Are Tar Heels the favorite for four-star edge rusher?

Is the UNC football program leading the way for this four-star in-state edge rusher in the 2023 class?

Since Mack Brown arrived at UNC a few years back, the football program has been able to land some of the top talent in the state of North Carolina.

And they hope that’s the case again here for the 2023 class.

Four-star edge rusher [autotag]Rico Walker[/autotag] is a name the Tar Heels have high on their recruiting board, establishing him as a priority recruit. The 6-foot-3, 233-pound Hickory native is a top 200 recruit overall and the No. 2 player in the state of North Carolina per the 247Sports rankings. But with 24 offers in his recruitment including from UNC, Clemson, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Penn State among others, who is the favorite?

The answer just might be UNC.

The Tar Heels hold the lone crystal ball predictor on 247Sports, landing it from Clemson insider Anna Hickey. The crystal ball predictor doesn’t guarantee a commitment but it’s a way to measure where a recruit stands and is potentially leaning.

It’s good news for UNC but they do need to close the deal and get Walker committed.

Auburn makes top 11 for 4-star edge Rico Walker

This is a position of need for Auburn.

Auburn has to land multiple edge players in the 2023 recruiting cycle and they are in a good place for one of the best in the country.

[autotag]Rico Walker[/autotag], a four-star prospect from North Carolina, announced his top 11 schools on Sunday and the Tigers made the list. They will be battling Georgia, Cinncinatti, Michigan State, Louisville, Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida, Miami, Clemson, and Maryland for the Hickory, North Carolina product.

Walker is ranked as the No. 160 overall player and No. 13 edge defender in the 247Sports composite ranking. The 6-foot-2, 233-pound defender is ranked as the No. 2 player in North Carolina.

Auburn extended an offer to him back on March 31 but will have to make up some ground on North Carolina to land him. The Tar Heels are the recipient of the lone Crystal Ball to land him. One thing going for Auburn is that his father, Ricardo Walker, played defensive tackle at Auburn.

Auburn extends offer to one of top players from North Carolina

Auburn extended an offer to 4-star edge defender Rico Walker.

Auburn football has entered the sweepstakes for one of the top players from North Carolina. The Tigers recently extended an offer to edge defender Rico Walker.

Walker, who plays on both sides of the ball, has more upside on the defensive side of the ball and projects to be an edge defender. Auburn has steadily produced NFL defensive linemen and is looking for the next crop of promising defenders.

He has the potential to add weight to his frame and become a more physical player but has great athleticism.

He has a great burst of speed at the snap and is able to get into the backfield but also does a good job setting the edge. When he does get to the offensive player he has great closing speed and is a sure tackler. Walker also has the athleticism to drop into passing lanes.

Like most high school defensive linemen, he needs to increase his upper body strength and his technique.

An SEC legacy recruit and a top Clemson target in the class of 2023 will return to campus this weekend for his second visit to Tiger Town this year.

Hickory (N.C.) High School four-star defensive end Rico Walker announced via social media that he will be back at Clemson this weekend. He was previously on campus for the Tigers’ elite junior day Jan. 29 and also visited Clemson last October for the Florida State game.

Walker (6-4, 230) is the son of Ricardo Walker, a native of Darlington, S.C., who was a defensive tackle at Auburn in the 1990s.

The younger Walker is ranked as high as the No. 14 defensive end and No. 120 overall prospect in the 2023 class by ESPN.

Clemson extended an offer to him in early January.

“I was so happy. I was so excited,” Walker told The Clemson Insider after scoring the offer. “It was one of the offers that I was definitely wanting to have, for sure.”

Walker’s offer list also includes schools such as Florida, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, NC State, North Carolina, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Clemson is set to host a plethora of top talent on Saturday, when the Tigers will hold their elite junior day and welcome some of the nation’s top prospects in the 2023 class to campus.

One of the headlining junior day visitors will be Birmingham (Ala.) Briarwood Christian four-star signal caller Christopher Vizzina (pictured above), the No. 8 quarterback and No. 85 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Vizzina camped at Clemson last summer and returned to campus for the Wake Forest game on Nov. 20, when he picked up an offer from the Tigers. He will be the lone quarterback on campus for Clemson’s elite junior day.

“I’m super excited,” he told The Clemson Insider. “It’s their elite junior day, so everybody up there is one of the top players in the country, so that should be really awesome.”

Among the other headliners expected to be on hand for Clemson’s elite junior day are a pair of five-star defensive tackles in Thompson High School (Alabaster, Ala.)’s Peter Woods and Warner Robins (Ga.) High School’s Vic Burley.

Woods, ranked as the No. 4 defensive lineman in the 2023 class per the 247Sports Composite, released a top six in December that included Clemson along with Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Oregon. The Tigers extended an offer to Woods back on June 1 of last year – the first day they began offering prospects in the 2023 class. He visited Clemson during the Dabo Swinney Camp last June and returned to campus for the Boston College and Florida State games in October.

Burley, ranked as the No. 6 defensive lineman in the 2023 class according to the 247Sports Composite, likewise received an offer from Clemson on June 1. He was on campus last June as well and returned to Tiger Town for the UConn game in November.

Several other big-time defensive linemen are also slated to be in attendance for Saturday’s elite junior day, including Highland Home (Ala.) four-star Keldric Faulk, Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola four-star Derrick LeBlanc, Columbus (Ga.) Carver four-star Darron Reed, New Bern (N.C.) four-star Keith Sampson and Hickory (N.C.) four-star Rico Walker.

