t enough.

Greg Gard and the Badgers will now move on the to second round of the NIT on Sunday, taking on three-seed Liberty at the Kohl Center (time TBD).
