Rookie Chandler Smith earned his first career NASCAR Xfinity Series victory Saturday afternoon at Richmond (Va.) Raceway holding off John Hunter Nemechek on a final race restart with six laps remaining to hoist the ToyotaCare 250 trophy.

Smith’s No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet led a race best 83 of the 250 laps – the bulk of that early in the race. But the 20-year year old Georgia native was able to run among the top five for most of the day and ultimately drive his Chevy around Nemechek’s No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on that last restart, pulling away to a 0.298s victory after some intense side-by-side action for the lead in the closing laps.

Smith has had three top-five finishes, including a gut-wrenching near miss at Las Vegas last month. After leading a dominant 118 laps and being out front with one lap to go at Vegas four races ago, he had to settle for third place. So this victory at Richmond was especially motivating for the young driver.

“Feels great,’’ a smiling Smith said. “This goes to testimony as to Vegas, dominated that race but didn’t win and said, it was all in God’s timing. …We are in Richmond, my favorite race track, and we’re sitting in victory lane.’’

It marks the third-consecutive runner-up finish for Nemechek at the 0.75-mile Richmond track, including a NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race and the last two NASCAR Xfinity Series races there.

“We weren’t very good on the short run, we had a long-run speed car,’’ Nemechek said, “But we came from the back up there to battle for the win, put ourselves in position.

“Disappointed to run runner-up again, that’s the last three races I’ve run here — finished second. Frustrated, but we’ll go back to work. The No. 16 (Smith) just had the best car on the short run.”

JR Motorsports driver Josh Berry finished third in the No. 8 JRM Chevrolet. He led 63 laps and was out front with 65 laps remaining until a series of caution flags and restarts that characterized the race ending.

Kaz Grala turned in a strong day with a fourth place showing in the No. 26 Sam Hunt Racing Toyota — equaling his career best effort in the Xfinity Series. Cole Custer rallied to a fifth place finish in the No. 00 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford after a problem on pit road and some tight side-by-side racing late in the day.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1428]

Justin Allgaier — who started his No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet from pole position after qualifying was rained out Saturday morning – led laps early but had an up-and-down day. Ultimately, he finished 13th and was good enough to take the first $100,000 bonus in the Dash 4 Cash sweepstakes sponsored by Xfinity.

With his work, Allgaier now joins Saturday’s three new qualifiers – Chandler Smith, Berry and Nemechek to contend for the next $100,000 check at the series’ next race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on April 15.

“Weird day today, we didn’t fire off quite as good as we hoped for but they kept working; great pit stops all day.’’ Allgaier said, adding, “It’s weird finishing 13th and still be standing here holding this check but the other guys had a rough day. This puts us in next week for the Dash 4 Cash so huge thanks to Xfinity for all they do for the sport.’’

Seven different drivers led at least 24 laps – and for much of the race there were at least three drivers ranked among the top 10 looking for their first career Xfinity Series win.

Sheldon Creed, Ryan Sieg, Parker Kligerman, the season’s three-race winner Austin Hill and Derek Kraus rounded out the top 10. It was the first series start for Kraus, who raced among the top 10 in his No. 10 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet for most of the day.

Riley Herbst, who led 27 laps and Brandon Jones, who led 24, were involved in an accident while contending for fourth place late in the race. Herbst finished 23rd while Jones was 21st.

The next race is the Call811.com Before You Dig. 250 at Martinsville Speedway on April 15 (7:30 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Virginia vs Richmond Game Preview

Why Richmond Will Win

Can the Spiders hold up against the Virginia passing attack?

The secondary wasn’t bad last season, but the run defense should be the strength early on for a team coming off a strong year all-around defensively.

To stay alive, it’ll be about the turnovers. Richmond doesn’t have the offensive pop to keep up if Virginia gets rolling early, but the pass rush will be decent and there will be enough stops to keep this from getting ugly. As long as the Spider offense doesn’t turn the ball over – a big problem last year – this will be entertaining.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Will Win

Richmond doesn’t have the pop.