Faulk, Reed, Sampson and Walker all earned offers from Clemson earlier this month. Sampson dropped a top five on Jan. 15 featuring Clemson, Georgia, NC State, Ohio State and South Carolina, while LeBlanc, who received an offer from Clemson last September, named the Tigers one of his final seven schools in December along with Florida, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State and UCF.

A longstanding Clemson cornerback target in the 2023 class who will make his way back to campus Saturday is Atlanta (Ga.) Westlake four-star Avieon Terrell – of course, the younger brother of former Clemson and current Atlanta Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell.

Clemson offered the younger Terrell back in April 2020, and he’s made countless trips to The Valley ever since. He is ranked as the No. 15 cornerback and No. 103 overall prospect nationally in the 2023 class, per Rivals.

Terrell will be joined at Clemson’s elite junior day by a couple of other standout defensive backs: Coppell (Texas) four-star cornerback Braxton Myers and Selma (Ala.) four-star safety DaKaari Nelson.

Myers received an offer from Clemson on Wednesday of last week, and head coach Dabo Swinney paid a visit to his school earlier this week. Nelson doesn’t currently hold an offer from the Tigers, though they’re showing substantial interest and co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Mickey Conn stopped by his school on Thursday.

“Lately they’ve been saying they like the way I play and they want to offer me, but Coach Swinney wants to see me in person before they do,” Nelson told The Clemson Insider in a phone interview Thursday.

Other prominent prospects planning to attend Clemson’s elite junior day include Roswell (Ga.) Blessed Trinity Catholic four-star running back Justice Haynes, Pfafftown (N.C.) Reagan four-star offensive lineman Sam Pendleton, Lakeland (Fla.) four-star wide receiver Tyler Williams and Jacksonville (Fla.) Andrew Jackson four-star linebacker Grayson Howard.

As always, visitor lists like this one are fluid and subject to change. But here is the full list of prospects that The Clemson Insider has confirmed as expected visitors for Saturday’s elite junior day:

Warner Robins (Ga.) 2023 5-star DL Vic Burley

Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson 2023 5-star DL Peter Woods

Clemson offer was one North Carolina edge rusher ‘really wanted to have’

Lemanski Hall and Wes Goodwin phoned a four-star pass-rusher, who the Tigers had previously been keeping tabs on.

They had good news for Hickory (N.C.) High School 2023 edge Rico Walker, who announced a scholarship offer from the Tigers on social media Tuesday.

Walker’s father, Ricardo, is a native of Darlington, S.C., and was a defensive tackle at Auburn in the 1990s.

“I was so happy. I was so excited,” Walker told The Clemson Insider in a phone interview Tuesday. “It was one of the offers that I was definitely wanting to have, for sure.”

Goodwin, Clemson’s defensive coordinator and linebacker’s coach, texted Walker on Monday — the day before the Tigers offered him — they were just choppin it up, getting to know one another.

Little did Walker know that he’d have an offer in hand the following day.

“He’s pretty chill,” Walker said of Goodwin. “He’s pretty cool. I can’t wait to meet him in person.”

Walker could have the opportunity to meet Goodwin in person for Clemson’s Elite Junior Day on Jan. 29. The Tigers invited him to come and he’s going to do his best to make an appearance, but is unsure of what his schedule may look like due to other visits in the month of January.

The last time Walker was in Clemson, he was in attendance as an unofficial for the team’s 30-20 win over Florida State on Oct. 30. Walker was able to spend time with Hall and Clemson’s staff when he was on campus for the FSU game.

Hall visited Hickory High multiple times in the month of December and spent some time with Walker’s head coach.

“We’re pretty cool,” Walker said of his relationship with Hall. “He’s a real cool dude. He’s real chill, man. He checks up on me a lot.”

Where does Clemson currently stand in his recruitment?

“Everybody right now standing good with me,” he said. “I am planning on dropping my top schools soon, but they are pretty good though.”

Walker, who lists close to 20 scholarship offers, plays defensive end/outside linebacker on defense in addition to seeing action at tight end and wide receiver on the offensive side of the ball. In 11 games as a junior this season, the 6-foot-4, 230-pounder posted 56 total tackles (seven for loss) and seven sacks to go with 12 catches for 131 yards and three receiving touchdowns, according to MaxPreps.

Walker is ranked as high as the No. 123 overall prospect in the country for the 2023 class by ESPN. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, he is the No. 14 edge defender and No. 161 overall prospect in his class.

Where do the Tigers stand with Walker at this stage of his recruiting process?

“They’re sitting pretty good,” he told The Clemson Insider in early December.

Asked what has stood out most to him about Clemson so far, Walker said, “The family-type atmosphere.”

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with an SEC legacy recruit that Clemson played host to earlier this season.

Hickory (N.C.) High School four-star edge rusher Rico Walker, a highly regarded prospect in the class of 2023, was at Death Valley as an unofficial visitor for the Tigers’ 30-20 victory over Florida State on Oct. 30.

“I enjoyed the game a lot,” Walker told The Clemson Insider. “It got more and more intense as it went on. That was fun to watch.”

Walker’s father, Ricardo, is a native of Darlington, S.C., and was a defensive tackle at Auburn in the 1990s.

While Rico doesn’t currently hold an offer from Clemson, the Tigers are showing interest, and defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall visited Hickory High earlier this week to check on him.

Walker was able to spend time with Hall and Clemson’s staff when he was on campus for the FSU game.

“They tell me I’m a great player and they are excited to build a relationship,” he said.

Walker told TCI he plans to return to Clemson for another visit at some point and added that he “was definitely amazed by the facilities” while checking them out.

Walker’s offer list features schools such as Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, NC State and North Carolina.
