Rick Barnes recaps Tennessee’s win versus Montana

Tennessee basketball defeats Montana for third win of the 2024-25 season.

No. 9 Tennessee (3-0) defeated Montana (2-2), 92-57, on Wednesday at Food City Center. Rankings reflect the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

The Vols totaled 38 rebounds to Montana’s 17. Tennessee forward Igor Milicic Jr. led all players with 10 rebounds in the contest.

Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes met with media and discussed the Vols’ rebounding on Wednesday.

“It’s a big part of what we talk about in our program,” Barnes said. “I think, defensively, we got 45 percent of our misses, which is terrific, obviously, but it’s a major emphasis in our program, obviously, and people know that about us. It’s a compliment to the players because it’s not an easy part of the game. It’s something that takes determination to fight to do it, and knowing that the other team is trying to keep us to get to the glass. Concentration has a lot to do with it, and we believe it comes down to those one-on-one battles, but it’s important. You can’t be a great defensive team if you can’t finish it with a rebound. You don’t want to be a one-and-done offensive team if you can help.”

Rick Barnes recaps Vols’ season opening win versus Gardner-Webb

Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes recaps the Vols’ season opening win versus Gardner-Webb.

No. 12 Tennessee (1-0) defeated Gardner-Webb (0-1), 80-64, on Monday at Food City Center to open its 2024-25 basketball season. Rankings reflect the preseason USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes recapped the Vols’ win after the game.

“First, it was a really good opener for us,” Barnes said. “It’s an extremely, extremely well coached team, and we knew that coming in. They were going to do what we thought, and they do it well.

“They adjusted at the end where they were just driving, putting their bodies on us, taking us down low. Defensively, I thought we were okay for the most part, other than what we gave them, turnovers and second-chance points. I say gave them, they went and took it and made good with it, but the fact that they showed different defenses was great for us. I thought for the most part, our guys handled that okay, other than the last five minutes. I mean, the last five minutes, I didn’t think we were very good, with too many guys that weren’t aware of the clock and the situation. I don’t care what the score is, we’re playing the game the right way. We didn’t do that very well in the last five minutes, the way we needed to.”

Tennessee announced three promotions within the men’s basketball program on Wednesday.

Lucas Campbell and Bryan Lentz were promoted to assistant coaches, while Riley Collins was named assistant director of player development.

Campbell played for the Vols from 2015-19.

“Over nearly a decade, I have seen Lucas grow from an eager walk-on freshman my first season here at Tennessee into now a rising star in the coaching profession,” Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes said. “This school and this basketball program mean so much to Lucas. He has been a key part of our staff over the past two years and has played a major role in our strong recruiting efforts, which he will continue to do while taking on additional responsibilities he is assuredly ready for.”

Lentz is entering his seventh season at Tennessee after serving as director of player development for six years.

“Bryan has a strong basketball mind and possesses nearly a quarter-century of coaching experience,” Barnes said. “His passion for assisting the young men in our program become the absolute best they can be, both on and off the court, is unrivaled.  We have shared a great deal of success together, both during his first six seasons at Tennessee and previously at Texas, and I know he will help our program continue its upward trajectory in his new role.”

Collins enters his third season at Tennessee after serving as a graduate assistant from 2022-24.

“From the first day he arrived at Tennessee, Riley has made his presence felt within our facility,” Barnes said. “He is a tireless worker who gives this program everything he can each day. After seeing all the ways Riley aided our program the past two years, it was clear he deserved a full-time position and I am thrilled he accepted that opportunity.”