The downfield passing game won’t be able to do much deep, the ground game doesn’t have the ability to generate much of a push, and this really will be all about whether or not the Virginia offense can find a groove early and make the Spiders press.

Virginia might not bomb away like it did last year, but if it can get the running game going like new head coach Tony Elliott wants, it’ll keep the time of possession battle close.

The Cavaliers can’t let Richmond control the game.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Richmond will bring just enough defense to make Virginia try, but the Elliott era will get off to a good start with the offense coming up with a few early scoring drives to be able to cruise from there.

It won’t be totally smooth – the final score will be worse than the game – but it’ll be the tune-up needed for the new regime.

Kings hosted Hyunjung Lee and others for pre-draft workout

Lee was among the draft-eligible prospects that worked out with the Kings on Tuesday.

Davidson forward Hyunjung Lee was among the prospects that worked out with the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday, according to Jason Anderson of the Sacramento Bee.

Lee, who was born in South Korea, was named to the All-Atlantic-10 first team after averaging 15.8 points, six rebounds and 1.9 assists on 38.1% shooting from 3-point range in 34 games. He finished eighth in the conference in scoring and fourth in 3s (80).

The 6-foot-7 standout was also invited to compete in front of scouts, coaches and front-office executives at the NBA G League Elite Camp May 16-17 from Chicago, Illinois.

Lee is looking to become just the second-ever Korean NBA player.

In addition to Lee, the Kings also brought in Alabama guard Jaden Shackelford, UCLA guard Johnny Juzang, Richmond forward Tyler Burton, Kentucky forward Keion Brooks and Virginia Tech forward Justyn Mutts on Tuesday.

The Kings enter the pre-draft process with picks No. 7, 37 and 49, respectively. Their workout on Tuesday was their first this year as they appear to be ramping up their draft preparations ahead of the combine next week.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.

College basketball fans blasted the refs in Iowa’s upset loss to Richmond

So bad.

The Iowa Hawkeyes went into the men’s NCAA tournament as a popular sleeper pick to make the Final Four out of the Midwest region. The No. 5 seeds came into the NCAA tournament fresh off a Big Ten tournament title and seemed to be getting hot at the right time. What could go wrong?

The Richmond Spiders had other ideas, though, but college basketball fans couldn’t get over the officiating down the stretch.

Richmond knocked off Iowa, 67-63, in Thursday’s opening round — an undeniably huge win for Chris Mooney’s squad. But Hawkeyes fans will be complaining about the blatant missed call on Kris Murray’s would-be tying three for quite some time.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Notre Dame Fighting Thanos?!?!

Check out some concept work of Marvel themed college helmets done by 247Sports.

When I saw the headline Marvel themed college football helmets, I wondered what was in store as 247Sports prepared to change some of the most iconic looks to Marvel comic book themed mascots.

Some of them were very obvious, Michigan didn’t have to change much as they were already the Wolverines, Iowa the same with Hawkeye (just added an s), and Air Force staying with the Falcons. Other teams saw additions to their names like Richmond adding men to Spiders, Pitt added Black to their Panthers (RIP Chadwick Boseman), Toledo added Racoons’ to become the Rocket Racoons, Duke transformed into the Daredevils and Oregon became Howard the Ducks’.

There were some more fantastic reworked names such as the Arizona Hellcats, Marshall Thundering Thors, Army Moonknights, Virginia Tech Loki’s and others.

What they had in store for Notre Dame was quite different, as an avid Marvel reader and viewer, I knew this one was going to be a bit more difficult than others. The closest Notre Dame figure in a Marvel comic was actually when the reworked opening game covers for ESPN in 2016. They ended up with the Fighting Thanos’, if you have been under a rock for the last ten years then you need no introduction to the big, baddie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you are unfamiliar, Thanos is the epitome of evil, using the Infinity Gauntlet to house the Infinity Stones and posses massive power.

It’s hard to argue with what 247Sports chose for Notre Dame, it was going to be tough anyways. By adding the Infinity Gauntlet to the iconic gold helmet was a nice addition, but even cooler was the middle of the gauntlet was a clover. The kid in me loved it, moving away from tradition and having fun with Marvel. Which one did you like the best?
